[Post Breaking Dawn -Claire, age 18]
When people thought of Washington State, they usually think of rain and snow. And for the most part it was true. For those who live here all their lives, they were given a special treat of a few days out of the year when the weather wasn't just nice, but actually worthy of a day at the beach. Seventy degrees was considered chilly for beach standards, and Claire knew that the water was still cold as she watched the waves crash against the shore, but everyone who lived here was used to it, and would enjoy a rare day like this. Despite the ideal weather that anyone would be excited over, Claire was doing her best to dig a hole into the sand, trying to exert as much of the nervous energy she had accumulated since the night before. She wasn't sure where she was digging to, but it felt better to use her muscles and she was soon out of breath.
Stopping for a bit, she inspected her work and sighed heavily. She wondered if she dug deeper, it would fit both her and Quil. Her mind slowed reluctantly as her thoughts reached Quil, as they usually did, and she didn't fight the smile took over her face. After the yelling and crying and accusing, Claire's life had completely changed. The last year had been absolutely amazing. She had the best boyfriend in the entire world and she loved him like she had never though possible. Now that she had graduated, she had just a future with him to look forward to. It would be simple and perfect. She felt her breathing slow and her nerves calm slightly, though she still felt like throwing herself into the hole. She realized that there was barely space for her legs.
She wasn't expecting him to show up soon since he had patrolled the night before, and was glad for some time to freak out on her own. The events from the night before replayed in her mind as she set out to dig into the sand again. She had reluctantly said goodnight to Qwil and sent him off to his shift before making a quick detour to Forks, and went back home. A quick 15 minute test had sent her into shock before she hid all the evidence and wrestled with her sheets before she went to sleep. When Claire woke up the morning, she had hoped it was all a dream, but a quick trip to the bathroom told her otherwise. She snuck out to the beach and had been sitting there for about 2 hours before starting on her hole in the sand, which she was now convinced she would need once her mother found out.

Quil’s shift that night had gone longer than most. He knew he was having to patrol more frequently lately because of some of the other pack members decisions not to change anymore. Not all of them had decided that, but some of those with imprintees had decided to stay human so that they could age a bit more. He couldn’t blame them really, having similar plans for himself once Claire was just a little older. He knew in his heart that if she hadn’t been a child when they met, he probably would have given up the life of a shapeshifter long ago. But for now he was on patrolling. Things had been quiet around the reservation lately and he couldn’t help to wonder about the new generation of LaPush residents. Would their bloodlines still need to be activated, creating a new pack? Maybe the threat was over now that they wouldn’t need to be called upon. He had never been upset about becoming a wolf like some of the others, maybe because he was the last of his friends to change. It just seemed like acceptance to him, plus there were all the cool extra abilities you got.
As tired as he was after his patrolling, he didn’t sleep all day after. He had gone home in the early morning and set his alarm clock for two hours later, not wanting to sleep through the day. He had a yearning to go see Claire. He always wanted to go see Claire. Night shifts seemed to work best for this so that he could patrol while she slept. He felt like he missed the least amount of her life that way.
As the beeping woke him out of his reverie, he turned off the alarm with a brief groan before remembering why he had wanted to get up. He’d go visit the woman he loved, see if she had any plans for the day, and if she did, if she’d let him tag along. The weather was already warm when he got up that he only threw on a pair of shorts before heading out. He had thought twice about where they might end up and realized that a shirt may be required for later so he stuffed a tshirt into his pocket.
As he headed over to visit Claire he took the path that crossed the beach, smiling as he saw that she happened to be there today instead of at home. She must have woken up early he thought. But he was happy to see her there. He walked up with his hands in his pockets and a grin on his face. He could feel the sand squishing between his bare toes. “Good Morning beautiful”

