[Continued from Forks High School. Mid-Breaking Dawn. Tag Caleb, Jayden, Laurence and Carlisle)
The ten minutes that it took for the car to leave the school and reach the hospital seemed like a few hours in Katie's mind. Her hand throbbed intensely and the pain was unlike anything she had ever experienced. She had, had her fair share of injuries as a child while horseback riding in Alberta, but never before had she broken anything. And it was clear her hand was shattered. She didn't dare touch it, knowing that the slightest bit of pressure would send jolts of sharp pain up her arm. The only thing she did was compare it to her good hand, and winced at the size difference. If she had a sense of humour at that time, she would have seen the similarity to Hellboy.
The entire car ride there Katie kept her eyes fixed on the window. Never concentrating on anything or focusing on what was whipping by outside, but just staring blankly as a million thoughts ran through her mind at the same time. People had always talked about getting your heart broken and how awful the feeling was. She used to roll her eyes and shake her head, declaring that it would never happen to her. She wouldn't let any man get that close, that intimate, to just turn around and stab her in the back when he was finished. But here she was now, the hypocrite, sitting in the backseat of her semi-ex-whatever's mustang with his other fling in the seat in front of her. How pathetic.
Katie ignored everything around her for those excruciating ten minutes. If anyone had spoken, she wouldn't have known. It was the same effect of being so exhausted that you simply couldn't concentrate on what someone was saying or doing. In one ear and out the other; nothing sunk in. The only think that snapped her out of her daydream was the large sign proclaiming Forks District Memorial Hospital.
When the car finally came to a halt in the parking lot, she unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door with her good hand. She stepped out quickly and didn't wait for anyone before walking quickly into the hospital. If her hand wasn't hurting so much, she would have run. Katie went straight for the admission desk and simply explained to the bored nurse that she thought her hand was broken. No need for specifics. The faster she could get out of there the better.

The shift was still quite new to Carlisle, having just started at eight that morning. So far there hadn’t been much of note going through the sleepy town’s emergency department, it could be summed up with a man with a bad hangover and a woman worried about her child’s cold. Sometimes it irked Carlisle when people took advantage of the health system with menial complaints, but when it was quiet he didn’t mind so much – he understood that sometimes people just needed reassured. Even if they were heaving with people he would never turn anyone away.
That day was to be spent continuing his mentoring of the new doctor, Laurence Chambers, and Carlisle had been taking advantage of the quietness to go over some of the basics. He hoped that it didn’t seem like he was patronising the young doctor with the simplicity of the material, but he knew it was beneficial to go over everything. Plus, being what he was, it tended to be good not to leave any awkward silences – normal humans considered his presence uncomfortable enough as it was.
Now, he emerged with his young colleague having been paged by the receptionist and being alerted of a new admission. He across at the young, sullen looking blond woman and extended her a pleasant smile. “Hi there, Katie, isn’t it?” he said, easily, his voice soothingly smooth. “Don’t worry, we’ll get you fixed up just as soon as we can. Dr. Chambers, why don’t you take the lead on this?”
He turned his smile towards Laurence, his golden eyes enquiring to his assent.

Like others of her kind time was irrelevant to Jayden and she rarely felt its passage, but the drive from the school to the hospital seemed endless and eternally uncomfortable trapped in the close confines of the car. Jayden could feel the divide in her feelings; she wanted to look at Caleb, but she knew it was safer for them both if she didn’t. She sat there angry, scorned and hurt she wasn’t sure how she would react to actually looking at him. Jayden knew she was more than capable of ripping him limb from limb, but was sure that would only hurt her more.
The scenery outside whizzed by the side window, but she took in ever detail form the way the wind blew the leaves in the tree to the trash littering the high way. Jayden’s eyes focused on the sign as they entered the hospital parking lot. Hospital? Seriously? She wasn’t even hurt and she knew it. Jayden cradled her cheek only as an act, if Katie’s hand was broken surely her cheek would be hurt; had she been human that would be true.
The back door of the car slammed as Katie exited and Jayden didn’t want to be alone in the car with Caleb. Too many things crowded her mind and fought to be said; none of then exactly pleasant. Keeping one hand against her cheek she pushed open the door with her free hand and swung her legs out. Rising swiftly and gracefully she stood and began to approach the hospital. It wasn’t somewhere she wanted to be because she knew Carlisle would be within its walls. How could she explain that she was her because of a fight over and man, a human man?
Katie entered ahead of her. Behind her she knew was the car that contained Caleb. She was trapped.
Slowly she entered the hospital and saw Carlisle speaking to Katie then acknowledging another doctor. Jayden’s head dropped. Both hands cupped her cheek that still lacked the necessary pain. She could catch his scent mixed with the stale scent of air conditioning and cleaning products and she knew he must have caught hers. She waited for him to speak to her. Waited to be punished, ridiculed, and embarrassed. Love was the one feeling Jayden couldn’t shake no matter what Carlisle was to say to her; the love she held for Caleb. And Jayden despised that feeling.

