{Early Breaking Dawn}
Matt let herself into the Stone family home, an uncomfortable look already dominating her features. She knew that her secret was going to fall apart at the seams, with the unmissable dressing that now adorned her head, and she just needed time to explain. Even though she thought of it the entire journey home, though, she still didn’t know how to approach it. Her meagre attempts at even trying to explain to Doctor Chambers that she wouldn’t be in that dangerous situation again hadn’t gone well. She had no idea how she was going to tell her family without making herself sound crazy for sticking it out silently. And the whole Taz thing? That still made her sick just to think about it.
Making her way to the living room, she kept her ears open to listen out to see if anyone was around. She vaguely remembered something about a day trip being arranged for her little sisters, which was something at least, but then she had no intention of talking to anyone that wasn’t Leo first. A small pang of guilt attacked her gut as she assumed how hurt he would be that she hadn’t seen fit to share any of this with him, but then she knew he was holding back on something too. She certainly couldn’t hear anyone moving around and Matt vaguely sat on the precipice between hoping and wondering whether she could just get away with this, sensible reputation intact – she knew it wouldn’t happen though; her creativity for excuses was sorely lacking and even if she could hide it from everyone for the rest of the night, someone would notice the next day.
Much to her dismay, Matt suddenly realised that a few unbidden tears had begun to fall down her cheeks. They were due to the stress, she was sure, but she wasn’t one to cry at nothing. Plus, once she began to wonder what had started her off, she began to think of the whole messed up situation. At that point she was just glad she didn’t have an audience. She felt absolutely crushed and so alone. She sat down on the sofa, resting her elbows on her knees and hanging her head in her hands.
“Leo?” she called, once she had calmed enough to produce speech. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hands and say up a little to see if he was around, pushing the bloodstained section of hair behind her ear – while it would be bad enough for him to see the dressing, she figured that hiding it with horror-film-styled hair would make an even worse impression.

Leo sat on the floor of his bedroom, calling Wolf back over to him who dropped the slobbery tennis ball in his hand. “Good boy” He said scratching the top of his head giving him some praise for dropping the ball nicely before throwing it again. “Go get it!” He said as the ball bounced out the door and into the hall. Leo was enjoying having the house to himself. His parents had taken his younger sisters out for the day and Matt was…well he didn’t know where Matt had gone off to today.
Wolf padded his way back into the room, but it appeared he was done with his game of fetch as he brought back a bone instead of the ball and started chewing on it in the corner of the room. Leo thought he heard the front door close downstairs. Someone was home and since he didn’t hear squealing, screaming or running around he knew it couldn’t be his youngest sisters, but was probably Matt. He waited expecting to hear her coming up the stairs to her room, but didn’t hear anything futher until a moment later he heard her calling to him. There was something about her voice that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. Whether it was an overreaction, or an extra one of his wolf-senses alerting him to danger he didn’t know, but he wouldn’t take any chances.
Leo got up and hurried his way downstairs. “Matt?” he called out on his way to find her. Then he saw it, the bandage across her head. He could smell the blood from across the room. “Matt what happened! Are you okay?” He asked rushing to her side.

Matt’s point of focus shifted swiftly from the hazy middle distance to where she could expect her brother to emerge from upon hearing his voice. Not that she had actually called him to her and he was here, she could feel her nerve buckling. The whole situation was just mortifyingly embarrassing and, the more she thought of it, (without trying to excuse away Rory’s violence) the more she realised that the whole series of events had begun with one stupid action by her. It wasn’t a nice thought. As Leo moved to her side she wordlessly rested the good side of her head against his shoulder for a moment before sitting up again. She faced him, finding his own concerned eyes with her deciding ones. She bit her lip, abruptly tongue tied; ‘are you okay?’ was a loaded question, but she knew that she ought to reassure him about the injury first.
“The head’s fine, I’m going to need checking on tonight, though, just in case, but I’m sure it’s fine,” she started, gesturing with her hand up toward the very subtle bandage. She attempted a reassuring smile to go along with her words, but it was a ghost of what it usually was. “I uh… well… what happened is a longer story.”
She stalled, her stomach turning flap flops. She couldn’t believe that she was nervous of telling her own brother. If it had been a year ago Leo would have known the minute that she met Rory and Matt now felt guilty for having kept everything from him for so long. She knew that he’d be hurt. She let out a long, unintentional sigh before snapping herself back into focus.
“I’d have thought you’d have been with Issy today?” she asked, persuading herself that if he had no plans then she would tell him all. No going back.

