(about 10 years Post Breaking Dawn - Aubrey age 18)
Aubrey had been training for months. She had been working hard, on little sleep and sore muscles, trying to perfect her craft. With the audition a week away she knew she had to get every step right and have perfect form. She had booked her old dance studio that night after her teacher was done with classes, but now she was sitting in the back of an ambulance sobbing in pain and worry as she headed to the hospital.
There was a searing pain that went through her knee. She had landed on it wrong and it had given out beneath her in the studio. She saw the looks the paramedics were giving her, though they were trying to be sympathetic, she knew that they thought she was overreacting to the pain. But it wasn't just the pain, it was knowing what this could mean. She'd work through a sprain or a pulled muscle. It would kill during and after the audition but she'd make it work. But if it was more serious...she couldnt face that yet. She had to pray that she'd recover fully.
Once inside the hospital and given her own room while she waited for the doctor she had a chance to get to her cell phone again. There was only one person she wanted here with her to comfort her. One person who would fully put up with her tears and hysteria and she could lean on. She called Kris' number as she took a few deep breaths trying to keep from sounding too bad on the phone. Once she heard him answer she wiped away a tear as if trying to compose herself even when he couldnt see her. "Kris...I'm in the hospital...I landed bad..." She said biting her lip to keep from crying.

Kris stretched out full-length on his bed, a half-amused, half-self-pitying smile playing on his lips. For these last few weeks he had well and truly become a dance-widower, but he didn’t mind, it was what his wonderful girlfriend loved to do and he loved her. Plus, she had to go through the same thing when he had a big recital on the cards. His last, actually, hadn’t been too long ago, but it was just the same old thing. He was good at the instrument, but it was fun for him, he didn’t want to make a career of it – to Aubrey, he knew that dancing was her world. And she was good at it, better than good.
He picked up his phone as it began to sound the prelude to Bach’s Cello Suite No 1, a favourite piece of his and the customised ring tone for Aubrey. He quickly flicked his wrist and noticed the time – way earlier than he would have thought so close to her big audition. His brow immediately fell into a confused frown as he opened the line. And when he heard the strained sound of his girlfriend’s voice and what she said on the other end, the frown intensified ten-fold. An injury would be the stuff of nightmares for her just then, with the audition so close and if she was in hospital then it wasn’t just a twisted ankle or a pulled muscle. His stomach lurched as he leapt off the bed.
“Aubrey, sweetheart,” he said, his voice smooth and comforting as it could be over the phone. He shoved his feet into his sneakers, banging his heels down into the back of them without being able to use his hands, and began to race out towards his small, battered car. “I’m sorry,” he knew that any knock now would affect the audition, whether in terms of health or lack of practice. “Five minutes, I’ll be there soon. I love you.”
He opened his car door and kicked it open for long enough for him to slip in and turn the engine. He fought to get his belt around him and started the engine, roaringly loud as it was in such a small car. “Is anyone else there with you?” He was torn over what he wanted the answer to be. He knew that there was a chance that her usual dance partner had been there at the time, but although he wasn’t usually jealous of the inevitable closeness of his girlfriend and another man, he still felt that he should be the first to offer her the comfort she needed. On the other hand, though, he would also feel better to know that she wasn’t suffering alone while he drove the short journey to the hospital.

Aubrey had missed the time she'd been away from Kris while she'd been training. But she was grateful that she had a boyfriend who understood how important this was to her and that she needed just a little more time to devote to her craft. He had been completely supportive during the whole process. She felt a bit guilty neglecting him so much, and even more so when she chose to call him now, after being away so long, but she knew he was the person she could count on. He was the only one she wanted to see right then.
Aubrey could hear shuffling on the other end of the phone as she told him what was wrong. She appreciated that she didn't even need to ask him to meet her there, she knew he was already on his way, the perfect boyfriend. Just hearing his voice helped a little to stop her lip from quivering at the other end. She knew he understood how serious this was for her, what it could mean for her career. She nodded as he said he'd be there in five minutes. "Thank you" She said softly, hoping he knew how much it meant to her that he'd race over. This wasn't anything life threatening, it wasn't even emergent enough that the nurses thought she'd be seen by a doctor anytime soon. It was a knee injury. But he understood.
"I love you too" She said teary eyed, wondering if she couldnt dance anymore, if she would still be the kind of girl Kris would love. She knew it was probably foolish but her whole identity had gotten so wrapped up in it these last few months that the thought scared her, that she could lose him too.
She swallowed as he asked if anyone else was with her. She had sent her dance partner, Vincent, home an hour before the fall. He was starting to get the flu and she thought he should rest, and knew she could practice on her own. "No, Vince had already left...I havent called my parents yet...I dont want to worry them, until I know what's wrong"

