{.... one year post Breaking Dawn....tag Laurie and Matt}
Pulling her hair our from her jacket as she shrugged it on in the small confines of the car, she let it drop cascading down her back. Lyndal looked up at the small house and took a deep steadying breath reminding herself it was her brother not a monster. In truth it wasn’t Laurie she was afraid of seeing, it was his new girlfriend Matt. Lyndal had never met Amy, she’d only seen pictures and a couple of brief phone chats. This was different, this was dinner with them both.
“Thanks Runana.” Lyndal smiled at Nash’s aunt whom she’d ridden with not explaining who Laurie was to her. “I’ll get a ride home with Laurie.” she smiled slipping out of the car in to the cold evening air, the days rain had left the ground water logged and Lyndal had to pick her way towards the door.
Nash would be home with Travis and Lyndal could already feel her heart ache missing him. She hadn’t to said where she was going or to who, just a friend’s she’d said. Truth was she hadn’t been sure what to tell Nash. Laurie hadn’t taken the boyfriend news to well when she’d visited the clinic for birth control. She knew her brother was traditional life their parents and he was, after all, her big brother. Been invited to dinner she thought it best not to have to many big events in one night.
Reaching the door Lyndal knocked and stood back waiting, she glanced over her shoulder and saw Ruana waiting and watching for her to get inside. She knew Nash’s aunt wasn’t her biggest fan, she could see the way the woman looked at her and Nash if they got too close. Waiting for the door to be answered Lyndal hoped Laurie’s girlfriend would answer.

Matt took a deep breath as she placed the cutlery down at the table, doing her best to make everything look perfect – as she had been all day. Whilst Laurie had been at work she had gone to gather some fresh flowers to liven the place up, worried that his sister would think that she wasn’t looking after him properly. She was way overcompensating for the outburst of jealousy that she had encountered upon seeing the pair of them in the diner.
She chewed down on her lip, frowning at a slight smudge she had spied on one of the pieces of glassware. Once that was fixed she stood back from the table and studied it, wondering if she had done too much now. Did it look too much? She glanced at the clock and took another deep breath. Okay, so she wasn’t usually the best at meeting new people, but she didn’t normally give herself a panic attack about it. She really hoped that she didn’t know about that day… It all made making a good impression so much more important. She wouldn’t be able to bear it if Lyndal didn’t like her and somehow managed to persuade her boyfriend that she wasn’t worth it. Maybe with her behaviour that day he would agree?
“Laurie,” she called, turning to look in the general direction of her boyfriend, who was in another part of the house. She smoothed her hands down her dark skirt and then flicked the ends of her hair behind her shoulders. “Laurie, that’s the door – I think your sister’s here.”

Laurie was nervous about how tonight would go. Two of the most important women in his life were meeting. His sister and his girlfriend, the woman he had recently bought a ring for and wanted to make his wife. These two women had to get along, in his mind. He didnt know what he would do if they didnt. He had shown Lyndal the ring a few days before when they had met up, the same day he and Matt had a fight about who he had been with. He wanted to give a little more space from their fight before asking her, wanting to create the perfect and most romantic mood that he could. But if the two of them didnt get along, he didn't know what he would do. They both had to be in his life. He had to make sure tonight worked out well.
Matt had come over early that day to help him set up, something that Laurie had appreciated. He could see in her behavior that she was nervous about tonight too. He came out of the other room as he heard Matt telling him his sister was here. "Okay, I'll get it" He said walking towards the door but stopping and turning to her before he opened it. "She's going to love you" He said with an encouraging smile.
Opening up the door Laurie saw his sister standing their, and the car (that he assumed was from her host family) was outside waiting for her to get in. "Hey! Hope you're hungry" He said giving her a big brotherly hug before stepping aside so she could get in from the cold. He gave a slight wave to the woman in the car before closing the door behind them.
He took a deep and nervous breath as he looked between the two women. "Lyndal, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Matt Stone, Matt, this is my sister Lyndal" He said giving out introductions.