Leo’s eyes looked at his sister with intense worry as she explained that she was going to need checking on tonight to make sure she was as fine as she was trying to convince him she was. “That doesn’t sound fine Matt…have you seen a doctor? I can take you to a hospital…” he said concerned. He didn’t understand how she could have gotten hurt. The look on her face told him she hadn’t just fallen and hit a rock. It wasn’t an embarrassed look of being clumsy. It was something big and he could feel his protectiveness coming up.
“I can handle long stories…what’s going on…you can tell me” He told her, wishing he had been with her when this happened. He could have stopped it, he knew he could have. Leo could feel his arms beginning to shake. It was a familiar feeling and he knew he had to calm himself while his mind ran threw all the possible ways he had neglected to keep his sister safe. In an attempt to calm himself, and hopefully get her to talk to him, he sat next to her on the couch.
He shook his head as she mentioned how she thought he’d be with Issy today. “No plans, I think she was gonna see Quil today…but that’s not important Matt…come on, you’ve got dried blood in your hair and a bandage on your head…were you in an accident? Did you get in a fight?”

Matt closed her eyes briefly, the painkillers she had taken having begun to wear off and a slow pounding resumed in her skull. She brought one hand – the less bloody one – up to her uninjured eyebrow and rubbed her knuckle over it before looking back at her brother. Anything to stall for time; she needed it to think, and thoughts weren’t being very forthcoming in her current state. She knew she had to reassure Leo so that his protective nature wouldn’t get the better of him before she had a chance to explain properly. Removing her hand from her eyebrow, she raised her palm to him, trying to signal in a casual manner that she really was alright.
“I’ve been to the clinic,” she told him, her mind returning back to the time she had spent with Doctor Chambers, an odd hint of something pleasurable about it, though she was sure that must have just been the safety she felt with him… the way he managed to put her more or less at ease. “And that’s just what the doctor told me. It’s okay, though, just a precaution. Really, Leo, it’s better than it looks.”
She took a couple of deep breaths while Leo told her that he had no plans for the day, that Issy wasn’t expecting him and she tried another attempt at steeling her nerves. This was it then; now she felt sick. He was going to be so mad at her for not opening up to him about this before now, maybe not straight away, but… She tried to convince herself that it wasn’t as big as all that; that she was making mountains out of molehills, but that only worked so far by the time the questions began to pour forth from Leo’s lips. Taking one more deep breath, she turned to face her brother as he sat beside her, though eye contact wasn’t coming easily.
“No, no fight, well I didn’t fight, but then it wasn’t really an accident either. Well, it might have been, but,” she stopped abruptly, the faintest of blushes heating her usually cool exterior up. So far so bad, she knew she had to explain this properly, but she was getting mixed up in excuses and confusion before she had even started. She attempted a weak smile. “No, wait. The beginning. So, I have sort of… been seeing this guy, these past few months.”
Her dark eyes glazed over a little, though it wasn’t a doe-eyed look of lovers, but a steelier look of someone who had constructed a shell. She twisted her hands in her lap, unconsciously, and wished fervently that she could just sleep all of this away. How wonderful it would be if it was all just a nightmare. “And, you know, he was nice at first… but…”
She trailed off, chewing her lip as a lump of emotion threatened to burst through her tight throat. In a swift motion her dark eyes flicked back to Leo and then she bowed her head, so that she wouldn’t have the shame of seeing his reaction, which she assumed to be disappointment that he knew none of this. She knew that she had not even divulged half her story so far, and this part, in fact, was the easy bit, but she just needed another minute to collect herself. “I’m sorry.”

