Many milled about in the large expansive house or sat and talk strategy with one another as Kate moved among them looking for him. Her family had cast curious glances her way as she searched each room, but she offered no explanations to them and they never asked her what she was doing. He wasn’t inside. Kate exited through the back door and out into the garden as the sun set on another day. In a matter of weeks, though it was far more likely to be days, the Volturi would be upon them bringing with them whatever ends their small group would face. All of them would be in danger. Mortal danger for immortals; the irony would make Kate smile if she wasn’t so scared of losing her family and the friends she had found in the past few short days. In an abstract way she worried for Garrett as she though of those amoung their band of witness without gifts.
Today had been light relief after the past days filled with strain. Training with Zafrina was always more fun, but today more then most. Kate cast her mind back over the particular event of that afternoon that caused her to smile as she listened to the night creatures venture out from their day time hiding places. Her mind was drawn to him again. The tall, sandy haired nomad Garrett who had been so willing and almost challenging towards her as he reached out to touch her; he received a shock for his trouble. The memory brightened the smile to her pale features. Shocking Edward as a test for Bella hadn’t been nearly as satisfying. Knocking Garrett flat on his back had felt more playful then testing; though she’d given him a full dose of the charge just out of fun more then spite.
The nomad had arrived after them, as most had, yet he caught Kate’s attention in a way no one had in centuries; if ever. She adored all men, as she and all her sisters did by their very nature. Yet he held a different attraction for her that she couldn’t place. Now Kate actively sought to search him out. She merely wanted to know what had possessed him to try her gift after he had seen it’s affect on Edward. Perhaps there was another reason for her wanting to talk to him, but she wouldn’t admit that to herself or even think of it. There was a war coming and now was not the time she wanted to be distracted by matters of her heart.
The garden was almost empty as the darkness continued to reclaim the sky for the evening. The few that were still outside were not who she was looking for and she merely offered them smiles and polite hellos. She knew she couldn’t ask where he was or people would wonder why. Or worst still her sister would find out and like Tanya before her she would be teased for her search like it was a silly crush. Kate didn’t see him as she moved around the garden eventually coming to wander along the stream out there. Her mind wandered back to testing Bella and the protectiveness she has seen when she had shocked Edward, part of Kate longed for the love Bella must feel towards Edward. It was far deeper then the love of family which Kate herself felt whenever she looked at the other Denalis and even the Cullens.
The water relaxed her mind as she thought about and tried not to think about Garrett. The running water of the stream held none of the tension that the house was full of at this moment, but he wasn’t there and he wasn’t out here. Kate stood starring at the water but unseeing. She was thinking about Alaska and seeing the cabin, the snow and the mountain of her home. In every sense but the physical one Kate was back in Denali she could hear the soft falling of snow and feel the coolness of the mountain air. She was oblivious to everything else around her and for a moment forgot about her search for Garrett.

Most vampires walked in a completely smooth manner. They glided along, almost appearing as if they were floating at times. The gracefulness of their kind was one of the many features common to them all. Garrett however walked with a bit of a swagger to his step. His movements still demonstrated the elegance but with a bit of an added mischievious quality to it, especially since he usually wore a grin on his face.
Garrett had spent some time out in the woods, getting aquainted with the area, and finding it amazing how close it was that the Cullens were able to live to the humans. It was really only a couple miles that seperated them, not to even think about the time they spent immersed in the crowds, drinking in their scent but never their blood. It was so curious and intriguing to him, and to think there was an entire other coven that lived the same way. Astonishing.
The house had become crowded lately, the largest gathering of vampires that Garrett had seen. He was sure that one lone nomad wouldn't be missed for the few hours he was gone. He was near enough that he assumed he would hear if anything changed and the Cullens needed him there sooner than expected. Garrett headed down towards the water, still enjoying the nature of the Washington area. He had always been more the outdoorsy type, never staying cooped up inside too long. It wasn't as if he would catch a chill in the cold.
As he neared the stream he a smile appeared on his face as he saw her. Kate was alone, away from her sisters and the others, seemingly lost in the water. As he approached he couldn't contain the smile of pleasure that he'd have the opportunity to speak with her further. Garrett had become completely enthralled by Kate. Her beauty, those golden eyes of the lifestyle he found so interesting, and the strength she carried. The connection between them literally was electrifying. If he thought about it he could still feel the shock of her touch.
He walked up beside her stopping a few feet away joining her in looking at the stream. "Mind if I join you Kate?"

