{....mid New Moon....}
Wyatt always heard that you can never go back, but he never understood what they meant or how. Of course you could go back to a place, restaurant, or mood, basically anywhere. He always believed it was a physical matter of geography. He knew there were things you shouldn’t go back to, just as there were things couldn’t get back and he believed these were one of amazing experiences or bad history that shouldn’t be repeated.
It was fair to say that Wyatt had no clue how you couldn’t go back to something until he went back home. Home, it was something you couldn’t go back to because it wasn’t there anymore. Sure the house you grew up, your family and in his case the same bedroom he’d slept in his whole childhood. What wasn’t there was what he saw, because he saw it in a whole different view that was what he realized as he rose shorty after dawn and headed out to see what he’d come back too.
Leaving all those years ago he’d left an angry, misdirected youth with nothing in front of him and a whole world of mess behind him. Now he was home, or a new version of his old him. Now he was a man who had grown found direction and, in not just his own eyes and mind, made something of himself.
Heading out of the house he explored the rez of his childhood before it woke up. He caught a few faces he thought he maybe recognized, guys his age and younger, clearly coming home from a party or sneaking back from a girlfriends, His mind wandered over what he’d be doing if he’d have come back after his time in juvenile hall and he realized his life would never have started and therefore there were no thoughts attached to it.
Off the headland, by the cliffs he’d remembered were the locations of dares and rights of passage Wyatt snapped of a few pictures changing the roll before he moved on. He preferred the feel of film over digital, using the latter generally only for test shots of keep sakes. His childhood home deserved the feel and respect actual film commanded. Using the natural light of the slowly waking sun Wyatt moved the camera across the beach and close land snapping at random til something caught his eye.
The beach was empty, deserted and wild just as he remembered it. The nature of the current and storms of the weather littered the beach with drift wood and the kids of the rez and local town checkered it with burnt out fires. His lens flicked over the beach with a regular click and drag of the focus and shutter.
He didn’t know where she came from, he never saw her arrive or appear, but she caught his eye. Pulling the camera from his eye for a moment he looked at her without the lens; beautiful. The had a quiet beauty that screamed to be captured, but yet even as he snapped the pictures Wyatt knew he could snap her all morning, even longer, and never capture and do justice to her unique beauty. The wind whipped his hair across his face and across the camera just as she turned and the rising sun lit her features. “Damn.” He cursed pushing his hair back.
He had to get that shot, even though it would pale in comparison to her he had to see it develop. There was something about this girl that peaked his interest despite his subjects usually been landscapes or sunscapes, going with the feeling Wyatt attributed his change in muse to his change in location and followed his inspiration to talk to the girl. If he could just get her to turn her head that way again before the light changed too much. “Excuse me.” He called out as he made his way towards her over the drift would and stones that passed for First Beach.

Katherine sat in the passenger side seat of her mothers car. Her father was off at work for the day and her mother was taking her to the beach. They had gotten up extra early that morning so they could get to LaPush before it got crowded, the only time that Katherine could actually enjoy the beach. Katherine had worked it into her schedule that she made up for the day, planning out a few hours to spend down there, always having everything planned out ahead of time.
Katherine could feel the changes in the road as they crossed over from the paved streets of Forks to the dirt roads on the reservation. She stared out the window as they got closer. It was one of the places outside of the house that Katherine actually looked forward to going. And now that she was a bit older, her mother would even let her have some time alone.
The car slowed to a stop as they reached the beach. "Do you want to stay by the water while I get the gas?" Her mother asked her, always filling up the tank to save on money by buying gas from the reservation. Her mother was still a bit nervous about leaving her alone, but knew the area was safe and Katherine had a phone with her at all times if she needed her. And as much as she wanted to protect her and shelter her, she knew that her daughter was an adult and some independence was good for her.
Katherine didnt look over at her mother but nodded. "I like the beach in the morning" She said softly. She loved being on the reservation. She liked Forks better than Seattle, it was less busy and had less lights, but LaPush was even calmer to her and had less street lights and red stop signs. When she was younger she used to ask her parents if they could live on the reservation.
Her mother smiled over at her daughter watching her undo the seatbelt. "I'll bring you some tea from that diner near here too okay?" She said only to get a nod this time from her quiet daughter. "I'll be right across the street if you need me" She reinforced as her daughter got out of the car.
Now on her own, Katherine walked towards the sand. She stared out into the ocean letting herself get lost by the sound of the waves in the morning and fresh breeze. She had found a larger stone a short distance from where the water met up with the sand and sat down on it, just gazing out into the water.
She jumped a little, startled as she heard a male's voice addressing her on the beach. She had thought it was empty as it usually was when they came early in the day. She lowered her head instinctually not making eyecontact with the man who was walking towards her. "You haven't done anything to be excused for" She said softly as much to herself as in response to him.

