[Pre-Twilight, c. mid 1850s, England]
To the human ear, the world seemed utterly silent. It was just after sundown and a young woman from the Bates homestead in Derbyshire was walking through the dirt and gravel main road in town, headed in the direction of her home just a mile away. She knew the way like the back of her hand, in daylight and evening hours. She could do it blindfolded, and she knew everyone in town and from the neighboring homes within a few miles' radius so there was no reason for her to suspect anyone strange to her would be less than savory with her.
She did not know the figure watching her from a distance, however. She did not see the pair of crimson eyes following her every move, every step she took. She did not hear the footsteps this stranger was taking either.
Antonia Adams watched the young woman who could be no more than twenty years of age, no older than the age she would had been frozen at for the last forty years and would remain as such eternally. She did not know the young woman's name, but she knew she was a Bates, a granddaughter of one of her brothers.
This was Antonia's first time back to England since becoming a vampire in December of 1814 and joining the Volturi several years later in the 1820s. The exact year is lost on Antonia since time has not been as relevant to her anymore as it was to humans. Not needing to sleep, days never ended. It was one, neverending day in which the sun and the stars took turns occupying the sky.
But now Antonia had come back to her home country, having taken a bit of a holiday away from Volterra to see how time had passed on her family. Just viewing from a distance of course. She did not trust herself to be any closer for fear their blood would smell too tantalizing to her senses. Feeding off her own biological relations would not be acceptable to her. They were and would always be off limits.
Almost ruefully, she smiled, taking in the profile of the young woman; seeing her as clearly in the dark of evening as she would in the light of day. She could see the family resemblence; the dark hair and curve of the jawline, the same nose...even the same green shade of eyes Antonia's had been in her human life.
A part of her wondered if this was how her daughter's children would've looked like, had her own child survived pneumonia.
Amidst this faded reverie, due to her human memories being nowhere near as sharp and vivid as the ones she'd accumulated in her vampiric existance, Antonia's senses were alerted.
She smelled a sweet, almost intoxicating scent, one she was familiar with and yet unfamiliar with. It was familiar in that she was accustomed to it from being around the Volturi, which of course meant she knew this scent belonged to another vampire. It was unfamiliar in that it was more pleasing to her than others she had encountered before. She could hear footfalls only a vampire could make and immediately Antonia was aware her descendant was in danger.
And the blood from her bloodline would not be spilled.

Richard had been in England for the past 6 months or so, visiting different areas of the country, seeing everything the world had to offer. He had been this way once before, shortly after having been turned into a vampire, but in the time since then the country had already changed so much. The world was changing at a rapid rate and it was one of the things that fascinated Richard to observe.
He had been in the area of this current town for the past few weeks, staying away from the highly populated areas and only going close to the humans when he was ready to feed. It had been over a week since he had last fed and he planned to remedy that tonight. His hunting plans were non-specific and he saw nothing special in them. It was like any other day, find a human, get them alone, and don't arouse suspicion.
The human he had set his sights on now was a young woman, walking alone on a dirt and gravel path away from the direction of the center of town where there could likely be witnesses. He knew this was easily his best target for prey and began trailing behind her, keeping his distance for now, but watching carefully for where she was headed and if anyone was nearby or ready to meet up with her. When he was sure it was clear, he'd make his move. He was close enough that the smell of her only increased his thirst. He didn't plan to wait long to remedy that.

The scent of this other vampire became stronger which could only mean he was getting closer and Antonia knew it would be minutes if not seconds that she would have to intercept.
Not wanting to risk waiting too long, Antonia ran soundlessly in the direction the scent came from, weaving effortlessly through trees and leaping gracefully over the occasional bush or random, large stone.
"Not her," her voice hissed protectively before she reached the impending predator. Less than half a second later she was standing a few yards from the other vampire.
It was a he, with dark hair like hers, the same shade of crimson eyes, he was taller, only slightly lean, a slender nose and so incredibly handsome to her that at first, Antonia's reaction would've been bestill her heart, had she a heartbeat in the first place. Instead, she put on her cool, calm and collected face and struck a defensive stance by crouching slightly before him.
"You may not have her," she spoke again, this time more authoritative. "She is of my blood and I cannot allow you to spill hers."