Making some progress, Claire figured she could fit about half of her body in her new hole in the ground, and she felt some relief in the burn she felt in her arms. She was digging slower, but deeper, trying to keep her mind from running away. The first thing she needed to do was tell Quil. She felt a bit of apprehension at the thought, not really knowing what his reaction would be. Would he be upset? She was considering the option to just go to his house and wake him up and tell him, I’m… ugh. She couldn’t even think it. Hot tears started to well into her eyes, and she let them spill over since no one was around to see them. She hadn’t even been able to look at herself. She’d dressed in the dark and brushed her teeth in her closet. She thought she would have an entire melt down if she did.
Once she ever got past Quil, they’d have to face her parents. She remembered the years she had spent arguing with them because they always seemed to want to restrict her time with Quil. She hadn’t known anything about imprinting, and no clue why they would want to keep her away from her best friend at the time. Well, now they were all terms with everything. Claire and Quil were going to be together; it was meant to be. But she already imagined her father’s reaction to the news that his little girl was… yea. Wiping the tears off with a part of her arm that wasn’t sticky with sand, she gave up on her project and sat with her legs cross. She had been in various states of panic about what everyone would think that she had barely even stopped to react herself. She couldn’t bear to look down, at herself, but she felt her hand slowly make its way to gently touch the waistband of her shorts.
Her head quickly turned to the side after she detected something moving within her sight, and breathed in quickly. She felt panic and relief simultaneously, and quickly got to her feet. She thought she would have had a little bit more time to prepare for this, but now Quil was walking towards her. His easy grin brought her own to match, and despite her confusion and anxiety, she felt a little better that he was there. She smiled wider when he called her beautiful, and walked to meet him halfway. “Morning,” she mumbled before reaching up on the tips of her toes. She used his broad shoulders for support and kissed him lightly on his lips. As expected, she suddenly couldn’t feel that anything could be wrong, not when Quil was there. “I thought you would be sleeping in today,” she told him, a small worry line forming on her brow. “You must be exhausted.”

Quil watched as Claire got to her feet, pulling herself out of the whole she had dug for herself in the sand. There were still so many things about her that reminded him of when she was a little kid. He could remember many days where he took her to the beach and they’d spend the whole day there, just the two of them. She always did like it here, so it wasn’t surprising to see her there now. He smiled as she immediately started moving towards him, meeting him halfway. He loved seeing that she was just as drawn to him as he was to her.
But as Claire walked forward he saw that despite her smile, her eyes seemed a little red and puffy, almost as if she had been crying earlier. He leaned down and returned her kiss, placing his hand on her arm and gently rubbing it. “I took a nap when I got back from patrol” He told her. “I’m still a little tired but I just didn’t want to sleep away the day and not get up til you were ready for bed…I was hoping we could hang out today”
His eyes deepened a little with worry as he looked at the redness around her eyes again once more. Maybe she was just tired, or had gotten sand blown in them, “How are you doing today? Everything alright?”

Claire felt the tenderness of his own kiss calm her nerves just a little more, and comfort from the light touch on his arm. She instinctively let out a sigh, relief settling in that his presence produced. It only took the edge off the anxiety she’d been feeling since she’d woken up, but it was enough for her thoughts to be commanded by him. An easy smile fell on her face, glad to hear that he just wanted to be nearby even though he was so tired. She should have felt guilty, but it barely phased her because she knew that they were both a little selfish when it dealt with the time they spent together. “You should have slept at least a little more,” she reproached him, looking at his face for any signs of fatigue. “Maybe we’ll take a nap later, hmm?”
She saw the smallest flicker in his eyes, one she’d recognized since she was just a kid. She shifted uncomfortably under her weight, knowing that he must have seen past her cheerful expression. Now that she thought about it, she probably looked like hell from crying for the last hour with little break. “I’m ok,” she said quickly, though it was mostly true. “Today’s been… interesting.” Her hesitation lasted a little bit longer as she searched his face again, this time for any indication as to what his reaction might be. She didn’t like walking into this blindly, and thought she would have had another few hours to collect her thoughts. She took his hand and turned back, leading him to her new whole. “Come, I need to talk to you,” she said, barely controlling the trembling of her voice. She glanced at the ocean as they walked back, trying to use the rushing sound of the waves to calm herself

Quil frowned a little as she suggested that he should have slept longer. He wondered if he either looked too tired, or if she had wanted more time to herself. Usually she was so happy to see him that she was glad he hadn’t taken more time alone. “Do I look that sleepy still?” he asked her, wondering how bad he looked after a night of patrolling. He smiled as she suggested that maybe they’d take a nap together later. “Sure, if you want. You feeling under the weather today?” he asked her, wondering if she was tired too, maybe that’s why her eyes looked a little red and puffy, she hadn’t been upset but was just tired, or getting a cold. He was always protective of her, so if she had the slightest bit of illness he’d see to it that she got plenty of rest.
“Interesting? What happened?” Quil asked her, glad to hear that she was okay, but worried about her hesitation and what it meant. Quil let her take his hand and let her lead him over to the hole she had dug in the sand. When she said she needed to talk to him, he heard the trembling of her voice and immediately started feeling nervous. What did she need to talk about? What had happened that could have brought this on? Was she angry at him about something? “What do you want to talk about…are you sure you’re okay? I told you about patrol last night right? I didn’t miss some plans we had or anything…” He said trying to figure out what they’d need to talk about.

