Quil pulled Claire closer to him as he heard her crying. It tore apart his heart and set all his senses on high. It was as if the imprinting had made the distressing sound of her cry the trigger for him to jump into action, no matter what the situation. He gently rubbed her back, hoping to soothe her crying and honestly not knowing how to fix a situation like this. If it was a vampire he knew what to do, but other kids in school? He couldn't exactly tear them apart now could he.
"I'm so sorry Claire, no one has a right to be mean to you" He told her gently. "They're probably just jealous of you....Do you want to talk about it? Have you told the teacher? Or your mommy what they say? I could talk to them if you want me too" He offered knowing this was probably of little comfort to her. He wished he could tell her she never had to go back but she was just a kid, and school was part of that.

Allowing Quil to console her, she cried while he tried to get her to talk to him. Her first reaction was to tell him everything, but she was also afraid what he would say about it. What if it was all true, and he told her so? "I didn't tell mommy," he told him, shaking her head into his shoulder. "Or anyone else." She was afraid someone else would make fun of her too, and then there was no way she could get out of school. At this point, she felt like the only person that could help her was the one hugging her. Her mother would just tell her to tell the teacher and make them stop, but it wouldn't work.
"You can't talk to them," she said quickly, lifting her head and frowning at him. "They're just gonna make fun of me if you do." She couldn't imagine how someone could be even meaner than they already were, but they hurt her feelings, and she figured they were really good at finding other ways of doing it. "If I tell you," she said, lowering her voice, and leaning in so he could hear, "will you still be my friend?" She hoped that he would say yes, and that whatever the girls said wasn't true, and her eyes looked up at Quil hopefully.

Quil could only hope his hug was offering Claire at least a little bit of comfort when she was so upset. He wanted to fix all her problems, but didn’t even know where to start. Quil just nodded as she told him that she didn’t tell her mother or anyone else what happened. He knew he’d never betray her trust and tell anyone else either. Most adults would go straight to the parents, but he needed Claire to always be able to trust him no matter what. If she didn’t want anyone else to know, that was her choice.
“I won’t say anything to anyone if you think it’ll just make it worse, I won’t let that happen to you” Quil assured her after she denied his offer to talk to the kids or her teacher about the problem. Quil could see the sadness in her eyes as she asked him if he’d still be her friend if she told him. It broke his heart that she even felt she needed to worry about anything she did or said causing him to not be her friend anymore. “Claire, I promise you, nothing you can say to me, or do will ever make me not want to be your friend anymore. You can talk to me about anything.”

Claire hadn't met too many people, and she was younger than everyone that was always in her house, but she knew what lying was and that it was done a lot. She had seen mean girls, like the ones that were making fun of her, say things that weren't true to other people. She didn't understand it, and she wasn't sure she wanted to. But when she was listening to Quil reassure her, she couldn't possibly imagine him saying anything he didn't mean. She believed what he said, but still had a bit of anxiety of what the girls had been telling him.
She looked at Quil for a second, and somehow decided that he was really the only person that she could tell. Her brows folded slightly as she sat up straight to look at his face. She wiped a stray tear and felt her shoulder slump. "They told me that you were too old to be my friend," she admitted quietly. "And that I was making it up." Her breathing hitched again, when she felt the injustice of the accusation, and her lip pouted again at the thought of not having Quil as a friend. "Are we not allowed to be friends?" she asked, her voice crumpling a little under the pressure.

Quil was worried about what Claire was going to say to him. If it was something that she felt she needed his reassurance first that he'd still be her friend afterwards if she told him, he knew it was bad. He hated that anyone would say anything to his Claire that would upset her to this point. He couldn't help but wonder if some of his pack brothers feelings towards him after imprinting had affected the way others saw him and Claire, even if they didn't understand the extent of what was going on.
Though he was anxious to hear from her what it was that was bothering her and what the girls had been saying to her, he didn't push her as she hesitated, just looking at him for a moment. It was her choice of whether she'd tell him, he wouldn't force it from her, he was here only to make things easier for her. She sat up straight so she could look at him and he could see her trying to act strong as he gently rubbed her back, listening to what she told him. It broke his heart to hear it.
"They're wrong Claire" Quil said insistently yet soft, not wanting to upset her further. "Look at us, we're friends right?" He said trying to give her a reassuring smile though he was pained by seeing her so upset. "We are allowed to be friends as long as you want me as your friend. I love being your friend" He told her, hating that it was his fault that she was having trouble with the other kids at school. She was such a sweet girl, and she was being picked on just because he hung around her. "Do you think I'm too old to be your friend?" He said, wondering if she'd rather be spending more time with kids her own age than with him.

The first words that left Quil's mouth were an immediate relieve, though not a complete one yet. He said they were wrong and she wanted to believe him. She couldn't imagine all of those mean things being true, because it would mean that she and Quil couldn't play together and he wouldn't be able to take her to the beach. His question made her stop and blink, and she immediately nodded her head yes. Of course they were friends... right? Her own smile appeared in response to his, though it was tentative and still tinged with a line of worry on her brow.
Her smile grew a little bigger when he told her that he loved being her friend, and she felt the familiar sensation of warmth and safety when she was around Quil. She automatically nudged herself closer to Quil, and shook her head slightly to his question. "No," she answered, without much thought. "You're a lot more fun than some people my age."

Quil was still angry at whoever had gotten Claire this upset and made her believe that what the two of them had was wrong. He knew it was just as likely to be the kids parents influence making them act that way. Afterall to them he was just some pervy guy who hung out with a little girl. He knew he'd probably have made the same assumptions , but hated that it all came back to Claire. He didnt mind them thinking badly of him but to tell her this was wrong and that she was lying was horrible. He found himself a bit nervous of hearing her answers, wondering if this was also how she felt. It wasnt normal what they had but he thought it was what she wanted and made her happy. He knew if she thought it was too odd and didnt like it, he'd leave to keep her happy.
It was a relief to see her smile and then tell him that he was more fun than people her age. "Then if I'm fun and you're happy with us being friends, which I am too, then we can be friends. No matter how old either of us are. You know you're more fun than a lot of people my age too" he added with a grin.