Lost in thought and reminiscing of times at home, Kate never heard his approach. When he spoke she jumped at the closeness of the voice and cursed herself for allowing herself to be distracted and for showing she had be caught of guard. Kate pulled her eyes and mind reluctantly away from the visions of home and turned to face the man she’d been looking everywhere for in the last hour. He stood a few feet from her and it gave her a chance to take his full form it as she hadn’t been able to do before. It would have been fair to look him over after her gift had knocked him unceremoniously on flat on his back earlier in the day.
Kate marveled at the nomad’s height she knew if they were stood closer beside one another that he would certainly tower above her, yet she was glad of the short distance between them allowing her to look at his face. His sand colored hair was pulled back in a pony tail, but a few strands loose by the sides of his face. She could see the scarlet of his eyes and the colors both scared and fascinated her. It had been so long since she had tasted human blood, but the taste was still a vivid memory to her. Kate wondered when he had last fed and a silently she apologized to his victim; her abstinence made her value human like a little more. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was as curious about her diet as she was of his eating habits. Most just believed them foolish; did he think the same?
In the still fading light Kate offered him a smile as she spoke, “Good evening Garrett.” She said, “I was - .” She cut herself short of admitting her search for him and instead answered his question. “Of course not, company is always welcome.” She said sounding more like Eleazer of Carlisle then she wanted to or meant to. Kate wanted to talk with him, she had tried to seek him out for that purpose yet now he stood near her she wasn’t sure what to say; been lost for words was unfamiliar ground to Kate. She smiled again and turned back to glance at the water once more though this time she didn’t see Alaska, only his fading reflection in the stream.

Garrett was surprised when Kate jumped upon noticing his presence. Usually vampires weren't so caught off guard that one was able to sneak up on another unless they were truly distracted. Garrett wondered what thoughts were in that pretty head of hers that kept her attention so focused. What he wouldn't give to have the Cullen boy's power right now, to dig deep into her mind, and know her every thought. But Garrett knew there were some people who's thoughts he'd never want to know. He wondered briefly if Edward was able to hear the thoughts of the animals he fed off of as well, or if it was only humans. He quickly pushed the thoughts aside as he put his complete focus back on the woman in front of him. Another powerful vampire, with the ability to bring Garrett to his knees (or more accurately put him flat on his back). Not a small task, but very impressive.
"Sorry, didnt mean to scare you" He apologized for the startle. "What's gotten your attention so focused?" He asked her, not afraid to voice his curiousity.
Garrett smiled as she told him that company was always welcome. It sounded a little more formal than he was hoping for but he'd just have to work to get her loosened up. This woman was a challenge, that was for sure, but he had always enjoyed a good challenge. He felt drawn by this woman and wasn't about to give up for any reason. "Great, cause I enjoy your company, you sure know how to get a man's attention" He said with a wink.
Garrett then tilted his head to the side slightly as he stared at her for a moment. She really was exquisitely beautiful, even among their kind. Her eyes only added to that beauty. "You have gorgeous eyes, I dont think I'd ever get used to seeing that color"

