Quil watched Claire tense up hearing the answer. He had held out some hope that finding out that her friends and family had also experienced imprinting would make it less scary for her, but it seemed to have the opposite affect. He wished that he could show her all his thoughts and memories the way that he could his pack brothers when they were phased. She could see how he felt when they first met and it might make her understand more how he could say that things could stay that way, even if it was different from the other imprinted couples.
Quil nodded as Claire repeated Nessie’s name shocked. He nodded when she said how Jake could have been killed. If it had been any other vampire family but the Cullens, he probably would have, but they had developed a relationship that seemed to extend beyond the treaty. “She was still a baby…just like you were practically still a baby when I met you, but when it happened for us, there wasn’t anyone before us that had the big age difference” Quil said, knowing that his experiences had helped the others understand Jake’s imprinting on a baby, it was less of a scandal. The problem with Jake’s imprinting was the half vampire trait, but even that didn’t pose much of a problem, they could both live together forever. “Luckily Jacob and Bella were always good friends, it made it a little easier for them I think”
Quil then heard her ask about her own parents reaction. “Well…your dad wasn’t around yet when it happened” He started. “I can’t know exactly what they were thinking but I know that your mom was really scared at first…but Emily helped her understand…and she started understanding that the way I loved you then was a lot like how she did. We both wanted the best for you, and to keep you safe and loved and happy. She saw that you and I both loved spending time together, and that she could trust you in my care.” He explained, hoping he was saying the right things. “Your dad, when he came back...he didn’t quite understand at first either, and is still pretty protective of you, but both your parents have accepted that we’re family, and that I love you” He told her. “Tai and I became friends enough to even live together for awhile, until he moved in with your mom”

Her heart stuttered to hear that Jacob had been in such danger. He was one of her favorite uncles, and one of Quil's best friends. And now that he thought of it, the imprint was probably the only thing that made sense. As a half vampire, Nessie stood for everything Jake was supposed to protect them against, and Jake was an inherent threat to her. Obviously something stronger than a crush would have been able to unite them. Claire shook her head at herself, embarrassed that she had missed something so obvious in front of her face. But that was exactly what she was here for, to set things right. She just never expected it to be something as big and complicated as this.
She again thought of all the imprinted couple, as new ones started to make themselves known to her in her mind. Her muscles reacted again as the discrepancy tugged at her heart again. "But all of them," she said, looking down, suddenly nervous. "They ended up together." She suddenly felt the blood rush to her cheeks, warming them and leaving her fingers cold. Even though he said nothing was predetermined, it was hard not to see the trend. "Even Jake and Nessie." She wasn't sure how she was supposed to react to all of this, and was started to realize exactly why they had waited so long to tell her. Only her stubborn nature retained a little bit of the resentment that had angered her, and she still had trouble letting them all off the hook.
"What are we supposed to do?" she asked in a small voice. Of course, whatever happened affected them both, whichever way it went. But if anyone could guide her through this oddity it would be Quil. He always seemed to know what she wanted.

Quil could see the obvious concern on Claire’s face as they talked about Jacob. She was such a loving girl towards all of her family, but he hated seeing her worry, especially since they had long ago figured out that Jake would be safe with Nessie and the Cullens. It was their other vampire visitors that still had Quil worried, but he knew Jake could handle himself, and also that he’d call on his pack if he needed them. Quil would be there in an instant, without even needing an alpha order.
Quil looked down nervously as Claire brought up again how all of the imprinted couples ended up together, including Jake and Nessie. He couldn’t argue with that and didn’t want to. He hadn’t been interested in dating since his imprinting, and he knew that there was a part of him that hoped what he had with Claire would become like what the others had. But he also knew he wasn’t disappointed with where things were now. As long as she was happy, that made him happy. “Yeah, they did…” He said softly.
Quil looked back up at her as she asked him what they were supposed to do. He wished he could say run off and get married, but he knew he couldn’t. Her happiness was his only goal, so he had to make sure that whatever happened was what she wanted, and not what she thought had to happen. “We’re supposed to do what makes you happy. I am what you want me to be for you” He told her. “The others did end up together, but if that’s not what you want…” His voice got quiet a moment. “That’s another reason we didn’t tell you before…If we were, or are going to be together…I want it to be because you want us to, because in your heart you want us together, not because you’re supposed to because that’s what happened to the other imprinted couples….Claire, I wont force you to be with me, but at the same time, I’ll stay with you forever or as long as you want me”

