Kim watched Jared's reactions to her answers. They seemed to mean a lot more to him than she could figure out, but she couldn't decide whether what he was trying to get from her answers. As she thought about all of his questions she thought that they seemed like an odd choice put together. She didn't know what brought that on, or if it was all just random. She really didn't mind too much, it was Jared and she'd tell him anything he wanted to know.
The question about monsters seemed to have Jared concentrating on her answer the most. Kim couldn't figure out why that was. She had already mentioned liking sci-fi, which sort of connected with the monster thing, but were their other qualities she should have mentioned? Was having 3 heads a better answer? Or Green and Slimey? Maybe he was trying to see if they had the same favorite horror movie, or how creative she was.
Kim smiled as he told her he had something to show her, another secret. So far everything he had showed her tonight had been amazing. The whole setup he had arranged for her here, with the table, candles, music, flower petals, and wine substitute...it was all so perfect. She wondered what else he could possibly have to show her. But as he went on, she started getting worried. She looked over at the trees and then back at Jared. The truth was his words were already scaring her a little. She was afraid of what he thought would cause her to run. She was even more afraid of what he'd need to keep her safe from, more for his own safety than hers.
She took a deep breath, hoping this secret would still be as great as all the others and then she nodded. "Okay...I trust you Jared"

Jared took a deep breath and nodded. It was time for show and tell. His nerves had returned again. He could feel his hand shaking, not like he was going to phase, but more because for the first time. He was afraid. He was looking an angel in the eye, and he was going to show her the dark side of what he was. He bit his bottom lip and narrowed his eyes turning back to her again. He had to make sure she would understand. If it was the last thing he did.
“Remember that time I had to leave in the middle of the movie?” he asked remembering it all too well. He remembered looking down at the blue screen on his phone, Sam was calling. But unlike it used to be with the two buds, those calls couldn’t be ignored, and attended to later. Even on a date. A call at this time could easily mean he lost his temper and ate a kid sand bucket and all. Or worse. And it was worse, they were multiplying. A plague was stalking the teenagers of LaPush unseen.
“And I apologized for weeks?” he smiled. Hoping she would understand it was for reasons that at the time he couldn’t explain. The parking lot of the movie theater was packed. And Sam barely let the phone ring once before picking up. Paul, a kid from school had changed, Sam could hear his thoughts, an immediate meeting was in order. Jared remembered hanging up and sending her a text message, apologizing for suddenly feeling ill, and promising he would make it up to her. He wondered if she’d put two and two together.
“Well,” he continued holding her hand once more. “I want to show you the real reason why I had to leave. And, why I always seem busy at odd hours,” he said apologetically. He stood reluctantly and let go of her hand. “Stay here and I will be right back, just look to the trees, “and please,” he begged. “Don’t run.” He looked at her face once more and sighed before giving her a kiss on the forehead and turning toward the trees.

Kim could see how how nervous Jared was getting and it just increased her anxiety over the situation. She could understand him being nervous telling her that he loved her. That was only natural to be nervous about, even if he already knew how much she liked him. Just saying those words, especially for a guy, she knew would be hard. But that part was over now, and she thought it had gone well. Still he was nervous and his emotion immediately spread to her. She wanted to just ask him to stop acting so mysterious and just talk to her about what was bothering him but she could see how hard this was for him already so she let him do what he felt he needed to. She'd be patient.
Kim nodded as he brought up the date he had walked out on. At the time she had been sure that he was having such a miserable time with her that he just needed to get out. She understood she wasn't the most exciting date so had tried to accept that. But then he had been so apologetic about it afterwards she assumed it was just something that he ate, and he had probably gotten a case of food poisoning that couldnt wait until the end of the night. "Yeah...its okay, you cant help getting sick..." Then her mind followed that thought. Was he sick? Was that his big secret. Was it something serious? Was he dying? Her hands started shaking with worry for him as he held her hand.
Kim listened to him going on about how he was going to show her the reason he left and was busy at odd hours, again telling her not to run. Her mind thought up another option. What if he wasn't sick. What if there was another woman in his life that he wanted her to meet. Maybe he was in love with someone else. Did Jared want to have a polygamous relationship? Was he hoping she'd accept him seeing another woman if he came clean about it. Kim looked into Jared's eyes, scared of what the secret could be but nodded as he broke the contact of her hands and headed for the woods.