The water ran steady as Kate stared at it. She had been looking for Garrett for the past few hours and now he happened upon her, Kate couldn’t help wondering if he knew she had be searching for him. He spoke of her getting a man’s attention and she couldn’t help but smile; her gift certainly did that.
“I’m sorry for the show earlier, but you did bring it on yourself. Edward warned you.” She told him with a smile before turning back to the water the smile still hanging on her lips. She had given Garrett a good shock with her gift that afternoon, something she now wasn’t sure if she regretted it or was glad of it; would he still be looking for her had she not knocked him on his back?
As Garrett mentioned her eyes she was once again reminded that although he was one of her kind he did not share her diet. Kate’s head turned again to face him and this time her body followed so she was standing square onto him. She let her honey eyes stare into his eyes of crimson. “The eyes are not the only things to change with our abstinence.” Kate said slowly without looking away from him. She stared into his eyes so that he may be lost in hers rather then she in his, yet she found she couldn’t turn away from his face or his eyes. “Abstaining from the diet of human’s makes our bonds stronger. I doubt even Chelsea could break them.” She said explaining herself without been asked, it was the same speech she had heard Elezear speak and the one she had repeated. Over the last few days explaining or justifying her coven’s ways had become a habit, now it came without question.
Kate tried to look away from Garrett’s crimson eyes, but failed without shame. “Sorry, explaining myself has become a habit in the past days.” She said to him. A water vole moved along the flowing water, its slight sound gave her the opportunity to look away. “Thank you.” She said, “Though there is something too be said about your eyes too, Garrett." She said without looking at him, she didn’t need to look to be drawn in; in truth it wasn’t just his eyes that captivated her, it was all of him. “What do you think of my way of life?” She asked, she had to know what he was thinking and what he thought of her diet and living. A part of her found that more infuriating then all, to go from independent and free to need to know this mans every thought and idea.

"No apologies necessary dear. You're right, I did bring it on myself. You were just obliging my request" Garrett told her, having no ill feeling whatsoever in regards to the shock she had given him. He couldnt help but smile as she told him that Edward had warned him previously. "Yes he did, but not all coven folk are as tough as a nomad, couldnt be sure he wasn't just exaggerating." He said giving a her a wink, letting her know he meant no offense to her.
As she turned her body to face him completely he found himself staring into those golden eyes, marveling at their color and beauty once more. He looked at her a bit questioningly as she mentioned that the eyes were not the only thing to change in accordance with her diet. He was shocked to learn that the strength of their bonds also increased to the point where she didnt even think Chelsea could break them. "Really?" He said with almost disbelief. "That's certainly quite spectacular"
Garrett smiled as he heard her mention the habit of explaining herself that had formed the past few days. "I am glad to learn of your lifestyle" He said, not wanting her to feel as if she needed to defend her way of life but truly interested in learning about it from her. She then asked him what he thought of how she lived. "I find it fascinating. The way you resist the lure of humans around you, the way it changes your eyes and your bonds as you say. It all intrigues me to no end." He told her honestly. "What is it like, living like that? You go against your instinct to survive, yet you all seem so content with it"

Kate listened as he poked a little fun at Edward’s strength and she smiled. If her heart could have beat she was sure she would have blushed at his wink. Looking back up into his eyes Kate smiled, again. “I said I thought we could withstand Chelsea. I’m not sure as it is yet to be tested. She will, no doubt, come with the others and my theory will be tested.” Kate finally felt the weight of what they were all facing. She continued to stare at him as she shrugged a little, “Why did you join this fight Garrett?”
She let his question sink in for a while after he’d said it. She wondered herself sometimes how she lived so close to humans. How she coped with the temptation of their blood when even after all these years she could still taste it. A thought came to her then that would have had her blushing all over again had he had Edward’s gift and had blushing been in her grasp. Kate found herself wondering if she kissed him would she be able to taste his last kill; feel the exhilaration of the blood.
Quickly she pulled herself back to his question and pulled herself away from his eyes. Kate turned on her heel and walked a few steps away form him towards the woods, she waited till she heard him follow before she spoke. “It isn’t our instinct to kill another being human or animal; all that is just a means to satisfying the thirst. Once we realized our thirst can be just a sedated with animals we saw no reason to kill humans. We are no different to the humans who eat meat.” She said not stopping once she reached the edge of the tree line. “It doesn’t make it easier. I still remember the taste of human blood, and in moments of weakness I still thirst for it. My desire not to be a monster and the love I experience through abstinence keep me on my path.” She stopped and turned to face him once again. “Are you a strong enough to resist human blood, Garret? Been a nomad and all?” She teased with a smile.

