[1935]
The sun was beginning to dip low in the East, peeking through the lower summits on the nearby mountain range. Rosalie Hale had set out to hunt alone, despite the protests coming from Carlisle. She was barely two years old into this new life, and her control over her thirst was a very fragile thing. Choosing the vegetarian diet and living with the Cullens had not been difficult at all, though the execution had proven to be agonizing. Rosalie couldn't bear the thought of being alone, especially after the paralyzing discovery of what she had become. It was difficult every single moment. It was almost impossible to see past the unrelenting thirst that burned her throat. It wasn't until recently that Rosalie had been able to find small remnants of her past self herself in her new glorious and immortal form. She got to know the Cullens better; Carlisle the compassionate doctor, Esme his devoted wife and Edward... their know-it-all, mind-reading son. In many ways, she was already considering them to be family.
Their argument was short, but volatile (on her end). Carlisle said that her last solo trip was something that he could not deny her, but he felt that she still needed a companion while hunting... just in case. Rosalie needed to know that she could hunt on her own without Carlisle and Esme supervising and Edward invading her mind. In the end she had won, and had set out on her own. Two hours later, her eyes had set to a lovely caramel color that accented her perfect face. She had been infinitely smug at her success and had started her run back to gloat to Edward. She ran at her fastest sprint, which was now slower than it had been a year ago. It bothered her when her mighty strength and speed had slowed, and they explained to her that the exceptional abilities only lasted the first year. She didn't mind it that much, except for when Edward outran her. She suddenly heard a distinct shuffle in the wind. An savage roar cut through the air, followed by a painful human one. Rosalie's reflexes immediately changed her course, towards the source of the commotion...

It had still been dark and still when Emmett had set out on the hiking trip with his family that morning. As the sun had climbed high and high in the sky, the McCarty family had traveled deeper and deeper into the forest. At some point Emmett had become separated from his family, he didn’t know how, but in an attempt to find them he had only become more lost. Been lost didn’t worry Emmett, he knew he’d find his way back to the trail and back to the rest of his group.
Leaning against a large rock he removed a stone from his show then relaxed back enjoying the sun on his face. His eyes were closed when he heard the movement in the tree line somewhere close to him. His mind wasn’t quick enough to process the information and send the order to move as his eyes flew open and saw the large bear coming at him from out of the tree line. Even if he had stood up, Emmett knew the bear would have still have towered over him. Yet it wasn’t been resigned to destruction that pinned him to spot, rather it was the shock of it all. His mind raced with telling his father of the size of this bear, Regaling girls with his bear fighting stories and boasting of the one that got away.
His mind was took crowded with all these thoughts as the bear rushed him and let out its deafening roar. The tingle of the ringing in Emmett’s ears was quickly taken over by the pain as the bear reached out and shredded the skin of his chest and the clothing covering it. Emmett had always had a sense of pride about his pain thresh hold yet here in the depths of the woods it was all forgotten as he let out a piercing scream. His blood quickly leapt to the surface of his skin, only serving to encourage the bear to strike again and again. Emmett felt each skin ripping blow, but his brain and mouth failed to communicate into any more screams. His drooping eyes focused on the beast and he took in its soft looking brown fur, and the smell of a musty coat that surrounded it. His head fell back and he stared unseeing at the sky.
As Emmett stared upwards he wasn’t sure if the bear had stopped its attack or if he just stopped feeling the deathly blows. It wasn’t a thought that really passed through his mind as his vision darkened and fell to black. His hearing was the last thing to leave him though he wasn’t sure he could process it because he was sure he heard more movement close by.