That drive to the hospital was among the most awkward and horrible moments of Caleb’s entire life, if it wasn’t just the worst outright. The journey wasn’t long, but he felt like he had just driven from Tennessee to Nova Scotia, not from Forks High to Forks Hospital. The tension had been intolerable; almost enough to give him a nosebleed, but it wasn’t the kind of tension that could be easily broken by inconsequential small talk. He had the strongest impression that if he had tried to say anything he would have ended up with a broken nose, rather than a nosebleed, and so he had kept silent. It was horrible and the encroaching guilt in his gut was not leaving him alone. Not even for one minute. He knew that he owed both girls an explanation, but he also relied on the fact that both need medical treatment. It was a poor stall, but a stall nonetheless and Caleb would take what he could get.
He watched as first Katie and then Jayden stalked out without so much as a backward glance. He consoled himself with the fact that they had both headed into the hospital, that was something, at least they would be treated. Now alone in his car, he let out a frustrated sigh; frustrated not at the girls, but at himself. Of course he had known this would all blow up eventually, what else could happen? But every time he had considered making a decision it had always seemed like a good idea to stall. Well, too late now, the situation had exploded and now it was all about containment. Damage control. Ugh, he had no idea what to do; all he knew was that he still cared for them immensely, both of them his heart broke for.
He brought his fists down hard on the steering wheel and then jumped out of the car, walking briskly after the women. As he entered the reception area of the hospital he noticed that there were already two doctors seeing to the women and he walked slowly towards them trying to banish the hangdog expression from his face. He couldn’t show any guilt here, it wouldn’t be becoming of him, and any gossip would reach back to the school. He inhaled deeply his dark eyes looking from the girls to the doctors and back again.

Laurence had been enjoying his time spent learning from Dr. Cullen. While some of the things that they were going over today, one of their more quiet days, was a little basic, Laurie didn’t mind at all, thinking it relaxing to review material and cases he was already familiar with handling, and believing that it was always good to practice any skill, even if it was as simple as an IV placement or blood draw. He had really begun to admire Dr. Cullen’s style of practicing medicine. He was always very calm and collected and for being so young himself, had a wealth of knowledge that Laurence hoped he could absorb even just a fraction of.
As their pagers went off, Laurence followed just a few steps behind. He listened to Dr. Cullen address the blond woman, who he obviously recognized, perhaps as a patient before, or maybe one of his childrens friends (as Laurence had learned from the nurses Dr. Cullen had several foster children). Laurence nodded as Carlisle suggested he take lead on this case. He could feel the familiar nervousness creep up, knowing Carlisle was watching and wanting to impress him with his work, on even a minor case such as this.
“Hi I’m Dr. Chambers” he introduced himself to Katie. “Can you tell me how this happened? “ he asked, knowing it was always good to determine the events surrounding the situation first to decide if there were any injuries being overlooked. “And do you have any allergies? Or medications you’re taking?”