Jared had barely been concealed by the trees before he reached for his belt. This was a little awkward. But, he couldn’t afford ripping his clothes to shreds, not with Kim there waiting for him. He felt horrible, she was frightened already. He saw it in her eyes before he walked away. It pained him to see her anything but happy, but this was mandatory. If he didn’t tell her he would have to keep lying, and it was way too hard to lie to the woman he loved.
He stood in his boxers unbuttoning his dress shirt, his advice for any other wolf was to wear less clothing. But he was getting rather use to speed changing. He could easily make it if he decided to be an underwear run way model. He laid his clothing, all of it in a neat pile before looking up toward the stars. But the leaves covered most of the dark sky. He felt alone, truly alone. He had to wonder why him, why now? Why couldn’t he just be normal?
The frustration didn’t take long to muster. And it felt like only seconds before his skin felt as though it was bubbling, his blood boiling beneath the surface. A flash of heat, and he could feel the fur breaking through him. His hands landed on the cool soil, now gigantic paws took the place of his perfectly shaped human hands. He shook his large head, adjusting to the feel of his new skin. And he huffed as small sneeze for such a large animal.
For a moment he simply stood there, wondering if his transformations were loud enough for human ears to hear. His large paws moved slowly, as if he was trying to slow play the moment. He hoped she wouldn’t run, how would he explain running after her naked? She would never speak to him again she’d think he was a weirdo. A twig snapped between his large paw, and he hesitated for a moment before moving forward again.
Jared peeked out from behind the trees. He shifted his huge body so she could see him. He didn’t look her in the eyes afraid of what he’d see there. His Black fur seemed to melt into gray, with cream white tips. His fur almost shimmered in the moon light. He kept his large head down, like a dog who’d known he had done something wrong. He whimpered slightly before disappearing into the trees again.

It didn't take long before Kim was alone. She stood up, suddenly feeling the slight chill of the air without Jared's presence nearby. She stared at the area of the forest he had walked into. She filled with fear. She hated being without him and wished whatever it was he could have just told her here. She put her arms around her. Even if it was only a minute or two it seemed like almost an eternity that Jared was gone. Her mind flowed through the different possibilities once more. Nothing that she could think of seemed good. He wouldn't have seemed that nervous if this was a good thing.
Kim heard a noise coming from the trees and waited, expecting Jared to return. Instead she saw a giant wolf emmerge. Larger than any she had seen before in her life. Her eyes widened in shock taking a few steps back. She wished that Jared hadn't left, and prayed he had found a way to get away from the wild animal. She was too frozen with fear to run, or else she would have ignored Jared's instructions. Surely this was an exception to whatever he had been talking about.
She kept her eyes on the wolf, wondering if he'd charge at her. But as she watched, what was in fact a very beautiful creature, she saw his body language. It was anything but intimidating. He had his head lowered and almost looked like he was in pain of some sort. Her eyes softened a little as she realized the wolf wasn't trying to harm her. It wasn't some rabid creature looking for a meal, or even one trying to protect its territory. It was a spectacular sight to see. She was still too afraid to even think of taking a step forward to approach it, but found herself disappointed as it disappeared into the woods again.
Once it was out of sight, Kim wondered again what had happened to Jared. Then she started thinking about everything he had said. He had asked her about dogs...did he know about some tame wolf that he had found. Did he want to come show her? But why wouldn't he stay with her to watch. And that idea didn't explain his leaving. Then there was the wolf itself. It was bigger than any other animal she had seen, as well as any pictures of wolves she had seen. She felt stunned and confused, not even knowing what she should be feeling or making out from all of this.

Jared’s skin bubbled; it wasn’t too painful to change just felt odd, like burning, but only for seconds. As he stood, back in his more familiar body he sighed. He hoped she’d still be there when he got back to her. He quickly changed back into his clothing, buttoning his shirt in a rush. He looked around on the forest floor for his black dress sock. He cussed under his breath about the darkness being too dark, and needing a flash light.
He decided he was taking too long and doubted she would notice he was missing a sock anyway. She wasn’t a foot inspector. He headed toward the exact space between the trees that his wolf form had been when she seen him. He expected her to either not be there, or look like a deer in headlights. He was prepared for either. Jared tucked his dress shirt into his black dress slacks as he walked. Hoping she stuck around.
She didn’t look frightened, but she looked incredibly confused. His lips formed a line, and his eyes narrowed, as he tried not to laugh at her expression. He placed his hand on the trunk of one of the large trees and leaned on it. His sleeves rolled up to show his forearms. “You’re not afraid?” he asked his eyebrows rising. He moved toward her. Pushing himself off the tree. “Hollywood doesn’t get much right.” He laughed nervously.

