{Early Breaking Dawn}
Sally glanced anxiously down at her little four-year-old half-brother as she watched him jump out of the car. He seemed to be going through a phase of running off with no warning, or ‘adventuring’ as he called it. It wasn’t doing anything for her nerves, which were never far from breaking point, but she was going away soon and she wanted to spend as much time with him as possible before she did.
A few minutes later saw the two of them stepping on to First Beach, which was when Kevin’s struggles against Sally’s hand exploded. He squirmed out of her grasp and catapulted himself down to the edge of the water. With a small cry, which was duly ignored by her brother, she let the boy go and followed at a slower pace.
“This isn’t what I had in mind,” she murmured quietly to herself. She had brought him here to have a day out with him herself, but Kevin had just run straight up to another boy that looked to be his own age. Oh well, so long as he was having a good time, she supposed. Nevertheless, she kept both of her anxious brown eyes on the boys, ignorant of anyone around her, but ready to come to her brother’s rescue if he should need it. She really hadn’t learnt to leave boys of Kevin’s age be, yet, it wasn’t in her nature, especially when she was alone with him.

Nash had brought Travis out to the beach that day, having the day off from both work and patrolling (his newest form of work). He was dressed in board shorts and a tshirt but remained barefoot to feel the sand between his toes. Much to his son's dismay he made Travis wear sneakers, at least until they got to the sandy areas, too worried that his son would step on a rock or something could cut his foot. Nash was much more concerned over the well being of his son than he was for himself. It seemed lately he was stronger than he ever gave himself credit for.
Travis had found a spot on the sand where he plopped himself down and quickly removed his sneakers tossing them aside while his father stood and watched. The boy then reached into the sand and started piling it up into a little mound.
Before he got too far into his makeshift sand castle, Nash and Travis saw another little boy about the same age as Travis run over. Travis jumped up to his feet excited to see someone else his own age. "Hi! You wanna play?"
Nash looked over in the direction that the small boy had been running in and saw a young woman following after her. He gave her an understanding smile knowing how kids often didnt do what you had planned for them. "Hi, I'm Nash" He introduced himself. "It seems he's already met my son Travis" He said not making any assumptions of whether the boy was this girls son, or brother, or just someone she was babysitting for the day.

Kevin skidded to a stop in front of the other boy of his age on the beach, almost quivering with excitement. The size and complication of his family was normal to the small boy, but it did mean that everyone was always doing something, always busy; he hardly ever got to play at the beach and he was super excited to see someone else his own age here. He grinned at the other boy, laughing a little as his skid made his feet sink deep into the sand and nodded eagerly.
“Okay!” he announced, not even looking back at his slow half-sister and he barely even registered that Nash was there, despite his large stature. “What’d you wanna play?” He didn’t even think to ask the other boy’s name, he just wanted to have some fun.
Sally followed at a bit of a distance, though she jogged slightly to catch up when she saw that Kevin was busy talking to another small boy and she knew that he was probably ignoring the grown up presence – he usually did. She looked up at the tall Quileute man, her face paling a little as a familiar fear of meeting new people crept up on her. Still, she smiled at him, timidly and drew to a stop by the trio.
“I’m Sally,” she responded, slightly surprised when he announced that Travis was his son, but nonjudgmental. She had thought that he was around her own age, maybe a bit older, but he was so big – maybe he was in his mid-twenties and just had a baby face. She glanced down at the boys and bit her lip. “And he probably hasn’t introduced himself. This is Kevin, my brother.”
At hearing his name, Kevin broke off from play and turned his head up to the grown ups for the first time. “Kev,” he announced, having recently taken to the nickname. “And half brother.” He didn’t say it meanly, nor did Sally take it as such, knowing that his parents had just begun to tell him about the complicated family that he belonged to.
“I’m sorry if he’s keeping you from doing anything,” she added. “It’s been a while since he’s been down here.”

Like Kevin, it didnt matter to Travis the other boy's name. Introductions weren't first on the children's mind of proper things to do. Travis was just happy to see someone else on the beach his size (though he did love playing with his father too). Travis didn't know the boy from the daycare center on the reservation, but felt comfortable enough with his father nearby to play with the stranger without worry.
"Hmm" He thought as the boy asked what he wanted to play. "I was just making a fort in the sand, but we can play somethin' else if ya want. You like tag?"
Nash watched as his son eagerly made friends with the new boy, happy that he wasn't running away or just keeping to himself. Nash knew it was good for the boy to make friends, and some of parents on the rez didnt like their kids to hang out with Travis, the son of the single father. Maybe they were just waiting for his son to grow up the same way, and thought they could stop the influence from spreading early by keeping their kids away now.
"It's nice to meet you both" Nash replied as Sally introduced herself and her brother Kevin. He smiled at the boy corrected her with both his nickname and their relation. He thought it was smart of the boy to already even know what a half sibling was.
Nash shook his head as Sally apologized if the boy was keeping them. "No not at all. Travis and I were just out enjoying the beach. You're welcome to join us, but if you had other plans I can try to get him to stop distracting Kevin"

At the suggestion of making a fort Kevin’s eyes lit up, though when his new playmate suggested they played tag instead he suddenly had a difficult decision to make. Making forts was always fun and other than with cushions, he never got to make them usually, whereas tag he could play in the cold, rainy playgrounds of his hometown… then again tag was always fun, and it might be even more fun on the sand, with the sea at arm’s distance. He looked at the other boy seriously after correcting Sally of his name and his relation to her. “I think we should play tag now… but there should be a special rule for when we’re in the water… but I can’t think of one, can you?” He definitely knew that being in the sea should mean something, but he couldn’t for the life of him make up what.
Sally, meanwhile, tried to consciously put more colour into her face, embarrassed because she knew that she’d paled to a papery colour, but unable to help it. It had always been her nature to become so shy of anyone or anything knew that she looked ill at the thought. It was particularly unfortunate at such times as starting high school or talking to the guy she fancied. Nevertheless, despite her odd appearance, she smiled up at the tall Quileute, happy that he was at least polite enough to tell her that it was nice to meet them.
“Well, we’d love to join you,” she began, paling a little as she wondered if she sounded like she was being too forward, though there was no flirtation meant at all. “Uh, I mean that… well… Kev doesn’t tend to meet other kids his own age,” and then she looked inwards and wondered whether he would be offended, seen as it sounded like she didn’t like the sound or look of him at all. “And it’s always good to meet someone knew… There’s no need to disturb them…”
She bowed her head, mortified by the mess she had made of meeting someone new, even though it happened every time she did so. She was usually happy to be on her own, a loner, unnoticed by her schoolmates and anyone else, but there were certain occasions when she wished she was a little more socially ept. “Sorry,” she said, quietly, so that the boys wouldn’t hear. “I’m not very good at this.” She flicked her hand swiftly between the two of them, biting her lip.