Leo knew that Matt was stalling. She didn’t want to tell him the truth. She was either prolonging having to tell him what had really happened or trying to come up with another excuse. He only hoped it would be the truth, or that he’d at least be able to tell if it wasn’t. He was worried about her. He had been so busy with patrolling lately, trying to protect the entire reservation, that maybe he had neglected to protect his own family.
Leo was a little more comforted as she said she had already been to the clinic. At least it meant she got the treatment she needed, but it still worried him that she needed any at all. “It looks bad…are you sure its okay?” He asked her again. “Do you need anything? Water? Or an ice pack?” He said wondering what he could do to help her.
Leo tried to be supportive as he sat next to her. He wanted to help her now and was worried about what she’d have to tell him about how this happened. He tried to be patient, not wanting to make her feel rushed.
He listened as she started explaining, stumbling over her words that she didn’t fight but it wasn’t an accident. Someone had hurt her, deliberately. He could feel his hands shaking again, ready to change and had to force himself to calm down the urge and listen. She then started talking about a guy she was seeing. “A guy? You never told me…” He said stopping himself, knowing this wasn’t the time to ask why she hadn’t told him about her relationship history.
Matt began telling him how he was nice at first, and her voice trailed off. Some guy she had been seeing had done this to her. He had hurt her and left her bandaged and needing checking on. “Who was it? Who did this to you?” Leo asked enraged, and wanting to get revenge for his sister. While he was distracted by his anger he saw that she was lowering her head and looked like she was about to break down, as she started apologizing.
“Oh Matt…I’m so sorry this happened” He said softly, putting his arms around her and giving her a supportive hug. “I’m never going to let him or any other guy hurt you again” He vowed, as he gently rubbed her back.

Matt tried to look at her brother confidently to instil confidence in her assertion that her injury wasn’t that bad, but with everything whirling through her just then, she wasn’t entirely sure that she managed the look that she had been aiming for at all. She nodded her head lightly, though, glad that it no longer caused her vision to shift in that unsettling manner it had before and she lifted her hand to stop her brother from running off to get her anything. She knew that if he left for even a moment she would convince herself that this purging of all the poisonous secrets of the last few months was unnecessary.
“I’m fine, really. It’s just a cut, you know what it’s like, just blood, and it’s stopped now. Promise. Just…” she paused, sucking in a breath as she took another step towards ultimate catharsis, though she doubted that she would feel that great at the end of it. “Just stay here a while, I need to talk to you now.”
As she began her long, painful story, Matt turned inward, making a large effort to stop herself from rambling about nothing and from descending into raw emotion. As such she more or less missed the shaking of her brother’s hands, though she did register it in the back of her mind. Perhaps she was being selfish, though, because the sensory information was quickly lost in the sea of her mind without her bringing it up, without it even concerning her, even though in her normal state of mind she would be worried for Leo.
“I know, I didn’t want to… bother you,” she said, her voice strung much higher than usual through guilt. She hadn’t told Leo about Rory for a couple of reasons; because he always seemed so busy recently, because she wanted to be seen to be doing things on her own for a change and perhaps because she secretly knew that she would be humiliated for falling for a man like Rory’s charm and putting up with his nonsense.
As the questions began to pour forth from Leo’s lips, Matt knew that she wouldn’t be able to answer them, feeling them as accusations rather than anything else. She knew she should have told her brother everything from the outset, or at least from when Rory started treating her badly, but now that all that had happened, was it a good idea to divulge everything now, at this late stage? Her confidence in her task was waning, but she knew that she needed someone to know, because otherwise she would just about implode. Plus, she doubted that it would be missed when she stopped going out altogether – she never really hung out with anyone other than Rory and Taz.
However, just as she felt the shame was about to consume her, she felt arms encompass her and heard the soft support from her brother. She sighed, deeply, allowing her head to fall against the comforting warm presence of Leo’s shoulder. She thought over the events of the last couple of weeks and allowed her eyes to close to disguise tears shooting to her eyes. “I’m not sure you’re going to have much a choice,” she said, miserably, water beginning to stream down her cheek despite her attempts to stop it. That was all she could get out before her voice failed her again.

