{Pre-Twilight: Jack aged 27}
It had been a long time since Jack had seen Hayley, relatively speaking for the Harkness sibs. Usually they saw each other every month or so, met up for a night on the town, or sometimes just a coffee during the day, but since he had moved to Forks just a few weeks ago, they had not had a chance to catch up. Silly circumstances, really, Jack had all his time taken up with getting his place set up and starting work at the local police station and he knew that Hales had just started her career at the high school. They had kept in touch though, a quick text or call and he’d kept her more than up to date with all the dodgy, filth ridden jokes that he seemed to attract on a regular basis. Thus, that morning – a usual, overcast Saturday – he had called his beloved sister to arrange a meeting at a nice little café he had found.
“Café d’arte,” he murmured to himself as he parked up near its façade that afternoon. He hadn’t really paid attention to the place’s name, but thankfully the younger Harkness had known which one he had meant, which was why he paid particular attention to it now. If it was any good he might consider it as his regular coffee station, which he regularly needed after one of his more than regular nights out. Climbing out of the large car, the heavy wind swirled his greatcoat around his legs and he yanked it free as it entangled there.
A few minutes later saw Jack entering the little café with a stunning smile on his face, his blue eyes bright with obvious excitement. Himself and Hayley were very much kindred spirits and he always enjoyed a good chat with her on any occasion and as it had been a while, he was more excited than usual. He turned his sparkling smile to the barista and wandering over to the counter, his coat swinging around him dramatically in the unassuming little café. “I’m just meeting someone here, do you mind if I take a seat to wait?”
Taking the nod as an assent to his request, Jack turned his heel once more and sat himself down at one of the tables next to the far wall, leaning back to view the impressive art on the wall. He had to say that he wasn’t really an art lover of any kind, but whatever style this was called on the walls wasn’t half bad.

As Hayley saw the sign for the small café in Forks a childish grin appeared on her face knowing she’d get to see her big brother. It hadn’t been that terribly long since she had seen him, but it had been long enough and she had missed him. She always felt close to Jack and like she could talk to him about anything. He had always been there for her.
Hayley was thrilled knowing they were back living in the same town again. She hoped this would mean that they’d get to see each other on a more regular basis. She was just starting work at the school, and he had just started up with the Forks Police. It seemed as though things were off to a good start for them both.
Hayley got out of the small car. She was dressed casually today in jeans and a grey sweater. She had decided to go without a jacket today but the cool air made her glad that she didn’t have to walk too far before getting inside. As she opened up the door to the coffee shop, she reached up and ran a hand through her fingers fixing her hair a bit, before spotting her big brother already seated at a table. She saw Jack looking up at the artwork. Hayley loved the décor in the place almost as much as she enjoyed the coffee.
Hayley walked over to her brother’s table still smiling. “Hey Jacky boy, looking good!”

Tilting perilously close to the point of overbalancing on his chair like a small child, Jack continued to survey the walls, using his limited ability to critique art to come to the conclusion that they were ‘pretty good’. However, as the sound of the door closing drew his attention, causing him to sit up with a hard thud when the chair legs made fast contact back with the floor, he turned from the art and looked at his sister. With a cartoon sized grin and a quick movement that got him to his feet, he swept his arms around his sister and pulled her into a rough hug.
“Hales!” he almost shouted, joyfully unmindful of the other patrons in the café and the poor guy running the place who might not want yelling Harknesses in the place. Lifting her up off the floor, he grinned over her shoulder and then set her down again. He pointed one finger at her and squinted a little as he pretended to have to strain his memory to remember her choice of drink. “One mocha latte for the baby Harkness, coming right up.”
He laughed a little in a light hearted fashion and took a few steps back up to the counter to order his industrial strength Americano and the drink for his sister. Happily there wasn’t a queue at the counter so, after being assured that the coffees would be brought over once they were made, Jack turned to reclaim his seat. “So, Little One, tell me everything!”

Hayley was immediately engulfed by the arms of her older brother. He gave her a huge hug which she immediately returned, leaning into him. The grin stayed on her face, feeling like a kid again around Jack, especially as she heard him use his nickname for her. She started laughing as he lifted her up off the floor. “Showing off how strong you are or just checking to see if I’ve lost the freshman 15 from college yet?” She asked him feeling her feet reaching the floor once more.
Hayley watched as he acted as though he forgot what she liked to drink. “It hasn’t been that long” She smirked shaking her head watching him go over to the counter to order their drinks.
Hayley went over to the table she had found Jack at and sat at the seat across from him, waiting for him to get back, placing her purse on the seat of the extra chair beside her. She looked up with a smile as he came back. She laughed as asked her to tell him everything. “You’re so specific with your inquiries” She said wondering where to start. “Forks High is great, a little weird being back in my old high school, some of the teachers I had still work there” She said shaking her head at the oddity of it. “But its good to be back in town…and even better that you’re here too”