Rosalie judged that she was only a few hundred yards away from the sounds she'd heard when she smelled something far better, and worse. Mingled in the air with the wild scent of the bear, was the sweet aroma of human blood. It immediately set Rose's throat on fire and added new velocity to her stride. Her mind was no longer in charge, only her instincts and the unbearable scorching of her throat, which erupted in a hungry snarl. While she could not will herself to be reasonable, the smallest portion of her expansive mind was panicking. This was exactly what Carlisle and the others had been worried about, and now she would return in defeat after feeding on this human's sweet blood. While acting on revenge in Rochester, she knew what to expect and had exhibited uncommon control when around the men she had killed. But this had caught her off guard. Her instincts had complete control. Rosalie whipped through the trees towards the source of the scent, the growl in her voice just about to erupt.
She saw the bear first, large and powerful, hovering over the man it had attacked. The bear reared on its hind legs before reaching down and swiping again at the defenseless human. Charging at full speed, Rosalie threw herself at the enormous bear, knocking him to the ground. In her singleminded hunt, she bent down and let her razor sharp teeth find the bear's neck. She had only drained the great bear half the way when the breeze picked up, and her sense registered the human's sweet scent again. She abandoned the bear and quickly turned around, leaning into her crouch and hissing lowly. She had never tasted human blood before, but the scent alone was so seductive that it told her that it would be blissful as it slithered down her throat. She growled in anguish as she realized the horror of what she was about to do, and realizing that she couldn't stop herself.
She opened her eyes and looked at the dying man, mangled by the bears great claws. Through the throbbing temptation of human blood, Rosalie was suddenly in a different world. In a different time. Her human memories were sometimes difficult to remember, but this one in particular she knew she would always carry with her. There on the edge of wilderness, Rosalie saw this man's face, grimacing in pain, and beyond it she saw the last child her human eyes had registered. Little Henry, the sweet little boy that Vera had given birth to. He saw the infant's curls, dimples and pure innocence in the face of this hunter who had crossed paths with a being much to strong for him. Startled that she would have such a thought, at such a moment, Rosalie found herself staring, though still in agony over the man's blood dripping from his wounds.
This man hadn't deserved to die, or to be attacked, just like she did. She saw it in his eyes, in the agony that told her that nothing else had ever hurt as it did in that moment. He was so like little Henry, but the image was incomplete and wrong. The man was shredded by the bear, his face contorted in pain, pale white from the shock and loss of blood. If only she could fix it, just to see. Just to see little Henry's face. In the same thought Rosalie gasp at the conclusion her mind had brought her to.
She could fix it. Well certainly not her, she wasn't stupid. She was no where near the control that Carlisle had. Was this what Carlisle was thinking when he'd seen her dying in the middle of the street that night? When she was mangled on the street? Yes, Carlisle. He would do it, right? She looked again at the man in her arms, and decided that she needed Carlisle to do it. Fighting the roaring domination of her instincts that begged her to ravish the poor hunter to quench her thirst, Rosalie held her breath and stood up from her crouch with the man in her arms.

Forcing at least a part of his mind back through the blackness Emmett opened his eyes. His mind fought against the action, it would be unable to cope with the sight of another bear. However, it wasn’t a vision of approaching doom that Emmett witnessed when he cracked open his eyes. Before him he saw an angel. She was beautiful and glowed in the light of day. He knew then that death was coming, but he wasn’t scared. If she was his guide to death, how could he be afraid?
He felt the sensation of floating as his eyes fell shut again and the ground fell from beneath him. The pain was covering his whole body, but yet he was feeling less and less. He could feel cold, cold and numbness setting in. Emmett knew enough that the end was near, but all these sensation retreated as he became aware of flying as the air rushed past his face. His guessed that if he could open his eyes that the world would be rushing away from him, but his brain wouldn’t cooperate this time. His eyes wouldn’t obey the command, thought he didn’t mind. Seeing it might make it less real, seeing the truth would spoil the journey to heaven.
He relaxed, as best one can do in pain, in to the embrace of his Angel. He succumbed to the darkness that had taken his sight and now took ate away at his mind and thoughts. He sighed and let it take him completely this time. Why should he fear death with such a beautiful guide?

When she had the man secure in her marble arms, Rosalie sprinted as hard as she could, heading back to Carlisle. Her mind was yelling insanities at her, willing her to stop her madness. All she had to do was lean her head in, and touch her lips to his neck; it would be so easy. She didn't have to tell Carlisle if she wanted to. Maybe if she finished off the bear she'd started on afterwards, the reddish hint of the human blood she'd tasted wouldn't register in her eyes. She wasn't sure, but every inch of her burning neck begged for it, telling her that it would be worth it. She held her breath now, but her memory relished the scent that had entered her, imploring her to taste.
But she couldn't bring herself to do it. Not to him. He who was so hurt and scared with the blood dripping from his face and matting his curls. She ran at top speed for what like felt an eternity, until she caught her own scent, showing her the way home. A small yelp of despair escaped her perfect lips when she remembered how far it was. She wasn't going to make it. He was so weak, and his blood... so pungent. She just had to stop, and take him right there. She'd taste what she was yearning for, she feel relief from the burn and this man's suffering would end. It would be an act of mercy. Her stride faltered slightly as she considered it more, but her topaz eyes darted down to his face again when she felt felt him lose consciousness in her arms, his arms falling limply.
At the smallest sigh from his lips, Rosalie let out a sob of anguish, of torture. Tears would be dripping from her eyes, stinging the man's wounds, if she were able to produce them. She couldn't do it, as much as she needed it. But she was so afraid that she'd lose control. But she had to try. She would take him to Carlisle. She could fix him and prove that he was innocent, just as she had once been. Just like Henry was. She readjusted his limp form in her arms, her face in anguish and once again picked up her pace, pushing her muscles to their limit, racing to the house.