"You're not fine, you're bandaged, you've got dried blood on you, and it was bad enough to have a doctor tell you to have someone check up on you later" Leo said not wanting her to make light of something like this, really worried about her wellbeing. "I'm not going anywhere" He assured her, trying to soften his voice as she asked him to stay so she could talk to him.
"Bother me? Matt, you know I'd rather you bother me than have something like this happen, I want to know what's going on in your life...I told you when I met Issy" He told her, thinking that she should have been just as comfortable telling him about meeting a guy. "I'm sorry if I havent been around as much lately, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt be here anytime you wanted to talk."
Leo felt a little guilty for all of the questions that came out so quickly. He wanted to know the information but knew that she was in a delicate state right now. He didnt want to upset her further by seeming insensitive to it all in his attempt to learn all the details. But he could see how upset she was even as he asked the questions and he brought her into the hug, hoping that he could give her at least a little of the comfort and support that he knew he should have been providing all along.
"Believe me I have a choice" He told her as she doubted that he'd be able to keep guys from hurting her in the future. "I want you to always let me know who you're seeing, let me make sure they're not going to hurt you. I will protect you Matt" He told her. "I promise you I'm not gonna let this happen again, and whoever did this is going to pay"

There was no way that Matt could think of to argue against the logic of Leo’s come back to her assertion that she was fine. She knew that Doctor Chambers had probably only told her to get someone to check on her as some kind of failsafe, just in a very unlikely case, but… She shrugged uncomfortably, a corner of her mouth twisting as she dropped her eye line from her brother’s face to a neutral space in the middle distance. Despite this internal distancing and objectifying of the situation, she still felt a slight warm comfort spread through her chest as she heard her brother reassure her that he was there for her, though she was still embarrassed and confused as he chided her softly for not telling him of Rory.
“I guess so,” she conceded to him, her bespattered fingers rising idly to play with the edge of the dressing lying over her eyebrow. She knew it was true, he had told her about certain aspects of his life, but she knew there was a lot these days… a lot more than there used to be, though she had surmised that just came with the territory of becoming adults. She managed a half smile, finally catching his eye again as she latched on to the mention of his girlfriend.
“That’s because you can’t shut up about her,” she said, meaning to be good natured, in the same way that she often teased Leo about the way he doted over his girlfriend, though she didn’t like the unintended deadpan tone of her voice that accompanied it. She sighed, her rotten mood swallowing up the small smile within moments. “I know you’re busy though and… well, I don’t suppose it really matters now.”
Matt shook her head a little in response to her brother’s well meaning assurances that he would protect her from any harm that any future boyfriends might give her, knowing that he could and no doubt would be able to do it. The only problem was that Rory would still have the power to hurt her even now, perhaps not physically, but she had gauged enough since her talk with Taz that the two of them were something of an item, despite her candid conversation with her so-called best friend. Leo could do whatever he wanted to Rory, even Matt’s gentle nature had no desire to protect the slimeball, but how could he stop the emotional pain of seeing the two of them… She shook her head again, slightly harder to dislodge the image, and clenched her eyes shut for a moment half in an effort to blot out her imaginings with the blackness behind her eyelids and half in response to a thread of pain that wound itself around her vision with the movement.
“Taz is with him now,” she announced abruptly after a few awkward moments of silence as she tried to broach the subject. She knew that although she had become a better friend with Taz since their move to La Push, her brother was still friendly towards her and counted her as a good person. She didn’t want to poison him against his ex-girlfriend, but was it poisoning when it was just speaking the truth? She swallowed a lump in her throat, her dark eyes, bright with tears, leaping up to meet her brother’s gaze. “She was with him… before… and now. I tried to warn her, but-“
She cut herself up as she felt her voice straining against a welling of emotion. During the break in her speech an enormous wave of self-pity and nostalgia for the simple friendships of Neah Bay wrapped itself around her heart. It was only here that things had become so complicated. Her eyes widened as she looked with unseeing eyes to the tear-blurred shape of her brother. “Leo, I want to go home,” she said, her shaky voice filled with longing, before allowing her tired head to drop to a downcast position.