Carlisle smiled and stepped aside to allow the promising young doctor to take Katie’s full attention. Dr. Chambers was a new resident of Forks Hospital and had not been under his mentorship for very long, but even so, he could already see that he would make a good doctor – he was thorough, his knowledge seemed to be well founded for his age and his bedside manner was commendable. Yes, Carlisle would enjoy teaching Laurence to hone his skills. He watched now as he began asking Katie the preliminary questions, a calm expression covering his features.
However, at the second shunt of the automatic doors, his toffee eyes flicked to attention, his blond eyebrows rising. Before he saw the hybrid, he smelt her unique aroma and a surge of concern ran through him. At first he didn’t connect her to Katie’s presence, thinking that perhaps Jayden was having problems adapting to school life. However, when he saw the odd way that the hybrid was holding her cheek and the young man that followed with the stony expression, he could only assume that something untoward had occurred. His amber eyes swept over to Katie and Dr. Chambers briefly and he cast a confident smile at the young woman. “If you will excuse me, you are in good hands here, Miss. Florence.”
With that he stepped forward to meet Jayden, giving her a calm, but questioning look before neutralising it to one of professionalism. He turned to the nurse that had come to hover at his shoulder and smiled at her. “It’s okay, Sandra. This is Jayden Murphy, why don’t you seeto making this gentleman more comfortable?”
He gestured to Caleb and waited for the nurse to move out of earshot. He wondered, without allowing it to cloud his face, just what had happened to cause such an intense feeling of antagonism between the three of them. At least it gave him a valid excuse to move Jayden into a private exam room, though; he just hoped that Dr. Chambers had picked up on it too.
“Miss. Murphy, would you like to follow me, please?” he asked her gently, with a calm smile, as he began to walk to somewhere that they could have the necessary conversation.

Katie nodded her head slightly to Carlisle, her mind flashing back to when Edward had found her unconscious in the woods. It seemed like ages ago, but Carlisle's face remained ever the same. She remembered how embarrassed she was that day, to be in the presence of two beautiful Cullen men, and how she had to keep her thoughts on math to concentrate properly. But even now, as Laurence and Caleb entered the room where she was, she couldn't bring herself to even think about something like that. She was too upset, too angry to get nervous or flustered in their presence.
"No allergies, no medications," she replied plainly, her voice monotone as she tried to focus and pay attention to her doctor. Caleb will be dealt with later, she told herself. Right now it was about her and her throbbing arm that was swelling by the minute. The pain was as present and intense as ever, and she tried her best not to move her hand. She didn't bother glancing back at Jayden or Caleb, not wanting to waste her time with them. Instead, she pretended they weren't even there, and that the only reality was her and Laurence. "I punched someone," she muttered, not mentioning exactly who, because to her it was fairly obvious.
Katie looked over to Carlisle as he spoke, assuring her that she was in good hands. She nodded, never having thought otherwise in the first place but appreciating his professional concern. He went to tend to Jayden, who she hoped was feeling it as much as she was, but forced the very thought of the brunette from her mind. She knew she shouldn't dwell over it, that it didn't matter anymore. Caleb and Jayden could have each other, hell, they were made for each other. The fact that Katie ever thought she was the only one in his eye proved to show just how foolish she was.

Jayden was still staring at the clean linoleum on the hospital floor as Carlisle approached. His scent was soothing and familiar, but at the same time Jayden felt afraid of what he would say and do. Another scent approached with him, human, and was dismissed by the friendly professional voice of Dr. Cullen.
Caleb, Jayden assumed was the gentleman Carlisle was sending Sandra off to make more comfortable. Comfortable, Jayden almost laughed out loud at that. He wasn’t the one with the broken hand like Katie, or the counterfeit damaged cheek like Jayden. Was his heart broken? Jayden doubted that and didn’t even glance in his direction as Carlisle spoke, she didn’t need too his face was there every time she closed her eyes.
There was a harsh tension in the room and Jayden knew everyone else must be feeling it; it was almost like a monster in the room that no one was naming. So much for hiding the reason for been there from Carlisle, Jayden though he was perceptive and all seeing; a father. Right then Jayden didn’t care where she was taken or what Carlisle was going to say she just wanted away form the other two players in the trio.
Perhaps Carlisle was a mind reader, like Edward, or incredibly initiative, or this was procedure with all patients Jayden didn’t care she was just glad when he lead her away from the room. Without looking up Jayden nodded and began to follow Carlisle away form the crowd no doubt so they could talk. He spoke to her so formally and Jayden cringed. If she could just explain first, just tell her side, maybe he wouldn’t be so angry.
“Carlisle,” Jayden urged in a low quick tone that would be caught by his ears and no one elses. “I didn’t hit her, I promise. I was a all a misunderstanding, nothing more. I wouldn’t have even come here but…” Jayden kept her hands clutched to her cheek looking up at him as her words tumbled out quick and almost silent. “Appearance’s sakes.” She added knowing he’d understand.

