{Late BD}
It was a good day for Jack so far; a day without paperwork. He had been out on the roads around La Push that morning, stopped a couple of kids – they did love to speed around there, though he couldn’t really blame them for it. Then back to the station, lunch and now a chance to show his favourite rookie just how to wield a weapon. Not that she hadn’t been trained before, but Jack could do it better, with all his experience.
He looked around with a playful grin on his face as he stepped into the shooting range, his grey greatcoat swaying around his calves as he stopped in the doorway to survey the equipment. It wasn’t exactly the best, but he guessed you didn’t really need more than a couple of paper targets and guns. As he glanced around he realised that the little lady firecracker hadn’t arrived yet. no matter, he could play on his own for a little while – he had plenty experience of that too. He stood before the loose frame structure that stood for the safety barrier and pulled his standard issue gun from the holster at his waist. He stood square on to the target in the prescribed manner, ignoring the noise blocking headphones that lay behind him. He used both his hands to ease the bullet out of the barrel steadily and watched as it lodged itself snugly within the centre of the target.
“Too easy…” he commented to himself, though there was a degree of self-satisfaction to hi stone. He pursed his lips a little and twisted them to the side, turning so his back was to the targets. Counting to three in his head, he whirled around and cross fired to the diagonal target, and then the one closest. He laughed a little to himself; that was better, but it would be much more fun if they moved! He did the ‘exercise’ (though if Charlie ever saw him do it, he would most likely get suspended) a few times over, always getting into the right section of the targets.
He turned, placing the gun back in his holster, after a few short minutes, his attention span shot. He wanted someone to play with! “Ohhh, My-yaaaa!” he called in his singsong voice, taking a few steps to pick up the safety goggles and headphones for the two of them while they worked.

Mya bounded into the police station. She was still as excited about her job as the day she had started. She absolutely loved it here. The job was great, her coworkers were great, her partner, he ended up being more than she expected to find. It was perfect. Today she was excited about meeting up with Jack who told her he'd help her with her target practice. She was always willing to take pointers from more experienced officers but was hardly lacking in her own abilities.
Mya left her uniform blue shirt at her desk, knowing the button down cotton material would only get in her way if she could convince Jack to show her a few of his tricks. She had on a dark navy tanktop that tucked into the standard issue police pants. She had her hair pulled back so it would be out of her face and with her weapon in its holster on her hip, she was ready to go.
As soon as Mya walked into the shooting range she could hear Jack's singsong voice calling out to her. She couldnt help but laughing as she headed over to him. "Miss me already Jack boy? Didn't mean to keep you waiting"

Jack whirled around at the sound of Mya’s distinctive bed-me voice; one of the first things to pique his attention on that marvellous night out they had for her joining the force. Mm, good night, good night. Not that it would happen again, but what the hell, he wasn’t going to forget about it, but neither did it mean anything more than a good night out. A bright grin covered his face, flashing his teeth boldly in his colleague’s direction and he extended an arm, placing it around her shoulders as she approached. He turned and walked with her over to the shooting frames.
“Always, Rookie,” he quipped, having never stopped calling her by her old status. It wasn’t that he thought she wasn’t good enough to be considered a full officer, he just liked to tease and he always filled the word with such affection – it had almost become a pet name. “Well you know I get bored when I have to play with myself for too long… And with a loaded weapon too!”
He allowed a smirk to squash his grin and laughed at his own innuendo; life was too short not to take advantage of these situations. Reaching the shooting frames, he whirled Mya around to face him and reached over her to take a pair of noise-deadening headphones that he had prepared for them earlier. He then placed them carefully over Mya’s ears, holding one side up so that he could speak to her. “Let’s see what you can do.”
He winked at her and stepped back, folding his arms across his chest.