He succumbed to the darkness and to the nothingness; Death, was his only thought. He didn't welcome it, or even ask for it; no it was more an inevitable destination. As he felt his body cradled and floating to whatever end it was heading he though he heard his angle sigh. He though it perhaps a sigh of contentment for the journey been over, but still he felt the journey continue.
He watched as his mind replayed parts of his life. He saw his birthdays and Christmases all fly past his eyes. His first kiss, his last hug; all as clear as crystal if a little fast then real time. The last image that played before his eyes was one he didn't really want to see. It was the attack, he watched from his own eyes as the bear tore him to pieces. He saw not hate or malice in the animals’ eyes, only instinct. The image played past the part where Emmett had stopped registering. It was then he saw her, his savior. Her blonde hair flew around her like a glowing golden halo. Her face was to pretty to be human or even of this realm. She'd saved him, come to him and rescued him. If his muscles had have listened to his brains command he would have smiled, instead a wave of contentment washed over his as he held her face in his minds eye. His beautiful Angel.

Had any human been near the trail Rosalie was sprinting on at her highest speed, they would have imagined seeing a fierce, magnificent goddess with her merciful arms carrying a dying man in her arms to safety. The burgundy, knee high dress she'd changed into that morning was barely ruffled under the intense speed of her stride and her beige heels were muffled under her step. She'd donned a light jacket to avoid any curious stares about the girl withstanding those temperatures without cover once she'd reached the town, and it too seemed unaware of the stress the arms were under. The only true sign of motion was the golden flow of wavy hair flared up from the burst of speed. For the last 30 miles, Rosalie's expression varied from the most excruciating pain, the deepest pits of hellish fright, and stone determination.
The perfect face immortality had granted her was twisted in anguish and conflict, and still managed to be impossibly beautiful. As she ran she remembered the scent of the mans's blood when she had first run towards the noise in the mountains. She remember how easily her will had crumbled against her instinct, instantly seeking the very thing she thirsted for the most. She was wondering how it was possible that she could now be carrying the man in her arm, and somehow not allow her knees to buckle to just take him right where they were. But as these visions came to her, she saw the grimace of pain he still wore in unconsciousness. The blood-matted curls and dimples that were so like the child she had started to love. The one that had given her hope in a loveless marriage she had accepted. It was an image that still haunted her, and the man's face brought forward the sensation it used to cause her. Hope wasn't something she had felt since she had died on that April night, and reborn. But something in her was grasping for that feeling, and it had something to do with him. She needed to get to to Carlisle; it was her only chance.
When she finally reached the town they were living, Rosalie had to be more discreet, using shadows, rooftops and alleyways to find her way home. The only thing that had gone right that day was that she had arrived after sunset. The darkness would be her ally if only for this night, when so long ago it had betrayed her. When she was barely a few miles away, the goddess shook slightly in panic, hearing the man's pulse slow, the blood flowing out at a more lazy pace. She dodged other citizens in silence and swiftness, her mind pushing her one last time and with renewed vigor to devour this man's blood before she reached Carlisle, before it was too late.
But her last steps took her across the threshold, where she could not stand it any longer. Her 100 mile struggle with the violent lashes of her instinct, driving her to satisfy the scorching fury in her throat, brought her to her hands and knees, dropping the man on the wooden floor. "Carlisle," she whispered to the ground where her fingers were clawing into the oak, with silent sobs to follow. She could only bring the man this far; she had reached the limit of her powers. Now it was Carlisle who she asked for help. Not just for him, but for herself. The sound she had used to summon Carlisle would have sufficed to bring him, but the urgency and need for the life of this man and her sanity brought her to utter it once again. "Carlisle!"

