Standing in front of Aro was intimidating to say the least. Richard was well aware of the power this vampire held (as did the two seated on either side of him). Aro alone could decide he was just being troublesome by even showing up and kill him for bothering him. Or he could see Antonia's request as defiant and go after her as well (something that Richard knew would be worse than his own death). Not much could usually scare a vampire, but being in front of Vampire Royalty, with Richard's history with them, terrified him, though he did his best to conceal it.
Richard's eyes raised as Aro repeated his name, as if trying to determine in that moment everything there was to know about Richard. Having Aro's eyes on him made the situation even worse. Richard was grateful that Vampires werent subjected to human bodily reactions to their emotions or he knew he'd probably be shaking right now. Instead he focused on keeping his face stoic under the scrutiny of the Volturi. Hearing Aro confirm that Antonia loved him reassured Richard in a way that he hadn't been a complete fool in coming, that this was something worth fighting for.
Richard blinked a few times trying to think of the right words to say as Aro asked his thoughts on this before he grabbed his hand. The movement shocked Richard and his body tensed even more leaning backwards slightly but knowing the grip Aro had on his hand was too strong to really move away, at least without a fight (which Richard was hoping not to need to give). "I...I never asked her to leave for me... " Richard said softly, not sure what to do at this point, and knowing that Aro was seeing more than he wanted him to.
Richard lowered his eyes, not wanting to make eye contact as Aro spoke of Crina, knowing it had caused his anger towards the Volturi, but also holding some fear still that he would be punished for her actions. He lightly shook his head as Aro asked if she had ever told him it was illegal to make an immortal child. As he listened, it actually did seem to make a lot of sense now why the Volturi wouldn't allow children to be created if they could never mature or be taught how to conceal what they were. Maybe the Volturi were more sensible than he suspected and it wasn't just being power hungry.
The giggling before him caused Richard to look up again shocked. This man in front of him was quite insane wasn't he? One minute he looked like he could kill someone, the next he was giggling in some sort of sick delight as he pondered his decision. Richard then jumped slightly as he heard another voice. Usually his senses would have been attuned enough to have noticed another in the room but he was so focused on Aro, the one holding all the power at the moment, that he failed to notice the woman in the doorway. Though he didnt know her anymore than the others, she seemed a bit gentler and more reasonable, as she spoke up, even on his behalf though she had no reason to. It was something he was extremely grateful for, even if it didnt end up working.
Richard looked between the three, wondering if the woman's words had any effect on them or if he had a chance. Richard got the feeling that he needed to speak on his own behalf as well if he hoped to gain a place here. "If I may..." Richard started, looking around to make sure no one objected to his speaking up.
"It would be foolish of me not to admit my past distaste for the Volturi, but I hope you understand my reasons, as I now understand a bit more of your own for the guard's actions" Richard told them tentatively, glancing over at Antonia for a bit of support before continuing. "I love her. And it was enough to make me try to overcome my feelings to follow her here and try to give this a chance, with your blessing. All I ask is to be allowed to be with Antonia. If becoming one of you, and doing as you ask gains me that, I will gladly do it. As long as I am with her and she is with you, you have my loyalty. I'm not sure I have anything else to offer you."
"I will gladly tell you anything else you wish to know" Richard offered up, not knowing what else the leaders would want to know from him and not sure what else he could agree to with any sense of sincerity.
