Quil looked over at Claire. The distance she had placed between them wasn’t that great, yet it felt like miles. He was too afraid to touch her now, afraid to see that look of rejection again. The look he was already receiving from her hurt enough. He felt like the worst imprinter in history. Maybe the others were right when he first imprinted. It was wrong, and sick. Maybe they knew how he’d end up hurting her in his own selfishness. He looked at her a little shocked as she seemed surprised that he had planned this out. “I mean I didn’t have a specific time planned out, but of course I had thought about it…I always thought this is where we’d end up, I just didn’t think it would be like this…”
Quil looked down ashamed. She was pregnant because of him. He was the one rearranging her entire life. She had grown up so much, but he couldn’t blame her for not being ready to be a mother yet. He was in his 30s, it made more sense for him to be thinking about kids and the future. He needed to be more patient with her getting there. He hadn’t expected that the idea that he had thought about them having kids would have upset her so much. Maybe she never wanted a child at all. Maybe it wasn’t about timing, just the pregnancy as a whole. He was terrified of the thought that she might not even carry the baby to term.
As Claire questioned him about the imprinting his eyes looked at her with confusion, and full of hurt. “Of course it means something…” He told her. “Everything I told you about imprinting was true” His heart fell as he realized what she must have been talking about. Her feelings had changed with the pregnancy. She didn’t want the imprinting anymore. She wanted it to be nothing. “You never have to see me again if that’s what you want” he said, tears spilling over from his eyes. “I won’t be able to fight it if that’s what makes you happy, it’ll be like the imprinting never happened”

Claire let out a grunt of disgust when he told her that he really had been planning it. This couldn’t be happening and she didn’t want to hear any of it anymore. Standing up, she quickly climbed out of the hole and frantically brushed off the sand from her legs and clothes “I can’t believe this,” she said. Her voice was trembling and her clothes couldn’t be clean enough. She looked like she was fighting with a persistent fly buzzing about. “We spent hours that night, figuring this thing out, and now you’re backing out of it!?” She looked at him, shaking out her hair, unable to keep herself still. “How could you do this? This is me we’re talking about. Don’t you remember everything you told me?” Now she was crying openly, and was weakened by allowing herself to walk into this conversation. She could have just walked away and lived with her broken heart without any answers; she didn’t think they would have helped anyway. But now she couldn’t stop herself from accusing him of ruining everything they had meant until now.
His last words somehow got through to her, and she had the feeling that they didn’t quite add up. He was crying now too, and nothing he was saying made sense. “Why would I not want to see you again? That doesn’t even make sense!” She felt a familiar sensation, one that felt like there was something missing in the conversation. “I’m having your baby,” she told him. Her voice had died down to a low murmur, sad and dejected. “I thought you would have been… happy.” It was odd for a 16 year old girl to know exactly what she had wanted from life, but from the moment she knew she loved Quil and that he loved her back, she knew she wanted everything that came along with it. Who cared if it was earlier than they had expected it. She had tried to suppress it, afraid that he didn’t want it like her, but now she looked at him, with a pleading look in her eyes. He wasn’t supposed to leave her like this right when she was about to have everything she wanted.

When Claire stood up, increasing the distance from him. Quil felt as if this was truly over now. She was going to leave him, she hated what he had done to her, and would never be able to forgive him for it. His eyes were filled with longing as he looked up at her, trying to memorize every inch of the face that he’d probably never get to see again. But then she accused him of backing out and he didn’t understand what she meant by it. “Backing out? No that’s not it…I thought…” He said feeling confused. She wanted him to leave didn’t she? That’s why he said he could walk away. He had to do anything that she wanted him to. He wasn’t able to say no to her, even if it meant not being in her life. But he wasn’t backing out. As she started crying openly Quil stood up but didn’t approach her, too afraid of her running away. “I remember everything I told you. I love you Claire, I never wanted to hurt you. But I’m not backing out, I’ll do whatever you want, whatever makes it better.”
Quil got a moment of hope as she said that it didn’t make sense that she wouldn’t want to see him again. What was she going on about then? “I thought you hated me for putting you in this position…” He explained, hearing her say she was having his baby and then softly adding that she thought he’d be happy. He stared at her dumbfounded for a moment. He had been happy. He was only upset when he thought she was seeing this as the worst possible news. “Claire…” He started taking a step forward. “I was happy…this is exactly what I wanted for us. For us to have our own family, raise children together…but I saw how upset you were, how much you didn’t want it and it was tearing me up inside…it was like having everything you’ve ever wanted dangled in front of you only to have it ripped away. It’s what I’ve been dreaming about for us, but I should have realized you’d be scared and not ready, you’re still young and I’m sorry I wasn’t more careful…just please Claire, don’t get rid of it…”

