one year post Breaking Dawn
School just couldn’t go fast enough for Lyndal, every class seemed to drag which wasn’t unusual thought normally it was because she couldn’t wait to get home to see Nash. Time away from Nash always dragged, Lyndal missed him and day dreamed about him constantly in class resulting in slipping grades; but that didn’t matter now. Today was dragging more then normal because after school Lyndal was collecting Travis from school and spending the afternoon just him and her.
When she first arrived at the house Travis seemed to like her as much as she adored him, more recently that had changed. Travis had become moody and didn’t talk to her as he had at first. Lyndal knew it was probably her relationship with Nash; she didn’t blame the boy for been jealous after having his father’s full attention for so long. The last thing she wanted was to come between the two of them, or have Travis hate her especially when she was going to be in his life for so long.
After a long talk Lyndal had persuaded Nash that she and Travis just needed some time together. Today was the day.
As the bell rang to signal the end of the day Lyndal couldn’t move quickly enough. Dropping her stuff off at her locker Dal picked up her few books for the night wondering if she’d actually study or be distracted as was usual. Distraction was easy to find when Nash got home from work she wanted to spend as much time with him as possible, which wasn’t always easy with his aunt and uncle watching their every move. Since been caught, and nearly caught, a few times they had to find ways to be together without been caught. Trying to be together, and sneaking around, as well as the few chores she had didn’t leave a lot of time for study.
Rushing across the school grounds Lyndal made pace as a running walk towards the building that housed Travis kindergarten class. She knew her appearance here was going to be a surprise to him; normally Nash would pick him up after work. Class was already letting out and Lyndal watched as the children ran to waiting parents with pictures and excited faces full of the tales of the day. Searching the groups of children Lyndal sought out Travis, it wasn’t hard the boy looked identical to his dad; a face she didn’t need to think about to see in her minds eye.
When she saw him Lyndal called out immediately, unable to hold in her own excitement. “Travis!” She called her accent covering the word. A few mothers nearby turned to look at her their eyes curious, out of nerves Dal adjusted her bag on her shoulder. She wondered if they were asking themselves where Nash was, or did they think she was the boys absent mother. She didn’t let it bother her for long; instead she made her way towards the boy calling again. “Travis, hey.” She said drawing level with him and squatting down to talk to him.

Travis enjoyed kindergarten. To him school was fun. He liked hearing the stories the teacher would read. He liked snack time, and liked to make pictures that he could bring home to his Daddy. Of course as much as he liked school, he liked being home more, especially when Daddy wasn’t working. He loved his aunt and uncle (technically they were Nash’s aunt and uncle but it was less confusing for Travis to call them aunt and uncle as well) but his father was the one he always wanted to be around. He always missed him when he had to work, or like lately, when he was spending time with Lyndal.
Today he came out of school with a picture in his hand. His assignment that afternoon was to draw his immediate family. Most of the kids had two parents, themselves, and brothers or sisters making up a full family. Travis was happy just drawing himself and his father. The stick figures he drew to represent the two of them were standing in front of a house. It looked nothing like the house they were living in now, but was one that in Travis’ imagination they could live in together, just the two of them. The stick people were almost as tall as the house was.
As Travis walked along, holding onto his picture, he looked around for his Dad. His father was taller than most of the other kids dad’s so he was usually easy to spot. He then started looking for his aunt or uncle but as he looked he heard a voice calling out his name. That accent. It was her. Travis frowned wondering why she was here. He used to think she was nice, but lately all she was doing was taking time away from him being able to see his father. Didn’t she know he already didn’t get to see his Daddy much? He was always busy with work. They didn’t need her hanging around getting in their way.
She came over and crouched near him. Travis looked behind her, not seeing his father following her. “Where’s my Daddy?” He asked unhappily.

