Tag Kim Jared rubbed at his temples in a circular motion. His head was pounding, all this gaining control of his new found...ability was taking its toll. He’d missed another basketball practice. The second time this week, luckily coach knew he was one of the best on the team, other wise he’d be worrying about being benched. But he had bigger things on his plate at the moment. After all just because he was frustrated on the court wouldn’t be a good reason for phasing on the fly into a massive horse sized wolf. Yeah, he couldn’t imagine that going very well.
Ms. Branch wasn’t in the room yet, but than again no one really was. He’d skipped homeroom, more like missed the first half of it and decided it was best to just head to class. He sat toward the back in the newly assigned seating that was already posted on the board. ‘She must’ve prepared that when school got out the day before,’ he thought to himself.
Jared folded his arms and rested them on small table that served as a desk for two. He laid his head down and closed his eyes. He could hear the students footsteps a plenty in the hall way. The sound of the teacher next door writing on the black board with a piece of chalk. He could even smell the toothpaste each student had used prior to arriving at school that morning, all together the sounds and smells were making him nauseous.
But than he caught the sweetest scent. It was fresh, alluring, like a spring breeze flowing through the classroom. But as he looked around he noticed the windows were all shut, the dust on the window panes reminding him they’d been closed since the end of fall and they were barely through the Washington winter. He looked up at a girl that looked strangely familiar. It was her, she was the scent of Spring, and she was beautiful.
It was than he realized he was staring. “I uh,” he began taking his arms off the table and sitting up. “Good morning.” he said with a smile.

Kim made her way down the hallway, her head down, looking through the notebooks in her hands, making sure she had everything ready for her next class. When she walked into Ms. Branch's room, she saw that the seating had been changed. Her heart started beating quickly as she saw the name listed next to hers. Jared Greystone. The one person she had the biggest crush on in this school. Also, someone she was pretty sure had no idea she even really existed, a fact she was rather comfortable in. If he didn't know who she was, then at least it meant that she hadn't done anything horribly embarrassing around him to stand out. She knew that guys like him, the basketball star of the school, didn't fall for girls like her, so her crush on him was purely for her mind's own enjoyment. Still, seeing now that they'd be sitting next to each other meant she'd have to work to keep from embarrassing herself (or letting her feelings towards him show through).
As she walked towards her new seat she saw that Jared's head was down, it looked like he might be trying to get in a little cat nap before class started. She tried to keep her mind from thinking how cute he would look sleeping, knowing it would be horrible to get caught watching him. But as she walked over he looked up at her and seemed to stare at her for awhile. She looked at him, her eyes meeting his and feeling such a rush of emotions going over her. She knew she had to get ahold of herself. She looked down as she gently set her books down on the table then looked back up to realize that he was still staring at her. Did she have something on her face? Was her hair a mess? Was he just annoyed he wasnt sitting next to someone cooler? She self-consciously tucked some stray strands of hair behind her ear as he seemed to break from his concentration.
He was really talking to her! And smiling! She hoped her cheeks hadn't already betrayed her emotions by reddening but she could feel them getting warmer. "Um, good morning" She said, shyly returning the smile, before taking the seat beside him.

The nausea was gone. Replaced with this girls invigorating scent. He’d never smelled anything like it, he almost wanted to ask what kind of soaps she used, but somewhere inside he knew that this was no man made fragrance, though he wasn’t sure just how he knew. She looked familiar, but he couldn’t imagine meeting this girl before and not trying to ask her out. See, Jared wasn’t some goon that asked out a handful of girls every year, he’d only had one girlfriend since starting High School. And that was a fling with the lead cheer leader, the one everyone thought he’d make the perfect match with. But man was that a wrong prediction.
Jared’s mother was pure old school, and his father was even more so. Mom loved the old black and whites, so he grew up watching those and learing more about his Native American history from his father than ay of his class mates. Either way, his mother was strict, and he knew better than to talk about his home life if he wanted to maintain the image of all star.
“I’m Jared,” he smiled, “you look familiar, Science third period?” he asked. Hoping with all his heart that he was right.