The time that passed between when the wolf disappeared and Jared reappeared seemed a lot shorter to Kim than the time between when Jared first left and the wolf appeared. It was probably all her in mind, but right now her mind was filled with so many unanswered questions that she really had no idea what to think. She wondered if Jared would bring the wolf back out. She wanted to admire its beauty again. But she was also worried that Jared might not come out if he had walked into the middle of a wolf pack. Kim looked up just as shocked when Jared came out by himself. The wolf was the surprise and the secret. It hadn’t just been some coincidence or interruption. She could see it on his face, even if she still had no idea how she was still standing here after a wild animal came out.
She heard him question about her being afraid. She didn’t know how to answer that. Was he trying to scare her. Was it some kind of illusion, and the animal was never really there to begin with. He talked about Hollywood as he walked towards her. She instinctively took another step back as he did, but immediately regretted it. Earlier she had wanted to run into Jared’s arms when she thought that he may have been hurt or that the wolf may have attacked her, but now she was so confused that she didn’t want those feelings to cloud her thinking. She now worried he would take her action as a sign that she was afraid of him, which she wasn’t. She gave him an apologetic look, not retreating any further.
“Jared…I…” She tried to get herself to say something but she didn’t even know what it was she wanted to ask him. “I don’t understand…are you alright? It didn’t hurt you?”

Jared’s smile quickly vanished as she took a step to back away from him. The pain he felt shimmered in his deep brown eyes. She was afraid of him. Her foot taking place behind the other had sent a pain through him worse than he had dreamed he could feel. His composure quickly shifted. He felt like an idiot. Why couldn’t he just be normal? Why did he have to be a freak? And worse. A freak that frightened her.
He shoved his hands in his pocket and nodded. He didn’t know what to say now. Was it stupid to give away a secret to someone who would not want to share it? Her voice was the air, and he was drowning fast. He latched onto it whipping his head up to look at her. Was he alright, was he hurt? The questions seemed odd. Like there was a twist to them. Was it possible she couldn’t comprehend he was one in the same with the lone wolf?
He bypassed the question asking one of his own. He more so stated it as fact, “I frighten you.” Jared stood still. Not wanting to scare her again. He mumbled the words. “I’m not ill enough to hurt myself.” His eyes searched for hers and he took a single step forward. If she backed away again he would understand. “What do you know about werewolves?” He asked looking to the sand immediately.
Jared could only imagine how pathetic he looked. It wasn’t like him to wear his emotions, he usually enjoyed being more mysterious. His shoulders slumped, and his voice was low as not to crack. He looked like a different man. A warn and tired old man.

Kim saw the pain in his eyes responding to her action of stepping back. She felt horrible for having put it there. She wanted to go apologize, to put her arms around him. But her heart was still racing, and her legs felt as though if she took another step right now, she might just fall over. She wasn't scared of him, she didn't think she ever could be. She was scared of the unknown. Of the feeling of knowing she was on the outside of some vital piece of information.
Kim could feel it deep within her heart when he stated that she was afraid of him. She shook her head, hoping that despite her earlier action he would believe her. "No...I love you" She told him, a desperation in her voice, hoping that he'd believe her and not give up on her now. She needed him more now than ever.
Kim stared at Jared with even more confusion as he muttered something about not hurting himself. That wasn't what she had been asking she had been asking about the...werewolves? What did she know about werewolves? She wondered if he was joking with her right now, playing some odd practical joke with her. Sam was probably in on it, but she wasn't finding it funny right now.
"I know they're not real, its just science fiction, the things of movies" She told him her answer but had so many thoughts from the night flowing through her head. His nervousness, the secret he had been keeping, why he was so afraid of her running, but he was sure that he'd be able to keep her safe...the reason why he didnt appear until after the wolf was gone. Kim tried to find his eyes, surely what she was thinking now was crazy, wasn't it? She could see how serious he seemed, and almost to the point of looking defeated. This was no joke or prank. She used all of her strength left to slowly get herself to walk over to him. She hoped it would make up at least partly for her foolishness earlier.
"You can't be saying...they're not real right?" Kim asked him, afraid he would recoil if she tried to take his hand now, so merely stopping a foot or two in front of him. Her voice was shaking now with nervousness. "That...was you?"