Lyndal couldn’t help but marvel at how adorable and how like his father Travis was; his hair, his face, even his walk. She knew she loved his father and had done since the moment she saw him in the airport, watching Travis navigate the play ground Dal knew she loved him too. Lyndal wondered if the love she felt for Travis was an extension of the imprinting she and Nash shared, whatever it was she knew she adored Nash’s little boy.
Daydreams and thinking had Lyndal wondering if Travis would ever accept her as part of he and his dad’s life. It was all that thinking and how much she wanted to be a part of his life that drew her to want to spend the afternoon with him. Lyndal wanted Travis to know she wanted to be a part of their lives, not take his father away from him.
As she couched in front of Travis she wondered how he would react to her presence, Lyndal knew at home he was moody and ignored her now he couldn’t. She worried he’d cry for his father forcing her to take him home and fail in her task to get to know him better. “Daddy’s at work, Trav.” Lyndal said reaching out towards him and pulling on his back pack strap to take the bag from him as she’d watched Nash do when he collected his son. “I was thinking you and I could hang out. Maybe do something fun?”
Now she was here with him Lyndal felt all her plans slip away with worry that what she picked he wouldn’t like. “What would you like to do?” She asked with a cheery smile as she stood and proffered her hand to him. Lyndal wanted him to want to be with her like she wanted to be with him. “Maybe we could go and get a snack or head to the beach?” She asked him trying to make them both sound fun. Lyndal planned to meet Nash at the garage in a couple of hours and suddenly that time seemed endless not just because she missed him, but because she wasn’t sure she could entertain Travis that long.

Travis didn’t like that he couldn’t see his father behind Lyndal. He also didn’t see his aunt or uncle, or even his Daddy’s truck. He was hoping that he was just waiting in the car for him. Why did SHE have to be here of all people? Wasn’t it enough that she got all of his father’s attention but now she had to find a way to keep his daddy from seeing him even when he was normally there? He knew she had arranged this. The less time that he spent with his father the more he’d forget about him and not care. Travis wanted to cry but didn’t want to look like a sissy at school, or in front of the mean lady.
Travis frowned again when Lyndal told him that his father was at work. When his father was at work his aunt picked him up. He didn’t like these changes. He wished she’d just go back where she came from. He let her take his backback, used to having whichever grown up picked him up take it for him as it usually ended up a little heavy for him if he brought home any books or his crayons. He didn’t know why she was saying she wanted to hang out with him but just shrugged at the idea, unenthusiastically.
“I want to see my Daddy…how long ‘til he comes home?” He asked her when she asked what he wanted to do. Maybe she could just drop him off at his father’s work. He’d stay there and watch him work on the cars. If Uncle Day was there he’d have chips or candy that he’d give him too. He listened to her suggest a couple options of what they could do. He hated to admit that her ideas didn’t seem all that bad. They actually sounded kind of fun. Or they would have if she wasn’t the one taking him to do those things. “Yeah..I guess…” He sulked.

Lyndal watched the identical, but mini version, of Nashal search behind her she knew he was looking for his dad, his aunt or uncle…anyone but her. It hurt to know he didn’t like her when all she wanted to do was show him how much she loved him and wanted to be apart of he and his father’s lives. It was hard, almost painful, to be away from Nash, but never did she want to take that time away from Travis. This time with Travis had been her idea to maybe talk with him and maybe make her own bond with him.
As she took his backpack she took it as a small step, glad that he hadn’t been stubborn or thrown a tantrum. Lyndal knew their afternoon wasn’t going to be easy, she was prepared for it to be hard but she didn’t want a screaming scene in the school yard. With Nash been at work, it gave the two of them a few hours to be together and see what was going to happen. The shrug was very non committal, but Dal tried not to be disheartened by it comforting herself with the assumption that Travis was tired. “Where would you like to go?” Lyndal asked just as cheerily holding her hand out offering it to him
Her heart ached as Travis asked for his dad. Lyndal wanted to see him too. She felt rejected by Travis and that hurt, she wanted to see Nash to ease that hurt. “Maybe we could go meet him from work in a little while, until then we can have fun. Then you’ll have lots to tell him.” She said trying to sound more cheery then she felt as they walked away from the school. “Maybe we could go shell hunting on the beach or find some cool drift wood. Or we could go home and do some art?” Lyndal tried to think back to the things she’d like to do at that age and think of the things she’d seen other children do. “What would you like to do?” Giving him the option Lyndal only hoped he didn’t insist on just going to his dad, she didn’t want to fail at this.

Travis resigned himself finally to the fact that there was no one else waiting behind Lyndal to pick him up with her. His father hadn't come and either had any of his other family members. He was starting to feel angry towards them for doing this to him. How could they trust someone that they barely knew with coming to get him? She was practically a stranger, and he wasn't supposed to even talk to strangers yet they wanted him to go with her. He stared down at the ground focusing on the dirt in front of him to keep from crying in frustration, determined not to shed a tear, even when all he wanted to do was go home and cry into his father's loving arms. Travis didn't understand why Lyndal was being so cheery. He certainly wasnt happy with the current situation and he was sure that she wasnt either. All she was interested in was stealing Nash away from him. He had him first! It wasn't fair! Travis was sure this was just a ploy to make herself look even better to his father so that it would be easier and easier for her to take him away. Travis wondered if the two of them would move away and he'd be left at his aunt and uncle's home. His father didn't live with his parents, so maybe he wouldn't end up living with his Daddy for long either. The thought made his bottom lip quiver for a second before he scrunched up his face in determination to keep his emotions more hidden while they were still at school. Travis shrugged again as she asked what he wanted to do. He didnt want to do anything with her but see his father, but he didnt think that was a choice.
"Okay" he finally said a little mopey as she said they could meet his dad at work in a little while but they had to do something first. He listened to her ideas and tried to think them over, wondering which one would get him to his father faster. He decided if they stayed outside it would be easier to leave for Nash's work. "I guess the beach could be ok..."

