{Tag Mya; Twilight} Donathan walked past the small group of people that were towering over the welcome cake like a bunch of vultures. He shook his head lightly and tipped the front of his hat at the ladies in their sundresses before carrying on toward the far end of the grass covered area behind the station. The tents were set up, and the signs were hung, it really seemed a bit much for a welcome, but in this small town there seemed to be cause for celebration amongst the smallest of things.
With a sigh he took his seat and pulled the wood grain guitar up onto his lap, it was old he really needed to by a new one, but this one already held so many memories hidden within it. He played a soft tune that his mother use to sing to him as a child. A lullaby of sorts, it was exactly 14 years to the day since he lost his parents to the drunk driver. The same guy that only did 6 years for a crime Don would pay for with the rest of his days. It was scum like George Brayman that made him love his job so damn much.
Donathan tilted his head just slightly as his fingers plucked along at various cords sending the sweet sound into the air around him. It was his bubble, no one usually bothered you when you played a song that could make hearts melt, it was a time when people would just gather to listen. But not in this case, all his coworkers knew what today was for him, they had almost changed the welcome date, but due to much persistence they kept it the same. He was only a kid when it happened, and he didn’t need anyone’s pitty. He just wasn’t that kind of guy. Today of all days they kept their distance.
He opened his eyes slowly, not meaning to see anything before him, but his eyes met a pair of legs in blue uniform. Those weren’t man legs! His eyebrows pulled together and he looked up, the rim of his hat shielding what bit of sunlight there was. The silly “My Name is:” badge read Mya Foxe. His eyes opened wider, a girl? His new trainee was a girl, and a beautiful one at that. He looked away almost immediately afraid that he had been staring. His eyes searched the small crowd of men and women, but there was no sign of help. Nope, crazy Jack wasn’t around to save him, as he usually was.
He stood and laid the guitar atop his chair. Before twisting his body back to its normal position to face her. He held out a large somewhat intimidating hand and smiled almost bashfully, “I’m Sergeant Donathan Stevens, Pleasure to meet you officer.” He nodded his head, but due to his last conversation with Jack he knew he didn’t have to remove his hat. Don’s body was tense, and he tried to maintain the awkward smile.

When Mya had gotten to the welcome party she surprised by how much thought had actually gone into it,setting up tents and getting a cake. She assumed that it had probably been awhile since they had a reason to have a party so had just used to the rookies arrival as an excuse, but she didnt mind. A social event would be a good opportunity to meet the guys before working with them. She wasn't nervous at all about fitting in or whether she'd be good at the job, she knew she was made for this and merely felt the adrenaline rush of excitment, not being able to wait to start this career.
Mya had asked around to find out who her supervisor was so that she could properly introduce herself to her training officer. She looked over to the man they had pointed out to her, who was sitting playing a guitar who's music she had been listening to for the past few minutes. He was good. And even more than that, she couldnt help but think what a hunk he was. Damn! Tastey piece of man right there. She thought to herself with a smirk, thinking he'd prove to be a distraction while she was tryiingi to work, but a welcome one at that.
Mya walked over to Donathan, not noticing the looks of some of her coworkers who probably were worried about her interupting Don right now. She stood in front of him, waiting until he finished his song, not wanting to be rude and intrusive. When he was done she watched him look up, and gave a confident smile as he stood up and introduced himself.
"Mya Foxe, and the pleasure's all mine Sarge" She said reaching forward and giving him a strong handshake. She had always been told that a firm handshake showed confidence and she wanted to be taken seriously here, not just seen as a weak little girl.

‘Sarge,’ he could deal with that better than the pet names Jack often used for him. He shuddered at the thought, Don hated when the guy did that. It was like testing his manhood. He shook her hand lightly in an attempt to be gentle, but her grip was nothing but. He smiled and looked away, taking his hand with him in his efforts not to embarrass himself.
“So I uh,” he started, he couldn’t seem to kick start his brain into compliance. “I’ll be your partner,” he said regaining the manly tone and posture. He couldn’t let himself be afraid of a woman, especially a little pretty thing such as herself, but he was. Donathan Stevens was terrified. How was he suppose to train someone with boobs, and pretty hair?
“Welcome aboard Miss Foxe,” he ventured, taking a step back. She smelled nice, and he didn’t want to impose his burly figure on her. The straw fedora he wore shielded his brown eyes, and he was now glad that he had worn it. It was unlike him to actually wear his uniform, and luckily his title earned him some leeway with the force. A soon to be detective added to the flexibility, after wearing a uniform for ten years, it got pretty old rather quickly.

