I'm so sorry you had to die like that. I'm so sorry. You were still a baby, not even a year old. The girls are leaving. They have to go. I can't believe what they've done, and I can't even look at them the same. I'm so sorry. I didn't really get the chance to tell anyone about my rats. But I own rats. I did own 6, now 5, soon to be none. Smeegol was a baby, I helped raise him from the time he was 10 days old. I had him neutered and put in with my 3 female rats. Hoping they could be buddies. I'm going to spare you all the trauma I'm going through now on how he passed. My rats were my pride and joy. I loved them like my babies. But now I can't even look at them the same. I can't even let them touch me. I'm mortified and traumatized.

I'm so sorry hun *hugs* I remember you telling me about your rats the other night and I know how much you loved them. I have a feeling I know what happened, from the way you talk about it, because something similar happened with my hamsters a few years back and I know how horrible it is. I can only think that perhaps he was too young and they got upset by another scent on the little guy, but even so, it's a horrific thing to have to go through and I can totally understand your reaction.
A lot of people think 'oh, it's just a rat', but they're just as loving as any other pet, and it hurts just as much to lose one. Just remember, if you need to talk, we're all here for you. I'll be online pretty much every night, if you want to talk at all, and you're more than welcome to PM me if I'm not on and you just need to vent.
Take care of you hun, give yourself time to grieve, and no matter how hard it is, try not to blame the girls too much, they don't know what they did.

As a rat owner you hear stories, it's rare that they would go this far, and when you hear the stories you think, 'Okay, I could handle it. It's instinctive to them'. No it's a completely other story when it happens to you. I'm going to spare everyone the gorey details so you all aren't as traumatized as I am. But I can't even get a necropsy to see if he died of another cause, or if they attacked and killed him. Because if it's the latter I need to find out why. I know the main culprit, and it's possible that with her age right now I wonder if she has a pituitary tumor. It's just...ugh.
I haven't even told my parents yet. I don't know how I can. What I'm going to say. They have been bothering me to rehome them all as it is and this is just going to send them into a fit. It's just...ugh. I don't know if I should tell them flat out the truth, tell them what kind of happened, or just flat out lie. I don't want them on my backs telling me I'm a bad owner.

First of all hun, you are not a bad owner. Like you say, these things are rare, and you can't see them coming. I would say you should tell them what happened, and let them know how upset you are. They should respect that, both because you're upset right now and because you're mature enough to face them about it.
I know it's hard to think about telling them, but it'll have to happen sooner or later, because they'll wonder why you're rehoming them, so it's best to tell them up front. Just remember, they're your parents, and they love you, and that should come first, over any 'I told you so' instinct. If need be, soften it a little and keep the gory details out of it, and just tell them the basics.

Awh Esme I'm really sorry *hugs* My dog just passed, and it was a result of my other dogs, and it was really hard...I know its hard and don't think that you're a bad owner because that isn't true. They are animals and sometimes their instinct is to do that. It's horrible when you lose someone you love and if you need to talk about I'm here