It had been two years since Carlisle had made the decision to transform the latest member of his family into one of them and now he was busy pacing, in a very human manner, along the upstairs landing. It was the first time Rosalie had been hunting on her own and Carlisle would been a bad liar if he said he wasn’t worried. He hadn’t even gone to work that day in his worry for the young woman that he considered to be as near to his heart as a daughter. He had been surprised at her apparent ease with the vegetarian life style from being a newborn, from that time in Rochester where she carefully avoided spilling blood, to her faultless track record when hunting with himself and Edward. He worried that she had crossed the path of a human whilst in the throes of her predatory instinct; he worried that someone or something had crossed her and hurt her or in some way; he just worried. The only reason he was up the stairs was because if he was closer to the door he would be on her scent, making sure she was okay. He was glad that Esme and Edward were elsewhere that evening, they weren’t used to seeing him like this and he wouldn’t have allowed them to. There was something to be said for expressing oneself in an entirely human manner, rather than trying to be the strong patriarchal figure that he knew he must be.
He wasn’t entirely sure how long he had been pacing. It wasn’t as if his legs were tiring from the repetition and the distance they had travelled - he had to rely on a time piece to tell him how long she had been away. He glanced at his watch, his brow slightly furrowed. It had only been a few hours, so she would be in their normal hunting grounds. She should have been able to locate and feed from a bear, maybe, by now - it was getting into season. As he paced he followed her imagined progress, persuading himself that she would be alright, that he hadn’t failed her by not being stronger in opposition to her going out to hunt alone. There was nothing like a father fretting for his first and only daughter.
Countless time later Carlisle’s head snapped up, alerted by the door swinging open, the incredibly strong scents of bountiful human blood and the sweet musk of his vampiric daughter all at once. A split second later he heard his name being called, first quietly and then with an urgency that he could not ignore. He raced down the stairs using the full speed of his enhanced abilities and stopped so that he was stood above the mauled boy that Rosalie had brought him. His amber eyes viewed her distraught face, she looked in pain, that was for sure and then bounced down towards the man. Of course his first thought was that they had made a mistake in allowing Rose to hunt alone so early, but as his eyes took in the sight of the young man he noticed the nature of the wounds. They were wide and ragged. This wasn’t the work of a graceful vampire kill, but something much more brutal. His head snapped back up to Rose and he belatedly noticed that her eyes lacked the crimson hue of human blood and that her resolve seemed to be failing.
He leaned over the prone body of the large boy and put his hands out to grip both of Rose’s forearms, steadying her, comforting her, and perhaps most importantly, restraining her. He was surprised that she had made it this far and there was only one reason she would have brought him to her. His face, now only inches from hers, looked at her intensely, his eyes flashing from one of hers to another to figure out her true intent. He would only do this if she absolutely, really meant it. It wasn’t a change that was taken to lightly - he had learnt that from the three vampires he had made over the last couple of decades.
“Rose?” he questioned, knowing that he didn’t need to ask the whole question. The boy only had minutes of life left in him, that was clear, he needed a decision now.

It took all she had to keep herself attached to Carlisle when he grasped her by the arms. Had he tried to restrain her a year eariler, she would have seriously hurt him. Rose held onto Carlisle, the man she had started to consider her father more than she had ever regarded her human one. As a girl, people had not been able to compare to her beauty, and had offered gifts and praises instead. But Carlisle was the first person that had offered her sympathy, security and other things that she had not even considered before she had seen them in Carlisle. Though the vampire life was his greatest gift to her, one that she still had trouble swallowing, she had come with this man in her arms for yet a much bigger request; one that would never compare with anything she had ever asked for or had been given.
Rose sobbed again as Carlisle said her name, with the full knowledge of what she was asking for throbbing behind it. She almost wanted to laugh. Since the moment she had entered this life and family, she had seen the most amazing amount of compassion, devotion, intuition and understanding. It was almost supernatural within itself. It shouldn't have surprised her that after walking in covered in a man's blood that she had not given in to drink that Carlisle would know exactly what it meant.
Bracing herself there, she was prepared for anything but this man's death. She was prepared to beg if she had to. Her grip on Carlisle was shaking violently as her mind warned her that her time was almost up. Just a few more words and Carlisle would take this delicious opportunity from her, whether he changed him or not. But the need that had been born within her as she raced home with the man in her arms was steadily growing. It did not compete with her thirst; it was a different kind of need. She couldn't see his life end.
Controlling her crying for fear that her air supply would expend again, she looked at Carlisle with a set of churning topaz eyes, pleading with every golden flick of the iris. If he wanted her to ask for nothing more, she wouldn't. If he wanted her to never hunt alone again, she wouldn't do that either. She would deny him nothing. "Please."