He had no idea where she’d come from, but suddenly she was there and suddenly she was all he wanted to take pictures of. The way the early morning light lit her hair and shaded her face fascinated Wyatt as he watched her, even before the lights and darks he saw how beautiful she was. As he moved closer to her and spoke he saw that she clearly wasn’t from the Rez. Her skin was pale and delicate like fine china, a trait not found of the Rez, he knew she must be a tourist or a town girl.
As he spoke and she dropped her head Wyatt hoped he hadn’t embarrassed or scared her. When he was focused on a subject he could be gruff and he hoped he hadn’t come across as such to her. Then she spoke, he voice seemed timid and soft, Wyatt almost missed the words as if they weren’t directed at him.
Stopping a few feet from her he laughed. “I meant excuse me, to get your attention you know?” he smiled letting his accent and mannerisms slip back into the reservation easiness instead of the uptight persona he felt more in New York. “I saw you from the dunes and wanted to take your picture. The way the light hits you, you look amazing.” He said staring at her now even his her face dropped from him.

Katherine hadnt been expecting anyone else to be on the beach at this time of the day. But more than that she certainly wasn't expecting anyone to come over and talk to her. She felt nervous and unsure of how she was supposed to act right now. She couldnt remember what her social skills class had taught her about strange men coming over and asking to take pictures of you.
She kept her face down as he explained his meaning of the phrase excuse me that he had used. She did understand that the phrase was sometimes an attention getter, and it now seemed that this was his intended meaning, though not the most common. She didnt reply to him but just stared down at the rocks and sand while he spoke.
She had never experienced someone she didnt know coming over to ask to take her picture before and didn't know why he thought she looked amazing. She had certainly never seen herself that way and was sure that after a few moments of talking to her he'd see that she was far from amazing. With the thought of pictures on her mind she had the image in her head of flashes going off. Her parents would never use them on their cameras but when she's seen people on vacation they were bright and sudden and it was painful to her. "No...no flashes" She said shaking her head as she put her arms around herself.

Wyatt let his eyes follow her profile as she looked down and away from him. Her features were startling, even in profile the shadows cast by the early morning light were perfect. He knew happily he could snap a whole roll and then some if she would only agree to have her picture taken by him.
He hadn’t seen the honestly in her words when she spoke, he though she was been sarcastic seeing it as a normal trait in most women back in New York. Explaining his words had just been more of an excuse to talk to her, maybe if she saw he was a nice guy she’d let him take the picture.
Wyatt’s first clue to anything about this girl was the reaction to his words. He watched her start to shake and hold herself and instantly he wanted to reach out to her and take back his words. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” He stammered a little as he dropped down into a crouch on the beach that was more rock then sand. “I don’t need to use flash, the light here is perfect. The shadows on your face as amazing.” He said gently still looking at her and wondering what was wrong with such a beautiful girl.

Katherine moved her head in his direction but it was still looking down, avoiding eye contact but taking in the fact that he was now crouching instead of standing beside her. She stopped shaking her head as he apologized for scaring her and told her about how he didnt need to use a flash. She was used to people, strangers at least using flashes, so assumed he'd be amongst them.
"Oh" She said softly as she lowered her arms slowly that had been wrapped around her. She was quiet again for a moment as she thought about why he hadnt just left when she started to react badly to the idea of the flashes. Most people would have. She then remembered he had mentioned about wanting to take the picture.
"I guess with no flash its okay" She said slowly, still feeling nervous around this new person. "But why do you want to take my picture" She said staring down at the rocks beneath his feet. "People usually take pictures of friends or loved ones, do you not have any?" She asked him, not in an insulting tone but mentally trying to figure out this social interaction.

When she lowered her arms that had been wrapped around her Wyatt couldn’t help but notice the amazing body she had to go with her beautiful face. He didn’t stare, that wasn’t his way, but he was a guy and noticed. When she spoke, or barely spoke, he looked back to her face. “I promise, no flash what so ever.” He smiled hoping she might look up at him and he could see her face again close up to see how the shadows were playing now.
“Yea I guess people do take pictures of family, but I’m a photographer so I take pictures of all beautiful things.” He said proudly. Wyatt had always enjoyed his job and enjoyed telling others it was his vocation. “I want to take your picture because the way the shadows danced on your face was amazing. I want to see if I can catch it.” He told her honestly.
Realizing she may be uncomfortable her stuck out his hand. “I’m Wyatt, Wyatt Brakken. I live up on the rez, or I do now.” He added realizing it didn’t seem so bad admitting it not like it had when he was a kid.