Mya grinned as she looked up at Jack who had put his arm around her walking her to the shooting frames telling her how he always missed her. She and Jack had become pretty good friends. There was that drunken night soon after they met where they had been more than friendly with each other, but luckily that didn't do anything to deter their friendship. Neither expected anything out of it besides enjoying themselves for a night. In a way it almost made Mya understand him a little better. An instant way to bond with your colleague. Not that she'd use that tactic on all her coworkers, but in this case it had worked well.
Mya laughed as Jack gave his innuendo about playing alone with his loaded weapon. She really appreciated his humor, even if some would disagree about its appropriateness for the workplace. "Yeah, I know you always like it better when you can get someone to cock your weapon for you"
With a cheeky grin at him she allowed herself to be whirled around to face him as he placed the headphones on her. As she turned around she put on the pair of goggles and withdrew her weapon from its holster on her hip. She looked over her shoulder to see his wink then tuned back to the target. She held up her gun, aiming it, and squeezed the trigger. The bullet finding its way about an inch off of the center. It wasn't exactly on center but was in the first zone outside of the bullseye.

Jack’s grin widened, a purely self-indulgent look coming upon his face as his eyebrow lifted and his brain got to work with all the innuendos that could be bandied forth between them. It wasn’t often that he came across a woman with quite such an appreciation of his humour, which could be both sexual and sexist, though it was always equally balanced to favour both genders – no one could accuse Jack Harkness of being anything but joyous of all of creation. Sure, he could wheedle his way into many women’s hearts with his trade smile and his frank honesty and appreciation, but when it came to basic friendship he was held at somewhat of a distance. That didn’t only apply to women, though, his open persuasion saw Don holding himself back, occasionally, though Jack knew that his open flirtation didn’t help matters there – but how was he supposed to resist the big man’s buttons?
“And you would know that, wouldn’t you, Rookie?” he chuckled to himself, not taking his own comment seriously. Though their little fling was not something of consequence to either of them, bringing it up in jest was one of his favourite ways to tease the girl, although he never did this with Don around, he wasn’t that insensitive.
He watched from his position a few feet back from Mya, not flinching at the loud sound the gun let off in the enclosed space, and whistled in an impressed manner as she hit the central zone. He laughed a little and approached her again after making sure she had the gun steady and in control once more. “Sharp shooting, kid,” he commented, now stood directly behind her to see from what angle she was aiming at. “Hmm… not many perps going to just stand there in front of you while you take a shot at them… How about we make things a little more interesting?”
He turned his head, his cheek now resting against the side of her head as he watched everything from her point of view. He knew he was pushing it a little now, there were set rules to these places, but what was the point if it didn’t mimic real life circumstance? Plus, his games were always more fun.

Mya’s mind raced through all the dirty respsonses she could have given him to keep their flirtatious innuendos for the rest of the day, but she knew if she kept it up now, they probably never would have actually got down to business and gotten in any shooting practice at all. Mya never turned down an opportunity to fine tune her skills. She may be one of the younger officers but she was determined to be a good one. Maybe she’d even get her shield soon. So instead she just grinned at his remark about her knowing it and gave a slight shrug. It was true she knew intimately all about his loaded weapon.
As Mya took a look at the target in front of her she lowered her weapon, turning to see Jack’s response to it and any pointers he might have started out with. She smiled seeing that he looked impressed by her shot. He wasn’t the type to berate you if you weren’t perfect, he’d encourage what you did right, not focus on the inch off that she was. It helped her confidence and she knew he was a good teacher, whether he knew it or not.
She raised an eyebrow as he mentioned making it more interesting that not many perps would just stand still as she shot. She wondered what he was getting at. “What, is there a setting that makes it move in a line or somethin’? “ She asked him, then looking forward at the targets again as he pressed his cheek up against the side of her head, she couldn’t help but grin, knowing whatever he had in mind would be good. “Show me what to do”