Every single fraction of every degree of Carlisle’s attention was on Rosalie at that moment, hurting to see her hurt, to see her so affected by this man’s death. As far as he was aware, she had never met him before, this was a compulsive act, one that he could relate to from when he made his decision to turn Esme. He was also relieved to see that she hadn’t taken it upon herself to try to activate the transformation - that she trusted him so much. He squeezed her forearms in a comforting manner, desperately wanting to make her feel better, he would do anything he could. Another thought struck him, though. Not one of his family had seen what he was like after he bit a human, it had always been done in private and he had no desire for his daughter to see him as a monster. And he wasn’t entirely sure she would have the resolve to passively watch the bite. He opened his mouth to speak just as the burly young man lifted his blood-covered hand to Rosalie’s face, making his eyes bulge. He whipped one had away from Rose’s forearm and propelled it down, but the strength had already failed the boy.
“I’ll do it,” he told his daughter, looking back over to her distraught face, a frown furrowing his brow. “If it’s truly what you want, then I will.”
He let go of her, giving her a final warning glance as he trusted her movements to herself. He crouched over the boy, creating a cage of protection, but also psyching himself up to the horrendous effects of the bite for both himself and for the young man. He angled his head back up to Rose.
“Go change, burn the clothes. It’ll make you feel better,” he paused, giving her a transparently honest look. “You have to be in control, okay? Once this begins I’m not going to be able to stop you.”
Lack of control was something that Carlisle never admitted to, the statement was a big one for him to make. He relied on humans and vampires alike to believe in his confidence, to feel safe around him and to trust him. However, the old vampire knew that for a while after the bite was administered he would be as desiring of the human’s blood as he was when he had first embarked upon the vegetarian lifestyle. No, if Rose lunged for him then he would be no help.

Rosalie's grip on Carlisle tightened with tension as she saw him consider what she was asking for. She shook where she was, holding her breath still and continually fighting the irresistible temptation right beside there on the ground. She recognized the spark of intelligence she saw in his eyes often, but it was mostly overwhelmed by a softness that she had not seen in any other being. She clung to that look and hoped that it indicated the mercy she needed to help her. To her horror, the man demanded that he not be forgotten and her lifted his hand to touch Rosalie. She turned her head away as Carlisle blocked him. Her will was fading, but she needed to know Carlisle's answer.
She turned once more to look at the mauled man on their floor, bleeding to death. His young, handsome features distorted by the savagery of the bear he'd encountered. She held her gaze only a moment longer when she snapped her head back to look at Carlisle with wide eyes. He would do it. An intense wave of gratitude and appreciation flooded her body; she knew she'd never be able to make it up to him, but she would spend eternity trying. She couldn't speak now, and only nodded with fervent need. There was no question, she needed him to live... even if it was their life.
Bracing herself when he let her go, she allowed him to approach the man. A look of worry strained her face when he ordered her to change. She couldn't possibly tear herself away from the stranger; just the thought of the shortest distance between them caused her pain. Little by little, her own life was becoming dependent on the outcome of this night. But she couldn't imagine disobeying Carlisle after he'd agreed to this. She told herself that Carlisle was right. She had brought him all this way and it would be foolish if she didn't take any precautions while being here. She nodded again, knowing that her control had never been more important than it had been before. This morning she had thought it was just something that needed to be prodded and tested in its limitations. Now she realized that she must master herself at this very moment.
She sprinted at her fastest pace to her room before she stripped down to nothing. She quickly found a floral number that she'd never worn before and a pair of flats. She still did not dare to breathe while the blood-stained clothes were so nearby. She had put just a little distance between herself and the source, but she knew that walls would not stop her if she did not practice caution. Jumping out her second story window with her old clothes and a small box matches, she landed with the softest thud on the grassy patch just outside their backdoor. She didn't dare go farther than she already was. She may not be allowed to be in the same room with him right now, but at least from here she can still listen in while doing what she was told.