“I hope for your sake that this rendezvous does not escalate to the point where your bonds need to be tested by her” Garret said, though he truly didn’t believe that they would all be able to escape this without a fight, and most likely their deaths. It wasn’t likely that the Volturi would hesitate for even a moment to listen to their case. But they could always hope for that. It was what they were here for, to try to give the Cullens even but a moment to explain themselves, not that it would probably matter to the Volturi.
Garrett looked at her for a moment as he wondered how to explain what he was doing here. It was a logical enough question but he wasn’t sure he had a reason for himself. “I met the Cullens years ago in some of their travels, very friendly folk, so when asked, I came for support. After seeing the little girl…” He said suddenly smiling at the thought of her. “I couldn’t leave without seeing how this played out, and offering any services I can. I’m also not very fond of our self proclaimed rulers, and think its about time someone stood up to the rule of the King” It was something he had done in his human life so it only seemed natural to do it now.
“But the thirst is for the human blood, if I am to walk by a dog and a human walking that dog, it is not the animal that draws me in.” Garrett said still confused as to how she could even think to go for the animal blood. “You must have very strong willpower to still thirst for human blood, yet ignore your urges” When she mentioned that it was her desire not to be a monster that made her abstain, he wondered if that was how she saw him. “Are you put off by me for not sharing your diet?” He then laughed as she asked if him being a nomad was strong enough to resist human blood. “Ohhh, if you pampered coven folk can do it, I’m sure I’m strong enough were I to give it a go. Maybe you’ll take me on one of these hunts of yours?”

Listening to Garrett speak Kate found herself enraptured by not just his story, but his very voice. He had the same melody like voice of her kind, the same handsome features that helped to draw in their prey and as Kate listened to him speak she knew she was been drawn in as a simple human would. Had she been concentrating on what was happening Kate would have cursed herself for been so easily snared when he seemed to be doing little to make it happen, but she wasn’t paying attention to herself; only to him. A smile spread across him lips as he mention Nessie and Kate returned the smile. She was a remarkable child and had everyone under her gentle, sweet spell even the strong nomad it appeared.
“The rule of the king?” Kate asked, “So you were a reveloutionary? How old are you Garrett?” Again the question was spurred by Kate’s need to find out all she could about this nomad who interested her so. She shared his dislike for the Volturi though her dislike she was sure came from a different place that his did. “The Volturi are more like ditators then kings, but I share your dislike for them.” She wouldn’t admit that her feelings ran as deep as hatred for their so called rulers and their ways. Even if her mother had broken a rule, it didn’t stop her hating them for their punishment of her. She wondered if her eyes burned with the anger she felt.
Listening to the Garrett as he continued to be confused by her choice of diet she gave him a wry smile at his interest in a hunt with them. “Could you keep up with us? Could you not be distracted if we wandered to close to a human walking his dog?” She asked stepping closer to him while both teasing him in her question and teasing him as her eyes continued to stare into his. Kate held a deep longing to run her hand, or even just a finger, down his chest as she spoke to him. “Of course I prefer elk or moose, if the season is right. A dog doesn’t satisfy the thirst, not enough blood.” She laughed as she openly joked with him.
Standing almost toe to toe with him Kate was forced to tilt her head up to continue to look at his face and into his eyes. Kate was sure if she was human her heart would be racing and she would be blushing, she was thankful for been a vampire right then. “You are welcome to hunt with me, Garrett. Though I don’t think I will accompany you on your outings.” She smiled, “I’d like to spend time with you.” Kate quickly caught her self and step back looking away from Garrett, “What I mean to say is I’d be happy to show you how we hunt and our way of life.” Now she knew she would be blushing as red as fresh blood if that were possible. She, who among her sisters, were the base of the succubus legends was shy and embarrassed around a man. Kate would have laughed is she could catch her breath to do anything other then stare at the ground.

