The man moved over to stand beside Edward. Then he smiled. This lightened the mood a bit, and Reily managed to smile back. Suddenly her mind flew to places that would be out of this area where she could feed. Slowly her eyes were darkening, though honestly she hadn't ever noticed that they changed. Fighting back the thoughts, the girl heard the man say his name.
"I'm Carlisle Cullen."
Cullen? thought Reily. Her gaze drifted from the boy, to the man, and back several times. She couldn't see the resemblance, but let it slide. She didn't care much what they looked like, all she cared about right now was her hunger. Keeping it under control was being rather, no, extremely hard.
"I see you have already met my son?"
"Son?" croaked Reily. It made a bit more sense now. Nodding warmly to them both, she tried to create some type of conversation to distract her. "So.. Are you the head of the family?" Reily began to wonder if he would make her move. She wouldn't mind much, it'd just be hard to find another place where she could hide, without much risk of being found.

Carlisle’s smile widened a little at Reily’s question, seeing her look between himself and his son. He put into place that she was a newborn, or at least had just emerged from the chaos of being a newborn - that was probably it, she seemed more in control of herself than a true newborn. It didn’t seem that she had a mentor, though, and with that thought a twang of pity pulled on his heartstrings. He could only remember back to when he was turned, trying to figure everything out for himself. Luckily, he had his compassion that he brought over from his human life that stopped him from hurting the humans around him. It seemed she had no such luck, though.
“Yes, you could call me that,” he affirmed, in response to her asking if he was the head of the household. He did like to think of them as equals, and would always associate himself with any mistakes that his family made, but in certain situations it worked well to have a head of the household. This appeared to be one of those. He took a minute step forward, maintaining his open smile. He just wished he knew what ground Edward and this girl vampire had covered before he had come on to the scene. That lack of knowledge stopped him from throwing out the laws of territory that were abided by here - he didn’t want to repeat his son.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch your name,” he prompted.

"Yes, you could call me that."
A nervous little smile spread on the girls face as he stepped towards her. "Um.. Ok." She didn't exactly know how to tell him she had been living here for a year, for fear he would get upset. Her crankiness was definately affecting her mood now, and her eyes narrowed as she looked at him. She knew this would happen, she only hoped he would understand.
"I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch your name."
"Reily Laute," she said. She went back to clutching the tree beside her, to keep her from suddenly speeding away in search of food. "I." Reily had nothing to say as he neared her. Nothing other than 'good bye' and race off. This was extremely hard, and fighting back snapping on the guys was even harder.

Carlisle’s quick, well practiced eyes saw the signs of agitation and he stopped moving, slouching into a casual stance, though his vampire body did not need it for comfort. His nose also picked up on the surge of sap in the tree rising to the bruising that Reily was causing the way a human’s blood would do so. He held out a hand, palm open in the universal sign for peace, that no harm was meant.. He nodded once as she introduced herself, filing the name away in his mind with an intricately detailed account of her scent.
“We’re not trying to corner you, Reily,” he spoke in his most persuasive tone, his voice low and smooth, confidence without arrogance. “I’m sure Edward has already told you that we like to keep a permanent residence around these parts, which requires us to maintain a certain status quo to ensure that we are not discovered.”
At this point he could have told the girl that they lived differently from others of their kind, but he had learnt from experience that revealing that sometimes incensed the ’standard’ vampires to the point of violence, of flaunting their blood thirsty ways. No, vampires were, generally, not the most accepting of creatures that roamed the earth and he didn’t want to introduce more danger to his family.

“We’re not trying to corner you, Reily. I’m sure Edward has already told you that we like to keep a permanent residence around these parts, which requires us to maintain a certain status quo to ensure that we are not discovered."
Reily snapped, just like she feared. "Corner me?!" These simple words suddenly brought back her transformation night. How she was corned, and... She did not want to recall what happened, but she did anyway. After the flashback, Reily said, "What made you think I thought you were going to.. corner me?" Her words were harsh, and rather quick. There was a mixture for fear and anger expressed on her face.
Seeing his universal peace gesture, Reily suddenly took control of herself again, only to find her shoulders were tense, and the poor tree was hurt. She slowly let go of the tree, and relaxed. Her eyes were still black. "I'm.. sorry," she managed to get out. Reily was embarrassed and looked down to the ground.

"You just seemed agitated," Carlisle breathed, showing no outward appearance that the harsh words affected him.
Internally, however, he was rehashing his guesswork at her age. She did seem to be showing a little of the unpredictability of newborn emotions, but then, that could just be her personality and he knew that he shouldn't just jump to conclusions. A smile spread out from the left hand corner of his mouth as the young vampire apologised for her outburst, making him give up on deciding her age by circumstantial guesswork.
"That's alright, Reily. This would be difficult for anybody," he tilted his head a little. "We understand."
A glimmer of moonlight filtered down on the trio, through the dense cover of trees and really highlighted to Carlisle at that moment, the deep blackness of Reily's eyes. This made him a little uncomfortable - she needed to feed, the thirst must be driving her crazy, but her hunting grounds would be miles away - would she maintain the control needed to leave Cullen territory? They would have to make sure that she stayed upwind of the town and away from the reservation for the time being.
Is there scent of Bella in the house? he thought towards Edward, rapidly supposing that the location they would have most control would be in their own home. Of course, that would only work if Bella's scent had been cleaned away - something they weren't accustomed to doing so much anymore.