I'm Jared. Kim heard those words as he introduced himself, in his beautiful voice from his perfect lips, though she needed no introduction. She had known who he was since they started high school. She looked at him for a moment in shock and disbelief that he was actually talking to her. Not just a casual Hi to someone sitting next to you before ignoring them, but he was introducing himself, as if to start a conversation with her. And his introduction had been followed by a question! Questions were most definitely the start of a conversation. Kim hadn't been expecting to talk to him today or would have tried to plan out some cute or at least intelligent responses. Instead she realized she had just been staring at him for a moment longer than normal.
"Yeah...third period science" Kim confirmed nodding her head, trying to keep herself from looking like a complete idiot, but knowing in her mind that (at least to herself) she had already failed miserably. She was a bit surprised that he even had noticed that they shared the same science class. "I'm Kim" She said finally a bit eyed realizing that she hadn't yet told him her name. She followed her introduction with a nervous smile, paired with her staring and delayed reaction, she was sure he was already regretting his attempts at conversations. "Guess we're partners for the next couple months..." She said, stating the obvious before looking down at her notebooks, afraid to see the interest completely leaving his face.

Jared smiled and chuckled lightly. He wondered if he had caught her off guard. He hoped that was why she seemed taken aback, and that she wasn’t harboring a sense of fear. After all, other than the growth spurt, no one really seemed to notice a change in him. But maybe she could, maybe somewhere down deep she knew to be afraid of him. Afraid of his beastly nature. The smiled faded for a few fleeting moments.
“Guess so,” he agreed, “I’m looking forward to it.”
Students began to trickle into the class, it was morning which meant no one was in a rush at LaPush High. Groans of annoyance and giddy whispers could be heard from the front of the class as the students found their names and places in the class. All the while Jared was silently thanking the Creator for the new seating chart. Jared grinned before biting his lip to hide it. He wrote 7 digits on a sheet of paper and scribbled his name underneath. Tearing the sheet out of his notebook he slid it over to Kim. “Just in case we need to get together for an assignment,” he offered.

Kim looked back up out of the corner of her eye as she heard his chuckle, thinking that he must be seeing her as a complete mess right now. But at least she was amusing him and not disgusting him. That had to be a little better. She saw his smile fade for a few moments before he agreed that they were partners and said that he was looking forward to it. She wanted to believe it, but didnt have enough confidence in herself to really believe that could be true and instead assumed he was just a very polite guy. It made her like him even more.
"Me too..." Kim said shyly, wanting to return the sentiment, but hoping she didn't sound overeager since she was sure that he only said it to be nice.
Kim looked towards the doorway as more of the students began coming in. Her heart sank a bit, feeling as if their moment alone was already being interrupted. She began watching them checking their new seat assignments when she saw the paper moving over to her. As she looked down at the piece of paper that had been slid to her, she unmistakably saw 7 digits and his name on it. Her heart sped up again and she felt like she wanted to scream with excitement. She didnt even know how this was happening. She got Jared Greystone's phone number! It was for future assignments sure, but he wasn't afraid of the possibility of her calling him.
She smiled at him with a nod, hoping her excitement wasn't too obvious. "Yeah, good idea...I should give you mine too" She said, opening up her own notebook and pulling out a blank piece of paper. She wrote down her phone number and then placed her name below it before handing it to him. She had just exchanged phone numbers with him. This was epic!

Jared bit his lip, eyes squinted just a smidgen. He couldn’t be sure, but he had to wonder of he was frightening her. She would barely even look at him. But just as he felt like his stomach was falling to his shoes in a huge knot, he saw her smile and give a nod. A clear sign, he hoped, that he wasn’t coming on too strong. When she started writing in her notebook a series of digits and below that, her name. He had to try with al his might from letting her see the goofy smile he was containing.
The boy smiled and nodded his head at one of the fellow members of the basketball team before turning his attention back on to Kim. Her scent was intoxicating, and it felt live every fiber in his being was yearning to know her. He couldn’t describe it, but it felt amazing, all except for the fear building in him. What if she didn’t like him that way? The only answer for Jared was that she didn’t know him yet, and he’d have to try, even though he was unsure of where these odd thoughts and sensations were coming from.
“So,” he said looking at her now. He felt like he was sitting next to a model, and his smile grew. “Your my new partner, its only right I know a few things about you, right?” he asked with genuine boy next door smile. “What are your hobbies?” he asked.