Her eyes deepened in worry when he couldn't deny that the other wolves had all stayed with their imprintees. There was consolation that he spoke the truth, but the truth was something that was making her head spin and stripping away other things that were supposed to be true too. Everything he said sounded almost right, but there was something that bothered her and she felt a bit more nervous with each part of her explanation.
She felt a great pressure building up, and wasn't sure if she could withstand it, at least not for too long. Why was everything dependent on her? When she thought about it, she realized it was because it had always been so. As she sat in front of her greatest friend, shivering from the rain, she realized that she had never really asked him. Of course, she had cared for him and worried about him, but now she felt another wave of shame when she kept realizing the depth of her selfishness. She had never considered what he thought of or wanted, it had always been about her. She knew she was right when his sentence was unfinished, lingering on the possibility that she might not want what the others had.
What about what he wanted? Or what he was thinking? Now that this had suddenly become so important, Claire couldn't bring herself to ask him. She was as completely clueless as to the answer as she was afraid that she wouldn't know how to react to it. "What about you?" she asked, her skin deepening again, and only able to glance at his face again. She had never been too bashful, but now she could hardly look at him, while their discussed the foreseeable future as if it were a new trail in the woods. "I mean... what do you... you know." Someone had to know... because she sure didn't. Again, she was too embarrassed to look at him as her mind touched on what he could possibly say.

Quil felt nervous and scared with the way that Claire was looking at him, expecting him to have all the answers. He was feeling the pressure of the situation and for the moment, doubted whether or not he could withstand it. He didn’t want her to see him crack but he wouldn’t put up a façade for her, it wasn’t how their relationship was. It was honest, even if she didn’t see it that way now, and he had never lied to her before, he wouldn’t start now.
“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say…Claire, I’m scared I’m doing the wrong thing…I don’t want to make this harder for you” He told her openly, edging himself closer to where she sat on the couch. He knew Sam would have told him to be confident, but he wasn’t feeling that way, and maybe if he screwed up now she’d forgive him knowing he was nervous about this too.
When Claire finally asked him what he wanted, he was even more confused about what to tell her. He had the feeling that just telling her over and over again that he only wanted what she did would end up making him sound like a robot, programmable to her needs and desires, not someone who actually cared about her and loved her the way he did. “Honestly…I don’t know Claire…” Quil told her looking up into her eyes. “When it first happened when you were a kid, I couldn’t even picture myself in any sort of romantic situation with you, even when I thought of our future, it just wasn’t how I felt…yet at the same time, I haven’t dated anyone since meeting you because no other girl interests me at all, you are my whole world and always have been.” He told her openly. He didn’t want to scare her away but wanted her to understand as best as he could explain it.
“But now that you’re getting older…closer to the age I stopped aging at, I see what a beautiful, smart, funny woman you’ve become, and I know any guy would be lucky to date you, including myself…but that doesn’t mean you should feel pressured to…Its been inborn in me that I’ll be happy so long as you are, so whatever decision makes you happy, I can be as well.” Quil paused wondering if he should stop there, maybe he already said to much or maybe she needed to hear a little more. “But I want you to know that should we get together that way…I will never hurt you, and I’ll never leave you unless you ask me to. But you have the same promise with my friendship, and love” Quil could feel himself shaking, not in the same way he did before phasing, but out of complete nerves knowing he was a wreck. “What I want, is to spend my life with you, in any way you’ll let me”