Jack grinned at his sister as he allowed her to stand on her own two feet once more, amused by her assumptions that he was either showing off or checking on her weight. Of course it was the former, as always, plus Hayley hadn’t gained a pound through her college years that he had seen, never mind fifteen. He shook his head a little, his blue eyes twinkling in amusement. He knew she was joking, his little sister knew him far better than to think that he would be cynical of weight gain in any form, having an avid appreciation of men and women of all shapes and sizes.
“Have to keep the muscles working, you know,” he told her with a cheeky grin before casting his eye up and down her. “Besides, there’s nothing of you – plenty more room for muffins and I’m talking full-fat, delicious double chocolate, goo-infested heart attacks. Then maybe you’ll give my musculature something to work with.”
With another bright grin and a low laugh, Jack continued to pretend that he couldn’t remember his only sister’s drink even though they often met in coffee shops when they met up. In reality he didn’t like to leave too long between visiting Hayley and not because he was worried about her per se, but he enjoyed keeping up to date on her life. He liked to know that she was doing well and if she had any problems, though he wasn’t one to butt in on them unless he felt the need to protect his little sister from something that he felt she ought not to suffer.
Turning back to the table after ordering the coffees, Jack quickly sat down once more opposite Hayley and shrugged off his massive coat, which was quite warm in the little shop. As usual he was wearing a blue shirt underneath and a very unfashionable pair of trouser braces, which he wore so often that he was unmindful of them. He merely smiled at his sister as she commented on his over-arching question of how she was, resting his chin on his palms as he did so. He didn’t ask her something so vague out of disinterest, but quite the opposite. So much had changed in both their lives in recent months that he did feel as though they had a whole lot to catch up on despite the relative short time since their last meeting.
“It’s what makes me a great police officer,” he told her cheekily, again grinning at her cheerily. The grin toned down a little to a respectable level as she spoke about how she was finding Forks High and he nodded understandingly – he thought it would be weird to work with people that you were taught to respect as a teenager. “Yeah, I get that,” he told her, agreeing with her sentiments. “I had to give old Mr. Garvey a DUI last weekend, though he kept telling me it was his cold medicine. Still, it’s great to be here, better than being stuck at some desk in Seattle like I would have been if the brass had gotten their way.”

Hayley laughed as Jack talked about working his muscles and then commented that she had plenty of room for full fat double chocolate muffins. "Mmmm that does sound good, order one of those with the drinks too, but split it with me so I dont have to have my heart attack alone" She told him with a grin.
Hayley gave him a fake angry glare as he continued on pretending that he didnt remember her favorite drink. She knew he did, but honestly she knew even if he had forgotten she'd quickly forgive him knowing how busy he was. Little things like that weren't important, he remembered to keep in touch which was much more important to her.
Back at the table, Hayley waited for Jack to sit down after ordering their coffees. It was hard for her to answer his question that seemed so vague, but she did her best to point out some of the highlights. She laughed as he told her his questioning skills were what made him a good police officer. "You must be the best on the force" She told him.
She laughed as he told her about giving one of their old teachers a DUI the other weekend. "Yeah that's gotta be hard" She said wondering if she'd chicken out having to do something like that. She smiled hearing that he was happier being here than back in Seattle. She knew she'd miss him if he was still in Seattle. "I'm glad you're liking it, I hope it means you'll stick around"

Jack smiled at Hayley and raised his eyebrows, laughing a little as she told him to split a muffin with her. He shrugged a little and put on a faux hurt face. “Oh I see how it is… You go down, you want to take me down with you…” he sniffed and broke the act with a short laugh. “Sure thing, but I assure you – my superior constitution will win the day.”
The small, quiet laugh then heightened as he saw the little scowl that his sister cast in his direction for ‘forgetting’ her favourite drink. As if that would ever happened. He grinned and put on an exaggerated sympathetic look. “Aww, poor Baby Harkness, it’s okay – I’ll just guess.” He laughed again and winked, flashing his white teeth at her in a wide grin.
“You betcha,” he said, cheesily, grinning broadly as Hayley ‘complimented’ him on his police questioning skills. It was true that he had his methods of persuasion, some perhaps not quite kosher, but still… It got the job done and he never went too far. Or at least he hadn’t yet. “Sometimes I don’t even have to ask the question before the perps spill; they just know…”
He nodded, confirming how difficult it was to experience a reverse of position in authority between those that were once untouchably respected, like the old teacher. He smiled widely at his sister, leaning his elbows on to the table as he took a little of his half of the muffin that he had brought back with him. “Yeah, it’s all looking good – the team is a good one, the desk job part of the gig is minimal – could just do with a liiiitle more action, but I can get that at the shooting range. And how about you? Got all the teenage boys following you round like love sick puppies yet?”

"You know it. I go down you're coming with me" Hayley told him jokingly as she got him to agree to split the muffin with her. Her scowl then continued as he called her 'Baby Harkness'. "Watch it there Jacky boy, Just because you're getting to be an old man doesnt mean I fall into the role of the baby" She said pretending to be stern, but not even minding if he called her that.
Hayley rolled her eyes as he cheesily agreed to his police questioning skills. "Oh I'm sure that's how it is all the time, they just see you and know there's no point in resisting so they confess right?" She said jokingly but then realized as kids she had always had a hard time keeping much from him. Maybe he was right, maybe he did just give off that sort of air about him.
Their conversation turned a bit more serious as they talked about the difficult aspects of work and she voiced her hope that he'd be sticking around. She really did hope that they'd be able to live in the same town. "Good I'm glad you like it...and I know you like your action but at least the shooting range is safer" She commented before grinning as he asked about the teenage boys. "Some of them are, I catch them staring at me while they daydream, or they try to act extra nice towards me. Only one or two have been bold enough to actually try to hit on me at school. But I still let them down gently"