Katherine's body began to relax as he confirmed again that there wouldn't be any flash at all. She nodded accepting this and giving her silent permission for him to continue with the activity so long as it didnt involve bright sudden flashes of light.
Once he had explained to her that he was a photographer it made sense that he would take pictures of more than just family or friends. The way he described the light was very interesting to her as she knew that light and shadows didnt actually dance and there was certainly no way to catch it. "Good luck" She said softly thinking his task impossible.
Her eyes moved up from the ground and his feet to his outstretched hand as he introduced himself. She had learned socially acceptable behavior was to shake hands with someone when you met them, but she didnt like to be touched and only allowed her parents to touch her in small short amounts. She tensed again slightly but kept herself from backing up from him again. "I'm not good with physical contact" She explained to him, having learned it was rude to just ignore a gesture like that and better to explain it. " I like the name Wyatt" She said thinking it sounded pretty and had a good sound to it, a very pleasing word. "My name is Katherine Morgan, I live in Forks...but I like your reservation better"

It seemed like such a genuine reply, but still Wyatt smiled it had been so long since he’d been wished luck with his pictures that he liked to rush of confidence it gave. This girl was amazing, so literal, but he wondered if she was been sarcastic to him making fun even. Though he response to the idea of flash told him she was probably a unique case, whatever the uniqueness of her case he was marginally intrigued. “Thanks, but I think its more of a time then luck thing.” he said bringing the camera up to look through the view finder. The first glance told him he’d been right, his only wish was that he had a black and white film to shoot with too.
Not good with contact, instantly Wyatt’s mind buzzed for reasons coming up blank except for more questions. She was certainly moving from a marginal interest to a curiosity. Pulling his hand back he smiled and shrugged, “Don’t blame you. Can’t always be too sure when some people’s hands have been.” he laughed and smiled. “Thanks, I like the name Katherine.” He said genuinely.
Pulling the camera back to his eye he snapped a few quick shots before looking back at her minus the camera. “Oh its not my rez, I’m just back for a while. I moved away, but home seems to pull me back.” He said looking up and down the beach remember how homely it felt. Maybe it was his Rez, all the native’s rez. “See no flashes.” He smiled and winked as he pulled the camera back to his eye.

Katherine had grown used to getting harsh remarks whenever she explained any aspect of her disorder. She had dealt with the cruelty of teenagers in highschool and had learned to ignore it for the most part. She had prepared herself for a comment from him about her being a freak or a weirdo for not wanting to even do something as simple as shaking hands. He didnt know her, yet he didnt insult her either, something that surprised her, but tried to identify with her.
"Thank you " She replied as he said that he liked her name as well. She could hear the click of the camera as he took a few pictures. She just sat there like before, knowing she certainly wasn't a model so wouldnt know how to act in pictures. She figured if he was after the light it wouldnt matter how she looked.
"Just back for now? Where are you going?" She asked him, not s why anyone would want to leave LaPush. It seemed so peaceful to her. Like the perfect Utopia. He told her that there were no flashes and she looked up briefly at him and smiled appreciatively, her eyes studying his strong jaw line and long hair. He was very handsome, she could tell that much. "I appreciate you keeping your word...not everyone does"

Listening to her explain a quirk about her Wyatt smiled, it was refreshing to hear someone so honest and unabashed about themselves. His smile was gentle and excepting, something he tried to practice in everyday life and especially share with her now. Wyatt was perfectly accept of quirks and differences in people, if people didn’t take each other warts and all he knew he’d have never gotten have the chances and breaks he’d been given in the past.
“You’re welcome, Katherine.” He smiled looking at her through the lens of the camera as he snapped off a few shots quickly in succession. She really did look remarkable in the light, the way it danced on her features and deepened the shadows of her cheeks and lips. He noticed that the light didn’t dim her eyes at all, they shone as if the sun was dimmed in comparison. Wyatt knew he was been romantically fantastical but he was partial to losing himself in his sceneries and the lights effect upon her, he found it now to be no different with a portrait.
Pausing in mid snap Wyatt wondered, where was he going? “You know, I don’t know. I hadn’t made any real plans short of coming back for a while. Now I’m here, I guess I’ll take a breath and see what happens.” He said casually with a shrug as he clicked the shutter once more and let nothing but the images drift through his mind. “Wow do I know that one. Words are easily spoken and forgotten. I try to keep mine, so you can reply on that we me.” He smiled and pulled the camera from his face. “Do you come to the beach a lot? And always so early?” He asked intrigued if she was always here at this time or if this was completely random.