Matt smiled brightly, but nervously, back at her boyfriend as he made his way to the door, hoping beyond all else that he was right that his sister would like her. She had no idea what she would do to if the other girl disapproved of her. She busied her head by thinking over a song that she had heard on the radio a few hours ago, before she started pondering over how likely it was for the other girl to turn her beloved boyfriend against her.
“I hope so,” she said, nerves coming out in her voice as she straightened the cutlery for the thousandth time before stepping away from the table to remove the temptation. She rushed a couple of steps to catch up with Laurie, thinking it might be nice to meet his sister at the door, or at least closer to it than the dining room. She smiled, her cheeks slightly pinker than usual, as she watched the blonde woman that she could already recognise step through the door and hug her brother. So opposite to the feelings that this closeness had evoked in her last time she had seen them together, Matt was warmed by the affection between the two, happy that despite the amount of time and distance that had been between them, they could still be as close as she was with her own brother in some respects.
Her dark eyes bounced between her boyfriend and his sister as he introduced them to each other. Again, a surge of guilt ran through her which she tried her hardest to banish, all because of that stupid suspicious moment she had. She wondered if the girl would be wearing that ring that he gave her when they had met in the diner. She stepped forward, a large, welcoming smile on her face, “Hi Lyndal, it’s great to meet you at last. He talks about you a lot,” she kept her eyes on the other girl, looking for a sign of whether they should shake hands or hug – that awkward, awkward first meeting stage.

Resting back on her heels for a moment as she waited for the door to be answered Lyndal jumped a little when it was actually opened. Her brother was such a comforting sight, though to a somewhat less degree them Nash, “Laurie.” Lyndal smiled brightly as she stepped across the thresh hold into the nice warm house. Stepping in to Laurie’s arms Dal returned the hug just as eagerly reveling in the feeling of home and family he gave her. Looking back over her shoulder Lyndal waved and smiled at Ru. “I’m starved, you know they don’t feed me.” she laughed as the door closed behind her and she heard the car drive away.
Behind Laurie Lyndal could see the woman he was in the process of introducing her to. She was beautiful and so dark, the opposite to herself and Laurie who were blessed (or was it cursed) with the fair hair and tanning skin on their native country. Lyndal smiled brightly as the girl spoke, he accent was the same as that of Nashal’s and the other natives around the rez it was an accent Dal was starting to really like. “Its bonzer to meet you Matt.” Dal said quickly stepping passed her brother and towards Matt embracing her quickly.
Stepping back from Matt Lyndal smiled, “Whatever he tells you about me I didn’t do it, it was his fault or he’s exaggerating, but I could tell you some things about him.” Dal laughed letting her accent flow over her words and already feeling it grow stronger in Laurie’s welcomed company. “Can I do anything?” She offered with a smile back at her brother.

Laurie could hear the nervousness in his girlfriend's voice as she spoke of hoping that Lyndal did like her. He wanted to go over and give her a big reassuring hug right there, but knew it would have to wait now that his sister was at the door.
Hearing her speak in his native accent, one that had faded more on him than on her, having been in America longer than she had, was a comfort to his nerves. It felt like home, even if he hadnt been there in years. He laughed as she said how they didnt feed her. "I can tell you're all skin and bones, you should come more often, you know I've always got snacks stocked, even when I'm out of the basics" He said knowing it was true that doctors didnt always have the time to have the most healthy of diets.
He smiled as he watched the two most important women in his life introducing themselves and embracing. He hoped it was off to a good start with them both. He quickly moved forward as Lyndal started offering to tell Matt some things about him. "I don't think we have to get into those childhood stories right now, maybe we should save that for when Leo's here so at least we're even in getting embarrassed by our siblings" He joked lightly with them then shaking his head as she offered to help. "Nope, we're all set, dinner's almost finished...can I start you both off with something to drink? " He offered, knowing his first instinct had been wine for the evening but needing to remember both his guests were under 21, the legal age here.

Speaking wit her brother and seeing him gave Lyndal a happy glow, she’d missed him since they’d parted in Australia. His accent was softer, not the bawdy twang of the boy who she’d grown up with, it pained her a little to see the changes in him and hear them. She laughed as he commented on her stature having always been skin and bone, “I’ll have you know I’ve done some filling out.” She smiled knowing she’d been a scrawny kid when he’d left her back in oz. Coming over to raid his cupboards sounded good, but living in a house with a young child the snacks were aplenty at Nash’s place too. “You should stock up on fruit and veggies, get your 5 a day Mr Doctor.” She teased.
Matt seemed nice, she certainly made Laurie smile which Lyndal was happy about, having failed to meet his last girlfriend Lyndal drew no comparisons. Growing up and been so close to one another Lyndal had a whole archive of stories she could share with Matt about little Laurie. “You have a brother too?” she asked picking up that her own brother had just mentioned siblings. “Aren’t they the worst?” she laughed poking her tongue out at Laurie happy to easily fall back into the familiar nook of been the little sister.
“I’ll take OJ, please.” She said politely with a smile before turning to Matt. “So how did you meet Laurie? You can fill me in on all the girlie details while Laurie’s busy.” she said brightly wanting to hear all about their meeting and get to know the woman her brother seemed to love.