He listened when she said she loved him. But the words wouldn’t form. They seemed to be stuck in the back of his throat. Yeah, he knew she was being sincere, he could see it in her body language. Could sense it in her beautiful eyes, but could she ever love him if she knew he wasn’t what she had thought he was? Jared simply stood there. Afraid to move, as if he did she would take off. Fight or Flight, flight seemed the better option. Even to himself.
She looked even more baffled about the werewolf question. He had thought showing her was the best way. After all, she would have probably thought him to be insane if he simply told her. Words were only worth so much. And in this situation pennies seemed about the worth. He stifled a laugh as she said they weren’t real. She really hadn’t figured it out. He was still safe. When her eyes found his he gave her an encouraged look as if to say you’re on the right track. Dig deeper.
When she walked toward him he took a breath. It felt like the first on since she backed away from him. He realized it may have been. He only looked at her as she came to grips with his secret. When she stopped in front of him he took a few steps, closing the space between them. He could finally feel the air in his lungs again. As her voice quivered he reached out a hand, brushing it gently against her cheek. Showing he was still the gentle, loving boyfriend he tried to be since the beginning.
Jared nodded slowly searching her face for an echo of the love he had for her. The moonlight seemed to make her skin glow. “And I’m not alone.” He stated. He kept his voice soft and steady. Just above a whisper. “I don’t change with the moon. I can control it. I don’t kill people.” He promised, “and I would never hurt you. But, I’m not exactly safe, I’m still learning how to control the sudden temper that,” he swallowed hard, “changing has given me.” He closed his mouth and waited for to speak. Was it possible she’d understand.

It was real. The craziest theory that Kim had come up with to explain all of this, and Jared was confirming it for her. How was that even possible? There had to be some other explaination, something she was missing, right? He couldnt actually be a werewolf. They didn't exist! They were just stories. Stories in monster movies. Her thoughts slowed again, realizing the connection to his other questoin. He must have been terrified of telling her, thinking that she'd think he was a monster for it. That had been why he was so worried, and so careful about all of this.
Not only was Jared telling her that he was a werewolf, now he was saying he wasn't the only one. There were others? She wondered how many others there were. Right now his hand on her cheek was the only thing that comforted her enough to make her think she could ge through this. She felt like an idiot for not having understood what he was showing her earlier when the wolf..no, when Jared came out as a wolf.
"The legends were true..." She said softly to herself. Every Quileute child had heard the old fables of how the tribe descended from wolves. It was old folk lore that she had never once thought had an ounce of truth to it. She assumed it was just meant to symbolize the tribe's strength, or something like that. She took a couple deep breaths trying to understand all of this. Trying to understand what it meant that her boyfriend, the man she loved, was a werewolf.
She listened as he told her he didn't kill people, a thought that even after learning what he was, never crossed her mind. She couldn't picture Jared as a killer, not ever. He told her that he wouldn't hurt her, yet he wasn't safe. She didn't understand. If he wouldnt hurt her why wasnt he safe? She still felt safe with him. He said he was learning to control his temper. What did that mean. And if it was tied to being a werewolf did that mean he only changed when he was mad, that she'd have to make sure she didn't anger him (not that she'd want to anyway).
"You havent always been like this?" She asked him. "Were you bitten?" She said trying to put together what she knew of the hollywood version with what he was telling her.

He stayed silent allowing her time to think. It had to be a strange thing to understand. He wondered if it was possible that she one day could. He kept his fingers on her though, not wanting to lose the contact if she changed her mind. He gently pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and let the tips of his finger trail down her neck to her shoulder, than her arm. He traced circles down the length of her arm, as he dazed off into thought.
Did the person you imprinted on have similar feelings, or did you have to make them learn to love you? Was it a gift granted to the both of you? Like love at first sight, or was it one sided, and he had just gotten lucky. He took her hand in his. All his movements much slower than they usually were, he was no longer afraid of crushing her, no that wasn’t it. He was simply afraid of scaring her again, seeing the fear in her eyes.
He couldn’t hold back his laughter at the questions she asked. He really didn’t mean too, but it was just so cute. She really was trying to understand him, and he truly appreciated it. He shook his head as he answered the familiar smile back on his face again. “No, I think that would have made me a puppy and a toddler, which would have made potty training super difficult.” He joked. “And I wasn’t bitten, I just kind of changed. Right after Sam, I got really sick, started burning up, but the fever never left,” he winked.
His face was no longer joyful as he went on to explain why. “So now you know werewolves exist,” he began to walk back toward the candles, “Our nemesis would be whom?” he asked. He wasn’t her to figure everything out, he could explain and answer questions, but he wanted her to fully understand.