Even though it was Jared who had made the gesture of exchanging phone numbers first, Kim still felt wracked with nerves as she passed him her number. The insecurities in her mind began wondering if maybe he hadn't given her his number as a joke and would now think it was funny that she was believing him and giving the popular basketball star her phone number. Maybe some of his friends were around ready to laugh at the prank he was playing on her. But even though all of these doubts ran through her head, somewhere in her heart she knew that Jared wasn't a mean guy. She had liked him for long enough to know he wasn't that type of guy, he wasn't the jerk who would make her feel lesser just because he could. And peering up from the paper at his face when he took the numbers confirmed it. There was a smile, not a mocking laugh.
Kim knew that she would take good care of the piece of paper he had given her. Her excitement pushing through her previous doubts once more as she realized it had actually happened. He had let her have his number. Given it to her, of his own idea! While letting those thoughts release the pleasure endorphins to her brain, she was caught off guard as he continued talking to her after a brief nod to his teammates. She hoped this wasn't some dream that she'd wake up from. Maybe this was heaven, her biggest crush finally acknowledging her and giving her his phone number. She couldn't think of a better scenario.
"Hobbies? Umm nothing too exciting really...." Kim said, then quickly trying to think of something so she didn't sound boring. "I like music..and writing" She said trying to think of what she did in her free time. She wrote in a diary, and tried to keep from blushing at the thought of how she had written his last name after hers in it, just to see how it would look. "And the beach is fun" She said thinking despite her efforts she was not sounding as interesting as he was. "What about you...besides basketball" She said with a light smile, knowing his status there was common knowledge to the entire school.

He wasn’t ignoring her by any means. His eyes were locked on hers and it seemed his brain was trying to make sense of the thoughts whirling within him. He didn’t know her, yet...but he did know that some part of him felt like he did. Like he’d known her all his life. And yeah, growing up on the Rez did mean knowing everyones name and usually parents and grand parents. But beyond that, this was still school and their were still cliques.
He tapped his pencil on the desk a few times as she spoke, and looked to the eraser that touched the table lightly making the sound. He didn’t want his starring to come off as creepy, but Jared was fully aware if he didn’t take his eyes away from her momentarily he’d definitely look like a creeper. So in this case he needed the tiny distractions, even though he heard her every word. He smiled, “I love the beach, kind of a favorite past time of mine,” he admitted.
Jared wasn’t one for writing, or reading necessarily but the sound of the waves crashing on the shore always calmed him. And he found that now that his temperment seemed so off the charts, LaPush beach was usually the place to find him. The only place he fel secure enough to say he couldn’t shift, unless on purpose.

Kim found herself smiling again as Jared said that he too loved the beach. Though she knew logically it was silly to think of this as something that the two of them shared, a common interest, being that it was something most people their age enjoyed doing (especially those on the reservation), she still felt the happiness that they had both mentioned their like of the same thing, making her feel like she was a little closer to him already.
"The beach is nice" She agreed, thinking of how beautiful it was. Sometimes she'd go there by herself just to enjoy the beauty of the nature around her. Not being in with the popular crowd she didn't often go to many of their bonfires or parties they held on the beach but she enjoyed it on her own or with a few of her close friends.
She suddenly felt a surge of worry that their conversation might end right there if she didn't do something to continue it. On any other day she wouldn't have dared to talk to him, but having gotten the encouragement of him starting a conversation with her, she hoped a continuation wouldn't seem odd. "So...um...what kinds of things do you like to do on the beach?" She asked, wondering if he was a surfer, or just liked swimming or staying on the shore.

Jared felt odd, like there was a strange tug at his brain. But it was a good one, one that made him feel oddly relaxed in the current classroom setting. Even though he’d walked into that same classroom completely exhausted he felt like he was regaining some of that energy. As if Kim herself were the fuel for his inner flame, that kept the body burning and working sufficiently. He wasn’t complaining.
Jared’s eyes met hers and for a single fleeting moment they carried panic. As if she were calling him out on being a werewolf, as if she’d seen him change in the trees just off the sandy beach line. As he often did. When he couldn’t seem to change back the first week, it was the only place that helped him in returning to human form. The strange gleam of terror in his eyes passed swiftly and he laughed softly dropping his gaze from hers before returning it.
“I’m a weirdo,” he admitted,” I usually do yoga... I’ve seen it on those tv channels so I copy it. The beach helps me relax.” He wasn’t sure why he was sitting there like an pen book for her to read. But Jared wasn’t one for lying, but he was an offender of twisting the truth quite a lot lately. “How about you?” he asked while placing the pen on the table before them. He didn’t want to come off as having some sort of nervous energy.

Kim's heart was racing. If all of her senses weren't so aware of everything going on right now, she surely would have thought she was dreaming this. Afterall, the only times when she had spoken to her crush before had been in her dreams. Even then they were never really all that daring. A conversation would have been enough to make her wake up with a smile on her face. But now it was actually happening, more than she ever expected since he was actually trying to get to know her. She just hoped now with her fast paced heartrate that her face wasn't also turning beat red.
Kim was shocked to hear that he did yoga. It wasn't at all what he was expecting from him. She had assumed he probably liked to surf, or that maybe he was one of the daredevil guys that liked to cliff dive (something she had observed but she herself was way too chicken to ever try). Hearing instead that he did yoga impressed her even more with Jared. Not many men did yoga or would even admit it, but she saw it as a sign of his maturity and that he was emotionally grounded.
"Wow, I've always wanted to learn yoga...I've heard it can be really relaxing" She said realizing she had just repeated what he had said about it helping him relax. "Me?" She repeated as if surprised he still wanted to know about her. "Um, I usually go there to relax too...but just even looking at the ocean can help with that. Sometimes I just find a spot to sit and watch the waves. Or bring a book with me and just enjoy the peace of the area" She said sure she sounded like a complete nerd, or possibly even mentally challenged as she spoke of staring out into space.