Holding his hand, Claire felt like the link to him was the only thing that kept her from having a nervous breakdown right there on the beach on the prettiest day of the year. But the closer they got to the Claire-made ditch in the ground, the tighter the pressure was in her chest. Despite the anxiety, she managed to chuckle a little and shook her head. "You don't look tired," she told him. "It' just that old folks like you should really take care of themselves." She giggled, perhaps a bit louder than intended, trying to mask her thumping heart and dry throat. She had never cared about their age difference, there was no one as perfect as Quil, but it was too easy of a target and she always threw a comment in here and there just to poke fun at him.
They were soon at Claire's hole, and she could only shake her head at his questions. She loved him for being so concerned, but it only made her more nervous as to what he would say. Her mind brought up the image of the plus sign in her mind, still sitting at the bottom of her sock drawer, and she felt the urge rip her hair out and scream. She was so afraid that he would blame her or, even worse, have no reaction at all. What scared her the most was that she couldn't een decide how she felt. One minute she felt like she was flying, seeing Quil with a bundle in his arms and smiling, and the next she felt mortified and wanted to dig deeper into the shores of La Push. "No," she said, unable to keep the swell of emotion from her voice. "You didn't do anything wrong." She hopped the little space where the whole existed so that it stood between them, trying to keep her mind on how she was going to say this. For a few seconds, she paced back and forth on the edge of the ditch, trying to swallow the sob in her throat. She was successful, but she had forgotten about the impending tears, and a few escaped to roll down her face. "I think you should sit down," she decided, nodding because it was the only thing she could be positive about.

Quil laughed as Claire gently mocked his age. “Yeah, better rest up before the Alzheimers and Arthritis start kicking in” He joked with her. The truth was, until he stopped from aging, she’d be more likely to feel the effects of old age than he was. He knew that thought was strange, that in the end, she could appear older than him, though he was so much older than her already. While he had seen a lot, and in ways had matured greatly, when he was around Claire, there were times he still felt like a teenager. She kept him young at heart, not just in appearance.
When Claire told him that he didn’t do anything wrong, instead of assuring Quil, it increased his nerves. What did they need to talk about then? He thought back to her saying today had been interesting. What if she had met someone else? Had she fallen for another guy and was trying to tell him now that she wanted time to see other people. Maybe she was to young to have made such a strong commitment. He hadn’t wanted to overwhelm her, but he wondered now if he had driven her into the arms of another. He also wondered if maybe he had been taking things too fast with her physically. Maybe she hadn’t been ready to take that step in their relationship. He waited until she said she was ready, but maybe it was still too soon.
He watched with growing concern as her eyes teared up and he saw a few streaming down her cheeks, before telling him to sit down. Having to sit down for a talk was never good and only reinforced his worry that this was something really bad. “Claire what’s wrong?” he said then taking her advice took a seat on the edge of the hole she had dug, holding his hand up to help her down. “Please talk to me Claire…no matter what it is, it’ll be okay…”

Frustrated for crying before she could even get the words out, Claire wiped them off quickly and let herself plop onto the ground without taking Quil's hands. She was afraid that she would feel the warmth of his touch only to have him take it away when she told him what it was that had her crying. She let her feet fall into the hole and dig her toes into the sand. Quil had that worried look on her face she recognized. She had seen it so many times before, and he had always made everything better. There hadn't been a time where he didn't at least try, and she wanted to believe that this would be no different. No matter what it was, she wanted to trust that he was the person she could turn to for anything.
Claire wanted to believe him, that everything would be alright, but the very thought of what was going on threw her into a bit of a panic, and she couldn't quite think straight. What would even constitute 'alright'? She took a deep breath, and braced herself because she knew they would both just end up being frantic if she continued stalling. "I didn't go straight home last night," she told him, needing to tell him every part that was inconsistent with the truth along with the truth that was probably going to make her freak out once she said them. "I got a ride to Forks to a Pharmacy, 'cause I didn't want anyone to recognize me." She remembered the look on the cashier's face when she'd paid, and the ride back to La Push as she clutched her plastic bag between her fingers. She closed her eyes, her tears falling freely now, though she fought for control. Her voice broke in several places when she rushed out the last words, like ripping a bandaid off. "I took a pregnancy test and it was positive." Now that it was all out, she was surprised she hadn't started crying loudly like a stupid kid. Instead she fought against the blur of her tears, watching Quil's face.