Carlisle kept quiet as he led Jayden away from the humans that were littered around the reception area and the curtained cubicles that they usually used for this kind of thing. He knew that Jayden may want to speak to him about what had happened and he had no desire to make her feel uncomfortable in such close proximity to those involved in whatever incident had occurred. He listened closely to the quick, quiet words that the young hybrid spoke as they walked down the corridor together and he nodded ever so slightly.
“It’s okay, Jayden,” he said, in similarly hushed tones, barely moving his lips as he spoke lest someone’s attention should be drawn to them. “I understand why you came here, hold on.” He paused and pushed open the door to an unused exam room and stood aside, allowing the woman to enter first in an automatic gentlemanly manner. Once the young woman had stepped through the door he also shifted inside and closed the door behind him.
“Either way,” he said, a gentle smile on his face, which he hoped showed her that he was not judging her actions. “I’m afraid you’re going to have to keep up appearances for a while now. I trust that you’re completely unmarked? If so I’ll have to put some dressing on the site of the ‘wound’.”
He wandered over to the side of the room, to the trolley always laden with generic medical supplies and began to pick up some gauze and surgical tape. “I assume it wasn’t a sporting accident, then?” he asked, gently enquiring, though he did not want to pry, he similarly hoped to be kept abreast of any challenging situation that Jayden was going through, firstly because exposure affected them all and secondly, because he cared about her well-being. He knew that deciding to try to fit in with humans had been a big decision for her, and he hoped that whatever had occurred that day wouldn’t dissuade her from the notion.

Jayden let herself be lead away from the gathering group in the waiting area, she never looked back at Caleb knowing it was better that way, less painful for both. Instead Jayden let herself concentrate on the floor of the corridor and been thankful Carlisle seemed more controlled then she felt.
Speaking in hushed quick tones Jayden knew Carlisle would hear her and she felt reassurance in his reply. She hadn’t realized she’d been seeking reassurance until he said he understood her actions.
Slipping passed Carlisle as he held open the door Jayden entered the exam room turning quickly on her heel to face him. Her hands still clung to her face hiding the unaffected area that showed no mark from the hit Katie had given her. As Carlisle closed the door Jayden looked up at him, “I’m sorry. I sure what happened didn’t expose you.” She said quickly in reassurances of her own.
Jayden didn’t feel judged, or anything but kindness as Carlisle spoke to her. As he asked about her cheek Jayden dropped her hands from the area showing it completely unmarked. “No, I wasn’t marked or even hurt. My skin is as impermeable as yours.” She said with a evident sigh. Part of her wished she had been hurt, maybe then she wouldn’t feel so bad. Stood there she knew that no one could see her pain, but Katie’s was perfectly evident in the swelling fish she had seen grow just form the car to the waiting room.
Turning her cheek towards him Jayden perched up on to the examination bed to have her ‘wound’ dress. “I came here for appearances and because I didn’t know what else to do. She broke her hand on my cheek, that’s going to seem suspicious.” Jayden said feeling her anxiety rising. “This is all my fault.” Jayden said clutching at the edge of the examination bed and feeling it crunch slightly as her breath sped up. With each blink she could see Katie hitting her cheek again and hear the bones crushing.
“It was a fight, well she hit me.” Jayden said shamefully knowing that her words had sparked Katie to hit her. She knew she should have calmed her temper and checked her words before saying them, but she just saw red and was hurt. Now it was she and Katie that were hurt and she wondered what Caleb felt. “Carlisle, I did something so stupid. Something so wrong.” Jayden said hanging her head again as he came back towards her with the medical supplies. She knew if she told him he was probably going to be mad, at the very least disappointed. Her actions had been hypocritical, the very thing she had done was the very thing she had first fought with Edward about; a human and vampire relationship.