Confusion was slowly taking over and drowning out the anger she had started to feel. She watched Quil get up and repeat everything he had promised her, and telling her that he loved her, which made her heart skip a beat. It sounded exactly the same like the other times when he said them, and she had believed him. But now he was looking as confused as she was, stepping forward. And then he said what she wanted to hear the most, but thought would never hear. She stood still, as if any movement would reverse the words, and searched his face for any trace of dishonesty. As he spoke, she could feel his words paint the picture in her mind; them raising children that had her eyes and his beautiful skin. Was it possible that they had had the same dream? That he really did want this?
She tried to calm down and breathe evenly, and found that the waves crashing on the shore were louder than they had been before. “What? No!” she said, instinctively bringing her hands to her stomach. She had always thought abortion was awful in the first place, and the thought of giving up anything that linked her to Quil was beyond comprehension. “I am scared,” she admitted to him, because it was true. It was wonderful and amazing, but also unexpected and unknown. “But… but this what I wanted.” She wanted him to say it again, just to be sure, and she hoped that they had only crossed wires somewhere. “I mean I didn’t know it would happen so soon but…” Her sentence died out and she could only shrug. It didn’t matter to her, she just wanted Quil to be happy. “Do you really mean it?” she asked, her voice cracking again. “Do you really want it?”

Quil watched Claire as he explained how he felt, wondering if he had said to much and just sealed his fate by admitting how much he did want her to have his child. His heart felt like it had stopped beating in his chest, like it was just waiting for her response before it could go on again. He had asked her not to get rid of the baby. Knowing that both and abortion and even adoption would seem like torture for him. He knew if she didn’t want any part of the child’s life, he’d raise it on his own if she’d let him, just so that he could have a part of her. But he knew that if that happened, he’d most likely be giving up any chance to make things up to her in the future.
He watched her arms move around her stomach as she said no. Not knowing at first if she was outraged by him asking her to keep something that she hated so much. But the way she put her hands to her stomach, it didn’t seem like she was disgusted by what they were touching. He nodded as she admitted she was scared. He thought this was the point where she started yelling at him, or even just walked away, but her next words shocked him completely. He hadn’t expected her to say that she wanted this too. “What?” He couldn’t stop himself from questioning it, wondering if he had just imagined her saying what he wanted to hear. “You…” He said not even able to repeat it for fear he was just hearing things. He nodded as she asked if he really wanted it. “I do Claire…I want this for us so much. I always wanted a family with you….Do you really?”

The day she had found her purpose in life in Quil had been the happiest. Thinking back on her, she felt the edges of her heart swell to contain as much love she could possibly handle to give to him every day. She never imagined that that very feeling could possibly be trumped by another. There was nothing Claire could do to express any of the layers of bliss she felt when she heard him talk like that to her. He wanted to make a family with her, and it made her head echo from her heartrate spiking. All she could do now was willfully let him see her cry, and laugh at the same time, while she crossed the tiny distance between them that had held a cluster of confusion that always seemed to present itself in the important parts of their life, testing them.
"Of course," she said, in the middle of sob/laugh that was only produced when one was crying of happiness and the relief from being saved of something that would break their spirit. It would have broken her into pieces, and they would have barely hold on to each other without him. She took his hand, large and warm though still complementing her small, yet strong ones, and pull him closer to touch his palm to her belly. "How could I not?" She smiled brightly at him through blurry, teared vision, and felt the incredible warmth that rushed all over her body from where they connected.