Keeping her eyes cast down, Claire only looked up again when she saw the slightly movement as he inched forward to her. The part of her that was scared and confused wanted to retract herself the bit he had moved forward, but her natural attachement for him pulled her the opposite way. She ended up staying still, but could almost feel the heat she knew emanated from his smooth, russet skin, warming her and curing the biting cold she'd felt outside in the rain. She had always found comfort when just looking at his face; he was either smiling brightly or looking suspicious as to what she was thinking. But now his own expression almost mirrored hers, though he seemed worried somehow. It unsettled Claire to see him like that, when he was always the one who had been so sure and confident, in turn always giving her confidence.
Her worried face stayed in place as he started talking more, describing the imprinting and her childhood. She wasn't surprised to hear that he hadn't dated anyone; she knew that first hand. For as long as she could remember, Quil had been her very available yet unattainable best friend. She'd heard some women here and there regard him with hidden smiles and giggles, but she never remembered him being interested in anyone. The part that had surprised her was that it was she who had stopped him from it. It sort of made sense, but it reminded her of the pressure she was feeling as it increasingly settled on her shoulders. Despite her confusion and shock, she felt her chest rumble under the thundering beats of her heart when he told her that she was his world. It felt natural and familiar, like her favorite t-shirt.
His next words surprised her as well, but for different reasons. Just a year or so before, Claire had been approached by a boy who had flat out told her that she was pretty and cool. She hadn't felt the same, and had sat through his whole speech feeling entirely uncomfortable and felt bad for him. But when Quil said them, it felt like he had said them to her every single day and that this was today's version. Her memory spanned her life beside him, and she realized that it was because he really had said it every day. Maybe not in so many words, or with his hands shaking like they were, but they were there and she had heard them every day without fail. He had seen it from the very beginning.
She realized then that she, also, had avoided boys in general. She had never singled one out before, always finding something not quite right. It had never bothered her and she had somehow dodged the general void teenaged girls feel when they wanted a boyfriend so bad that it brought them to bouts of depression and loneliness. Claire had never felt it to be so important, and she had never felt alone. Her own hands started shaking as the answer became more apparent to her, though she couldn't quite even grasp his name even in her mind. A few tears escaped her eyes, the only other sign of her spinning mind other than her look of confusion, and she let them fall in the smallest space that existed between them.
Her whole life, she had always felt that he would never leave her; it just seemed like a gross impossibilty. Life without Quil was impossible. Hearing the words from him, binding him to her through his promises gave her a different insight into her reality. It was strange and tied to magical legends and frightening creatures, but it was part of her world. Why would this be so strange when Quil was so familiar? The Quileute legends had imposed so many odd things into their lives, who said that there wasn't space enough for the most important one?
Claire's blurred vision didn't keep Quil's shaking from her sight. The number of times he had gotten upse enough to shake like that before he excused himself into the forest to phase could be counted in one hand, but Claire had a feeling that this shaking was due to the same reason why she was crying silently. She wanted to stop him from shaking, she didn't like to see him upset. She did what she suddenly realized would work better than any words of comfort would, and took his hand in hers tightly. "I don't want you to leave, ever," she told him, her voice thick and shaky, but conveying the only truth she thought she was absolutely postive of. She felt instant relief from the touch, feeling the familiar wave of warmth traveling up her arm, and she exhaled softly before using the other hand to wipe some of the tears away. Of all the things he had said to her, that possibility was the only thing that scared her. She wasn't sure how she was supposed to address everything else, though the picture was becoming clearer. "Please don't leave."

As Quil edged himself closer to her, he watched her movements carefully. He was desperately in need of being closer to her right now, as if she was his sole life source that he just needed to get a grip on in order to hold on when he felt it slipping away. He worried that his movements would only anger her further and cause her to retreat, but she remained still. She didn’t move, but she was also very silent, something unusual for Claire, who usually always had something to talk about, and such a vibrant personality. He felt guilty for making her feel this way. She never would have needed to know about any of this, or even about the wolves if it hadn’t been for him. Maybe she would have been happier that way. But Quil couldn’t imagine his life without Claire. It was hard to even think how he went on before meeting her, getting into fights with guys at school for hitting on their senior girl friends? It all seemed so childish now, and he knew his whole personality had changed the moment he met her. Everything about him was different.
Quil tried to watch her reactions to his words as he explained his own feelings to her, hoping he wasn’t saying too much, and wondering if he should even be sharing his feelings at all. In his mind, it didn’t matter what he felt, only what she did. He didn’t want to influence her based on what he wanted. He wanted her to be as happy as was humanly, or wolfyly possible, no matter what that meant for him. As Quil continued to watch her, he saw her hands begin to shake, mimicking his own, and the tears fall from her eyes down her cheeks. It sent a pain through him, seeing that he had only made her more upset by his words. He had done something wrong, and felt like a horrible imprinter for not knowing what he was doing to make her so upset. He was supposed to be able to make her better, but he felt defective. “I’m sorry…” He said barely above a whisper, wanting to reach out and hold her, or at least wipe away her tears, but terrified of making it worse.
Quil found himself looking down in shock as a moment later her soft hand took ahold of his trembling one. He had expected her to run screaming, based on her reactions and the way she came in, but she was reaching out to him. His mind barely registered her words, wondering if they were a dream. They had to be when he processed that she had told him she didn’t want him to ever leave. It was what he wanted as well, his every desire. The wave of calm rolled through him with her touch and her words. He slowly allowed his other hand to follow hers up to her face, replacing his with where hers had been, wiping the remainder of the tears away with his thumb while he gently rested his hand on the side of her face cupping it gently as he looked into her eyes. “I won’t leave, I promise you” He swallowed knowing he wasn’t supposed to be asking things of her, or putting pressure on her at all, but needing to say something. “Please…don’t leave me either”