Carlisle nodded slowly as Jayden rushed to reassure him that their cover was not blown. Now that he knew partially of what had gone on, he was also similarly confident that their identities remained hidden. From his brief interaction with Katie, who had luckily already had contact with himself and Edward, which should dissuade any doubts she now had, he had not been able to see any suspicion. Then again, he knew that she must have been in pain from her broken hand, and perhaps once the daze of that had subsided… He consciously paused in his thoughts, knowing that there was no point in getting ahead of themselves. He knew that they were sufficiently covered to make a swift and inconspicuous getaway should any one of their family slip up, and it wasn’t like Jayden had bitten the girl. He lay a comforting hand on Jay’s shoulder and smiled at her kindly, betraying none of his thoughts on his face.
“Jayden, don’t concern yourself with us. Exposure is our greatest threat daily, and if that is what has happened here we will be able to get you away quickly, with no fuss and I highly doubt that anything that took place will have exposed everyone,” he still spoke in slightly hushed tones lest someone should be listening in where they shouldn’t. Stepping back to look at her unscathed cheek, he also cast her another calming smile. “Though, from what I’ve seen, I don’t think it’s as bad as all that just yet.”
He nodded and hummed a little in concurrence as the auburn haired girl told him that she wasn’t hurt or blemished at all. He had thought as much, but he was far from an expert on hybrid physiology and so he had thought it best to check with his ‘patient’. “Okay,” Carlisle responded, turning to pick up some gauze, bandages and medical adhesive that he hoped would mould to Jayden’s skin. “Calm down, Jayden, it’s going to be okay,” he murmured to her whilst fixing the dressing to her face. He stepped back and looked her in the eye, meeting her worried ones with his own gentle golden ones.
After a moment or two’s thought, collecting his mind before speaking again as he was wont to do in high-tension situations where he had to be absolutely sure of himself, he addressed the girl in a gentle but confidently authoritative tone. “We all make our mistakes, that’s just nature, human and otherwise. If we didn’t then we would never learn and that is what sets us apart from the average animal, so don’t be disheartened. Would you like to tell me what happened? Something to do with that young man that escorted the pair of you in here, I’d wager?”

Jayden knew that if what had happened in anyway compromised Carlisle and the Cullen family she would never forgive herself or be bale to live with herself. After all his family had done for her, the last thing she wanted to do was blow their cover and be the cause of their leaving. If she could do it all over again, Jayden would stay away from the humans or at least not get involved with one. With Carlisle’s hand on her shoulder she felt a little ease sweep through her and she sighed feeling her shoulders relax a little.
When Carlisle initial concern was with getting Jayden away from the exposure, if it happened she truly felt loved and cared for. “Thank you Carlisle, but you’re my friends and if my actions reflect on you…” Jayden let the sentence hang out of shame for her actions and reactions. As Carlisle’s smile calmed her Jayden looked at the past situation through even eyes. “I don’t think anyone thinks any more of me then been a silly teenage girl.” She said ashamed of that been people’s view of her when she was far more then a teenager. During her teenage years Jayden hadn’t acted that way at all.
Happy to get off the subject of what had happened Jayden was even unfazed by talking about herself and her physiology. “I’m sure it would take a lot more then a human hit to injure me. My father always remarked that my skin was as tough as his.” She said with a smile of satisfaction. “Right now I’m not sure if I should be glad of that, or feel guilty for the indestructibility. I feel I should have marks like the other girl.” Jayden said trying to remain still as Carlisle dressed her ‘wound’.
Calm wasn’t something she could get a firm hold on. The emotion itself was as fleeting as it was recurring. The hybrid took a few deep breaths as Carlisle looked at her with his gentle honey colored eyes, eyes not unlike hers. Jayden felt a deep urge to cry, a sob felt trapped in her throat she was glad tears weren’t reflecting in her caramel eyes.
“Thank you.” Jayden said hoping it would show the real gratitude she felt, could words show that much?
As he asked if she wanted to talk about what happened Jayden wasn’t sure what to say. How was she going to tell him it was over a boy, a human boy. “It was a silly fight…over a boy.” Jayden felt like the teenage girl she appeared as she said the words. “Yes, Caleb. It seems he was hedging his bets.” She said plainly, hoping Carlisle would understand.

