Bella glared at her speed-fiend boyfriend as he teased her about her driving, though she couldn’t help but allow a laugh to escape her lips. Maybe if she hadn’t purposely been trying to antagonise him, then she would have had the motivation to muster up a proper glare, but she knew better than to try to change Edward’s habits at this late stage.
“I think you’ll find,” she said, as she turned to let herself out of the truck. “That I had perfect timing.”
She looked up at him as he took her hand on their walk up to the cottage, ever grateful that he would choose her voluntarily, that he would show his affection towards her in public. The fact that he was with her never ceased to amaze her, not for one second of one day, and coming to a high school party with him served only to increase her astonishment. She put the thought out of her mind, though, as she noticed Jess and then Amber and Mike in the house. A brief shudder of nervousness stuttered her heartbeat, for no other reason than the simple fact that she never went to many parties. Parties tended to have music, which meant dancing, and Bella Swan didn’t dance. Much.
She smiled at Jessica in greeting, a little perturbed by her cool manner. In fact, did she just brush them off? She tried to quickly think of what she had done to offend the girl, which was easily done, to be quite honest, but she came up with nothing. She then waved in shy greeting at Amber, a girl she only knew well enough to say ’hello’ to in the halls and nothing much more, though she did have a grin for Mike as she greeted him. The sight of Mike and Amber hand-in-hand caused a little surge of joy, combined with relief, to rise in her. Mike was a good guy and he really deserved a nice girl that liked him back - she had thought the two were just friends, but perhaps there was something more. Although, remembering the way she acted with Jacob did remind her that perhaps they were just good friends. Probably best she didn’t say anything until she was certain. She exchanged a glance with Edward as he handed the gift across to Amber. A faint feeling of guilt assaulted her as she remembered that she hadn’t paid a cent towards it, though it wasn’t for the want of asking, though, if they were to… marry, one day, then she supposed she’d better get used to it.
She smiled at Amber’s reaction to their gift, though her eyes widened ever so slightly at the tear. She had no idea what the girl had gone through at her foster parents’ house and so the tear seemed a bit much. Not that she could really talk, she knew that she was a cry baby. She grinned back at Amber as she beamed over to them, seeing the effort she was putting into the smile and raised her eyebrows a little in shock as she caught Edward in a hug. She had never seen anyone hug him, ever. Well, except her. What she wasn’t expecting was the feeling of indignant jealousy tinted with a modicum of amusement, which turned to guilt as she realised that they were just friends, that this must be how Edward felt when he saw her with Jacob. She hadn’t realised that there was anyone else in Forks that felt comfortable enough with the Cullens to even think about giving them a hug. Thus, she swallowed the feelings down and accepted her own hug with grace.
“That’s okay, Amber,” she told her. “You deserve it, the first of us to strike out on their own.” As the other girl went to stand with Mike again, Bella moved closer to Edward and took his hand once more, her eyes scanning the décor in the pretty little place.
“It’s a beautiful place,” she commented, turning so that she could see who the next person was to enter. A boy she hadn’t spoken to, she realised, and she shrank shyly into Edward’s side.

The gravel and dirt of the little road up to the cottage that Amber had managed to rent for herself crunched satisfyingly under the wide tires of Carlisle’s Mercedes as he drew up to the house. A quick glance at the busy area told him that Bella and Edward were already in attendance at the party, and he was interested to note that Edward had allowed his girlfriend to drive. A small smile perked up on his lips at the thought, knowing the varying points of view that Edward and Bella had on speed and traffic laws. He quickly and efficiently turned the long car around in the small space and ducked out of it. It wasn’t a usual occurrence for Carlisle to attend a party of any kind that wasn’t being hosted by Alice, but he had been a source of inspiration for this project, and he thought it only proper to congratulate her on accomplishing what she wanted. Without turning to look at her, Carlisle addressed his passenger,
"Looks like Edward and Bella are already here..."
He stepped out of his car and straightened out his coat, pulling the customary scarf level around his neck. He hadn’t got her much, in his eyes, for starting her new home, but he didn’t want to go over the top. They were only colleagues after all, and it was easy for him to forget just the value of money. He had settled, as most people had, for a gift card, but to a culinary wares shop in Port Angeles. It seemed apt to get her something for the kitchen, considering the amount of times she seemed to come in with something for him to eat. First, waiting for Jayden, he walked up to the front door and tapped on it lightly, easily able to distinguish scents from various Forks students with just a couple of unknowns, who hadn’t graced the hospital in the last few years. He placed an easy smile on his face as he waited for the hostess to allow him entrance.