It had been a really long day for Lyndal, she’d forgotten homework in one class and read completely the wrong chapter for another. She wanted to see Nash, to be held by him and feel that everything was going to be ok; as she approached Travis she wanted Nash all the more. Dal had spent little time alone with Travis, normally their time was spent with his father or his aunt and uncle, she hadn’t noticed till then what a buffer those extra people had been. When Travis looked behind her she knew what he was looking and hoping for – his father - the same person she was wishing for. When he looked away from her completely a part of Lyndal crumbled and she began to wonder if this play date was such a good idea, it was clear he didn’t want to spend time with her. She reminded herself this was a bonding time, something they’d both be glad of and better off for eventually. “Travis, I know you’re dad or Uncle and Aunt usually pick you up but I wanted to spend some time with you too. Just you and me.” She smiled trying to sound gentle and erase the nerves from her voice. She reached out and rubbed his arm not daring to hug him as she’s seen Nash do many times.
Back in Australia Lyndal had never taken to the babysitting jobs her friends had, she preferred waiting tables and the odd summer of life guarding. Now she regretted it, she had no experience with children, yet her she was in love with a man who had one of his own. It made no difference, Dal knew she would just try harder. She wanted to be a part of Nash and Travis’ life just as she wanted him to be a part of theirs and maybe, one day, a family.
Glancing around the school yard Lyndal noticed many of the other parents leaving and she was eager to get out too. Part of her felt like a fraud, she had no blood ties to this child yet she was with him. She loved him, Lyndal knew that the moment she’d seen him, just as she’d loved his father at first sight. She was ready to be a family, ready to be Travis’ mother if he’d let her get close. Dal knew it must be hard sharing his father, that was why she’d wanted this time with him.
Lyndal could hear in his voice that he was less then thrilled about the prospect of an afternoon with her, and that hurt. She wanted him to like her, but she knew it would take time and probably more outings like the one they were heading on. “The beach will be great. We can go shell hunting and maybe paddle in the waves, we wont tell your dad.” She said conspiratorially trying to get Travis on side. “When I was your age, I was never out of the water. My mum used to tell me I’d turn into a fish, but I wanted to be a mermaid.” She smiled down at Travis trying to bond over silly stories, though as a child she really did believe she could turn into a fish.

Travis looked back up at her, squinting his eyes against the sunlight as she told him that she had wanted to spend time with him, just the two of them. So this was her fault? She had come up with this idea? He didnt understand it, she was trying to steal his father from him yet she wanted to spend time with her first. He didnt know what she was trying to get from him. "You wanted to pick me up today?" he questioned her, having assumed before that she was just the last one available. "Why?" He asked her plainly.
Travis tried to keep the fact that they would be seeing his father later that day in the back of his head to keep him from getting too upset, but he still was in a bad mood about the situation now. Travis felt weird having Lyndal here. He wondered if her reasoning for being here was just to look good to his father and look like she had made the effort and was being helpful. The better Lyndal looked the worse Travis felt he'd look in the situation.
Travis did like the idea of going into the water at the beach, even if he'd rather be with his father now. He listened to her story about wanting to turn into a mermaid and ended up giggling, then stopping himself covering his mouth not wanting to look like he enjoyed it. "Mermaids aren't reeeeall" he told her.