Carlisle continued to stare at his daughter, now glad that he had hunted recently, recent enough to still show in the light gold colouring of his eyes. That would soon change, though, he knew that, but at least he had enough animal blood in him to bolster his tolerance to the human. The ferocity of her shakes were enough to stall his move towards the boy, carefully checking to make sure she would be able to handle herself. He nodded, briefly, accepting her wide-eyed gratitude in the quickest way he could - he understood her need to get away from the scene as soon as possible - she was still young.
He waited, biding his time as he crouched above the young man, wanting to allow Rosalie time to get at least a few metres away before he committed the savage yet saving act. He could see in her exaggerated response to the young man’s presence that this was a strong connection she felt, such as the one that he did when he encountered Esme. It was certainly something he couldn’t deny her, especially as the boy was in the final minutes of his life anyway. He didn’t need to look away from the stranger’s mauled face to know that his daughter had left the immediate vicinity, giving him the opportunity to act.
He leant down, close to the boy’s ear, choosing to choose with him what he was about to do before he did so. He always did - even in the direst moment of life, it was amazing what the human or transforming brain could retain - he didn’t want to be the creature of their nightmares when they came to terms with what they had become. “Try to relax,” he murmured, knowing that it was probably impossible for him to do so, but it gave him some kind of introduction. “Don’t worry, you’re going to be fine. I am going to cure you of your wounds, but it is going to hurt more first… Forgive me.”
With that he leant to the boy’s neck, bearing his teeth to cut the skin at the right point of his neck, where the blood was travelling fastest. At the very slightest of pressure his stunningly sharp teeth the delicate skin split, spewing hot blood into his mouth. Carlisle’s eyes slammed shut at the sensation, using every fraction of his conscience to ignore the odd trickle that made it down his throat. In that position he remained for a good half minute, crouching, closely holding the young man in the deadly embrace. All it would take was one wrong move whilst he waited for his venom to infect the stranger’s bloodstream and stop his heart. Once he considered enough time to have passed, Carlisle pushed himself away from the boy’s body, quickly grabbing at a decorative fabric on the side table. He pressed the material to his mouth and nose, attempting to remove the excess blood away from his senses. His eyes looked over the top of it towards the stranger, eyes now beetle black, his face taught as he strained against his darkest nature. He brought up his free hand and pinched the bridge of his nose, allowing himself just a few seconds to fight back the burning thirst attacking his throat.
Now he needed to keep the body going until the venom took over completely and began the healing process. He threw himself to his knees by the boy, allowing his professionalism to overwhelm the thirst, though it was hard pressed to do so and began to assess the cacophony of wounds littering his body.

Setting the blood-stained clothes ablaze and watching the fire with uneasy eyes, Rose listened to Carlisle talking to the man he was about to condemn to eternity. She recalled the softness, yet conviction, his words held. Rosalie's last human moments were difficult to bring up not just because of the horrid condition Carlisle had found her in, but also because most human memories were vague and blurry. She remembered not really understanding what he had said to her that night in the street as she watched the snowflakes tumble their way down, but she remembered how his voice sounded. The words may not have been the same, but she heard the vow in them as she had that night.
Rose tried to concentrate on the flames that were consuming the clothes she'd worn that day, bringing this man to Carlisle. Another string of worries and doubts struck her resolve.
but it is going to hurt more first… Forgive me.
The flames she saw before her eating away at her clothes was nothing compared to the intense pyre that the transformation was. Was she out of her mind? Is this what she had brought the man with the sweet face for? To burn him alive? To make him suffer the fiercest depths of pain? She remembered very vividly those few days of her transformation. The feeling of being trapped in some sort of purgatory, though she could not think of why. Bringing him to Carlisle would imprison him in the worst amount and variety of pain that no mortal could have conceived. She would forever be burdened by this choice today, but she would endure it to save him.
Her body tensed as her sensitive hearing picked up the subtle sound of Carlisle's razor sharp teeth slice through the man's throat. Rose's hand reflexively came up to trace the only scar that marked her perfect body, where Carlisle had bit her two years ago. The wind blew against her and towards the house, while she faced away. She took advantage and took in a lungful. It was mostly clean, but she still discerned the slight scent of the human in the air. Her throat instinctively erupted in a snarl. It took the remainder of her will to keep herself steady, facing away from the house, looking into the small pyre she'd created. "Sorry," she whispered, knowing Carlisle would hear her. "I'm in control, I promise."