Mya smiled lightly at the gentleness that her Seargent had used in his handshake. He was obviously trying to show some consideration to the female officer. While Mya never wanted special treatment or anything less expected of her for being female, she still found this small gesture of his appreciated, and didn't see it in a condescending manner.
Mya's smile widened again as Donathan said he'd be her partner. Just hearing this hottie say that they'd be paired up, guaranteed to spend long hours together excitedher. But just as exciting was knowing she'd finally be on the job she loved and would have someone to show her the ropes. Someone with enough experience that she could learn but not so much that they were ready to retire at any moment and had lost interest in the job. Mya didn't think she could have picked a better officer for a partner if she had tried. And looking around the party, she was pretty sure that she did in fact have the best one. Hopefully this guy had a personality to match her initial impressions of him.
"Thank you sir" She said enthusiastically, still used to the formalities of the academy. "I can't wait to get started. I know I'll be able to learn a lot from working with you"

He smiled when she called him sir, it felt much more comfortable, his element so to speak. Donathan nodded his head once, “that you will Foxe.” Maybe if he didn’t say her first name he wouldn’t feel compelled to goof up. He still wished Jack was there though, and it was odd to have that thought. “Although Forks tends to be a rather quiet town for the most part,” he admitted. It was true, and it was partly the reason he accepted taking on his position here in the small town. He’d had quite his share of gunning down bad guys for the past 10 years. So quiet wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
“Uh, so what Academy did you attend?” he asked lamely. This was his sad attempt at starting a conversation, but Mya was lucky. A week ago he would have asked if she liked cheese, and which was her favorite. According to Jack though it wasn’t the sort of opener that made girls want to talk to you.
He gave a small wave to the chief who was giving him thumbs up from behind the young woman’s back. Blush rushed to his tanned cheeks, and he turned his face away chuckling lightly. Apparently everyone knew of his inability to talk to women, he immediately cussed Charlie Swann under his breath. He had known it was a woman, and yet still assigned him to her. Not even a warning. Not knowing what else to do he grabbed a chair that was set again one edge of the tent. He pulled it open and placed it next to his own, but not to close. “Take a seat,” he offered, trying with all his might to be sociable.

Mya didnt mind being addressed by her last name in the least. At the fire hall, most of the guys referred to each other all strictly by last names. It was only when both her and her cousin were around that they'd have to use a first name, or nickname, or some other method of distinguishing the two of them. "Maybe the quiet towns are the good places to learn" She said thinking perhaps it was better to learn the ropes before you got surrounded by things you were supposed to already be prepared to handle.
"I studied criminal justice at the University of Miami and also the academy in the city" She told him, proud of how well she had done there. "Were you from this area? What academy did you attend?" She asked, trying to think of the closest one, which she imagined would have been in Seattle.
Mya watched him retrieve the chair and place it next to him under the tent. She sat down as he offered it to her. "Thanks" She smiled at him appreciatively. "So how do you like it here?"

“Oh,” he laughed, “I guess it makes sense that they would be.” He smiled before taking his seat once more and resting the wood grain guitar on his lap. He didn’t like people touching his things, so it felt safer when he could hold onto it himself. He tapped the tips of his fingers against the instrument. Why did he have to draw blanks? He looked up at all the other laughing and mingling, instantly jealous.
“Florida?” he asked a smile tugging at his lips and a curve to his eyebrow. It was an infamous look that only Don could seem to give, and one that women usually found attractive - unbeknownst to him. “I was raised in Florida since I was 12, but more so the central region,” he said looking down and plunking absently with the strings on the guitar. Looking at her was a definite no, at least until he found his bearings.
“I never attended Academy,” he admitted running his fingers down the length of the string gently so as not to cause any sound. “U.S. Army for the past 10 years, I joined when I was 17, and never looked back until I got hurt, ‘Winged Scapula’,” he said motioning to the tattoo covered shoulder, “they sent me home, and I wound up here,” he admitted with a slight chuckle. He hoped it wasn’t too much information, he was kind of giving up his life story.
Donathan looked up to meet her gaze, bad idea. “I uh, I, um,” he stammered looking down again, damn all the pretty women! He needed like a travel along censor kit, a black box to hang in front of her face at all times. “It’s okay.” he said finally. "You?"

"Just a thought..." Mya responded as he said it made sense. Her eyes trailed down to the guitar he had rested on his lap. She remembered the melody she had heard as she had first walked over. "You sounded really great before." She smiled as she complimented him. It was the truth, but she still hoped she didn't sound lik eshe was sucking up by saying it.
"Really?" Mya asked, her smile widening as he spoke of being from Florida himsef. She leaned forward a bit, resting her hand on the edge of her chair. "Small world the two of us ending up out here. I was born and raised in Miami" It felt comforting to her to meet someone else from her neck of the woods. Even if she had family in the area, she spent most of her life in Florida.
"Army, wow" Mya said obviously impressed by the new information. She listened to him explain about his injury. She wondered if it had been a blessing or a curse to him. Maybe it offered him a way out and a chance to be away from the war, but maybe that's where he wished he was now. "Do you miss it?"
As Mya watched him stammering she wondered for a moment if maybe he didn't really want to talk to her. Maybe she had interupted him when he really wanted to be alone. But he wouldn't have asked her to sit if he wanted her gone, right? "Yeah, its okay" She agreed with him. "I've visited a few times before, I have some cousins here...but man, the weather takes some getting used to, I miss the heat"

