Relaxing as the man spoke, Reily began to understand. If only a little, you could survive off anything with blood, perhaps.
“There are other creatures with blood than just humans."
Yes. The immediate click in her brain to this statement was cats. Then it was all animals in general. Cat? What was she thinking. "So.. You can live off animals and such?" asked the girl. This intriged her, for she had never thought of that. Honestly, she loved animals, and never thought of killing them. Nevertheless drink their blood! But it was a possibility. Turning her gaze to the silent boy, she thought, Why doesn't he say anything when his 'father' arrives? This lingered for a second, then left her thoughts as she turned back to the man.

Edward had been focused on monitoring her mental process throughout the conversation that he hadn't noticed he had been quiet on his end until he heard it in her thoughts. He thought now might be a good time for him to speak up, he wasn't about to be the one to decide whether or not she could stay, but he could help to explain about her diet choices. He knew at the moment she was a bit hesitant about them.
"Yes, animal blood is enough to sustain us. It takes some getting used to after you've had human blood" He told her, hating that he knew that fact from his own experience. He thought against telling her too soon how she wouldn't be satisfied by the animal blood. It wouldn't taste as fulfilling as the human kill. To a newborn, thirst was everything. If she thought that wouldn't be quenched, she may not even try it. "But its very possible. Larger game usually works best as they have more blood"

"Yes, animal blood is enough to sustain us. It takes some getting used to after you've had human blood."
Nodding, Reily understood what he meant. It was always hard to change from something to another, like habits. Thinking about this, Reily decided killing animals was so much better than killing humans. Suddenly, Reily realized she had no idea where or when to find animals around here. This was sort of embarrassing, so she kept it to herself.
"But its very possible. Larger game usually works best as they have more blood."
"Obviously." All this talk about food had gotton her worked up again. Crap. Suddenly out of things to say and to occupy her thoughts, Reily backed slowly towards the tree again. The sap had harded into a sticky mound, so she clutched, more like pushing her fingertips onto the tree again. It gave her something to do as she waited for the men to give her some kind of sign to leave. She really needed to get out of here.

Edward watched her, pretending to just judge her expression while he heard her mental reactoin to this. He didn't like telling strangers right away about his ability, not until he had gotten a good read on who they were first. He could hear her decide that she'd rather kill animals than humans. That was definitely a good start. Whether she'd be able to stick to it once she tasted the difference between the blood was another thing. But they would have to take this one step at a time.
He saw her reaction as she backed against the tree again. It seemed the talk of blood had gotten to her again. He should have known better than to focus on blood when he saw how thirsty she had been. "Perhaps we should talk about something else for awhile" he suggested.

"Perhaps we should talk about something else for awhile."
"Perhaps." agreed the girl. Why wouldn't they let her leave?! thought Reily. She was on the brink of just saying she had to leave, but was deciding against being rude. Somehow. Clutching more tightly to the tree, she said, "So what exactly can we talk about?" Her voice was rather cranky, not exactly snappy and rude, but cranky deffinately.

Carlisle watched the exchange between Edward and the girl closely, monitoring her reactions to the information that his son revealed. She didn’t seem scornful of their way of life, nor did she seem to be placating them, which were the standard reactions of vampires that wandered upon their large family. No, she just seemed a little stunned that there was an alternative way to live, which wasn’t surprising considering the instant gratification that he saw human blood had on the regular vampire. One of his blond eyebrows kinked ever so slightly as she seemed reluctant to carry on their conversation. He reflected that was probably because she was new to the vampire race, though it was odd considering the amount of, albeit fake, respect they got from passing visitors.
“I’m sorry if we’re causing you inconvenience, Reily,” he told her lightly. “There is just one more thing that I would be interested in, in the interest of safety and staying hidden, of course. Whereabouts are you staying, you must have a permanent residence of some kind outside of Forks?”

“I’m sorry if we’re causing you inconvenience, Reily."
"No! No! I'm just.. not a fan of long conversations. Sorry." she lied. She suddenly felt very bad for snapping at them, surely they would understand? That had to.
“There is just one more thing that I would be interested in, in the interest of safety and staying hidden, of course. Whereabouts are you staying, you must have a permanent residence of some kind outside of Forks?”
"Permanent Residence?" reapeated Reily slowly. "Its not really permanent, really. More embarrassing really. I live much deeper into the forest," indicating this by a point to her right, "right of here actually." Staring at the two men, a small smile covered her quick motion of putting her hand back on the tree behind her, and digging into it tight.

Carlisle instantly turned to the east to look in the direction that Reily gestured in, his eyebrows knitting together a little. Unless the woods had changed drastically since he had last taken a run out here, there was nothing in the way of housing in that area. There was the little cottage further away that Esme was fixing up for Edward and Bella, but that was miles away from the Quileute border, not relatively on the edge. He turned back to face Reily, a little concerned.
“You have all you need there?”
He couldn’t help allowing his fatherly tone shine through, though he knew that the vampire would be hardy, without need of human luxuries. Still, they were comforting, especially to one new to the change. His real concern, however, was the werewolf pack. Even if she was another few miles in the opposite direction of them, her scent would register on their patrols of the border and it was terribly easy to rile their temper and distrust. He hadn’t heard anything so far, but the lack of confrontation did not mean that she remained undetected.

