{Timeline: Twilight}
Bella almost bit through her lip with nerves as she walked slowly towards biology. Biology and gym! Could it get any worse? Not that she had always held biology in such low regard; no, that was all Edward Cullen’s doing. Now here he was back after weeks with no explanation, and Bella found that his presence was just as disruptive as his absence. It seemed that no matter whether he was there or not, she could not stop herself from seeing him out. That day she had promised herself that if he looked as… murderous… as he had looked in that first biology lesson, then she would just not go. Already, though, it was a promise she could see herself breaking. She didn’t know what it was yet, but even despite the abject hate that she remembered in his eyes, she still found herself drown to him.
She groaned a little to herself as the building and her biology classroom came into view, but despite her mental complaints, her legs kept driving her forward. A combination of apprehension and excitement assaulted her as she pushed open the door and peered into the recesses of the room. She couldn’t stop her mouth from falling open a little as she surveyed him sat in his little bubble of personal space as if nothing had happened. She made a face as the thought occurred. Nothing has happened, Bella, she reprimanded herself. It’s probably all in my head.
However, even as she sat down beside him, heart rate a little uneven with nerves, she still couldn’t resolve that fact. Too much added up to the conclusion that it was something about her personally that made him disappear for it to all be a coincidence. Still, if he was back then she wouldn’t try to interfere, she wouldn’t put him through any unnecessary discomfort. Thus, she took her seat next to him without a word. She couldn’t stop herself from glancing at his perfect features, but he kept her pale face expressionless. She would be a blank canvas, easy to ignore. And for the final step in her plan, she allowed her long tresses of brown hair to fall between them, with the intention of blocking off the temptation to stare.

Had he been human, Edward would have been fidgeting in his seat as he waited for Bella’s arrival. He was apprehensive about being here. Alice said that she was pretty sure that nothing would happen. That he wouldn’t kill anyone today. But she wasn’t completely sure, and either was he. He had seen the dread on is siblings faces as they thought about the possibility that they’d have to uproot the family and move to another location. He didn’t want to put his family through that, even though Carlisle had told him that they’d understand.
Edward had gorged himself on blood the night before, wanting to make this day go as easily as possible, but the blood of animals wasn’t nearly enough to dull her scent. He picked it up easily as soon as she reached the doorway. He took a deep breath, filling his lungs with air now so that he’d have to breath less when she was closer. Her scent was already intoxicating. The venom scorching his throat but he fought through the discomfort, watching her approach the desk.
Edward watched her sit down silently, glance at him without saying a word then lower her head, her hair falling between them. He knew it only made sense for her not to say anything, she was probably scared after last time, as she well should be, but he had to try to make it through this class.
“Hello…” He said, keeping his voice soft, and as unthreatening as possible. “My name is Edward Cullen. I didn’t have a chance to introduce myself last week” He told her, though he knew already that she knew his name, and had been told about him from Jessica if not others. “You must be Bella Swan” He said, having heard her on that first day correcting so many others that she preferred Bella to Isabella.

The minute that Edward’s soft, musical voice penetrated the barrier of her strawberry scented hair, Bella’s resolve was lost. She suddenly doubted everything that she had come to assume over the last few days, wondering if her mind had made up the antagonism between herself and Edward that first day they met – the last time they saw each other. She shifted her head a little to flick the long sheet of brown hair over her shoulder so that she could see the boy’s expression properly.
“Oh – uh - ” she began, struggling over words as nothing conventional to say popped into her head, distracted as she was by the seeming one-eighty that he had taken since their last class together and also by his perpetual good looks. Even though the rest of the class were looking like varying degrees of drowned rats due to the snow (which had thankfully just turned to rain), Edward somehow looked like he had just stepped out of a catalogue. As she continued to stare (rather rudely) into his flawless face, she could feel herself being more drawn in to the openness of his expression, despite his location at the very edge of the desk. Could it be possible that she did make it all up? She remembered Mike commenting how he had never seen Edward act that rude before, but maybe it was something else. Was it possible that she was just being egotistical in thinking that his disappearance and murderously bad mood were because of her mere presence?
“H-how do you know my name?” she stammered eventually, finally freeing herself from the conundrum by deciding that she just didn’t know. Thankfully her brain had retained what the impossibly good looking boy had said to her and cottoned on to a new puzzle of how he knew to call her ‘Bella’ rather than ‘Isabella’. It was something, at least.