When Leo saw the twisting in Matt's mouth as he convinced her of the reasons she wasn't fine, he hoped that he hadn't just made it all worse. He wasn't sure he had done anything right for her lately. She had thought he wasn't there for her and they had grown more apart than he ever would have liked. It hurt to have his twin so far away. He wished he could just tell her his deepest secret and show her that he wasn't pulling away, he was still her brother.
"Its not because I can't shut up about her, which maybe is true too, but its because I want you to know about my life, we share everything, or at least we should" Leo told her. He shook his head as she said he was busy. He was but he never wanted to be too busy for his sister, especially when she was facing abuse like this. "I'm never too busy when you need me, you just gotta talk to me"
"Taz is what??" Leo said shocked as he listened to Matt explain how even before they were together. Taz and Rory had cheated on Matt. It seemed like even more of a betrayal coming from Taz, someone who claimed to be a friend, especially hearing that she stayed after Matt warned her. "You told her what he was like as she still stayed? After knowing what she did to you too? What a bitch! I can't believe I ever thought she was worth our time" He said speaking for the both of them.
As Leo looked into her eyes she saw the tears returning as she told him she wanted to go home before dropping her head. He pulled her closer into a hug, his right hand gently rubbing her back. "I know....but this is our home now" He told her gently. "I'm sorry"

Although she didn’t blame Leo for pulling away, or wanting to have more of a life away from his twin, Matt couldn’t help but shake her head slightly at his insistence that they should tell each other everything. She waited for a couple of moments, allowing him to finish talking, wishing she could believe him, but how could she when she knew that there was something major she didn’t know. Since that time he disappeared it had always been like there had been an elephant in the room when they talked and in her raw state it was impossible to ignore.
“We used to tell each other everything,” she said, the frown still on her face, though she felt bad for putting this on him now. She lifted a hand to her head, digging her fingers into the clear skin around the dressing to distract the pain that was coming back now that the anaesthetic was wearing off. “But it hasn’t been like that for a while… it’s hasn’t been like that since that week in Neah. How can I talk to you when you sneak off every night and are away through the day?” She frowned deeper, regretting it as it spiked the pain level and she evened out her expression. She lifted her free hand and shook her head gently. “No, sorry… That… wasn’t fair. I just… I’ve missed you. Things have really… sucked recently.”
Matt’s eyes swept over to her brother as he exclaimed about Taz’s betrayal and she cowered a little, embarrassed about what had happened. She nodded, dumbly, giving him a doleful look as she confirmed that she had told her what the guy was like and she stayed anyway. She sniffed a little, though she couldn’t deny that she felt a little comforted by the way he swept her under his wing, referring to them both. “Oh, I’m sure she might have her reasons,” she said softly, biting her lip.
She rested her head against Leo’s shoulder, her own chest heaving with long held back sobs for a minute or so as she realised just how lonely and pathetic she was now. She shook her head against his chest, her eyes closed against the tears. “You’ve nothing to be sorry for,” she lifted her head and wiped her puffy eyes. “I’ll be fine.”

Leo looked down as she mentioned how they used to tell each other everything but that it hadn't been that way for awhile now. He hated that he was keeping a secret from her, especially now that he knew that this was part of the reason she had kept her abusive boyfriend from him. If he had been upfront with her, if she didnt feel distant from him, then she'd have told him, Leo would have known and been able to keep her safe. His hands started shaking in anger at himself at allowing this to happen and he tried to push down the urge to change. He wished he had told her before finding the rest of the pack, before any alpha orders not to, but could that really stop him now? She was closer to him than anyone, they were twins, they shared the same DNA...His thoughts began to run off.
"I know Matt...its my fault. I should have been more open with you. I was going through a lot and I didnt know how to tell you and now...now I dont even know if I can anymore...but I want us to be close again. I want to be able to protect you" Leo said feeling his insides tearing as he fought with himself over what he was contemplating attempting to do. Was it the right thing? Would being open with her help? Or just scare her off? He had been so afraid of letting anyone know, but since finding the pack he didnt feel like such a freak as he had back in Neah bay. "It is fair...don't apologize...I've missed you too...I'm sorry I let this happen to us"
Leo shook his head as he watched Matt confirm what Taz had done. It was almost worse than what Rory had done to her, the fact that her so-called friend could do that. "She's got no good reason...we're done with her" He said knowing he'd never again think of her as a friend after the way she had hurt his sister. She was a fool for having thrown away a friendship with Matt over an abusive guy.
Leo gently rubbed her back as she leaned against his shoulder, trying to offer her a bit of brotherly comfort. "You are going to be fine, now that you're rid of all the jerks in your life...you'll find happiness, I promise you"

