Carlisle nodded, an understanding smile on his face. He knew what it was like to be at work all the time, he was a doctor, after all, the difference was that his job was what he lived for second to his family. And his family understood Carlisle’s compassionate compulsion to serve his penitence to the human race by helping them every hour of the day he could. Without the hospital and the opportunities it gave him there would be no Carlisle.
“It’s good thing that you bothered then, isn’t it?” he commented, gently, though he figured that what she was really getting at was that she wanted someone to be there for her in her time of need. Someone to take care of her when bad things happened. He reached out and took the photo that Elaine offered him, amber eyes carefully taking in the boy on the photo. It certainly wasn’t what he had been expecting and he stared at it for a long moment while Elaine spoke, being careful to keep his face smooth and neutral. Once she finished talking he handed it back to the girl and regarded her with slightly cooler eyes.
“Don’t blame yourself, Elaine. It takes two to break a relationship and it’s easily fixable if you both want it to. Come back to me for any help you need, or anyone here - you have more support than you seem to realise… The cost is not my department, I’m afraid,” he told her, apologetically. The monetary concept of health care had never been one that he had grasped completely due to a combination of the fact that money was really no object to the Cullens at this point in their long lives, and that they had never needed and would never require conventional healthcare. “If you stop by the administration desk on your way out, Barbara will let you know the details. I’m going that way, in fact.”
He smiled at her and began to walk over to the door, opening it for her in a gentlemanly fashion, his brain quickly working over what he had seen in that photo.