It was just as Carlisle threw himself to his knees at Emmett’s side that he heard the snarl filter in his direction. His head immediately bobbed up from his work, eyes looking towards Rosalie’s location in alarm. She was closer than she ought to be, but he wouldn’t send her further, knowing that it must be difficult for her to be so far from him. He tautened his muscles, ready to defend the bleeding boy from his blond daughter if need be. He had found that he had regained his composure much more quickly than he had expected. Perhaps it was because this was the fourth human he had changed to vampire form, or perhaps because his injuries really did press the issue of keeping him alive long enough for the venom to take. Either way, the burning thirst was playing second fiddle to his will to save Emmett’s life, which would also fit into protecting him from Rosalie.
However, before Carlisle’s somewhat frenzied thoughts got any further the rest of Rosalie’s words came through, mere whispers on the air. He exhaled the rest of his air in relief and got to his feet. He turned away from the body and inhaled sharply into the crook of his elbow. It didn’t stop the scent much, but it was enough to stop him from increasing the blood lust too much.
“You’re doing well, Rosalie,” he said, his tone sounding somewhat more strangled than usual as he tried to conserve his air - it was just easier if he didn’t breath so soon after tasting the alluring blood. “I know you can do this, you’re making me proud.”
A small smile kinked his mouth as he returned his full attention back to Emmett, pressing down on a worryingly bloody wound that appeared to resist clotting. His amber eyes glanced around at the state of the hall. Once the venom had started to heal the wounds properly and taken the job out of his hands, he would have to transfer the boy to somewhere more comfortable, if that was possible, and destroy the scent of the blood there.

Through the darkness which seemed to be ever darkening Emmett heard a voice so clear and so close he could have almost reached out to touch, if his limbs had still be working. The voice spoke of healing, but more pain. How? Was Emmett’s only reacting thought; how could he be in more pain then he was right now. His whole body hurt with a pain that wouldn’t stop, subside or just quit
Through the pain and the blackness something else took over; a sudden, sharp stabbing in the side of his neck. Again every reaction told him to reach for the pain, but his body couldn’t react. As the stabbing subsided it was quickly replaced by a new strange sensation of a burning stream that seemed to flow through his already inflamed body. It flowed from the dull sting on his neck and followed the line of his veins but engulfed his muscles, flesh and even his very bones. To say that Emmett felt on fire would only mildly cover it, the pain was like a roasting flame coming from within.
The pain now covered the whole top half of his body and showed no signs of stopping. Emmett felt it creep down his legs and to his feet. Each inch it consumed he longed to cry out and wither in pain but he was frozen still in terror and pain. He felt sure this was death engulfing him, the final bout of life taking pain before the end.
The sound of a growl told him he was not dead, yet suddenly the pain of the bear attack seemed to fade. A growl? Was the angel a dream? Was he still in the forest? His mind tossed out question yet the burning took over. The first movement Emmett felt was the suddenly quaking of his whole body. His head tossed from side to side as if it threatened to completely turn around. His chest convulsed as if rocked by an almighty current of electricity. His legs and arms kicked and waved as if to keep his body afloat in a sea of burning that was still pulling him further under.
Another noised filled his already crowded ears and mind. A screaming; like a steam train whistle. The noise made his throat burn even more then the river of fire that flowed there. It was only the pain of the scream that made him realized it was coming from him; he was the source of the noise.
His eyes flew open taking in fractured images of his surroundings. Tinted by a black mists and a red hue he could see a simple hall - A flash of darkness – a distinguished pale, blonde man. Darkness again as his head flew back at an angle that should have broken his limp neck. There in a flash of heaven was his angel he looked at her quickly before the darkness snapped again.
The screaming continued to erupt from him, this time he punctuated it with cries; “No! No! Please!” He let out the same pleading he felt in his whole body. The burning left no room for tears, but it grip he could still cry out. “Help! Please!” The begging was unnatural for Emmett and had his sense function he may have held them back, but he had no control over his mouth or body; just as he had no control over the burning that continued to consume him.