Lyndal was honestly afraid of spending time with Travis, afraid he wouldn’t like her or want to be with her. She could see by his resistance and look of upset on his face that he didn’t want to be with her like she want to be with him. Dal couldn’t imagine not wanting to spend time with him, Travis was amazing. Even in the little time Dal had spent around the little boy she’d grown very attached to him and wanted him to accept her into his life like she welcomed him into hers. Lyndal also knew how important it was to Nash and for him she was will to be try anything to get along with Travis.
“I thought we could spend some time together, alone. Get to know each other better.” She said offering a bright hopeful smile to the little boy who looked so much like his father, sometimes Lyndal wondered if he had any of his mother in him at all. “I like you a lot, I wanted to steal some time. I thought maybe you could show me your favorite things to do on the Rez” she said trying to leave things up to him for the rest of the afternoon.
Looking at the little version of Nash before her brought the real thing to mind easily and almost painfully. Even though she would see him in just a few hours it was still too long, she felt a need to be held by him. Feeling uncomfortable and unsure of herself alone with his son made her want and need his reassurance and presence and she wondered if Travis could feel that too. Did he want his dad too? In fleeting moments Lyndal considered giving up and just taking Travis to his father so they could both see him, but she wanted to do this for her and Travis and their relationship. Tentatively Lyndal held her hand out, hoping he’s take it and gave them both comfort.
The idea of the beach seem to be a winner with Travis and Lyndal felt a few tension strings relax just a little. As she rambled on about been a child she hoped she wasn’t trying too hard, everything she was saying was true. Thinking back Lyndal could remember Laurie teasing her about her dream of been a mermaid, but she quickly found something to tease him with; Dinosaurs, his little obsession with them for a while.
As Travis giggled Lyndal let forth a giggle of her own realizing it was a silly dream, but one she’d held onto tightly even passed the time of know it couldn’t be true. He was so cute when he laughed and watching him giggle Dal fell a little more in love with the little boy, she wanted this to work so much. Then he stopped and tried not to laugh, she couldn’t stop and reached down to tickle him a little. “You can laugh at me you know, its ok. I know mermaids are real even if you don’t believe me.” She said in a mock serious tone with a look of honesty on her face as she continued to tickle him a little. “You know what else is real? Fairies.” She nodded then started giggling herself.

Travis listened as Lyndal explained her reasoning for wanting to pick him up from school today. He knew grown ups often lied though and wondered if this was just a trick. He didn't think she liked him, she only liked his daddy. He shrugged as she asked him to show her his favorite things to do on the Rez. "Daddy says I'm too little to do a lot of stuff" He told her "But I like the water and making sandcastles" He told her still not sure he believed she actually cared about what he liked to do.
Deciding to go to the beach Travis tried to use what he liked about it as a distraction from not liking his choice of babysitter for the afternoon. He tried not to think about how when they finally did see his father, his daddy would probably want to spend more time with Dal instead of going to play with him.
Even though he didnt want to laugh at her jokes, he did find it funny that she thought she could be mermaid. Trying to stop his own giggles he heard her let out one to match as she told him he could laugh. "They're not real, they're disney" He told her wondering for a moment if she actually did believe it but stifling another giggle. "Fairies arent real either!" he said laughing again and laughing harder as she started to tickle him. He pulled away from her, but ended up falling to the ground, his leg scraping against a rock on its way down.
Travis' eyes quickly filled with tears as his laughing stopped and he let out a whimper leaning foward and holding onto his leg as he started crying, wanting his daddy more than anything. "It hurts!" He yelled out between cries.

Daddy, even Travis mentioning him made Dal miss him. She knew he was a short walk away just across the Rez in the garage, but it felt like a world away to her, and she could tell it was the same for Travis. “You’re bigger then I was at your age. I was short and scrawny.” she told him honestly remembering she was always smaller then her brother, even now. When he suggested sandcastles Dal remembered she enjoyed that too, spending hours making little towns out of sand. “Well there isn’t a height limit on that, come on we’ll make a whole town.” she said excitedly. She wanted to pull him towards the beach happy to share something with him.
Sand castle might while away a few hours and Lyndal hoped it would distract them both from missing Nash. She didn’t want to be wishing away her time with Travis, but she found herself doing just that. Dal consoled herself with the fact that it was merely nerves of her first time alone with him when they shared no real common ground.
Mermaids made him smile and even laugh and Dal couldn’t help but see it as a small victory and step in their budding relationship. “Not just Disney, they’re real.” she said nodding and trying to keep a straight face even as she broke down into giggles along with Travis. Their giggles filled the air as they laughed about fairies. Part of Lyndal still liked to believe in the mystical things like fairies and mermaids. She found herself question their mythical existence more now that she knew Nash’s secret.
Reaching out to tickle Travis Lyndal was smiled at the fleeting contact he let her have before he pulled away. In the few seconds it took to happen Lyndal hardly moved it all seemed to happen in an agonizingly slow motion. There was no time to reach out to him, no time to move to catch him. All Dal could do was watch as Nash’s son, the one he trusted her with fell to the floor colliding with a harsh rock as he fell. Her stomach lurched and her heart raced as he hit the floor.
Lyndal couldn’t move, she felt frozen and didn’t know what to do as he hit the dust ground. Then he cried and his eyes flooded with tears and everything in her kicked into place. She rushed to him moving in front of him before the words left his lips, pulling him to her as he spoke. Lyndal wrapped her arms around him, “I know, I know. Its ok, I’m here.” she soothed surprised at how natural it felt to sooth him and how easily it came to her.
Shifting his weight on her bent legs Lyndal reached out for his leg to check the cut she knew would be there. A graze bleeding already that mixed with the dust, grit and dried grass from the ground. As his tears still fell and his knee bled Lyndal remembered a rhyme her mother used to say to her whenever she fell or got hurt. “Yellow, blue and green little bean, don’t cry . Yellow, blue and green lets keep those eyes dry. Yellow, blue and green little bean, lets fly; Away to the place where boo boos all hide. Little bean, don’t cry, dry your eyes lets fly.” Lyndal whispered the words gently into his hair as she rocked him and rubbed his back remembering how her mother would pick her up and “fly” her or carry her til the tears stopped and the injury was all forgotten, but she wasn’t sure she could do that with Travis just yet.