Quil may be a fierce wolf of ancient duty, sworn to protect their home, but Claire was probably the only person that could see how gentle he could be. She felt the surprisingly soft texture of his hands on her face, wiping the remaining tears as they escaped from her eyes. He promised to not leave her, and the relief came in a new set of tears that fell gently into his hand. She had never been threatened with the possibility of not being around him, and it had almost panicked her to hear it from him. But his promise was more than enough to keep him there, she knew that she would never know someone more noble.
The force of his eyes on her were almost overwhelming, and Claire looked into them seeing the plea behind them. How could he ever think that? Why would she ever leave the person she loved the most and in so many ways throughout the years... before she had loved him in every way. The notion had been slowly making itself dominant in her mind, and she had been afraid of it, not knowing herself or what she would make of it. But now she couldn't avoid it, and her mind tested the possibilities behind it, carefully reaching for the implications as they suddenly sprung to her mind. Her thoughts were soon crowded with so many things, but she couldn't find one that would result in something she could object to. She found her eyes with his again, and saw herself. She had asked him not to leave, and he asked the same of her. How could she possibly deny him? Especially now when she was on the brink of something so big and frightening and amazing. She felt herself slide off the couch, kneeling in front of Quil who still held her hand. "No," she whispered in protest, looking up to his face. "I could never..." The thought alone tore her insides apart, and she leaned against him, wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest to cry openly.
The warmth she'd felt in her arm when she'd taken his hand was only a summer breeze compared to the sensation she felt now. Her chattering teeth from the cold and her drenched hoodie were forgotten and she was able to just feel what had always been there just for her.

Quil watched as new tears flowed from Claire’s eyes as he promised her that he wouldn’t leave. He wondered if she knew how easy of a promise that was for him to make. It was his instinct and every desire to not leave her. The fact that she wasn’t making him promise to leave her, was a huge relief. He had been told that if the imprintee didn’t want the wolf around, the wolf would go and be happy because it made her happy. But Quil couldn’t imagine ever feeling any sort of happiness again if he was forced apart from Claire. She was the one person who could always bring a smile to his face. She meant everything to him. He knew he’d rather die than stop seeing her.
Quil stared into her eyes after giving her his request. He felt selfish and like a horrible person, wolf and imprinter for asking that of her. He knew it was pressure. He had promised her this would be her choice yet here he was begging her not to leave him. It was horrible and he knew it, yet he couldn’t bring himself to take it back. It was the one desire he had in life.
Quil’s heart started racing as she slid off of the couch, moving closer to him,he was afraid of what this meant. Was she letting him down gently. He heard the no and his heart sank. No, as in she couldn’t promise him not to leave? But then she admitted that she could never either, and he knew she had to feel something he did. He put his arms around her as she hugged his waist, crying into his chest. He held her close against his warm body, gently rubbing her back wanting to comfort her completely, hating to see her cry. “Thank you Claire…” He said in a whisper, kissing the top of her head.