Edward gave a polite smile in Mike's direction as he greeted them, but could see the fakeness there was behind it until he turned his attention to greet Bella, who he was obviously much happier to see at the moment. Edward's attention was more focused on Amber right now, wondering if she'd like the gift. Perhaps an 18 year old girl would not think a doorknocker was much of a gift. Teenagers tended to be more interested in electronics, or even just money. But he saw the look in her eyes as she saw the gift and knew it was the perfect one for her. He hadn't intended to make her cry, but knew that at least they were good tears.
Edward was more than surprised as she came over to him and gave him a hug. Most humans avoided coming into even close proximity with him, much less touch him, but she was trying to hug him now. He politely returned the hug, but in a rather awkward way as he was trying to make sure that his hands did not make contact with any areas of bare skin (such as her arms). The coolness of his skin would surely be a shock to her, not one he could easily explain. But at the same time, he didn't mind her gesture.
He smiled as he watched Amber move over to hug his fiance in what he was sure appeared a much more comfortable hug. When they were done with their embrace Edward put his arm lightly around Bella's shoulder, nodding in agreement with her appraisal of the home. "It is quite lovely" He told her, as he began to picture himself and Bella in Mike and Amber's positions right now, welcoming their friends and family to a new home as husband and wife. The thought left him with a smile on his face that remained as he heard his father's car approaching. There was another boy who arrived first however who was unfamiliar to him, he Bella shyly move towards him and kept his arm around her trying to offer comfort.

Alex smiled nervously as the door opened and he was let in. He recognized everyone there and waved before asking, "Hey, how's everyone doing?" Then he turned to Amber and handed her the card, saying, "Happy Birthday, Amber. Hope you enjoy it." The place was small, but comfortable and Alex went to stand in an empty place in the little circle of people talking. He knew Edward and Bella were inseparable, and that Mike and Jessica were ex's, but not much else about the little group.
Being around all these people he didn't know too well was a little uncomfortable, but he was glad to just relax and chat with everyone. Alex wasn't really that shy, it just took him awhile to warm up to people and he figured as everything got going he would open up more. Alex noticed Jessica was looking really good at the moment, dressed as she was for the party. He had heard a lot of things about her and a lot about other people at school and found it interesting.
It wasn't the drama so much as the people. Alex had been interested in psychology since he was younger and he liked to figure people out. It was what he planned on studying when he got into college. Maybe tonight would be even better than he had hoped with the rate at which people were arriving. Already the door bell had rung behind him announcing someone else was about to join the party.

Jayden followed Carlisle up to the front door of the modest house. When he had first mentioned a party she had been apprehensive about the whole thing. Not that humans bothered her, but meeting new people did. She had bought a collection of photo frames to decorate the house. Not knowing the girl made buying a gift hard, and photo frames seemed a neutral option.
She shifted the gift in her hand and adjusted her modest attire. Straightening her hair and fiddling with her pocket. She was nervous and a little scared. This would be the first interaction she had had with Humans in a group. She was glad to be arriving with Carlisle and that Edward was inside. She was still to meet Bella but having at least two of her kind there was reassuring. She tried to look relaxed with a slight smile on her face as she and Carlisle wait for the door to be opened.

Elaine slowly drove to the address that was written on the invite. She looked in her rear view mirror occasionally to make sure that the gift she had given Amber was not being messed up. Elaine had worked all morning on it hoping it turned out great. She smiled as she pulled up to the house and got out wearing a pair of blue jeans with a powder blue over the shoulder top. "Okay Elaine this party is going to be fine you just need to have fun."
Once getting out of the car she picked up up the lid on the box she had. Elaine knew it was a birthday party and nothing was better for a party then cake. She had made the past to days a chocolate 3 layer cake. The icing was made up of a coconut butter-cream icing. She then had put a bouquet of purple and black roses with green leaves on one corner of the cake. It had green shell pattern around the top and bottom of the cake to give it some dimension and color. Then lastly she wrote in green, black, and purple the words 'Happy Birthday Amber'. Elaine smiled at the fact that nothing had happen to it on the trip here and closed the lid. She knew she went a little to far on the baking on it since if you really wanted her one cake could feed 30 people.
"Well here we go. I can't turn back now." Elaine then picked the box up out of her car. After shutting the door with her hips she started to head up to the house for the party. Once at the door she stood there waiting for the door to be opened. She noticed that one of the people there was that doctor she had meet the day she went to the emergence room. "Hello there Carlisle. I am doing better."

