When they were kids in school football had been his life just as study and learning had been hers, but somewhere in between they became each others lives too. Hearing Tai downplay football was a shock to Ray, she knew it wasn’t all true though when he couldn’t look her in the eye or even the face for long. When they’d broken up Ray had been glad that Tai had football to concentrate on, glad he had something else in his life. She’d had Claire and all that came with that, but now looking at Tai she saw all the things she’d missed. She loved their daughter, but she still had unresolved feelings for Tai too as she was slowly finding out.
“You didn’t mean the truth about me been your ex? Or you didn’t mean the little pity party your just threw yourself?” She asked without a hint of humor to her voice or face. She used the same honest talk with Claire as much was possible with a child her age. “You could get out and walk the rez, just a little walking is going to loosen it up.” She suggested. “But first you’ve got to sort your head out and stop been so down on yourself. We may be each other’s ex, but we friends still right?” She asked hopefully. Saying the words she knew it was crazy, she should be running for the hills and getting as far away from him as possible. Been close to him put the secret at risk, and any friendship they had couldn’t survive that right?
When Tai looked away from her she wonder which Tai was going to turn back to her; the confident footballer, or the pouting (much like Claire) guy whose life she’d just walked back into.
Joking with him made the visit seem easier, seem normal. When he smiled she smiled back seeing the boy she’d loved and the smile of their daughter. “Tai, I want you to call me.” She said seriously, but again a voice scream she shouldn’t be agreeing or even wanting to see him more. Instead of pushing it she resolved to leave it up to him.
“No Emily moved out, she lives over on La Push. Remember Uley, he was older then us. Big guy?” She questioned wondering if Tai remember any of the people from their rez let alone the neighboring one. “Shes over there with him. Engaged. So yea I have the big room now.” It was true she had it now, though she’d had the room since before Claire was born it been easier to have the crib in the larger room then crammed in hers. Though now Claire had her old, unchanged, room.
With her hands back in his she knew there was no backing out or not seeing him again. There was something there, no matter how much Ray was trying to deny it, she could feel all her old feelings. Complicated wasn’t the word for what she could be stepping back into.
Been friends meant time together and more visits, neither point put Rayen off or made her want to retract her offer of friendship and the voice in her head seemed quieter. She squeezed Tai’s hands in return and smiled even as he dropped his head from her. He seemed ashamed and she hated to see that in him, “I have more patience now then ever.” she smiled speaking the truth. Motherhood certainly taught her patience. “I’ll be there ever step, just like in calc. Like old times, eh?” she smiled again.
