Carlisle Cullen was not usually one to leave his family’s side by choice when he had a night away from the hospital. However, on this particularly chilly September evening he had excused himself from his wife to wander through the forest. He knew it was useful to occasionally roam his territory, especially the part of it that was not readily seen by human eyes - just to make sure everything was in order, that the treaty was being adhered to on both sides. Well, he trusted the wolf protectors on the Quileute Reservation to keep to their side of the bargain (it helped that there hadn't been any since the Cullens had made their return), but he could never be certain that some visitors of his heritage hadn’t meandered over the other side of the invisible line drawn years ago. Thus, now, he walked that invisible line, careful not to step a single toe into the wolf territory and allowed his thoughts to wander over the changes in his household over the last year.
With Edward’s discovery of love in the form of the Swan girl, Bella, things had become infinitely more complicated, but infinitely more pleasurable. At last he could lay to rest the old fear that he had turned his first son too young, that he had inadvertently denied him the magic of love for his eternity. But, on the other hand, the Cullens were not experiencing a rare, sustained form of tension between the children - Rosalie and Jasper unsure and downright against the inclusion of Bella in the family secret and the rest accepting of the new member of their family. That had become an inevitability somewhere along the line, but when and in what form remained a great source of tension, a choice that his son did not want to make, but one in which the rest of the family could take no part. No, that was between him and Bella.
Thus he continued walking at a rather slow, human pace, flexing his thinking muscles as he did so.

It was rather embarrassing to have anyone know that you live in a makeshift one person cabin in the middle of the forest. That was why Reily rather liked to avoid making close friends at school. That was what she told herself, but the real reasonw as because she stood out. She shyed away, didn't talk much like she used too. Her makeshift cabin was sort of permanet now, for it had held a year now, and had helped her shield herself from the outside world.
The bark of the logs where beginning to crumble off, and a beautiful ivy rope touched up the sides to bring yet more enviromential things into the making of her home. The crunches of the leaves underfoot alerted the girl of an approaching figure. Curiousity getting the better of her, the girl escaped her home, and began to approach as well, occasionaly taking cover behind trees and poking her head out.
Finally she saw a man, though she was too far away to tell much about him. He didn't smell human. He smelled like her. But the girl was still learning to smell out different races, and so she didn't trust herself at this point. Suddenly it occured to her the man would smell her any minute now, and so staying calm, she waiting for his attention to be caught.

Edward hadn't intended to go out following Carlisle that evening. He had gone on a walk of his own. Since the incident with James, Edward had been more paranoid of their surroundings and he often headed to woods before going back to Bella to ensure her safety. He was surprised when he heard his father's thoughts enter his head, Edward knew that he must be near by. He decided to go join his father, when another pair of thoughts entered his mind, one who had just picked up Carlisle's scent. Edward wasn't close enough to pick up the scent himself, but took off at full speed.
It didn't take long before Edward realized it was another vampire, an unfamiliar one. This put all of Edward's senses on edge. He didn't want to have to fight off another one so soon, but would do whatever was necessary to protect Bella and his family. Edward approached from the opposite direction as Carlisle was walking (or so he assumed when he didn't pass him). He saw the girl peering out from behind some trees.
He knew Carlisle wouldn't approve of him attacking her without finding out if she was a threat first, so he held back on his protective instinct and walked the last few steps more slowly. "Hello, You must be new..." He assumed since he hadn't encountered her before.

Suddenly a crunch of leaves behind the girl sent her spining around just in time to see a boy a bit older than herself begin to speak to her. She was rather spooked that he was able to sneak up on her like that,- and suddenly the same smell lingered off him as well as the man now behind her. Her hair caught on the wind and a strand flutter around to her face. Pushing it back, she studdered for words.
Um.. Hello. I was just.. But no. Not really. I've been here for about a year, whether you knew it or not. Is this all your property?
Reily was careful not to let it slip she was deffinately new to this. It was be increasingly obvious though, so she didn't see the need to mention it. Transfixed by the boys face, Reily stood there, with her hands still on the tree behind her, staring blankly at him.