It was all a blur after Amber explained who he had questioned had pulled up to the front of her home. He squeezed the hand of hers he held as more guests started to arrive. Mike hadn't expected this many people to show up. Not at all. It was almost overwhelming for him, and he was used to being a social person. He wondered what Amber thought of all of this.
After the arrival of Alex others followed; Dr. Cullen, Jayden, and Elaine. He watched out the window as their cars started pulling up. Bumping the guest count up from the initial couple Amber had invited, up to eight or so guests. Though it didn't sound like a lot, Amber hadn't exactly prepare herself for it. Now feeling guilty about spreading the word of the party he turned to smile at her and leaned his head so his mouth was closer to her ear. "Sorry," he apologized in a barely audible whisper. "I didn't expect them all to show up."
Instead of waiting for Amber to get the door, he opened it instead, his smile warm and welcoming to the party guests. Seeing Elaine holding a box in both hands he figured he'd help her out with whatever she had. Letting go of Amber's hand he walked over to the girl. "Here, let me get this," he told her, replacing her hands with his own around the box.
As he turned to walk back into the house he turned his head slightly to the three of them, nodding in toward the inside of the house. "Come on in," he told them as he stepped through the door and headed straight for the kitchen.

"Thanks! I just wish it was a little bigger!" Amber replied, glad Bella and Edward liked her house. Somehow, it meant considerably more than she had expected that Edward liked it. They had a kind of bond, being from similar backgrounds, and she felt as though having someone like her appreciate the home she had found for herself made it even more special, and that Bella liked it made her smile even brighter than it had been. She was the first girl who had visited, apart from Jessica, and she had wondered what another feminine eye might think of her efforts. It seemed as though her work had been worth it.
Turning to Alex again, she took the card with a smile, adding it to the stack of cards and the gift bag that sat on the table, promising herself that she would make sure to thank him properly when her brain was more capable of coherent thought. "I think we're doing okay" she chuckled, her voice containing a slight note of hysteria. "It's a little busier than I expected. Thanks so much" she added hastily, a pasty smile on her face as she forced her thoughts into a semblance of normalcy. "Make yourself at home!"
Glancing through the window again, her jaw dropped at the sight of the gathering number of people at the door. It was quickly getting out of hand, and her little house soon wouldn't be able to cope. As Mike whispered in her ear, she shuddered a little at the breath on her skin, surprised by the proximity. She had been so overwhelmed by the sheer number of guests in rapid succession that she hadn't even noticed him leaning closer. Looking up at him, she narrowed her eyes in a mock glare, though she knew it was futile as she felt the corner of her mouth twitching in an automatic smile. She couldn't possibly be angry at him, no matter how much she wanted to be.
"You will be" she whispered back, but was glad when he took over the role of host for a moment, welcoming the guests. There were so many, she couldn't keep track. She watched as the newcomers entered, smiling warmly at Elaine, glad to see that she had come. Amber knew that they shared common interests, cooking being one of them, and she heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of the box Mike was taking from her. It was obviously food, and she couldn't help being immensely grateful to her for bringing it, no matter what it was. With the number of guests that had shown up, there was no chance that the little plates of finger foods she had prepared would be enough. Mouthing a quick thank you to the girl, knowing she wouldn't be able to voice the words properly, she peeked past her to see who else had arrived.
Her face lit up at the sight of Dr Cullen and his guest. She had never seen the girl before but she maintained a policy that anyone the Cullens liked had the benefit of the doubt. Besides, the poor girl looked almost as scared as Amber felt and that made her feel sorry for her. Gesturing with her hand for them to come in, she coughed a little to clear her throat, feeling calmer now that Dr Cullen had arrived.
"I'm so glad you could make it!" she called to them, having to raise her voice to be audible over the noise from the other guests. "It's a little more crowded than I expected, I'm afraid" she added, shrugging apologetically and casting a suffering glance in Mike's direction, unsure if he had even seen it. She smiled gently at the new girl, turning to Dr Cullen. "I'm so sorry, can you excuse me for just a moment? I promise, I'll be right back. I just don't think I trust Mike with that box!" She laughed at the comment, silently adding that she desperately needed a moment to breathe and pull herself together.
Taking a couple of steps backwards until there was space enough for her turn turned, she flashed them another apologetic smile before darting into the kitchen after Mike. When she was finally out of sight of the guests, she sank down in one of the chairs by the table, breathing deeply. She had had panic attacks before and could feel one beginning, she only hoped she could stop it before it got started properly. Gripping the edge of the table, she closed her eyes, concentrating on her breathing, willing herself to calm down, reminding herself that it was only people, and most of them were her friends. There was nothing to worry about.