Kim could feel the soft and slow movements of Jared's hands as they moved down from her face to her arm, and eventually took her hand. She couldn't imagine how the enormous wolf that had come out of the woods not long ago could be so soft and tender. It was really amazing to think about. He could have something in him that was so strong, so much larger than life, and still be this extremely gentle person with her.
She smiled a bit embarrassed as he started laughing after hearing her questions. She wondered how far from the truth she was. She had never in her wildest dreams entertained the idea that werewolves were real. It must seem so naive to him that she had been so blind to any signs that were there. She wondered if he had expected her to have guessed before now. She smiled as he spoke of potty training being difficult if he was a puppy as well. She didnt have the understanding enough to laugh yet, but knew that he was trying to make this as easy on her as possible.
"Sam..." Kim repeated as Jared told her he was also a wolf. "How many of you are there?" She couldn't help but ask. Was every teenage male on the reservation a werewolf? Was it some right of passage? If it was just something that happened, was it something that would stop as he got older? There were too many questions that she had to try to just prioritize them right now. He mentioned the fever that never left. He did always feel warm, but she had never thought that was something abnormal. "Do you still feel sick?"
She followed him back towards the candlelit area. She tried to think of who a werewolf's enemy would be. He already had told her that he didn't kill humans, so it wasn't humans. She thought back to the old legends. "The cold ones..." She said then looked back up at him with a shocked expression. They couldnt possibly exist too, could they? "Vampires?" She spoke the word, barely above a whisper.

Jared nodded when she said Sam’s name. He thought for a moment. How could he answer this question correctly? “Well,” he started, “have you ever met Paul? Paul Ketwa?” he asked her. They all went to LaPush High, but unlike himself he knew Kim to be a little more introverted. At least until recently. Now, she was the girlfriend of one of the most popular guys in school. Which meant cheerleaders envied her a bit, and more people were bound to know who she was. Not to mention he always had her on his arm. She was like the angel on the top of a Christmas tree, only she hung off his arm instead, and he was proud.
“He’s the only other one we know of right now,” he continued still keeping his voice rather low. It didn’t seem to matter that he knew they were alone, he always took precautions, after all this was a secret that could get him confined to a padded cell. He smiled warmly when she asked if he still felt sick. “No, that went away after the first phasing,” he replied, “but I’m still getting used to the other stuff.” He looked to the sand for a moment as they walked. She was taking it so well it made him want to scoop her up and kiss her till his lips went numb. But he thought it may be better to let everything sink in fist.
He nodded again this time more slowly. “The cold ones,” he repeated in a whisper. He led her to her seat, and pulled his up next to hers. He changed hands as they took their seats next to each other again. “Yeah, I think that’s about the only thing Hollywood got right.” he admitted with a gentle smile. After all he didn’t want the direction the conversation was going in to frighten her. “That’s why we’ve changed, there are blood sucking leeches close enough to make us phase.” He said the word leeches with a touch of rage. They were the reason he was, what he had become. Anger began to fill him.
Jared felt an aura, it usually happened just before his body would quake and phase. He quickly looked over at his girlfriend before the shaking could begin. Jared could immediately feel at peace again, he could no longer hold the urge. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her hair, “I’m sorry,” he whispered in her ear. He was losing it, “I’m sorry I can’t be better for you.” he said trying to keep his embrace gentle.

Kim tried to picture Paul Ketwa. The name did sound familiar, but she knew she didn't know him well. There were few people that Kim actually felt comfortable talking to. So even if she had seen him every day, it wasn't likely that she actually knew much about him. Although now she knew she'd be watching for it. "I know who he is, but don't know him too well" She told him honestly. So there were three of them. She was glad that he wasn't alone, and also glad that it wasn't half the reservation. She couldn't imagine how this felt for him. Did he find it exciting or scary? She really wasn't sure how she felt about it either.
Kim was relieved to hear that he didn't feel sick anymore. That was the last thing she wanted for him. She wondered what parts of it he was still getting used to. Or maybe it was the whole idea. "How long have you been....getting used to the idea? Does it hurt you when you change like that?" She asked him, hoping he wasn't getting frustrated by all her questions. She was more talkative now than she usually was, even with him, but she knew she needed answers. She didn't have any idea how the two of them would deal with this. She did feel guilty though for her continuous questioning. "I'm sorry..." She found the need to say, looking down embarrassed at herself.
When Jared had confirmed that it was in fact the cold ones, vampires who were their enemies, she was glad that he had gotten her to a seat. She sat down, feeling complete fear at this point. She didn't think it safe to assume that vampires were also unlike they seemed in the movies. She got the feeling they weren't just really pale people who got bad sun burns. She lowered her head, taking in deep breaths trying to keep from hyperventilating at the thought of vampires running around at night. She was glad that Jared was here, otherwise she wouldnt feel safe at all anymore. "They're...nearby?"
She then felt his arms around her at the exact moment she needed him. When she felt like she was about to fall apart he was there, holding her, and gently kissing her hair. But he was apologizing? That wasn't right at all. She shook her head looking up at him. "Jared...I dont deserve you"