Quil had poured his heart out to Claire. He had always been as open an honest with her as possible. She knew he loved her, from before she even understood what love meant. She knew that he would always be there for her and would never leave her. And now he confirmed to her that having a baby, and raising a family with her was his dream for the two of them. He was like an open book with her, the one person who he wanted to know him better than all others. Yet he still felt the nervousness until she confirmed what she wanted as well. There was always the chance that the fear she had expressed would overwhelm her and outweigh the joy that he felt and that he hoped she would share.
Quil smiled, tears brimming in his eyes as she said told him of course. It was what he needed to hear as much as he needed his next breath. She didn’t want to run away from him and try to get rid of the evidence of their carelessness. She wanted their baby too. Quil let Claire take his hand and place it against her stomach, where their child was. He could barely believe the sensations going through him. His and Claire’s child was growing inside of her. They had a family. Three of them standing right here.
“Claire” He said, overcome with emotion, as his tears brimmed over from his eyes. “ This is our family…it’s the best gift you could have ever given me. I love you….I know you’re scared, but we’ll get through this, it will be wonderful”

After feeling the burden of misunderstanding wash away and opening up the space between her and Quil, Claire could feel the raw truth between them. She felt it in his voice when he spoke her name. It made her smile, making the last of her tears fall, and she easily slipped into his arms. She exhaled in relief and shook her head without realizing it. She almost couldn't believe that everything she had feared this morning was trivial. But she should have known better, because this was Quil and he always did everything right. Shame on her for suspecting otherwise.
The reassurances he spoke to her made her feel like nothing could harm her. If he was going to be there, there was nothing they couldn't do. The three of them. "I love you," she replied immediately. "I'm not scared," she said, meaning it. "There's nothing to be afraid of."

The misunderstanding had been horrible, but Quil was glad that now the two of them were beyond them and able to focus on what was really important. The love they both had for the unborn child that she was carrying. He could already imagine what it would be like holding the little one in his arms, wondering if it would have his eyes and her nose or would look just like Claire did when he first met her.
He saw her smile before she fell into his arms, he held her close and lovingly, , knowing that holding her was always the best feeling in the world. His smile widened as he heard her say those words, that she loved him too and his heart was lifted. He was glad she wasn't scared and didnt feel they had to be afraid of anything. "You're right, there's not, this is how we're meant to be, its perfect"

The feeling of Quil's embrace was a confirmation that this was exactly how it was supposed to happen, even the frightening misunderstanding that had clouded them with confusion and doubt. In the end, it would all be perfect, just like he said. She was blissfully content as they stood there on the beach with the waves of the Pacific crashing on the shore until, slowly but surely, a little piece of harsh reality crept up on her. Her smiled faltered just a little, and she sighed heavily. There was no way around this, and it was gonna be rough.
She unwillingly lifted her head from Quil's chest and looked up at him, sliding her hands down his arms and placing them around his waist instead. She was only slightly worried, since there was nothing she could be afraid of if he was there with her. But it was definitely something they had to be delicate with. "There is... one slight problem..." she said, wincing slightly. "It's kind of... not-so-easy.

Claire's body felt relaxed as Quil held her in his arms. It was clear to him just from holding her that she didn't hold any great tension over this, or at least that it had been alleviated at least for the moment. Quil felt completely peaceful in this moment; holding his imprintee in his arms, getting ready to start a family, and safe on his tribe's land, that he helped keep safe for his child, or children.
Hearing Claire's sigh broke Quil from his reverie. He angled his head down to look at her as she looked up at him and readjusted her position a little.. "A problem?" he asked her wondering what she was worried about. "It's not easy?" He repeated, assuming she meant the task of raising a child. "Its not...but we're two loving, caring people...we can give this child a great home, and we'll figure out all the little problems along the way"

Could he really not take a guess? It was as if he hadn't been struggling for their approval since she was three years old, and had been trying to ignore glares of warning since they had officially started dating. Now that Claire was pregnant with their grandchild, they just might have twin panic attacks. They had spent so much energy in trying to protect her, yet support her, it was obvious that they had to be the next to know. She owed it to them. Both she and Quil did. Despite the resurfacing anxiety, she could only smile at what Quil had to say about them. He already believed that they'd be great parents, regardless of what came their way. She sighed happily, believing what he did because she already had so much faith in him, but decided that they still needed to address the next issue. "I know we can do it," she said confidently, her eyes looking up at him. "But I'm talking about telling my parents about everything first."
At this, she could only giggle. The prospect was still daunting, but she hadn't the first clue as to how they could even look them in the eye. She could imagine that they could sense that she and Quil had gotten serious, and were very involved, but she didn't know if they would have expected them to already be intimate. As she imagined herself trying to admit something like that to her father, Claire's face flushed with color.