Elaine walked into the house and smiled. She had loved the small cozy feeling that Amber's house had brought. She knew there was no way that she would every think about letting people into her house for a party. The reason might have been that it looked at if no one lived there half the time. Which was true Elaine was always out and about doing things and never at home.
She looked around and smiled when she saw who some of the guest were. She was happy even more about the fact that once of them happen to be Alex. She had not expected to see him there but it made this party even better for her. She gave him a quick wave before walking some more heading to where Mike and Amber had went.
Elaine got to the door of the kitchen and knocked on the door. She was wanting to help them out in what every way possible. She then slowly stuck her head into the room and smiled. "I just wanted to feel you guys in on what was in the box. I know you said that it was a birthday party and was not sure what get you for a gift. I doubted that anyone had thought about a birthday cake. So well I made you a chocolate 3 layer cake with a coconut butter cream icing. I hope you like it. I was not really sure what flavor to get so that what I did. "
She then walked into the room and smiled and gave Amber a hug. "Is there anything you need me to do. I can cook, entertain, what ever. I know I have not been the nicest person in the world since that whole homework thing. I want to help you out though and make this the best party ever so just tell me what you need me to do and I will do it. Consider it my gift. Plus well I thought we could go shopping for things later." Elaine smiled as she pulled up from the hug and stood there waiting for what need to be done.

Carlisle gave Jayden an encouraging smile as Elaine came to join them on the doorstep, his ever calm countenance steady on his face. He could feel the nervous tension coming off her in waves, anyone could, though he couldn’t blame her anxiety. He had coerced her into accepting his invitation to the party as he thought she was ready for this stage of human interaction. He knew she was no danger to them, she just needed to build her confidence, and he was sure that Amber would have a small party. However, by the looks of it she was more popular than she thought.
“You’ll be fine,” he murmured to her, his voice low enough for the words to be private between them. He looked across at Elaine as she joined them and smile warmly at her, not surprised that he was encountering many of his ex-patients here, it was a small town after all. However, before he had the opportunity to speak to her, the door was pulled open and the hostess - who looked happy, if a little stressed - dashed away with a simple greeting. He laughed a little, mostly to put Jayden at ease and lay a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“I’m just going to speak to Elaine,” he felt he ought to respond to her, though she had made her way through to the kitchen. He liked people to feel comfortable enough to come to him with their ills, and he knew the girl found it quite difficult to open up. He didn’t want to encourage a backslide by unintentionally ignoring her. He glanced up at Edward and Bella, smiling at them in greeting and walked towards the entrance of the kitchen, standing just outside the door.
“Elaine,” he called, warmly, beckoning her back through to the living area. “You are looking great,” he told her, genuinely, referencing her entire demeanour, where the majority of teenage boys were noticing her figure. “Sorry, I didn’t get a chance to say ’hello’ earlier.”

Elaine heard her name and walked back into the other room and smiled. "Well if you guys think of something tell me okay. If we need more food I could always come back in here and cook something up for you. " She turned and started to head to the living room. "I am being called and you know it sort of rude to ignore people."
Elaine after that walked out the door and into the living room. She smiled at Carlisle and smiled. "Well thanks I was not worried about it. I thought you might have been thinking about something else and maybe did not hear me. I was going to say hi again later." She then looked at her clothes when he said she looked great. "oh this. I just happen to throw it on since I need to look nice. Thanks though."
She did not know why she thought it was fun to talk to him but now she was standing there waiting for him to say something or at least for someone else. She was not sure what to do she never was a big party person but she had become friends with them and wanted to be here even thought it felt weird.