Richard's pace had quickened and he was about to reveal himself from the shadows to his victim when he heard the female voice hissing from behind him. He turned in the direction in came from to see the female vampire settle a few yards away from him, insisting that he not choose that woman as his next meal. "You have claim to her?" He said, sure he hadn't sensed another vampire on the hunt.
Richard's eyes took in the woman, a stunning beauty, like most of their kind, with eyes that seemed to penetrate into his own with a sense of urgency about them. She was not to be ignored, something he could already tell, though just meeting this woman. His hunger remained, but what had begun to emerge was a curiosity over what the human could have meant to the woman that she'd risk a battle over her.
"Your blood? " Richard responded a bit surprised. She seemed so protective of her, even for family. He wondered if she was a newborn, that her ties to the family were still so strong because she had loved them daily. "In a few years she'll be dead anyway and it won't matter...it won't do you any good to carry such attachments"

"I am not attached," Antonia responded calmly though defensively. "I do not even know her name, only that she is a granddaughter of one of my brothers whom I have not seen in several decades. Is it so wrong to want one's own family to continue on without harm? If the roles were reversed, would you let me attack and feed of your family line...because they will be dead in a few years?" she threw back at him, narrowing her eyes.
In her peripheral she could see her descendant going on her merry way, completely unaware that her death by vampire had been thwarted by a great aunt her family had assumed to have died nearly half a century earlier in America.
Antonia's body swayed almost musically as she sauntered closer to this man, this vampire. "With all the other morsels in this country, why bother debating with me any further? Unless...are you of the tracker variety? Is the hunt just a game and the more of a challenge, the more you want it?" she questioned, practically enunciating each syllable as she spoke with her velvety smooth voice.
She subtly inhaled a breath to take in his scent which was beginning to be pure intoxication to her. But a level head is what she maintained despite these heightened sensations. Why would this vampire despite all she had encountered in her few short decades strike her fancy so suddenly where others hadn't?
Her flushed lips parted, in stark contrast to her pale skin and crimson eyes which were blacker from her own lack of thirst. She knew she too would be in need of feeding soon. "Can we not compromise...?" she trailed off, leaning toward acquiring his name.

"If you're not attached then you wouldn't have cared if I had killed her" Richard stated bluntly, knowing that whether she denied it or not, she had some attachment, or at the very least fondness for the girl, causing her to have a desire to see her live. "If the roles were reversed I wouldn't know my descendents if they walked right by me...and its safer for them that I haven't stalked them in such a way" He said not sure if he would have had control especially in his early years to maintain watch over them from a distance. He may have even been foolish enough to think he could turn them and kill them in the process.
Richard knew that his intended victim was getting further away and he also knew that she really wasn't worth fighting for. He had no specific desire in her over anyone else, she had just been convenient at the moment, off by herself in a discreet area. "I'm not a tracker, and she really means nothing to me"
As he watched her, he knew that he didn't want this to end up with a battle between them. The girl wasn't worth it to him, but the vampire woman in front of him was alluring enough to hold his attention to the point where he didn't want to start counting her among his enemies. He really wasn't used to feeling this attraction to another vampire, they were all beautiful, but with her the pull was deeper than that.
"Richard" He responded as she edged towards getting his name from him, hoping she'd reply with her own. "And I'm open to compromise...what are you offering? " He asked her, knowing he had been ready to leave her as it was, but wondering now what kind of compromise she was going to make.

"Richard," she repeated, letting the sound roll off her tongue rather pleasantly. Her eyes danced just a bit as she studied his face and acquired to what sort of compromise she had in mind. "Well, Richard...there is an entire town readying to turn in for the night. It wouldn't be difficult at all to wander inside any of those homes for a bite to eat," Antonia gestured to the main road they were on, but in the direction of town. "And, we are tremendously fast. Before any possible stragglers on the road could comprehend something had happened, we would be gone. Like two ghosts."
Antonia sensed he'd given up all intent on pursuing her relation and was feeling rather smug about it as she turned her face from him and began to saunter onto the road, her hips sashaying slightly from side to side for good measure. "I am rather hungry myself and I did smell a most delectable group of drunken men around the tavern on the edge of town. I could lure a few out into an alley under the pretenses of a little romp in the dark and then we could share the meal." Throwing him a smirk over her shoulder, she added, "It's never fun to dine alone anyway..."

Richard enjoyed the way that his name sounded coming out of her lips, her voice carrying a very pleasant tone to it. "And you are?" He asked her as she seemed to get accustomed to his name. He listened as she began to think up a compromise for him. Her offer seemed like a bit of a consolation prize, he didn't get the girl, but there were substitute meals not far from here. He knew he didn't need her luring abilities to get his prey, but would let her do the work, since she did in fact owe him one
"Dinner for two is so much more quaint" Richard agreed, following along after her as she began to walk away. "But you better find a good replacement " He told her lightly teasing her, knowing that the girl he just left behind would have tasted good.