The last few hours of suspicion and panic were already forgotten, and Claire could only register the warmth Quil gave her as she released the tension she'd built up in her tears and silent crying. Her body was still shivering a bit, recovering from her walk in the torrential rain, but she felt better in Quil's arms and sensed the panic and stress leave her entirely while Quil gently rubbing her back. She felt her breath even out and felt the warm pressure from the small kiss he'd given her. It had the same affection she'd always felt, but now she had a new appreciation for it. It made her nervous and excited at the same time, and she found that the blood that had rushed to her face in anger now only flow through her cheeks.
She was a bit anxious, but relieved that it really wasn't anything as terrible as she first had thought, and she now felt ashamed that she had even considered those things. She breathed softly against Quil and tried to stop herself crying. "I'm really sorry," she muttered against his shirt. "On my way here, I was thinking you were a liar and just a terrible person." She felt the familiar pressure against her chest as she tried to control her urge to sob again. "I didn't mean it, I swear."

Holding Claire now, Quil realized just how close he had been to losing her completely. If she hadn’t been willing to stay, and accept what he told her, she may have run out, furious, and not looked back. The thought alone made Quil hug Claire a little tighter as he noticed her breathing becoming a little more regular. He hated himself for being the reason she was so upset today. He knew if it had been any other person who had caused her to cry like this, he would have gone out after them and picked a fight. He was always defensive of her, and knew he wasn’t supposed to be the one to cause her grief.
He then heard her say something that shocked him. She was sorry. In his mind no matter what she had said or done when she same, Claire would never have a reason to apologize to him. There was nothing that she could do wrong. He listened to her explaination of how she thought he was a liar and a terrible person, and found himself still more upset by hearing that she thought she needed to apologize to him for those thoughts. “Claire you have nothing to be sorry for, not ever” He said insistently. “I may not have lied, but you were right that I hadn’t told you everything, and I’m sorry about that…it was never that I didn’t want you to know, it was just that I didn’t know how and when to do it” He told her, still feeling as if he had a lot to make up for himself. “I should have known you’d start to wonder, I should have told you a better way” He said, thinking to the thoughts some of the other wolves had about their experiences telling their imprintees. He had the benefit of having seen how the entire pack had done it before him, but he also had to wait the longest to reveal it himself.

Feeling a warm sensation, Claire heard Quil try to defend and protect her like he always did, even if it was from herself. To some degree, he was right. There wasn’t much he could have done about the timing and the method, but it didn’t make Claire feel better about the doubts she had momentarily entertained about him, even if it had just been a few hours. “No,” she mumbled, her face still wetting his shirt with her tears. She wasn’t going to let him protect her when she didn’t deserve it. He said it himself, she wasn’t a little girl anymore. “I had this whole conversation with Emily, ‘cause I didn’t know what to think anymore, but she ended up not telling me anything. I should have just come and asked you.” She felt her own fault settle in her stomach, tumbling uncomfortably. But she felt she deserved it entirely. She pulled herself away, and sat on the floor, suddenly tired. “I came over here so angry, that I didn’t even realize that I was accusing you of so many things in my head.”
Leaning on the couch, Claire forced herself to look at Quil. It felt like it had been so long since she had last seen him, when it was only less than two days, but he was suddenly so different to her in the most familiar way. But it was a good feeling to know that there was an explanation for some things. She was surprised at herself for not completely trying deny anything he said had told her, but it would have been even more difficult when it just made so much sense. “I shouldn’t have doubted you like that,” she said, blinking slowly while her head stooped slightly. She used the end of her hoodie sleeve to wipe the rest of the moisture from her face, a tiny smirk appearing on her face. “So did I ruin the surprise or something?” she asked, trying to joke around the bit of anxiety that was still at bay.