Kris paused as he heard his hurt girlfriend on the other end of the line thank him for going to be with her. His face creased with the sincerity of the emotion he felt towards the woman lying on a hospital bed, which also leaked into the tone of his words. “You don’t need to thank me; you know I always want to be there for you.”
He said it as a heartfelt statement rather than asking her the question – he was as confident of her feelings for him as he was of his for her. And as if to reinforce his confidence in their relationship, he then heard her respond to his own declaration of love with one of her own. It was only occasionally that he thought badly of the inevitable closeness that evolved between Aubrey and her dance partner, Vincent, but it was more a sense of missing out on parts of his girlfriend’s life rather than any other worry – and just because she trusted Aubrey, it didn’t mean he trusted her dance partner so much.
“That’s okay,” he said, his voice low and smooth in an attempt to calm her down as she told him that Vince wasn’t there and that her parents didn’t know. He picked up a rag from the driver’s door storage and began swiping at the condensation that had gathered inside the windscreen and then turned his rather poor heater up to full to beat it away. He then reached around to pull his seatbelt on and released the handbrake. “I’ll take care of you. Try not to worry.”
He pulled his lower lip in between his teeth, gnawing on it lightly as he pulled out on to the main road and began his journey to the hospital. “Whatever has happened, we’ll deal with it,” he told her, trying to sound confident whilst concentrating on driving at the same time. “It might not even be anything.”

Aubrey wiped away a few tears from her cheek with her free hand, giving a small but sincere smile as she heard him say how he didnt need thanks for coming, that he always wanted to be there for her. She knew it was true, that he did love her, and would be there for her whenever she needed him, just like she would be for him, but it still felt nice to hear the reassurance, especially at a time like this. Telling him she loved him over the phone, she knew she hadn't been saying it enough, for as wonderful as Kris was, and how good he was to her. She had been spending so much time away lately, barely acting like a girlfriend because of her practicing (with another man even) she was lucky he was still there to come when she needed him.
Aubrey sniffed lightly on the other end as he told her it was okay, trying to pull herself together, and feeling better knowing she'd soon have her boyfriend at her side. She didnt want Vince or her parents to come. Vince would be worried but she knew she'd also see the critical eye, wondering if he should be getting a new partner soon. And her parents would be overly concerned, possibly scolding for overworking herself, and not fully able to grasp what this all meant to her anyway. It would be easier to deal with them later. Kris was all she needed. She felt loved as he told her to not worry that he'd take care of her. "I'll try...and please drive safely too..I can wait" She told him, not wanting him to rush and get into an accident.
She blinked away another tear as he told her they'd deal with whatever happened. He seemed so sure that no matter what they'd get through it. She had to have faith in that. She tried to latch on to the hope he gave that maybe it was nothing. She knew there was pain and her instincts told her it was bad, but she tried to convince herself that was just her own worrying, jumping to the worst conclusion. "You're right...I dont know yet...maybe it just needs a little ice" She said trying to keep the possibility in her thoughts that she could still dance after today.

Kris smiled as Aubrey told him that she would try not to worry, knowing that she’d be able to hear it in his voice. He knew it was much easier said than done to tell people not to worry, but there was very little he could do just then while he was driving to the hospital. It was just so much like her to switch the focus of her worry from herself to him as he drove to her. It was sweet of her, but when he told her not to worry, he didn’t want her worrying about him either. As always, he wanted the best for her.
“I always do,” he told her, reassuringly. Happily, the roads were quiet at least, which meant that he didn’t have much to do to make sure that he wasn’t dangerous to himself or anyone else, but also so that he wasn’t caught by any traffic officers for driving while on the phone. Even though she had told him that she could wait for him to get there, he didn’t like to. He was as anxious to see her as he assumed she was to see him – it was hard to be supportive from the end of the telephone line.
“That’s the spirit,” he told her, his voice soft and gentle. He didn’t want to give his girlfriend a false sense of hope, but he didn’t want her to panic while he wasn’t there to comfort her either. Happily, it didn’t take long to drive over to Forks Hospital, which was partly thanks to where he lived in Forks, but more or less anywhere within the town’s boundary was within a ten-minute drive time. It helped alleviate the worry that the doctors would get to see her before he got there.
Turning into the parking lot, he found the closest parking space to the hospital that he could park in and walked briskly towards the reception area. “Aubrey, honey, I’m here now. I’ll need to hang up, but I’ll be at your side in less than two minutes. Love you,” he told her, before cutting the line off.
Wasting no time, he walked up to the front desk, but was told that it was family only. However, less than two minutes later he approached Aubrey, speeding up to a jog to get to his girlfriend all the quicker. He kissed her on the head, his arms going around her before he even had the chance to say anything. “How’re you holding up?” he looked at her, his blue eyes concerned and filled with love; he kissed her once more.