Seeing Claire smile at his words of confidence in their abilities made him reassured that she felt they were able to handle this endeavor as well. He knew that together they'd do it. He was sure old enough to be a father, despite his still teen looks. And though she was young, he knew he'd help her in every way he could. She was mature enough to handle this all. They would make it happen. His smile fell as she mentioned her parents. How he had forgotten about them he didnt know. The joy of the news had distracted him from all outside forces, but he knew they'd likely not react well to this. To them he was still the old man, and she their precious little baby girl. "Oh..." He said looking down a bit.
He looked up as she giggled lightly. "Its not funny!" He said laughing himself. "They're not gonna be happy...they'd kill me if they could" He said knowing it was true, his wolf genes were probably all that would save him physically from Tai and Rayen's wrath. "You know there is something that might make it a little easier on them?" He said slowly looking into her eyes and wondering if this would be too much for her. He had been trying to take things at a slow pace knowing that just because he had been ready for years, she was still discovering it all. "You could do me the honor....of letting me make an honest woman out of you"

Claire saw the realization hit Quil's face when she presented their next task. It was a reaction very similar to her own only a few seconds prior. She was disappointed to see the sparkle in his eye and the smile from his face, seeing that he was so happy about all of this, but she was glad he appreciated the severity of what came next. She remembered having a few conversations with her mother after the imprinting was revealed, where she was urged not to feel pressured. At first, Claire couldn't avoid it. She had been kept in the dark about it, and though it made a lot of things make sense when Quil finally told her, she couldn't help but feel weird about it. As it turned out, things naturally progressed and she just couldn't deny that she and Quil were soulmates. She still wasn't entirely sure what her parent's stance was of her relationship with Quil, but she was pretty sure that they would be completely unprepared for this.
She couldn't resist another giggle because he'd told her not to laugh. "I don't think they'd kill you," she answered honestly, "I think you can still outrun them any day." She was of course right, but she had to give her protective father some credit. Claire looked up at Quil curiously when he asked her his question, ready for a clever remark, but the comment was cut short by the purpose behind his eyes when he looked at her. There was no one in the world that looked at her like that, an luckily for her she was the only one he looked at in such a way. The next words out of his mouth seemed not to hit her right away. Someone else would have shocked immediately after the words were voiced, but their meaning seemed to elude her for a few seconds. The very serious look on his face told her that he meant exactly what she thought he meant, and the meaning itself crept up her body slowly in a mixture of shock and pleasure. Marriage? Was he serious? Rayen and Tai had remained unmarried for some time, even after they had reunited; it hadn't meant that they didn't love each other. She already knew that nothing would separate her from her Quil, it almost seemed as if marriage was an unnecessary formality. As the reality sunk in, and the look on his face convinced her that he was proposing to her right there on the beach, a tiny grin began forming at the corner of her lips. She searched his eyes for a few moments, her hands resting at his chest. "Really?"

The apprehension that Quil was feeling once the topic of her parents came up may have made his smile physicially fade, but the joy he felt at the prospect of having a child with his soulmate was something that would never cease now that he had it. Now as he thought about going with Claire, and the two of them revealing what should be completely happy news to her parents, their child's grandparents, every situation he thought of he could only see disappointment and anger in their faces. He couldn't see them accepting this with Claire still being so young. He wished they could feel his love and happiness and know that this was good for all of them, and was what he and Claire wanted. Marrying her was the only thing he thought might make it a little easier. He had always known he'd propose someday, now it seemed like the right time, to make them officially a family as it was starting to grow.
He gave a light laugh as she suggested he could outrun them anyday. "True, and you can always hop on my back to make sure you're gone before the yelling starts too" He said, only half joking, knowing it may come down to that. As he waited, watching her reaction to his proposal, the biggest question he'd ever had to ask, he wished he had been able to do it in a more romantic way, but he hoped she knew him well enough to know his lack of planning didnt mean lack of love for her. He was scared, wondering how he'd possibly recover from this if she told him no, that she didnt want to or wasn't ready.
As he saw her lips turn up in a small grin he stared into her eyes, feeling her hands against his chest as his heart began racing as she questioned him. He smiled tentatively at her, hoping she had liked the idea he suggested. He nodded carefully. "Yeah, really...if its what you want....Will you marry me Claire Titan?"