Laurence motioned to the nurse who was standing nearby to make a note in the chart that Katie was not allergic to anything and was taking no medications, needing to document everything and concerning himself right now with her injury more than the paperwork. He could see her hand already starting to swell, and could tell from the way she was holding it that there was a good chance it was broken.
He nodded, nonjudgmentally as she explained that she punched someone which is how she got injured. He would tell how distracted she was, watching Carisle escort the other female away. “I’m going to give you something for the pain, I can give you a pill, but it’ll take a little longer to work, or if you don’t have a problem with needles, it would start working faster” He said giving her the option. He wouldn’t increase her anxiety with a needle if she had a phobia of them and could tolerate the pain, but if she was okay with it, it would be the quickest way to make her feel better.
“I’m going to have to put some pressure on a couple areas of your hand, just to feel where the break is and make sure that the blood flow hasn’t been compromised. I’m sorry if this hurts, I’ll try to make it quick” He said never liking to inflict any further pain on his patients, but knowing there could be serious problems if he wasn’t thorough.

Caleb looked at the good-looking blond doctor that approached Jayden and paused about a metre or so away. There was something oddly disconcerting about him and even though he seemed to know Jayden, there was something in his gut that was loathed to leave her with him. He made him nervous, though maybe it was just because he was worried that the auburn haired girl would spill his secret and get him fired, or worse. This was a small town, getting a bad reputation was lethal and incredibly difficult to escape. It was bad enough that he had got caught cheating, but if everyone discovered that it was with not one, but two high school students… he wondered if it would be better or worse if they knew that he actually really did care for both of them deeply. He wasn’t ready to say love yet, but they said that there was a thing line between love and hate, didn’t they? The thought that either of these beautiful, kind, unique women now hated him made livid eels squirm in the pit of his stomach.
He looked up as he caught himself being referred to, the hackles on the back of his neck rising as the pale man instructed the nurse to make him comfortable. He knew what that meant, a clever device to get him away from the girls – or was that his guilty conscience talking? As his dark brown eyes caught Carlisle’s he noticed an odd familiarity about them, which caused his frown to deepen, though he couldn’t place it. Although he did sit as the nurse instructed him to, he couldn’t stop himself from fidgeting in an intolerable manner, earning him a glare from an old woman nearby. He cast quick, nervous glances down the room, nervous that Jayden had been led away, nervous that Katie wouldn’t catch his eye. He was so far away from her too. In a less than subtle move, he got up and began to meander closer, wanting to make sure she was alright, needing to know that her rage at him wasn’t going to expose them.

Katie tore her eyes away from Carlisle and Jayden as they disappeared into a semi-private area just like the one that she was in. Her right leg began to bounce repeatedly; the only way she could release her nerves without having a complete freakout in the middle of the ER. She figured Dr. Chambers wouldn't appreciate that, nor would the nursing staff. He motioned to the nurse for something, and in turn she jotted a few notes down on the clipboard that she held.
Laurence started talking about pain medication, and she felt a twinge of relief that some, if not all, of the pain would soon be gone. However, it was a constant reminder to her of the events that unfolded less than an hour ago, and the betrayal that she had to deal with. Shaking her head at the idea of pills, she cleared her throat. "I'm fine with needles, you can use them." Katie cast her eyes downward, focusing her gaze on her red and swollen hand that rested on her motionless knee. One would assume that she was examining her battle wound, but Katie's mind was elsewhere.
The mere thought of Jayden and Caleb being intimate sent her into a furious rage and she blinked back the angry tears that threatened to spill. Now wasn't the time for that. She needed to focus on herself, because now more than ever, it was necessary. Katie had let down the barriers and was punished for it. No wonder her mother always warned her against boys - and she always thought it was overreaction. Now it was just all too real. The pacing of feet brought Katie back to the moment and she glanced up briefly, instantly regretting it. Caleb was trying to shuffle closer, and as much as she wanted to be near him, she wanted to be away.