Aubrey knew that her boyfriend was a good driver, but she still was worried that with the nature of her phone call he might end up trying to rush getting to the hospital. She knew that it wasn't a life or death situation and didnt want him risking his life by speeding through intersections, but hearing his reassurance helped remind her how level headed he was. She knew if the situation was reversed she may not be as sensible.
Aubrey gave a light sniff trying to collect herself as Kris told her that he was at the hospital so would have to hang up. "Okay...I love you too, see you soon" She said her voice cracking as she hung up the phone. It felt reassuring to know he was so close, and that he had dropped everything to come be at her side, but she still knew the reason he had to be here was because it could be serious for her. If it was a minor twist she could have walked off, she could have just told him about it in the morning. But she was here instead.
She expected it to take him longer to get through the hoards of nurses and administrative personnel at the front desk but was pleasantly surprised to see him jogging up to join her. Aubrey smiled at him through watery eyes, putting her arms around him as soon as he was close enough to grab. She leaned her head against his chest. She could feel the sobs building up inside of her again as he asked how she was. It was like a pressure in the back of her throat, that she tried to fight off to be strong for him. "I'm so glad you're here....I just...it can't be bad news Kris...not now"

A light smile briefly passed over Kris' lips as he heard his girlfriend tell him that she loved him too as they hung up. It wasn't that the declaration was new to them or that the situation made him feel particularly sappy, but those simple words always filled him with a warm glow, no matter what. It also made him want all the more to be at her side as she went through what was happening, knowing that all sorts would be rampaging through her mind in regards to her dancing. He knew that when he broke his hand before he had even started high school he had dreamed and fretted over it resetting itself into some kind of deformed claw that would prevent him from playing his instruments. He had been lucky then, as his parents had told him, and he could only hope that Aubrey would be the same. He knew how much a dancing career meant to her and he was prepared to jet set along with her to wherever it would take her.
Getting past the nurses and reception staff of the lobby had seemed like a daunting task as he had first stepped into the bustling room, but either he was just lucky or his desire to be with his girlfriend leant to the stories he told to let him pass by under the radar. Still, he was just grateful to be with Aubrey and available to support her or just be there with her, whatever she needed.
As soon as Aubrey’s arms closed around him, his own responded, pulling her close and holding her against his chest. He used one hand to stroke her hair, brushing it lightly away from her face in even strokes. His face caved into empathic sympathy and he tipped his chin down to kiss the hair that he had just smoothed down as he could hear the pressure in her voice.
“I know, I know,” he said softly, first squeezing her tight to his chest and then holding her away slightly so that he could see her face. He meant it when he said that he understood the pain that she was going through and he just hoped that she knew that. He cast her a tentative smile, keeping his arms loosely around her. “We don’t know anything yet,” he told her, trying to be calm for her benefit. “I know it’s hard, but try not to let your imagination run away with you.”

Just having Kris here with her now helped Aubrey to feel a little better. Having him hold her helped her to believe that things could still be okay. He was here, supporting her, just like always so maybe nothing else would change either. She hoped and prayed she was just being overly dramatic in her reaction to her injury and that it would all turn out to be fine. Maybe if she really needed to they'd let her move back her audition a week or so and she'd still be able to make it.
As he pulled away enough that they could look at each other she tilted up her head and could see that understood her pain and fears completely. He wasn't looking at her with pity like he knew some others would but just understanding and loving support. She nodded as he told her that they didnt know anything for sure yet. "I know its just not easy to stop thinking about the worst case scenario right now"
"They said they'll do a scan and see how bad it is, whether it needs to just get iced and wrapped or...something more" She said praying it was the first. " Thank you for being here...I hope I didnt interrupt your practice.." She said now feeling guilty as she became calmer that maybe she had called at an inconvenient time for him. Yes she had been freaking out but it wasn't what would be seen as an emergency for most people.