Seeing Claire wipe away her tears looking so frustrated only did more to increase Quil’s anxiety. He wasn’t sure he had seen her this upset since the night she found out about the imprinting. Things had been happier since then, or at least he thought they had been. Now he wondered how long she had been upset, of if it was just something that had happened today. When she didn’t take his hand, he got even more worried. She didn’t want his comfort. Maybe this was the end of things for them. He took a deep breath, trying to remain calm until he heard the words from her. “Claire, you can tell me anything”
His hands started shaking as she mentioned not going straight home last night. Where had she gone? To meet up with someone else? Did she get hurt or just develop different feelings. He hated not knowing, but waited quietly for her to finish explaining. When she mentioned the pharmacy he wondered if she was sick and hadn’t told him that before. He was scared; more scared now than he had ever been facing a vampire.
But then her next sentence came as a complete shock to him. She took a pregnancy test, and it was positive? His first instinct was to feel ecstatic and give her a huge hug but he saw her tears again and heard her voice cracking as she told him and held back. As much as he wanted a family with her and had dreamed of it, the look on her face was so upset that he couldn’t imagine that she might actually want the baby. “Oh…” He said quietly, not sure what to say when in his mind they had conflicting views on it. He looked down into the sand hole she had dog, his own eyesight becoming a bit blurred. “How….how do you feel about it?” he said needing to hear her say the words, even though he knew what to expect.

Claire felt like she'd been sitting there for hours, looking at Quil's face and waiting for him to react. The moment seemed to string itself along, taunting her before it revealed itself to her. She could barely notice any change, but she thought that nothing his face did could hurt worse than what he said. Oh. Oh? Is that all he had to say? Oh? She saw his hands shake, and felt her chest contract again. It was probably the worst thing she could have imagined and feared. He was mad and now his reaction was Oh. Since the night before when she had learned that she was pregnant, she had tried her very best to suppress any images of him smiling and laughing, picking her up and telling her that it was the best thing that could happen to them. She had been afraid of being disappointed. Now that he seemed almost entirely indifferent, she couldn't stop the images from flooding her mind, slowly breaking her heart.
She closed her eyes, making a new stream of tears, dropped her head and tried to block his face out of her mind. Of all the people in the world, she had wanted so much for him to be happy. Her parents could get angry if they felt like it, but she would have survived anything as long as Quil was fine. Even when Claire didn't know what to do or feel, she had taken her cue from him. But this was entirely different from anything they had ever experienced, and now Claire saw the picture albums of her and Rayen when it was just the two of them, before Tai came back. She brought her hands to her face to hide herself, and couldn't think of a way to answer him. Whatever he had to say to her response was probably going to be even worse. "I'm sorry," she blurted out behind her hands. "I thought we were careful." She had never felt like this in her life. Not even when she thought Quil had been lying to her. But even if he was on the brink of breaking her heart, she would never regret any moment they had spent together.

As Quil watched the new stream of tears flowing from Claire’s eyes his heart felt like it was being shattered in a million tiny pieces to be lost amongst the sand they were sitting in. He had done this to her. He had caused her this distress. She didn’t need to tell him how she felt, it was all over her tear stained face. She hated the thought of carrying his child. She wasn’t ready for it and it wasn’t what she wanted. It tore him in two knowing that this was their baby, the one had dreamed of having, yet she was so upset over it. She must hate him right now.
The words that Claire said next were the last thing Quil had been expecting. Sorry? What on earth did she have to be sorry to him for? He didn’t understand how she could think any of this was her fault when he was very obviously to blame for her misery. Her hands were covering her face so he could no longer see her expression but he had to get rid of any reasoning that made her think she had to be sorry. He leaned forward and put his arms around her, hoping she wouldn’t push him away now but knowing he wouldn’t blame her for it.
“No Claire I’m sorry…this is my fault. I should’ve known better…I could have made us wait til you were older, or been more careful. I’m sorry Claire…” He told her softly. “Its my fault, not yours, don’t apologize” Tears started brimming over in his own eyes. He desperately wanted this child that she was apologizing for. How could he ever convince her that he'd be able to make this work if she'd let him.