As Lyndal made the decision to hug her rather than shake hands or any other greeting that was available to her, Matt couldn’t help but feel thankful, though she hadn’t heard the word ‘bonzer’ used before outside of bad sitcoms on television. She had no idea that Australians actually spoke like that, and she had no idea how to respond with the same level of enthusiasm without sounding like she was mocking her. She grinned when the two pulled away from each other, “It’s great to meet you too. Don’t worry, everything he’s told me about you is all good, but I’ll take any stories you have about him anyway…”
She turned to her side, smiling at Laurie cheekily, before laughing along with Lyndal, though her expression fell for a moment as her boyfriend suggested that they left the childhood stories until Leo was there to put in his two cents. She knew that, unfortunately, that wouldn’t be any time soon with his attitude to her dating an older man, though he had mellowed out more now that they had been together for so long. She smiled after another moment. “He wouldn’t dare. I have way more on him than he has on me and he knows it! Yeah, Leo’s my twin brother and he can be a major pain …” she trailed off, but being her, she couldn’t let the sentence lie negatively. “But mostly, I have to admit, I like it.”
Matt smiled as Lyndal offered to help. Even though she knew that there was nothing remaining for Laurie’s sister to help with, she still appreciated the offer. Slowly her nerves began to calm themselves as she interacted with the Australian girl, getting the impression that she was a genuinely nice person – how could she not be being related to Laurie? She turned her head towards Laurie as he asked if she wanted a drink. “Lemonade, please,” she said with a smile.
As Lyndal turned her attention to her alone, her brother being busy with the drinks, and asked about how they met a slight colour rose in Matt’s cheeks. As strong as their relationship now was, they hardly met in the most romantic of circumstances. She could barely see straight when they first met, and yet even then she had felt an odd attraction to him. Still, not a story to tell over dinner, plus she didn’t want to give the impression that Laurie was dating her after seeing her in the clinic, knowing that it was in no way good for a doctor to go out with his patient.
“Oh, it was nothing out of the ordinary, really,” she began to doctor as swiftly as she could. “We both happened to be in the diner at La Push. It was the lunch rush, so the three tables were pretty full, leaving room at mine, so he came over. It was fate really,” she laughed, hoping that Laurie wouldn’t think bad of her for embroidering the truth somewhat and that Lyndal would not know her well enough to see that she was not telling the entire truth. “And it all went from there… How about you? You’re on an exchange right? How’re you finding it?”

Hugging was natural to Lyndal, she thought nothing of hugging Matt. She looked over at Laurie as Matt mentioned him only saying good things, “Then he’s lying or trying to sweeten me up for something. I was a terrible little sister….sometimes.” She said smiling at Laurie and thinking of their amazing childhood, Dal really was glad she was so close to her brother. “There was this one summer I followed him everywhere, I wanted to do everything my big brother did.” She said laughing as she remembered been his shadow.
“Wow, Twins.” Lyndal said in surprise, it wasn’t often she’d met twins. “Yea its probably only fair we share secrets when we can get both sides of your childhood too.” She smiled and laughed knowing she’d happily tell Laurie’s secrets if Matt asked. Lyndal already knew she liked Matt, the way she made Laurie smile and the way she caught him looking at her were all positives in Dal’s book.
As Laurie disappeared off to the kitchen Dal took the opportunity to talk with Matt nodding as she explained, vaguely she noted, how the two of them had met. “Oh yeah I’m here on an exchange, seeing a bit of the world before I finish school. I love it here, the Rez is so great.” She said stressing the so and letting her compliment be filled by her accent. It was more then the rez she liked, it was Nash, he filled her every moments waking and otherwise. And it was been close to her brother again. “I love that’s its so close to Laurie, I’ve missed him, but don’t tell him that.” She said with a laugh. “Are you from La Push?” she asked almost certain there was another Reservation a few hours away.