Quil wondered why she wasn’t just letting him accept the blame for this when he did deserve this. None of this was her fault, or something she needed to feel guilty about. As much as she was trying to defend him, he’d do the same of her. “I understand why you went to your Aunt Emily…you had questions, and since I hadn’t told you yet and wasn’t there at the time..it makes sense, you don’t have to explain that to me” Quil said, not wanting her to feel she needed to justify her actions. “And you did come and ask me, its what brought you here tonight…you were right in what you were saying, but I’m glad you gave me a chance to explain too” He told her honestly.
As Claire leaned back on the couch, Quil scooted over so that he was sitting next to her. They had hung out like this so many times before, just sitting around on the floor, talking for hours. But now she knew everything. She knew why he was always around, and she was still there. “It’s okay…I’m just glad you’re not mad…or at least as mad now…I know it’s a lot to take in, so once its settled more if you need to go for round two of yelling at me go ahead” He told her with a smile, ready to take any abuse he needed to as long as it still ended with him and Claire together.
He laughed lightly as she asked if she had ruined the surprise. “Kinda” he said, with some truth to it. “You have to remember that I’ve had 14 years now to go over different ways I could tell you and when I could do it. I’ve been so close to telling you I don’t even know how many times…but I just never wanted you to think I was only telling you because I expected you to change how you felt, I wanted you to make your own decisions first” He told her truthfully. “I guess I should have realized that you’d know something was different and question it…I always kind of thought when it would happen I’d take you for a walk on the beach and gently explain to you the rest of the legends and tell you about the other imprintees…it was so much easier telling you that I was a wolf when you were a kid, you accepted right away” He said with a light laugh “that’s what most imprintees have trouble accepting of the two”

She let Quil talk without interruption, but she wasn't entirely convinced. She shook her head just a little, refusing to let him take all the blame. "No, I just... Emily wouldn't tell me anything, and it just made it sound like something really bad and I started panicking. I couldn't think of a reason why she wouldn't just tell me until I just decided that you were lying. And that everyone else was lying." Claire let out a sigh, feeling horrible though relieved that she'd let it all out. "You guys are my family. I should have known better."
She watched Quil move to her side to sit on the floor out of the corner of her eye. It was a natural movement and he'd done it countless times before. But now Claire couldn't stop the deep rush of heat that traveled to her face to the new significance of the seating arrangement. Her skin wasn't as deep and rich as Quil's. He was never one to blush, but he could hide it if he ever did. Claire was a number of shades lighter, still rich in color, but easily spotted when embarrassed. She responded to his smile with a tiny one of her own, and she tried to hide her flushed face by bringing her hands to her face, pretending to rub her eyes. "No," she told him giggling a bit. "I was mad before 'cause I was confused and things just weren't adding up. I thought everyone was treating me like some stupid kid again and not telling me stuff. But I think I'm done with the yelling part."
He explained again, telling her that his decision to not tell her yet had been complicated. Now that she sat there with him so close to her, she understood why. She was suddenly highly aware of the two inches that separated them, and her inability to look at him for fear of turning several shades of red. She smiled and shook her head. "I started suspecting like... last year," she told him. "Well not suspecting. But every time we had a birthday or some sort of gathering, I always thought there was something different between you and the other wolves. I couldn't figure it out for a really long time. But I heard someone at the market gossip about you, that you look the same way you did when you were like 17." She rubbed her eyes again, this time from an increasing sense of exhaustion. "I dunno, it just started not adding up at some point."
Normally, Claire would have already rested her head on Quil's shoulder for support, and asked for hot chocolate or popcorn. But at this point she wouldn't even dream of moving an inch in either direction. She laughed dryly, remembering a little bit of the conversation when she was five. "I think I asked if I could be a wolf too?" she asked.

“I’m glad that Emily didn’t tell you, so that I could tell you myself. But I’m sorry it got you panicked…I never wanted to put you through what you must have been feeling today” Quil told her apologetically. If he had any idea that these questions would have come up soon, he would have explained it to her before she even needed to start questioning it. He wasn’t sure if it was too soon to ask her the next question, but he had to try. “Are you still mad I kept it from you so long?”
As Quil moved to sit beside Claire, he watched her carefully to make sure she wasn’t going to start backing away. He didn’t want to look like he was invading her personal space if she was still feeling uneasy around him. He grinned as she told him that she thought she was done with the yelling part. “I’m glad to hear it” he told her. “And just so you know, I’ve never thought of you as a stupid kid. Even when you were a kid, you were always smart, and more of a little person to me than a child.”
Quil’s eyes widened slightly as she mentioned that she started suspecting something was off last year. “Wow, its been that long?” He questioned. Wondering how she was able to hold in her curiosities this long. No wonder she was at the breaking point when she came over. He smiled lightly as she remembered when she asked him if she could be a wolf too. “You did ask me that…and telling you that you couldn’t was one of the hardest things to say. I didn’t want to disappoint you”