Jack grinned at the young officer, his bright expression not faltering even a fraction as he thought up the intricacies of the new and slightly controversial exercise that they could do. He laughed a little, the low chuckle vibrating against her body as he rested there. “Maybe in Seattle or somewhere, short stuff, but not in our humble range. We mostly just have sandbags and pieces of paper…”
He clicked his tongue a little through his teeth, his lips pursing as he tried to work out the angles and distances. Suddenly, as everything pulled together, an exercise much like the one that he had been playing through earlier, he pulled the young woman’s shoulders back, stepping forward to take her place. Facing her, he stood in an at-ease position, his legs slightly parted, his back to the targets and an amused grin dimpling his cheeks. He pulled his own gun from his hip and held it barrel down, a habit from long-standing gun training.
“Okay, here’s what we’re going to assume,” he began, his voice taking on a semi-whimsical nature as he set the scene. “You’re out at night, it’s dark. You’re in unfamiliar territory, separated from your partner and… kaboom! It all goes off. You whirl,” he turned to face the targets, moving slowly to show her the game. “But only see torchlight from the far gunman,” he nodded at the target that was furthest away from them. “Aim. Then light comes from directly ahead of you, so move and shoot, turn and fire. Got it?”
Keeping his gun facing the target range, he twisted to look at the kid. He then went through the motions again, this time at full speed, firing his two shots within split seconds of each other and hitting relatively close to the centre. He raised his eyebrows and smiled at Mya as he finished. “What do you think; ready for the big boys’ games?”

Mya laughed as Jack told her that their humble shooting range didn’t have anything more than sandbags or pieces of paper. She hadn’t thought that it did, but she wondered what he meant then by hitting a moving target. She looked at him with curiosity tilting her head to the side slightly with interest. She had a feeling from the look on his face that whatever he was going to show her wasn’t the type of thing that was typically covered in training, and she was looking forward to it. Scenarios they gave in classes and drills that they ran didn’t always cover what happened in the field.
Mya allowed Jack to move her and take her place in front of the targets. She studied his relaxed body positioning as he pulled out his own gun. She listened attentively to his description of the scene they were practicing for then watched as he spun and shot at the two targets. “That was awesome!” She said excited to practice his unorthodox methods. She grinned back at him as he asked if she was ready for the big boys games. “Oh I’m ready!”
She stepped up taking his place. She started facing him as he had done, then turned, at about half the speed he had done, so she could get the feel for it her first time around, then shot at the first target and then the second. She smiled as she hit them both.

Jack laughed with Mya’s enthusiasm for the little show he put on for her, feeling a little proud that he had managed to impress her. To be honest he had a lot of practice on the shooting range, it was just something that he enjoyed to do, but it wasn’t something he took lightly in the field. No, here in these four walls they could have some fun, let off a little steam and practice their skills, but it was no laughing matter when you were aiming for someone’s shoulder.
“And that, young padawan, is how you do it,” he bowed a little, putting the safety back on his gun without even thinking about it before he shoved it back into the holster. He bowed his head and gestured towards the shooting frames with a flourish – ever the showman. He took up his stance a few metres away from, his feet parted slightly and his arms crossed over his upper chest as he watched carefully how she moved, and how that affected her grasp and control of the firearm. As the second shot rang out, Jack’s piercing blue eyes darted from one target to the other and he let out a low whistle through his teeth, again impressed by the young woman’s efforts.
“So that’s the method, and great work on that, by the way,” he told her, his tone both impressed and intrigued as he wondered what she could really do. He raised an eyebrow, hoping he wasn’t about to push her too far. “But if you go at that speed, you’d be taken out by ‘bad guy number 1’ before you’ve gotten the barrel around and the gun retargeted. So how about you try that again with a bit more snap?”

