pre-Eclipse
Ah, volterra. a neolithic settlement and important etruscan center; a municipium in the Roman age. So much could be said about the architecture and the city that had become his home and his refuge. On any other night when he found himself without Jane, he would wander the town at night, basking in the deep and rich history that pre-dated him; taking in every wonder anew, from the palazzo dei priori, a Roman theater from the first century B.C, to the Pinacoteca in the Palazzo Minucci-Solaini. Though he had had nearly four hundred years of seeing the same sights, he always found some reason to enjoy the sights. An odd passtime for a Volturi guard, but when one had unlimited time, one may as well spend it learning all that could be learned about the area they were living in.
However, tonight was different. his mind was far from the sights of Volterra; in fact, his mind was in Forks, Washington. Ever since the meeting with Edward, Bella, and Alice, he had felt uneasy. Something about the unnaturalness of Edward's love also helped to make him anxious, but what truly troubled Alec was the strength and the powerful gifts that Carlisle had at his disposal. It had been quite some time since he had seen Carlisle, but he could still vividly remember how charming the man could be. It was a useful attribute to have, since he had managed to create quite the coven in such a short space of time. True, most of his coven were young; barely over a hundred years old, they were still new to the life, however to the contrary they acted; but between Alice's visions, Edwards mind reading, and who knew what else, Alec was a bit worried.
From a purely strategic standpoint, Alice would nullify any sense of surprise, and Edward made sure that not even their own thoughts were private. Then of course was the issue of Bella Swann. Her gift was remarkable; in all his time as a member of the guard, he had never seen anyone thwart his sister. Jane was quite possibly the most powerful vampire on the planet in regards to raw power, and yet she had been reduced to just another common vampire when she had been tasked to attack Bella with her gift. Alec's eyes narrowed; he loathed the idea that the witch twins had been beaten at their own game by a human. It was not only an embarrassment, but something that he would have to correct. Jane and Himself had been the cornerstone of the Volturi offensive for centuries, and they had been made to look like fools.
He turned the corner and began to head down the familiar street that led to the entrance of their shelter within Volterra, his head swirling from the sheer number of thoughts that clouded his mind. He knew Aro would never allow the Cullens to go forth without a contingency plan, so there must not be too much danger at the moment. In the end, however powerful they may be, Jane and himself had been able to handle much more than what the Cullens brought to the table. A shadow of a smile crossed his face for a moment, but was instantly dispelled as his thoughts wandered once again.
Aro. The man that had become as close to a father figure as he had ever known. Aro had trained the twins, he had crafted and helped to hone their talents into a devastating one-two punch against even the most formidable coven. He had taught them to be brutal warriors, and refined beings. He had brought out the elegance and intellect on one hand, and cruelty and punishment on the other. He had never once questioned his leader's decisions, yet this was one that still troubled him. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he had decided that he was going to trust his leader as he had done so many times before...
A noise to his right drew his attention, and he turned his eyes quickly in that direction. He dropped into a crouch, and prepared to loose his abilities at a moment's notice. "Show yourself, or I'll kill you." he wasn't in the best of moods, and he certainly was not about to deal with any lurkers.