"You just seemed agitated."
"Did I? Sorry.." Frowning, the young girl listened as the man continued.
"That's alright, Reily. This would be difficult for anybody. We understand."
This somehow made Reily feel a little better, though it did nothing for her condition. Suddenly, the moon shone on the three, and the wind rose to a gentle ongoing breeze. Closing her eyes, Reily took a deep breath. She had always loved the night, especially the feeling of the wind flowing through her hair as a comforting pace. Eventually, the girl opened her eyes again, and stared at the duo infront of her.

Edward watched as Reily snapped at Carlisle and then managed to calm herself. He knew they'd have to be careful around her. Being around a newborn was never easy. Being around a thirsty newborn was even worse, and from the look in her eyes, she needed blood. Luckily Edward knew that both he and Carlisle were experienced enough that if her thirst caused her to attack they could easily fend her off. It would just be much easier if it didn't come to that.
Edward looked over at Carlisle as he heard his mental question. He thought back, Bella had been at their house 2 days ago. Her smell had faded a bit, but he was still able to detect it this morning. How that would affect this newborn, Edward was unsure. He gave his father a single nod. It was small enough that he knew Carlisle would understand his answer, but if Reily even picked up on it, it wouldnt look like Edward was doing anymore than agreeing with Carlisle's last statement that they understood.

Carlisle caught Edward’s nod in his peripheral vision and he quickly worked that information into his thinking. So the house was still infused with the scent of a human - it would be unfair to take the vampire there and expect her to be able to think sensibly while the thirst ravaged her throat. His eyes met hers again, wondering how long she had been hiding out in Forks, how long she had resisted the temptation of the human blood that lay only a few miles away.
“There’s no need to apologise, Reily,” he told her, warmly. “I’m sorry if you have been through this before,” he nodded in Edward’s direction. “But how long have you been here?”

Passing off Edwards nodd, Reily looked into Carlisle's eyes as he asked her a question that she had already answered. Taking a deep breath as to not snap at him again, she answered truthfully.
“But how long have you been here?”
"A year." And again, Reily admitted to herself that she wouldn't mind moving, if she had too. It would be a little saddening, but she wouldn't get upset over it.

Carlisle almost balked at that information, his thoughts closely echoing her own words.
A year! except he thought it in exclamation. Had they really become to lax in their wandering over the last few years that a vampire had managed to slip under the radar for so long? He was suddenly thankful that nothing more serious had happened - it would only have taken one slip from the newborn for a massacre to have occurred in Forks. He appreciated the girl’s control, it could not have been easy for her, though he knew that she could not have been into the town - that tested even a practiced vegetarian’s tolerance.
Despite the rapid conjecture of his thoughts, his calm expression remained steady - it was only Edward that could hear him vowing to take a more active role in securing the Cullen territory. What would be the point in doing all he could to save life with his unique talents when he was allowing those same gifts to take lives right under his nose?
“You don’t live in the town,” he led, wondering where she was holing herself up away from the world.

"You don’t live in the town."
Shaking her head, the girl said, "No I don't. That's asking myself to become more of a monster than I am." Although this unnerved her, she kept her voice reasonably steady. Again, she went to assure nothing more than her had been over by where she lived. "As I've told your son, no more than I have been around where I live. Do you wish me to leave?"

“Not necessarily,” Carlisle responded, quietly.
She thought of herself as a monster, which, unless she was playing a very tricky game of deceit, somehow foiling Edward’s mind-reading ability, meant that she definitely had the capacity to embrace the vegetarian lifestyle. If she wanted to. It would be difficult for her though, and he wasn’t going to force it upon her if she didn’t ask for it. Changing people was not Carlisle’s business, so long as any visitors that came to the Cullen territory abided by their rules, he would not try to change their lifestyles to fit in with theirs. If they asked him for help in changing, well that was a different matter.
“There are different ways to exist,” he told her, matter-of-factly. “If harming humans is distasteful to you. And we won't ask you to leave so long as you remain inconspicuous to the locals and hunt outside of our territory.”

“Not necessarily. There are different ways to exist."
"Other.. ways?" repeated the girl, somewhat dazzed. Was there really any other way? None that she could think of. Was it possible to live on human food? This thought crossed her mind, then was ejected as a 'No'.
“If harming humans is distasteful to you. And we won't ask you to leave so long as you remain inconspicuous to the locals and hunt outside of our territory.”
"What if I don't like hurting humans?!" Reily crossed her arms and looked rather stubborn turning her head to the side. "What other way is there?" Reily was and has always been very curious. Even if she didn't like the idea, she would of course give it much thought. Maybe there was something that could help her through this troubled time. Or was it always like this? She stiffened. It couldn't be. There had to be another way to be than this.

Again the girl’s mood changed and Carlisle suddenly wondered at her true motives. It was rare that anyone could remain undetected by Edward’s talent, but it happened - just look at Miss. Swan. No, he wouldn’t give up the game just yet. He shrugged a little, trying to look nonchalant.
“There are other creatures with blood than just humans,” he commented, wondering if she would be able to discern anything by the amber hue of his and his son’s eyes compared with the bright crimson or black of any other vampire.