Jared was aware that his doing yoga may seem off for most rez kids, especially guys. But his mother had always been into that stuff, the mind and body being one had always been an important thing. But, he wouldn’t dare ask his mom to teach him yoga, it would mean he’d have to be stretching with his mother somewhere public, and that was just too much.
“I could teach you,” he offered. “I don’t tell many people, but you can usually find me there around sunrise on the weekends, you should come by.” He said. “If it’s not too early,” he winked and laughed an almost gentle, light hearted laugh.
So she was the book reading type, which meant she was most likely a smart girl. Always a good thing. Though cheerleaders were pretty to look at and fun to date he couldn’t be serious with one, and he was pretty sure they knew that. It wasn’t that Jared saw himself as above them, rather he enjoyed stimulating conversation not just chit chat about nothing. He was a vegetarian werewolf/ jock, that did yoga at the beach when no one was looking. It was at this moment he decided not to mention his being a vegetarian, he didn’t want to seem like some oddball.

Kim knew that Jared's practicing of yoga wasn't the norm for kids their age on the reservation, but the last thing that it made her think was that he was weird in any way. She instead respected him even more for it, and was sure she could feel her crush for him solidifying itself even more than it had in the past. Her mind was screaming at her to stop letting her heart run away with her knowing it would only be painful to know she could never actually be with him. She knew if she ever did find a guy who liked her, it'd never be someone she felt as strongly for as she did Jared.
She looked over at him surprised and confused as he offered to teach her. Why was he offering to teach her? She had already determined he was too nice of a guy to just be trying to set her up for some sort of horrible embarrassment (or so she hoped). And she really wasn't anyone he would want to impress, he had barely looked twice at her before today. Did he want her to do his homework for him? Maybe he had arrangements with other partners before her to do his homework...but that didn't really seem like the kind of guy she always saw him as either. Her confusion was broken as she heard the sound of his laughter (not a mocking one but kind) and saw his wink. It automatically made her smile despite not understanding why he was being so nice to her.
"No its...umm, its not too early" Kim responded, hoping she didn't sound like a complete idiot. The truth was she would have gotten up at any time of the day to get to spend time with him. And the idea of him teaching her yoga, as the sun was coming up, fulfilled several romantic fantasies of hers.
"I would love to learn...if you're sure I wouldn't just be bothering you? " Kim told him, still confused of why he would offer and sure that he was making some mistake, maybe even just making polite conversation and not expecting she would actually go at the drop of a hat. "You really don't have to....I'd probably just get in your way"

He was happy to see her smile, but he couldn’t help the odd feeling that he was intimidating her in some way. She seemed unsure, and he wondered if the girl had heard something about him that was untrue. Or maybe she just sensed it, her whole body knew to stay away because he was dangerous, despite his gentle enough mannerisms. He felt a little defeated, but wouldn’t let it show. There was no way she could fear him, he was a werewolf to protect his kind, to protect her...
“Awesome,” he said with a genuine smile, he could feel the heat going through his veins. It was warm heat, like when you drink hot chocolate and feel it glide down your throat, except he could almost feel it going to every inch of his body. Normally it would alarm him, but it wasn’t the usual heat that occupied his veins just before a change. Still, despite the heavenly sensation, he tried to clear his mind, to make it go away just in case it lead to a transformation in the middle of the class.
He was in the middle of thought when he heard the word ‘bothering’ come out of her mouth. “Bothering me?” he laughed and looked over at her. “If I considered you to be able to ‘bother me’ I wouldn’t have told you when I go, would I?” Jared asked with a wink. “How about you meet me there Saturday at sunrise. Or I can meet you at your house and walk you over. Your call, just bring a towel, your bathing suit, and put your hair up, I’ll take care of the rest. Deal?” he asked. His eyes were focused on hers, partly to see if she would reject him before the words came out of her lips.
His brown eyes, didn’t waver, and though the look in them was gentle enough for this type of conversation, the fear behind them was intense. He hoped she couldn’t see that, after all he was a man of confidence.