He was fishing for her name with his eyes, that she could tell, before he even verbally asked her. But she wasn't giving him that much yet. She ignored the question with a coy smirk and turned, leaping backward onto a large stone sticking halfway out of the ground, soundlessly landing on the hard surface but causing bits of it to crumble down to the grassy ground below. "Oh, it will be so much more the better, I assure you."
Peering at him through her eyebrows as she tipped her head down, she smirked again and then leapt upward, but backflipping onto the ground several of yards away and then spinning and heading into a run all in a matter of seconds. She took off in the direction of town, effortlessly and quietly. She wove passed a few trees and only slowed moments later when town became more impending.
She darted toward the nearest alleyway and slinked back against a wall, sauntering like a lion on the prowl toward the tavern she had noticed before. She could hear the chatter and laughter, the arguments and banter...the sloshing of mulled ciders and lagers in pints...the scuffing of wooden chair legs on the wooden floor. Footsteps walking around, dancing even. She listened for words spoken, heard conversations as clear as standing next to a person, never mind that there was a wall and several feet of distance between her and all those speaking.
"Iris, love, be a dear an' get me another pint, yea?"
"One more, Thomas, an' then it's off with you. Been 'ere several hours, you 'ave. Don't you forget about that lovely wife and children..."
Iris. The barmaid, most likely. Antonia looked through a side window and eyed a robust woman in her early to mid thirties. A pretty sort of thing for a human, or had been in her younger years. A hard life had no doubt ravaged her some over the last decade or so. Judging by her hips, the girth, the way she carried herself, she possibly had children.
Just then a man came stumbling out into the alley and spotted Antonia standing there. He reeked of whiskey, body odor and decay. Perhaps his ungodly horrible teeth that were practically brown if not missing several of them. He was not tantalizing to her palate at all, but when it came down with it, it didn't matter what he smelled like on the outside. It was what was inside that counted.
Antonia smirked. She knew that in the shadow of the alley he couldn't see her shocking eye color or just how pale she was. "Hello, sir...could you do me a great favor and go back inside the tavern, tell Iris to come outside here. It's about her children."
The drunken man seemed oblivious and understanding at the same time. "Oh yeah? Wuss in't fer me?" he slurred.
Antonia gave a small switch of her hip and puffed up her chest. "I will make all your wildest dreams come true," she purred at him. "Just go back inside, tell Iris to come out here alone and don't you come back out here for at least five minutes. Alright?"
After a moment's thought, the drunken made considered the offer before him, and pleased, accepted, heading back inside. Antonia waited for not even a minute when she heard the tavern door out front open, followed by lighter, female footsteps drawing near. Then, Iris, the barmaid rounded the corner of the building into the alley.
"What's this 'bout my children? Are they alright?"
"Come closer," Antonia beckoned. "I'm hard of hearing."
"I asked if my children are alright." Iris took a few steps closer, wary.
It was a few steps enough in that Antonia moved so fast that Iris didn't have enough time to blink before she realized Antonia was behind her. "Your children are fine. They'll be motherless before the night ends, but they'll be fine."
With that, Antonia encircled her arms around Iris' thick middle and threw the woman over her shoulder like she were as light as a pillow full of feathers. Iris began to kick and shout but the shouts were muffled by the sounds permeating from the tavern and from how fast Antonia ran with her. She headed straight into the wooded area directly behind the tavern and found her way back to a clearing of road where she'd left Richard and as soon as she had stopped running, she literally tossed poor Iris to him.
"Here," she muttered. "This one if certainly more delectable, don't you think? And more to go around..."
Antonia took a few steps closer to Richard then and moved around him, practically brushing her lips to his ear as she spoke, "And my name is Antonia."

She ignored his question before heading off in search of their replacement meal. Richard didn't like being ignored, or letting others have the power of the situation with him, but he also was the type of man to enjoy the company of a beautiful woman. There were tradeoffs to that he supposed, one of which was playing her game and waiting for her to be ready to give her name. It was much like waiting for a cat to allow you to pet it.
Richard kept the female vampire in his sights as long as he could before she disappeared into the thick of the town. He knew that should she be tricking him and not planning to return as promised, that he could easily go back after her family member to spite her. But for now he trusted her, marginally. Enough to wait in the bit of clearing of woods until she came back. Richard closed his eyes for a moment and breathed in deeply, taking in the scent of her that remained in the air around him. It was quite sweet and appealing. He knew he wanted her to return, not just for what she might bring with her, but because something about her had caught his interest.
Richard opened his eyes as he heard movement, yards ahead before the female vampire and the barmaid even came into view. He smiled at the realization she had come back and caught the human woman that was tossed his way. He held onto the woman by the arms and dipped his head down to inhale the scent of her at the nape of her neck before looking back up at the vampire. "Not bad at all...and plenty to share" He told her, feeling her breath on his ear as she spoke her name. "Antonia...beautiful name"

Antonia stood beside him, her needless breath upon his ear. She parted her lips more, bared her teeth and touched her tongue to said teeth only briefly, as if she wanted to bite down on him rather than the plump human in his grasps now.
"Yes, I am rather fond of my name, myself. Antonia means 'priceless,' 'praiseworthy' and 'beautiful.' Do you agree?" She asked with temptation and charm thick in her voice as he lips all but brushed against his ear. She pulled her face further apart from the side of his and dropped her fingers upon his right arm, dancing them downward to reach around the grab the upper right arm of Iris.
"I do not mind sharing, but I insist you have the first bite. I did thwart your first intended meal, after all. This is me making up for that."