Talking had been a mistake. At least talking that much at once. He had almost completely emptied his lungs by that simple sentence, probably because he was focused so much on sounding calm and being in control that he lost control of how much air he was allowing himself to use to speak. He took another breath just as she flicked her hair over her shoulder, sending another wave of his scent straight through his nostrilsl and enticing his ever desire. He knew he had to be able to take in her scent if he was going to make it through all class with her.
Edward watched the difficulty she had in starting to say something, knowing that with the way he had treated her the first time they had met, this was expected. He was acting differently, but he was trying to act normal. He watched as she just stared at him and he looked back at her, still trying to get into that mind that refused him entrance the first time they met, but still not hearing even a whispered thought from inside her brain, though he could pick out anyone else in the class and know what they were thinking about.
He gave her a smile as she asked how he knew her name, trying to look as friendly as possible, thinking he had failed initially at that task. "Everyone in town knows your name. We knew you were coming, people were waiting for you"

Bella balked a little at Edward’s comment about how people were waiting for her to arrive at Forks. She might have known really, well, she probably did know given that she had to tell everyone and their mothers that she was a ‘Bella’ and not an ‘Isabella’. Besides, that still didn’t answer her question. She hadn’t spoken to the Cullens at all and Edward had only got back today and he didn’t speak to any of the other kids. Therefore, the question remained, how did he know to call her ‘Bella’?
“Yeah,” she said, her tone still soft and shy as blood flooded her almost translucently pale cheeks in response to challenging his response. “But I thought Charlie had been telling everyone that I was called ‘Isabella’, how’d you know to call me ‘Bella’?” She winced internally and lost eye contact with him as she realised how dumb the question sounded out of her head. He’d probably heard someone in the corridors or something… but still, she was curious, and she seriously doubted that she was still corridor-talk after so many days.
She sighed a little as she remembered Edward’s last comment once more and raked some of the thick brown hair out of her way. She really wished they wouldn’t be so expectant of her as the new girl and she really wished that her dad hadn’t been talking about her to the whole of Forks. She bent her head in a familiarly retiring manner as the biology teacher began to announce the task and then returned her gaze to Edward, looking up at him as she realised that they would have to work as lab partners for the whole hour. A prospect that both frightened her and excited her.

Edward fought to keep his expression from turning into a frown as she explained to him the issue that had her puzzled. Him knowing her name, wasn't what surprised her. The town had been talking about her arrival before she had gotten there. But him knowing to call her Bella instead of Isabella was his mistake. She had needed to correct the others, something he had heard countless times over in the her conversations with the other students that first day. But he hadn't introduced himself that day, she had never told him to call her Bella, that she liked that better. He had slipped up. He knew it was a mistake, and one that she had astutely picked up on. It was a bit surprising to him that she had picked up on this in the midst of the fear he assumed he had caused in her by his behavior on that first day.
Edward turned his head away, not answering her question of how he knew. He didnt have an appropriate answer for that, not able to just tell her that he was a mind reader and heard it several times before. But he also was running low on air for his lungs. Something that with this lab, seeing that they'd need to be working together, he knew they'd need. As Mr. Banner began explaining their assignment, he leaned away from Bella, but didnt move his seat, and turned his head to the side. Taking in a breath through his mouth, in an attempt to get less of her scent, still was excruciating and tempting. He could practically taste her through the air alone. The venom searing the back of his throat, and fighting against his willpower. He half expected to see Alice burst through the door and get him out of there before he acted but when he didnt see his sister he took it as a sign that he had more control than he thought. He could make it through this hour.
Realizing that they were being told to start the assignment he turned to Bella who in turn was now looking at him, with the microscope between them. "Ladies first" He offered her gently, then after a slight pause. "Or I could go first if you'd rather"