A year? Could she really have been here a year without us knowing, sensing something? Edward thought to himself . It was a disturbing thought to him that they had missed her presence. He hoped this was not a sign that they had missed more. Could they be more around here? He took a deep inhale of air checking for others that may have traveled with her. The only other scent he picked up was Carlisle's. But that didnt mean that there weren't others that were still in Forks.
"A year?" Edward repeated his thoughts, still surprised by them. "My family and I live near here. We've set up a permanent residence so we like to be aware of any...visitors" He told her, trying to be as diplomatic as possible.

"A year? My family and I live near here. We've set up a permanent residence so we like to be aware of any...visitors."
Suddenly aware that she was in the wrong, the girl let a deep expression of sorrow strike her face, then leave immediately. "Oh. I'm sorry. I really didn't know anyone was in these forests. I really didn't have the sense to look. I really didn't have any other place to go.." A rather disturbingly depressed look appeared on the young girl's pale face.
"I could always leave if you wanted me too." When Reily was in the wrong, she was never really assertive, that was of course unless she honestly thought she was right. Piecing his possible thoughts on her matter, she quickly added, "Oh don't worry, it's all be quiet where I live a bit farther away, nothing really happens, if.. that.. was what you.. might be worried about."

"It's alright" Edward said calmly, feeling his muscles relax a bit. "You didn't know, and you doesn't seem that you've brought any extra attention to yourself, or to us" He said, knowing that this was the biggest issue. They hadn't heard of any disappearances, and the only deaths had been attributed to James' coven's arrival recently.
"Thank you for your assurances." Edward said sincerely. He could tell by her thoughts that she was being truthful with him. "You don't have to leave, at least not yet..I do ask that while you're here you don't hunt in the town or surrounding area." He said, not wanting to speak for Carlisle who may decide it was too dangerous to allow this newborn to stay. "My name is Edward Cullen" He introduced himself.

"It's alright. You didn't know, and it doesn't seem that you've brought any extra attention to yourself, or to us. Thank you for your assurances."
Breathing a sigh of relief, the girl broke her gaze, and said, "Your welcome." It isn't like I'd be here is something did happen, thought the girl. She probably would have scattered in fear a long time ago if something had happened.
"You don't have to leave, at least not yet..I do ask that while you're here you don't hunt in the town or surrounding area."
Nodding briefly to this, the girl said, Um. Your the first.. of us I've seen since.. my.." Reily was clearly avioding using vampire and transformation. It just wasn't something she went around telling random people she met. To be honest, most of the people she did met she shyed away from, for fear they was set her off so easily. So. Very. Easy.
"My name is Edward Cullen."
"Oh. Yea. I'm Reily Laute. I'm not really, from around here. Are you?" She knew he lived here, but did he always, that's what she wanted to know. It seemed unlikely that a whole family of vampires would happen to live here. Maybe they were from somewhere around where she was. Never know.

Edward nodded understanding as she mentioned that he was the first vampire she had seen since being changed. "How long ago was it?" Edward asked. He knew there was a chance she wouldn't answer this question as it was rather personal, but people tended to think of the answers to their questions even if they didn't speak them, which would still tell him what he wanted to know.
"It's nice to meet you Reily" Edward told her. "My family and I have lived here a few years now. We travel around a bit so that no one notices when we don't start aging" He told her honestly.

"How long ago was it?"
After thinking about it for a while, the girl finally answered, It's been about 15 months. Adverting her gaze down to the ground, Reily felt depressed. Suddenly perking up, a smile sprang to her face, and Reily said, But I've been copping, sort of. Biting her lower lip, she looked down again, and her smile disappeared.
"My family and I have lived here a few years now. We travel around a bit so that no one notices when we don't start aging."
Nodding, the girl said, "That must be hard." Leaving it at that, the girl idlly dragged a single leave around in circles on the floor. Suddenly, the gir looked up at the sky, only to remember it made her dizzy when she did that. The sky was open and grey from clouds, and from what part you could see from the tops of the trees, it made her feel so small. Stumbling slightly back onto the tree, Reily strived to gain back her balance, and keep the boy from seeing that. Crap!