Mya laughed as he called her a young padawan after giving his demonstration. “Thank you for your knowledge Master Obi-Jack” She said giving him a semi bow as she impersonated the Star Wars franchise. It wasn’t long before Mya had mimicked the motions herself and hit the target, though at a slower speed than Jack had, going more for precision of the technique the first time around before using it at a normal pace.
Mya smiled at Jack as he complimented her on her work. “Thanks I had a great teacher” She said, nudging him lightly with her elbow. She nodded as she listened to him comment on her slowness and suggest she try it with more snap. “Okay I can do that”
Mya turned, getting ready to try the move again. She put her head down as she took a deep breath, getting herself into the mindset of the scenario he had painted for her with two targets behind her, both with guns pointed at her, it was her or them.
Mya began the move, the first shot going off with the twist, hitting the target but as she turned to hit the second target, her ankle turned to the side, giving way underneath her at the moment her finger hit the trigger. Her balance was off. Her aim hadn’t been perfected, and the sound of the gunshot was resounding in the shooting range as Mya fell to the ground, landing hardly on her back.
Mya looked up, with fear in her eyes as she saw the direction the gun was pointed in. It was directly at Jack. Her mouth fell open in shock and she prayed it had hit the ceiling and not him.

Jack chuckled a little at Mya’s comeback to his Star Wars themed instruction. She was definitely one of the cool kids, maybe not one of the princess parade back in normal high school, but he thought she was great and that made her cool to him. He grinned a little as she complimented his teaching after hitting the targets at a slower pace and he winked at her in an exaggerated fashion. He ran one of his forefingers up and down his chest, blue eyes shining. “This man,” he said, his voice full of bravado. “Built for so much more than the obvious.”
As the young woman took her stance back up in front of the targets, Jack stood in his customary stance as he watched Mya take to the shooting floor once more, his feet slightly parted, his arms crossed across his chest and a curious expression on his face. The kid was good, he had to give her that – not many people could nail both targets on the first round, which was one of the reasons that he had decided to challenge her to speed up the exercise. Oh he knew that he was being a bit reckless, but he liked to live on that side of life. A small smile appeared on his face as he watched the young woman in front of him set to work once more, this time moving with a speed more comparable to his own when doing the same thing. At first it seemed to be going well, she squared herself to the first target with admirable ease, whilst keeping the second within striking distance. However, that is when things started to go pear shaped.
“Ooph,” before he could react properly, the errant bullet came speeding towards him and shattered into his shoulder. The hit side of his body got thrown backward with the thrust as Jack’s face scrunched up in shock and pain, sending him off balance and twisting on to the concrete ground. “Argh.”
With a heaving effort and a yelling cry that betrayed it as such, he pushed himself up and on to his back, allowing himself to fall there. He had already seen that he was bleeding quite profusely, his light blue shirt already becoming saturated with the blood that was emerging from the wound. He let out another groan of displeasure as he brought up his good arm and pressed it against the sticky, oozing wound, knowing that he needed something more to staunch the flow of blood, but he didn’t have the capacity to do it.

Mya laughed as Jack complimented his teaching skills, saying how he was built for more than the obvious. “So I see. I can vouch for that if you ever need a reference” She told him. She always had a good time with Jack, whether here at the shooting range, or out for a couple drinks after work, or just chatting it up by the office coffee pot.
Mya had been a little more nervous with the faster exercises, but her nervousness only stemmed from wanting to show Jack she could do it. There was also excitement in there, knowing she was learning something new that while appearing to be just fancy shooting actually had some practical uses as well. None of her nervous energy however had prepared her for the twisting of her ankle in just the wrong way at the wrong time to throw off her balance.
From her spot on the floor Mya could see Jack’s face reacting and knew that the bullet had connected with him. Her eyes were wide with the fear and horror of the realization of what she had done to a friend and fellow officer. She began scanning his body looking for blood and the spot she hit, hoping the bullet just grazed him and hadn’t hit any vital organs.
By the time Mya had moved up from her back to her knees, Jack was down on the ground, twisting in pain. She quickly moved over to his side. Tears had already sprung to her eyes as she looked down in a guilty shock. She could see the blood pouring out of him and saw him attempting to compress his own wound to stop the bleeding. She immediately placed her hands over where his had been. “Jack…I…I’m so sorry…I didn’t…I sorry…” She repeated over and over again. She looked around panicked and wishing there was someone else in the gallery.
“Someone help!” She yelled out, not stopping to realize that the shooting gallery probably had increased soundproofing to keep the sound of the shots from traveling too far outside the building. She kept one hand pressed against the wound, still profusely bleeding despite her efforts and got out her cell phone. “Jack I’m so sorry…please be okay…”