(OOC: Again, doing this at work with no copy of the book, so I might make small edits later… I couldn’t remember which slide she looks at first )
Bella’s curiosity was piqued as she caught Edward turning his head away at her enquiry. Maybe it was a little odd for her to notice something so small when other aspects of his behaviour were overwhelmingly obvious – such as his distaste for her on that first day – but she seemed to be hyper-aware of him, for reasons unknown. It was quite possible that it was the mystery and the fact that he looked just like he had walked out of a catalogue helped. She tried to put the suspicious thoughts from her head, not even knowing what it could mean if he had found out something so basic about her.
As she listened to the biology teacher, once more retreated into shy, retiring shell, she couldn’t stop herself from glancing over at her lab partner, taking in the way that he was sitting, how tense he seemed. Was it possible that he wasn’t happy (or at least tolerant) of her sitting next to him? She bit her lip lightly, trying to dismiss all her raging thoughts so that she could hear what the assignment actually was.
Once all the equipment was doled out and their task was adequately explained to them, a part of Bella’s nervousness subsided as she realised that she had done this experiment before. At least if he didn’t like her for whatever reason, she could prove that she was a good lab partner – and she was a little competitive too. She glanced over at Edward with doe eyes, her stomach fluttering and heart stuttering a little as the polite smile. She didn’t respond for half a second as she scrabbled for control over her own functions.
“No, that’s fine, I’ll go,” she said, pulling the microscope over to her and inserting the slide for inspection. She glanced up at her lab partner before looking, though. “Thank you.”
She glanced into the microscope for a mere couple of seconds before whipping her head back and looking across at Edward with more confidence than she had shown throughout any meeting they had had. “Prophase.”

Edward knew that with his first mistake already made, a slip-up on what name to call her, along with his behavior, he had to be careful about what he said from now on. He didnt have the luxury with her of reading her mind to know if he had gone too far in creating suspicion. It was bad enough that he might end up not being able to resist her blood and killing her causing his family to have to move. But he knew it would be even worse to expose them all because he couldn't see she was ready to discover (and perhaps share) mistakes he had made.
With the new breath came new pain. But it was necessary. He waited for Alice to storm in pulling him out before he committed a massacre in the room, but no Alice meant he still had some semblance of control left inside him, at least with that breath he had.
He watched her agree to take her turn first and gave a simple nod of acknowledgment to her thanks, not wasting his breath on that for a response. She looked at the slide and he was sure she'd be like the others, stumbling their way through it. He could hear their confusion and see the mistakes they were making as he saw their images in his mind. She had barely even seemed to look at the slide before making her determination. "Mind if I take a look?" He asked her, reaching over instinctively to move the microscope to him.

As she looked over the slide beneath the highly defined magnification of the microscope, Bella could feel her cheeks begin to heat up with a familiar flush. She knew that so far in their 'conversation' (if you could really call it that) she has struggled to look at all mentally competent, which put more pressure on her impressing him with her knowledge of junior level biology. And seen as she had done the lab before in her old school, she would wonder about her own intelligence if she couldn't notice the difference between the different stages of mitosis at a glance - it was pretty obvious when you knew what you were looking for. When she realised that she could actually do this, a surge of confidence lit her up and she turned her dark eyes to Edward with more presence than she had managed to muster so far in their brief acquaintance.
As the boy asked if he could check himself - no doubt wondering whether she had just given up and simply guessed without paying attention - Bella moved her hand forward to offer the microscope to him herself, eager to show him that she wasn't just some awkward pale kid with limited smarts. However, as she did, so Edward reached out and their hands collided in the middle. Immediately Bella snatched her hand away, shocked by the sudden sharp current of electricity that emanated from his fingers to hers. So strong was the tingling feeling that she almost missed the fact that his hand was ice cold. She cast a glance up at him, questions written all over her face, but then reined in the expression. Whatever that was, it wasn't the place to discuss it in the middle of biology class.
Still, she couldn't help wondering a couple of things. How had they felt so cold? She knew that people had bad circulation, but his fingers had felt as if he had been holding them under a snow drift before class. And what was the shock all about? She had admitted to herself that she was attracted to him on a surface level (as was every other girl in Forks High), but there was something about that brief moment that was definitely something else. She bit the inside of her lip lightly as she waited for him to double check her assessment, wondering whether he had felt anything as well.