“You have all you need there?”
Nodding reassuringly, Reily's mind flashed to her house, revieling a sort of indoor campsite. Though there wasn't much there, it was filled with plants. Occasionally there would be a fire, from which she zoned out looking at, and thought her best on things. There was a tree stump for a seat, actually it was like an adventure to the girl, camping all around. She could find nothing wrong with it, she would have been out in the open, perfectly fine, but she used to cabin type house to lock herself up so she wouldn't hurt more than nessessary.
Knocking herself back into reality, the girl smiled meakly. It was sort of fun to challenge herself, though not having to eat like humans took some fun out of the experience.

As Reily thought of her house, deep within the woods, Edward was able to get a clear picture of it. He even was able to see the exact location, though he didn't know how they had been distracted enough this year to let it slip by them completely. He saw her set up and was a bit surprised at how well kept her home was. It wasn't the usual nomadic hole in the earth that many newborns survived in.
When he saw her smile he figured she was relaxed enough for him to ask something that could prove more difficult for her. "How did you manage to go unnoticed for a whole year?" He couldn't help but ask her. "What did you survive on?" He asked, needing to know if she waited for tourists to stop by or used some other means.

[that is a good question!]
"How did you manage to go unnoticed for a whole year?"
Shaking her head, Reily said, "I-I don't really know. Maybe it was just because I was careful where I hunted, and kept to myself." There was loneliness in the young girl's voice as she said her last sentence. Looking up directly into Edward's face, she said, "You can sort of answer that one though. How did you not detect me?" Smiling, the girl knew this could be a difficult question.
"What did you survive on?"
Tilting her head to the side, Reily answered, "Human's of course. I was careful not to hunt in this town, which proved harder that I realized. But I went to surrounding cities." Smiling, the girl deliberately forgot to mention sometimes even on the roads to the next city.

Carlisle’s gaze hardened a little as Edward questioned the girl over how she had remained hidden so well. It was a very good point, she shouldn’t have gone unnoticed, her scent, her kill pattern, Alice - they all should have led to her discovery long before now. But then a year ago, that would have been around the time that Edward had met Bella, the upheaval of the family, their move back, the showdown with the nomadic visitors. It was entirely possible for one lone vampire girl located far enough away from their local routes, hunting in other territories, to remain unnoticed. It was a weakness, to not know what was going on in their own territory and he made an internal resolution to keep a closer eye on things.
“I suppose your success in staying hidden speaks for your discretion,” he told her, his hard eyes softening a little. He looked at her curiously, wondering about her control. For a newborn to approach a settlement and not cause a ruckus… He only had to think of the other reports of newborns they saw from time to time in the newspaper. But there had been nothing.

“I suppose your success in staying hidden speaks for your discretion.”
Discretion? she thought, racking her brain for the meaning of the word, but couldn't. Her brain was filled with only one thing right now, but she quickly tried to push it aside. Finally deciding this word must be good, she smiled, and nodded. Hopefully she was right, she didn't want to seem stupid. Still keeping a firm hold on the tree, Reily said, "I suppose it does."
Glacing up at the sky, a lone bird flew by. Reily envied it's ability to stay just out of her reach. The clouds cleared, and the moon once again shone on the scene. The two men, the hungry vampire. "Can I go now?!" bursted out Reily. It was more of a sudden tone than harsh and annoyed. She sounded like she was in a hurry, and indeed she was.

Carlisle waited patiently as the young vampiric girl paused before responding to his cordial comment. His attempts at friendly diplomacy were all aimed at keeping the peace, at not pushing the newborn’s no doubt fragile emotions. He appreciated that her presence had been so understated up to now, and he didn’t want to endanger this, the people of Forks, or the treaty with the Quileutes by pushing her too far. Plus, the desperate hunger in her eyes was difficult to ignore, the Cullens rarely allowed themselves to get to that point of starvation as they were around humans far too much. His brow didn’t flinch a millimetre at the harshness of Reily’s voice, though the warm, liquid caramel of his eyes hardened a little.
“We’re not keeping you here, Riely,” he said softly, his voice just taking on the tiniest hint of a patriarchal warning tone. “We can be civil - we’ve told you about our lifestyle, we know about yours…”
He trailed off, but the implication was that now they knew she was there, she wouldn’t get away with any deviances from their rules. There was a haze of kindness to it, as there was to all Carlisle spoke, which also suggested that he was open to her presence - they would neither force their presence upon her, nor force her to leave the area. He glanced once from Edward to Riely and then added.
“If you want to experience life in a different way, Riely, we’re here.”
It was clear that the girl was ill at ease with the cravings that resulted from her transformation - how could he not offer her the chance for solace?

“We’re not keeping you here, Riely. We can be civil - we’ve told you about our lifestyle, we know about yours…”
Nodding, the girl released her grip on the tree, and was about to leave, when the man continued.
“If you want to experience life in a different way, Riely, we’re here.”
She was going to hate herself for doing this. "A.. different way? Tell me." Perhaps it was a way to escape this horrible hunger, she knew this was extremely unlikely, they had already made it clear it was inescapable. Reily drew herself back, placing her fingers back onto the tree, skimming the sap that now began to slowly ooze itself out of the poor tree. Taking her hands off, the turned to the two again, waiting.