At least more people were showing up, so it was a little easier to not feel so awkward. She noticed Bella give her a small smile and and she gave a little fake one back and turned around. After she said hello to Mike and tried her best to be sincere, i mean she was giving an effort here and he had to see that. But she couldn't deny the fact that Amber held his hand was really really bothering her. But maybe two could play at that game.
She noticed a guy had shown up who she thought his name was Alex but she didn't think she had ever talked to him before. He was sort of staring at her, which made her somewhat uncomfortable so she decided to say hi. "Hi, Alex right?" she said smiling, this time a true smile.

Carlisle's reassurance did little to shake the uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. She knew she was strong enough not to eat any of the guests, she just doubted her ability to function coherently around them. Jayden glanced over as a girl joined them on the step she neither smiled nor scowled at the new comer her expression remaining neutral.
From outside the house Jayden could hear the noise of the people inside; their heart beats, their laughs, their existence. She wanted to run but she had to do this to prove to herself and Carlisle that she was brave enough for this; for human interaction. As the door was opened she jumped a little. Been too caught up in her own thought she hadn't heard the person approach form the other side. She smiled what she hoped was a open, friendly smile as she followed Carlisle into the house. As the ever calm doctor explained he was going to talk to another guest she couldn't help but want to cling on to him. Instead she kept her composure and watched him walk away toward the back of the house.
Jayden stood just inside the front door and glanced around the small and pretty house. It was the kind of house Jayden would like to settle in, if settling was ever an option. She looked at each of the guests but didn't linger on their faces. She scanned past Edward and Bella and let her gaze rest on floor at her feet. She felt more out of place then ever in a room of both of her kind.

Alex tried to ignore the fact that Elaine was there. After their fight the other night, he didn't really want to talk to her right now. Which was exactly the reason he was talking to Jessica. Alex was still angry and he wanted to make Elaine jealous, which wouldn't be hard with Jessica. He ignored his...well he wasn't exactly sure she was still his girlfriend at this point, and replied to Jessica with a smile, "Yeah, it's Alex, and you're Jessica Stanley. It's nice to meet you."
Everyone knew who Jessica was because of how quickly rumors spread around school and how beautiful and popular she was. Alex couldn't lie and say he wasn't attracted to her right now with how good she looked. He knew that he and Elaine's fight had been stupid, and that he still really cared about her, but he was too stubborn to admit it. It was just hard thinking about leaving her after high school.
Alex asked Jessica, "Want to go get a drink and chat in the backyard?" He knew Elaine would see him walk out of the house with her, but he didn't really care at the moment. Alex wanted to forget their fight and just have fun and Jessica was the perfect person to do it with. He walked to the kitchen, hoping she would follow him. Alex waved at the people there before grabbing a drink and heading to the yard. It was a beautiful night and the stars were spread across the sky, twinkling like diamonds. Alex sat on a little bench and waited for Jessica to join him. The night was still very young and so much could happen.

Mike held the box carefully as he headed toward the kitchen, weaving in between the guests. "Excuse me," he mumbled. He couldn't help but laugh as he heard Amber's comment to the doctor. Setting the cake down on the counter he turned to look at her. His jaw dropped and his blond brow raised in an expression of mock sadness. "You didn't think I could handle taking the cake to the kitchen?" he questioned.
Though as he watched her sink into a nearby chair, his previous expression turned into a frown as he realized she was upset. He listened to Elaine explain what was hidden in the box, greet Amber, and leave before he took the few steps it took to get to Amber's side. He bent down, resting a hand on her knees. "Hey," he murmured. His face was full of worry as he looked at her; her eyes closed, breathing deeply. She looked like she was about to lose it. "Calm down," he tried to tell her. "It's going to be alright. They're all your friends. And I'll stay by your side all night."
A wave of guilt washed over him as he watched her go through a panic attack. If he would have known she would react like this he would have never spread the word. He glanced back out into the front room, he was sure the guests would be wondering where they were soon, and he didn't want them to have to see Amber like this. Grabbing her hand he stood up. "Come on," he muttered. "I promise you it'll all be fine." He gave her a genuine smile as he waited for her to stand up.