Katherine gave a light and semi-nervous smile as Wyatt told her the simple you're welcome before continuing to take the pictures. It was an odd situation for her. She had practiced many social situations in her skills classes but being on a beach with a photographer was new to her. She wanted to act normal, to know what she should be doing and not make a fool of herself. Despite her oddness, he still remained calm and didnt seem bothered by her differences.
Katherine still avoided eye contact as she raised her head slightly when he began speaking of his plans. She wasn't sure how people just showed up someplace without knowing where they were going next. Planning her day and making out a schedule were integral for her functioning. "Maybe if you can't think of anywhere you'd rather be then you're supposed to stay here awhile" She said, thinking his lack of plans meant he should stay.
It felt nice to her that he seemed to understand her, that people didnt always keep their words. He didnt try to make her think that the world was all good, when she'd seen the bad in people too. "I always keep mine too, I can't lie" She said not sure she'd even know how, her brain didnt really work that way. She nodded as he asked about her coming to the beach. "We come frequently, but only early...I dont like it when its crowded, it gets too noisy. Early in the morning its peaceful here"

Her smile made her face brighten even further and Wyatt found himself smiling back. He knew there was something different about her, but he certainly wasn’t about to hold is against her.
Her words made sense to him, one of the first things that had since he’s started back to La Push. “You know that makes a lot of sense, I never looked at it like that.” Wyatt shrugged thinking there wasn’t anywhere else he’d rather be at that moment in his life, La Push was his home and it felt right been back. “Maybe I’ll hang around and see what happens been home.” He said clicking a few more snaps of her.
If was unusual to hear of someone who couldn’t lie and he wondered if it was something else to do with her uniqueness. If she couldn’t lie he wondered what other things were different about her. Wyatt didn’t speak, he just smiled and nodded not sure what to say to someone after that revelation.
Wyatt wondered who the ‘we’ she spoke of when he realized she was alone on the beach at the moment. “Yea its not the nicest place when its all crowded, especially in summer when the tourists head here.” He scowled remembering the beach been over run frequently when he was a kid. “Its very peaceful and beautiful here. I spend a lot of time here now and when I was a kid.”

"I tend to see things in ways other people don't, my brain doesnt work the same way" Katherine told him. She never hid her disorder from people. She was too open and honest of a person to even think of trying to hide an aspect of herself from people, even if it did frequently cause ridicule.
She nodded as she said how he'd hang around and see what happened. "If you still think of it as home, maybe thats your answer too" She liked the idea of him staying in the area. Of knowing someone on the reservation who appeared to be nice and kept his word about things. She didnt want him to leave. She often didnt like things to change once she'd gotten used to them, and she thought it would be alright to get used to him.
"You don't like crowds either?" She said surprised, knowing most young people seemed to l like groups and big parties, it was something they were drawn to, but she hid from. She wondered if he considered her a tourist, since this wasn't her home and she was just visiting. "It is peaceful and beautiful...I like spending time here"

Once she explained herself and her mind Wyatt nodding, not sure what she was explaining except a uniqueness about herself. Unique was always a good thing, Copies were to frequent. “That’s ok, nothing wrong with not working the same way as other people. If everyone was the same we’d be a very boring world.” he smiled at her. “I see things different too, its all part of been an photographer. When I looked at the beach I didn’t see a litter filled mess, I saw a haven and the light dancing just for you.” he smiled again snapping pix as the sun continued to rise. Every minute was different.
Home, it felt too alien to call it home, but to familiar to find another name for it. “You know, you might be on to something. Maybe I should hire you are my life guru. You make more sense then the self help books I’ve seen.” he smiled wondering if she’d think he’d read them and worry he was more of mess then the cool persona he gave off. After meeting her and the invigoration and inspiration he got taking her pictures he wasn’t sure he was ready to head back to New York yet.
“I don’t like crowds in certain places, though they have their place like everything in the world. Here should always be like this, it adds to the wildness of the place.” he commented as he glanced up and down the beach remember how it was in the summer full of tourists and outsiders.
“I like it here too, but its only recently I’ve seen it’s beauty.” He smiled to her noticing the beauty in the beach and in her, not just with the morning light but her own beauty.”