After she had been told about the imprinting, and since she realized that she did love Quil, she had never turned away from him or avoided his touch. It had been so easy for her to allow him to lead her anywhere; he always seemed to know what she wanted. She had been afraid of him touching her, sure that it would be the last time he would. She was sure that her pregnancy would anger him and push him away from her life. Neither had planned on it, and now Quil was going to break all his promises to her. Her eyes throbbed as they strained under a new set of fresh tears, and her cold hands offered the tiniest relief from the aching. She soon felt his arms around her, and though her mind panic and reminded her that it would only make it hurt worse, she couldn’t make herself pull away. She buried her head in his shoulder and embraced him as tightly as she could If she was going to endure the pain of him leaving her, she might as well make it worth it.
Claire had tried so hard not to think about what this baby meant, but as she felt her last moments with Quil, it took on an entirely new meaning. Somehow she would survive, because at least she would always have a part of him with her. She stiffened in his arms when he apologized to her, finding it hard to swallow his words. He regretted it. He was sorry he had ever told her about the imprinting, about all those nights together. Her breath became quick and shallow, and she pushed herself away from him, feeling cold when their skin was no longer in contact. She gave him a look of pain and disbelief… betrayal. She shook her head, trying to make sense of it, figure out how it had all gone wrong. “I can’t believe you,” she accused. She felt used and taken advantage of, and now starting to see the meaning behind all those accusations other women always made against men. “Not after all this time. I can’t believe you’re doing this.”

Quil was expecting Claire to be angry with him, to hate him even. He knew that this was his fault. He was the adult. He was twice her age. He should have been able to control himself better and talk her into waiting until they were older. He knew they should have waited until she would have been ready for these consequences. A time when she would have wanted this result as much as he wanted it now. He closed his eyes tightly as she accepted his hug for a moment. He didn’t know how long she’d let him stay close or if this was the last physical contact he’d get. She’d probably never want him to touch her again after what he did to her.
It wasn’t unexpected to Quil when Claire did finally push him back, getting herself out of his arms. He could feel the emptiness as she left and he yearned to lean forward and hold her close, so tight she couldn’t get out, but he’d never do that to her. Especially not now. He saw the look in her eyes. She did hate him and it was killing him inside. “I know…I’m sorry…I should have protected you better, you have every right to hate me.’ He said, trying to keep his emotions controlled, assuming she was upset that he had impregnated her and that was the disgust she was feeling at him now. But then her next sentence confused him. “After all this time? You have to know I didn’t mean to hurt you…to put you through this so soon…I ruined everything”

Claire’s mind was speeding through the last year and a half of her life. Though they had loved each other for as long as Claire could remember, it was only recent that she realized how deep and amazing love could be, and how very rare it was. She had been so blindly happy that she had never even thought of the possibility of something going terribly wrong like this. It was supposed to be something happy and miraculous, but it turned out to completely ruin it all. She was ashamed at herself to think that things would turn out just because she wanted them. She was naïve and now she was paying for it. She barely understood the words that were coming out of his mouth, she was fighting the urge to hit something or fling herself into the ocean. But she couldn’t be as mad at herself as she was at him. “So soon?” she asked, her voice on the verge of a shriek. “ You mean you’ve been planning this the whole time, but now me being pregnant just rearranges your schedule!?”
The last time she had been this upset had been the night Quil had told her about the imprinting. Today, however, there was so much at stake. She was about to lose everything, and he was worried about not making her feel bad about it. How was that even possible? She crossed her arms, and looked at him, devastated but becoming more and more angry. “So this imprinting business… it doesn’t mean anything now? Is that how it works?” She remembered him kneeling in front of her, convincing her that they were soulmates, and she believed him in the end. Now she was paying for being so naïve, and found it unfair that the other imprinted women had been able to keep their wolves. Something had gone terribly wrong. “Everything you said that night… it wasn’t true?”