He smiled more so towards the guitar, “Thanks” he said with a small laugh. He sometimes wondered if he’d be able to just play the guitar instead of speak words. It was the only way he knew he wouldn’t slip up and sound like some sort of idiot. “Been playing it forever, it was my mother’s lullaby.” He admitted. Donathan only hoped she wouldn’t ask about his parents, he much rather wanted someone else to tell her. He hated the pity he always received.
“Orlando,” he offered. Miami had to be pretty crazy, the city didn’t have the best reputation, unlike Orlando, home of Mickey Mouse and the rest of the crew. He was sounding less and less like a good prospect for a cop. Thankfully he had the years from the army under his belt, and he’d only had one female in the infantry he ran there. But she acted like a man, so he never had to feel the way he did right now.
“I miss it sometimes,” he said staring out at the crowd of officers in front of their seats. “I had some really good friends,” he admitted. Immediately his mind wandered back to the times he had most recently had in Iraq. His best friend Ryan’s death had weighed a heavy toll, but all deaths did. Seeing it happen only made it that much worse. “I think I only miss the familiarity.” He admitted not taking his eyes away from the happy people at table 3.
He smiled clearly glad she hadn’t been upset by his stammering. “Rain makes you tired,” he added, “Sun always helps keep you going.”

“That’s really sweet” Mya said sincerely as he mentioned that the song he was playing was his mother’s lullaby. She had to bite her tongue to keep from asking him if he played the song to his own kids, but she couldn’t help but let her eyes wander briefly down to his left ring finger noticing the absence of a ring. She looked back up at him quickly, hoping that it wasn’t obvious that she was checking for that sort of thing. He was her superior officer, she needed to impress him, not check him out.
“Orlando’s a nice city, great vacation spot” Mya said, remembering taking several weekend trips up there. She wondered if she had ever spotted him before unknowingly, but thought if she had she would have gone and bought him a drink or something. She wasn’t the type who would have stood shyly in the corner waiting to be talked to. So she was pretty sure their paths hadn’t crossed before.
She gave a nod as he mentioned missing it sometimes. She couldn’t really know about the friends that he had made there, having never experienced the armed forces or war firsthand, but she imagined that it would bond people pretty tightly. His training was definitely an asset to the small Forks police department, she was sure of that. “Maybe once you’re here longer, you’ll get the familiarity back” She said optimistically.
She smiled back at him, finding his smile contagious. “Yeah, I’m gonna miss that sun, hopefully we’ll at least have a few sunny days to keep us going”

Don smiled and gave a little snicker. “I guess it is,” he said, posing the phrase as more of a question. Why? Why did his new trainee have to look like a model, and why on earth did the word ‘model’ suddenly force him to imagine her in sparkling lingerie, and angel wings? He shook his head as if this movement alone could knock the silly thoughts out of his head. He really needed to stop watching America’s Next Top Model reruns.
“I’m a sucker for theme parks,” he laughed. Don himself was slightly surprised by his ability to crack jokes whilst be so nerve racked. Maybe it was all the training overseas? “Maybe,” he offered in response.
“You get used to it,” he said looking out amongst the officers and their wives. A few were clad in the navy colored uniform, others were here on their off day, like himself. And their attire was much less formal. The man rested his ankle on the opposite knee and held it for a moment. “Have you met anyone else yet?” he asked careful not to look at her too much.

Mya couldnt be sure if he was doubting the idea that it was sweet that he played his mother's lullaby or if he had just never considered it to be before but she smiled and gave a slight nod of confirmation to her statement, believing that it was. He held on to something important to him from his childhood. It showed he was sentimental. Sensitive, smart and a hunk? Is there anything this guy doesn't have? She silently asked herself, wondering how she'd make it through each day if these thoughts kept entering her mind.
She smiled as he told her that he was a sucker for theme parks, not sure if he was teasing her or actually serious. "I love them, the rides, the attractions, the food, the people in giant cartoon character costumes...I'm still not too old to want to get my picture taken with them when I go" She told him honestly, but laughing slightly at her own dorkiness.
"I guess so" She agreed, as he said that she'd get used tot he lack of sun. She wasn't really sure she would, but thought at least he was a good distraction on a rainy day. Who noticed the weather when those biceps were beside them? She forced her eyes to go back up to his face, not wanting to be staring at any body part too long. "So far just you and Chief Swan...but I had met him earlier when I got the job too"