Garrett watched as Kate smiled as soon as he brought up the Cullen boy’s newborn baby Nessie. Her face lit up into a smile, as his own had. He wondered if that was another part of the child’s gift. Maybe she was able to make people like her as soon as they met her. Or when she allowed them access to her own thoughts, speaking to them that way, maybe she was also implanting some likeability into their minds so that the mere thought of her would make them feel that fondness for her all over. These gifted vampires were still a wonder to him, even after encountering many over the years.
Garrett gave a sly grin as she asked about his age. “Old enough that this isn’t my first revolutionary war. I was an original Patriot of this country that you and the Cullens have taken up residence in. Only thing missing this time is some horses and a musket.” He joked with her. “And how old are you Kate? Or doesn’t a lady tell her age”
He nodded at her assessment of the Volturi as dictators. “I’m glad we both have the same dislike for them, I’d hate to have to watch you run across the battlefield” he gave a quick remark. To him the Volturi did seem like Kings. Maybe not the royalty of today, all figureheads and more custom than power, but when he fought, the Kings were dictators. Like the Volturi they couldn’t be reasoned with by the people they were supposed to protect.
He laughed as she asked if he could keep up with him when he had mentioned hunting with her. “I’m up for the challenge. It can’t be as shocking as what I’ve already gone through with you my dear” He smirked and gave her a wink. “Elk or Moose…don’t sound too appetizing but I’ll keep and open mind.”
Garrett smiled more sincerely as she told him he was welcome to join her though she would not be joining him. He understood. Although he may not have understood her lifestyle choices yet, he did respect them and understood her wishes to stay away from human feedings. “I would like to join you, and I’d like to spend time with you too” He told her. Garrett started leaning down. He wanted more than anything in this moment to kiss her. She might hit him and send him flying yards away, or shock him onto his back, but he was impulsive and it was what he was feeling in the moment.
Unfortunately for him he was too slow in deciding and right as he began moving in closer she took a step back and looked away, missing what he was about to do. He smiled at the back of her head shaking his head lightly, more at himself than her. He missed his moment, but as he watched the appearingly shy vampiric woman before him, he knew it wouldn’t be the last moment he’d have to try. He would win her over.

Kate smiled as Garrett spoke of them taking up in the residence in a country he spoke of almost as if it was his own, her smile was polite and she wondered if he was serious or merely teasing. Kate’s smile turned sly to reflect Garrett’s own as he commented on his age. “I’m sure, if you would feel more comfortable, we could round you up some horses and I’m sure someone in this town has a gun.” She said sarcastically, but not rudely she merely wanted to make Garrett smile.
“My sisters and I are far older then your youthful years.” She smiled not giving a number to an age she’d long since stopped counting. “Besides I think true age is irrelative to our kind. I will say that I’ve lived through many wars and eras.” Kate remembered wars in many lands fought many ways, but she wasn’t sure of his reaction to her age. Garrett brought forth in her feelings of nervousness and uncertainty that she hadn’t felt in centuries; Kate was normally so sure of herself.
Kate knew she would ever cross the battlefield to side with the Volturi in this or any battle. She would stand firm with her family and friends and stand against the self proclaimed rulers of their race. “That Volturi and my family have a long history and like all where they are concerned; none of it is good.” Kate said hearing the bitterness edge into her voice, even after all the years since her mother’s death Kate still felt the sadness and anger of the event as it had happened moments before. “But I am glad to know we will be on the same side, I would hate to shock you again.” She smiled trying to release the tension her body was holding. Kate was been honest, with her growing feelings Kate wouldn’t want Garrett anywhere else.
Kate could feel the burn of thirst in her throat and was in need of a satisfying hunt, the idea of Garrett been with her only added to the excitement she felt. She smiled at his laughter, “I promise not to use my gift against you while we hunt together. Though I was impressed by willingness to test me.” She told him honestly watching his smirk and wink as he spoke of her choice in game. “It was that for me in the beginning, but now they have their draw. You’ll see” She said Kate wanted to lean touch and touch him, to pull him towards her and forest, but she wondered if he’d let her touch him or would be nervous of her gift.
It was an unusual step for a vampire to turn to the vegetarian way of life, and Kate understood it was a very big step. For that she was impressed that Garrett was willing to try such a drastic change, even if he didn’t take to her diet Kate knew she would always be impressed. When he admitted he would like to spend time with her too Kate felt the smile rush to her lips, his words over ruled all her logical thoughts about been their for the Cullen’s. Kate was glad of the chance to look into the woods in search of prey, she knew had she stayed looking at him she would have said something or done something that should be left till their time was truly theirs. “We should go. I need to hunt and show you how we do it.” She said throwing her smile over her shoulder. Kate noticed her was closer to her, leaning towards her, she knew what it meant.
He wanted to kiss her, Kate was almost certain of it. It didn’t scare or worry her, what did those things to her was that Kate wanted him to kiss her. As she looked back ahead of her she made up her mind what to do and quickly turned back to face him. “Garrett.” She said huskily stepping towards him and closing the minimal gap, her eyes were dark now not just from thirst but from wanting to touch him and be touched.