"You look like you're coping very well for it being so recent" Edward told her, in a comforting manner. He really did believe she was doing well. Many newborns were hard to hold a conversation with unless you had caught them moments after feeding. Even then they were often impulsive and aggressive. She seemed in control of the thoughts in her head.
"It's not too bad" He told her, knowing that it could be worse. If he didn't have his family it would be much harder for him to move around so much. But with them, they always tried to make the best of it, even if they did grow attached to certain places they lived in. Forks was one of those places, which is why they returned. Edward saw Reily look like she was stumbling back. "Are you alright?" He asked her.

"You look like you're coping very well for it being so recent."
"Not that it helps all that much, but boarding yourself up with a lot of fresh plant scents to linger on helps keep your mind off the hunger, if only a little." Truth was, she was always a sucker for the environment and things like that, even before she was 15, and the new scent they gave off for her distracted her a lot.
"It's not too bad."
"Well, I guess it's nice to have your family with you." This suddenly made her miss her own family. "Are you alright?" he had asked when she stumbbled back. Clutching to the tree, she didn't want to admitt the truth after he had given her such a night compliment on how she was in control. "Oh yea. That just happens when I look at the sky. Nothing major. I just get dizzy..." Rising panic was slowly ebbing its way into the girl.
She needed to get out of here. It would be embarrassing to go crazy in from of him. But wait! He said no hunting around here. Slightly sad, Reily really didn't know where she could go to get something to curb her hunger. Not without hunting in at least a nearby city. Raising her gaze to him, so added, "Always has."

Carlisle continued his meandering walk down the length of the border of his territory, his head so full of thoughts that he didn’t stop to take account of the true scents around him. It was only when he caught Edward’s scent on an uplift of wind that he drew himself to attention. He stopped where he was, turning around to welcome his son as he smelled the scent becoming stronger, as if he was approaching. However, that seemed to change suddenly, it veering off to the right and away from Carlisle’s location. At first this didn’t seem too important, it could just be that Edward had decided that he wanted some space alone with his thoughts for the evening. However, just as Carlisle was about to turn away, he took another tentative sniff at the surge of wind and another scent hit him. One that he was sure his son would have gone to find, especially since the events that spring with the nomadic coven. Carlisle froze to the spot for a moment, not wanting to interrupt the meeting if it was going well, but his greater concern as a father overweighed this. The new vampire could be dangerous, he couldn’t just stand by and hope things turned out alright.
Thus, he set off at his speediest pace - not as fast as Edward’s, but it still only took him a few moments before he neared the two vampiric scents. He slowed to a human walk before he did so, however, not wishing to alarm the visitor, for there was the chance that she was willing to embrace their rules, or even their way of life. He lingered a few metres away from Edward, his expression quite tight, but to all appearances, calm.
Everything alright, son? he asked, cautiously.

The scent behind the girl strengthened uptil leaves crunched under foot behind her as well. Whipping around, Reily caught sight of the man. Her eyes showed no emotion, for she was carefully concealing it, but inside she fought rising panic for a completely different reason. Now forgetting about her hunger, Reily took her hands off the tree, and idly examined where her fingers had been. There were small dents in the bark, as if it were wet when she clutched it.
Looking up, Reily meet his eyes and said, "Umm... Hello." Slowly, she pieced together she was outnumbered and mostly deffinately out matched. She began to ebb her way around the tree so she could barely see him. She knew this wouldn't help, but it made her feel better to hardly see him. Looking back to Edward, her eyes began to pleed for help. She was way in over her head, if they decided to attack.

Carlisle immediately saw the effect he had on the girl and decided in that split second that the seeming shrinking violet would not mount an attack. At least, not just then. By the looks of it she was on her own, and while he was inclined to believe that a lone vampire would be no match for the Cullen family, he only had to think back to the spring to remember what one talented vampire could do to endanger them. His better nature, however, had already decided to be as open to the girl as he could.
My, she looks young, he thought to himself as he rounded the tree to stand beside his son. Too young, who could have done this to her? No one around here, certainly.
Once he was stood by Edward he extended a small, friendly smile at the young vampire girl, keenly noticing the crimson hue of her eyes.
"I'm Carlisle Cullen," he told her, his voice smooth. "I see you have already met my son?"
As he spoke his mind quickly ran over the events of the last few weeks. Had there been any disappearances, strange molestations?