One of Jack’s expressive eyebrows quirked slightly and his mouth stretched into a smile, amused by the playful and slight harmless flirtation that passed between them. He was glad that no awkwardness had ensued between the two of them since she and Don had gotten together. It was just a shame that the big guy hadn’t dealt with their brief fling nearly as well. He knew that Don wasn’t one for fluidity in relationships, though, and he was sure that he would get over it. Jack just hoped it would be soon. He nodded his head once and grinned at her. “Duly noted,” he announced. “I’ll be sure to hit you up some time…”
It was only a few short seconds later that everything changed in the shooting range. Jack had watched with a bubbling admiration as the girl had let herself go at a commendable speed, his lips only having time to part ever so slightly before the bullet made contact with the shoulder. Then the world descended into pain and an urgent need to not die. His world fell inwards and as he forced himself on to his back he couldn’t even see the horrified expression on his colleague’s face. The first moment that he really remembered about her was when he felt the pressure of her hand covering the wound when his own lost the energy to do so. He directed his darkened blue eyes up at her and gave her something between a smile and a grimace.
“It’s just… a scratch,” he tried to reassure her, though the effect was probably opposite owing to the strange exhausted tone to his voice. He couldn’t remember whether it had been seconds or minutes, or maybe even an hour since he was shot. It was impossible to tell. He managed to clumsily lift a hand and pressed it on top of her own, not realising that it was bloodied up from his own attempts at stopping the bleeding.
His eyes slammed shut as she yelled for help, the odd quality of the sound in the room making it sound as though the words were being screamed into his skull. Maybe he banged his head on the way down, or maybe something in him realised that there was another thing he had to do to help his own well being. His hand lifted again, clutching at her forearm to get attention. “I’m a – a – haem… haemo.. phh…” he swallowed and frowned at his lack of control, somewhere at the back of his mind realising that this probably meant that he had bled enough now to make himself silly. “I bleed.”

It hadn't taken long for the mood in the shooting range to drastically change. One minute they were joking, harmlessly flirting, and studying their craft and the next there was panic, fear, pain and sorrow. She was feeling an immense amount of guilt. She hadn't meant to hurt him, and she couldn't even say she was being careless. Yes maybe they shouldn't have been practicing moves like this in a closed shooting range but she knew what she was doing, it had just been one wrong step that happened as her finger was on the trigger.
Watching Jack fall to the ground with the realization that he had been hit tore Mya apart. She didn't know how she'd live with herself if he didnt make it. He had to, there was no question about it. She swallowed hard as she applied pressure to the wound, knowing at least a bit about first aid from her EMT certification, though the adrenaline and fear of the moment was clouding her more advanced skills. She heard him say it was a scratch but knew he was just trying to make her feel better. However even his voice betrayed him, as she could hear the pain and weakness to it. "I'm so sorry" She repeated again, not able to say anything else at the moment. As his hand made its way on top of hers , she felt the blood that was already on it and let a tear fall down her cheek.
She yelled for help hoping someone was nearby. She was looking around frantically for someone when she felt his hand grab onto her arm to get attention. She looked down at him and realized what he was saying. He couldn't clot, that was why he was losing so much blood. "Oh god...Jack, you're gonna be okay...I'm going to get you an ambulance" She told him, reaching into her pocket with a shaking hand and getting out her cell phone to call 911.