Garrett laughed at her comments of finding some horses and a gun for him should he choose, glad that the woman could speak so lightheartedly with him, even in a time of approaching turmoil. "Unfortunately out adversary isn't that easy to take down, but I appreciate the offer...though wouldn't the horses make some of your hungry?" He said hoping it wouldnt offend her.
"Been awhile since I've been called youthful...no matter your years, you've aged gracefully" He told her nodding in agreement as she stated how age was irrelative for their kind. He would have thought that perhaps it was her age that contributed to her choice of food, but then those Cullens seemed to mostly be younger than him, so he ruled that out.
"Getting shocked by you wouldn't be so bad, but I am also glad we're on the same side" He agreed, but was curious about the history she spoke of with the Volturi. He wondered if she was like Carlisle who had stayed with them for a time. He had thought that he had heard rumors about the other one from her family, the male Eleazar having been a part of the guard...it would have made him more wary of the family had she not been so set against them now as she spoke. "If its not too intrusive, may I ask what happened with them and your family before? Did you all live there? "
He smiled as she told him she was impressed by his willingness to test out her gift. "It would have been a missed opportunity to not experience it. I think you'll see there's not much that I'm not willing to try at least once. " He said knowing he was showing that was true also through his willingness to try the animal blood. He liked seeing her smile as he admitted wanting to spend time with her as well, seeing the desired reaction from her.
Garrett had been so close to kissing her, and knew he would have had she not turned away. He was closer to her when she turned back, and he was sure it looked a bit odd. He watched her turn back to him and close the gap saying his name. He knew he wouldn't pass up a second opportunity. He wasn't sure if kissing her would send another shock through him. It could knock him to the ground unable to move, but he still was going to at least try it once. He leaned down and gently kissed her.

He was right about the Volturi, they were hard to kill, but Kate knew she would try along side her family and friends. Beside Garrett she would fight. As he asked if the horse would make her hungry she laughed and fell into a relaxed smile, “I prefer elk, or bear. Horses are too domesticated for my taste, perhaps they will be more to your liking because of your long history with them?” She suggested with a cheeky grin and smile.
Her years were vast, she suspected a lot greater then his though with the feelings he gave her she felt as unfocused as a newborn. She smiled, “Thank you, though the years haven’t withered you either.” she said wanting to reach out and touch his hair or his cheek in clarification of the compliment she was giving him, but she didn’t. Her hands remained at her sides and she merely looked at him.
Her gift was, luckily, something she could turn on and off though that act had taken years of concentration and hard work. Now she was glad that if she chose to touch him that she wouldn’t knock him back. As he question her family’s history with the Volturi Kate shrugged, “Our clans have history. A broken rule and a punishment so severe that I can still feel its wounds now after centuries.” She said remembering the pain of losing her ‘mother’ the actions which lead up to it and the centuries of sadness after. “They killed one of our family, and they wont kill another without a damn good fight.” She said feeling the flames of battle burn within. There was also pain in her words and voice, but she felt no shame in her emotions.
Her gift could knock even the toughest Cullen on his back, so she knew it would have the same effect on Garrett. “Perhaps I can share my gift with you somewhere private, so as to save face but give you the experience.” She offered with a light laugh to spare his blushes. Seeing his willingness to try animal blood gave her hope for the out come of their meeting and she smiled brightly to hear he to wanted to spend time with her.
When she turned back to face him he was closer. Kate’s body and mind moved on instinct closing the gap and gasping his name, she felt drawn to him. When his lips touched hers it wasn’t her gift that gave a shock but the tingle of his lips to hers. It was a pleasant tingle and one she welcomed. Reaching up with her arms Kate encircled his neck pulling him to her and pushing her body to his.
After a few moments she pulled back without releasing her arms from his neck. She smiled up at him liking the feel of his body against hers and the lingering tingle of the kiss. “I think that was my turn to be shocked.” She smiled.