Despite how upset she was feeling and how often she had begrudged Leo his new friends and interests, or whatever it was keeping him away and making him so secretive towards her, Matt couldn’t accept him taking the blame for all this on his own broad shoulders. Maybe if it was just a bad choice with no or few consequences then she could take it out on him, but this had mushroomed incredibly and she knew that the blame lay squarely on her. Just because her twin brother had decided to break off from his sister and live his own life didn’t mean that she had to go off the deep end the way she did. She sighed a little and bowed her head. “It’s really not your fault, Leo… These things happen… I dealt with it and everything since badly. I know you have your own life to live; you don’t have to tell me everything.”
She could say the words, but it made her sad and she pressed down on the skin surrounding her dressing a little more as a distraction. She felt bad that she had put her brother on such a guilt trip, but it reassured her to hear him say that he’d missed her too, that it wasn’t just her. But then that just confused her as to why he had pulled away in the first place. What was he into that he couldn’t tell her about even if he wanted to? She hoped he wasn’t in trouble too.
Going over what had happened recently between herself and Taz actually hurt more than telling her brother about being cheated on and abused. She was fairly sure that was messed up, at least a bit, but she wouldn’t argue with it yet, all she knew was that it made her feel raw to know that her best friend didn’t count her word to value anything. She nodded meekly as Leo reaffirmed that they were done with her, agreeing, though in the back of her mind she just hoped that the other girl wouldn’t end up regretting her decision. She must actually think she cared for Rory to risk their friendship, and if he started beating on her then it would probably hurt much more for her. She bit her lip.
“We’re done with her,” she reiterated, giving him a weak smile, and then she chewed on her lip for a few moments. “I just hope she doesn’t get hurt…”
She nodded soberly as her brother assured her that she would find happiness now that she was rid of all the idiots in her life and leaning against his shoulder, feeling the old comfort that she could always count on from Leo, she could almost believe it. Almost; but just then anything so good felt distant. When she looked inside she felt so desolate, lacking the ability to pretend anymore. “Maybe,” she said in an uncommitted way, her voice dull. She knew that sooner, rather than later, this would blow over and it would just go back into the old routine – Leo would be out and busy, leaving her plenty of opportunity to make all the wrong decisions again.

"Matt, you're wrong it is my fault, you should have been able to come to me for help. Thats my job!" Leo said, angry with himself for not being there when and how she needed him to be in her time of crisis. He knew that if he hadn't been wrapped up in his own problems he would have noticed a difference in her too. He would have seen signs that something was off. They used to be so good at being able to read each other, but now he knew his secret was getting in the way of that closeness they shared. He shook his head as she tried to defend his actions saying how he didnt have to tell her everything. "I know I dont have to but I want to...I've always wanted too, I just don't know if I can" He said honestly.
Telling his sister that he had missed her too felt a bit like a relief to Leo. He realized how afraid he had been to say those words to her before, too afraid of the realization that would come behind them. Now he was more afraid of the consequences of not saying the words, and not trying to clear the air completely. "I really do want you to know everything...I never wanted to go get some separate life from you, never"
It was hard to hear how Taz had betrayed Matt. Leo knew he hadn't been there for her, but to hear her friend had done worse than that and been part of the cause of the betrayal was worse. Leo wanted to protect his sister. He felt like he was a failure. His supposed reason for being what he was, was in order to protect their people. He couldn't even protect his own sister right now.
Matt was a better person than Leo was right now. He was too angry to think well enough of the person who had hurt his sister to hope she wasn't in turn hurt. "You warned her...serves her right if she does" He told her.
As Leo hugged his twin and saw her node to his assurances of her happiness, he hoped he was helping at least now. He also hoped his words were true and that she would find happiness. She deserved it more than anyone he knew.