Travis missed his father. He didn't want to be with Lyndal when he thought he had any possible choice of being with his father instead. But he didnt want to upset his father either by being a crybaby and not doing as he was told. He didnt want him mad at him or to give his father any reason to want to pick spending time with Lyndal over himself. So he tried to keep his whining under control, as hard as it was for him right now. "Girls are supposed to be shorter" He said, explaining why she was shorter than him. He knew that their were a couple girls in his class that were taller than the boys, but they were just weird in his mind. When she told him they could make a whole town Travis nodded. "I'm going to make a castle for me and daddy" He said not even wanting her living in his pretend sandcastle home with him and his father.
The talk of mermaids was a lighter conversation and one he allowed himself to laugh at, "If they're real how come I've never seen one?" He asked her knowing that it couldnt be real anymore than faeries could.
Travis laughed initially when she began tickling him, but his laughter soon ended after he pulled away and found himself falling down against the rock. His leg hurt, even as he tried to cover the painful area with his tiny hands. It made him feel all the more miserable knowing that the one person he wanted to comfort him right now wasn't here. Despite not wanting to cry in front of her, the combination of the pain and missing his father made the tears spill out of him as he sobbed on the ground. He saw the blood start seeping out of his leg and wished his father was there to make it all better.
He didnt even notice at what point Lyndal moved over to his side, too consumed by his crying to notice much else around him until she put her arms around him and started talking to him. He was tense at first still sobbing, nervous the moment she went to look at it, afraid she was going to make it feel worse. Then she started whispering something in his ear. At first it didnt make sense, but slowly he began to like the little rhyme. His cries got a little softer as she finished and he turned into her body clutching at her shirt as he attempted a comforting hug. "Lyndle..."He sniffled.

It wasn’t lost on Lyndal that she was invited to live in the sandcastle home with Travis and Nash, she tried not to let it hurt reminding herself that her time with him was to work towards changing that mind set. The last thing Dal would ever want to do would be to push Travis out, she wanted to bring them all together just like she knew Nash wanted too. “Maybe we can make a castle for all of us. And a place for Kele and Day near by?” She suggested hoping he wouldn’t outright refuse to her inclusion, she wasn’t sure she could cope with that kind of rejection. “Or we could build lots of little houses next to each other?” she said hoping to distract him with the idea of building.
“Only people that believe in them can see them, I used to see them all the time when I surfed. I’ll point one out to you if we see on today.” she said with a cheeky smile enjoying their joking and the connection it created.
Lyndal felt sick with worry and heart ache. After the time practically froze when he fell she couldn’t get to his side quick enough wanting to just hold him and make it ok. Dal knew she wasn’t his father, and knew he probably wouldn’t want her but she knew she had to try. Part of her hoped he’d accept her hug and realize she wanted to help and hold him.
As the graze started to bleed she was glad to see it wasn’t bad. And he didn’t scream when she moved his leg slightly so she was happy to see it wasn’t broken. Small mercies. Lyndal worried what Nash would say, he’d hurt himself in her care. She worried if Travis would blame her, she had been tickling him. She should have held on to him, she should have been more careful. All these worries and critiques ran through her mind as she held him to her.
His cried soften down to a sob then sniffles as the little body in her arms turned to clutch at her. Lyndal thought her heart would break with love as he gripped her shirt deepening their hug, when he sniffed out her name she smiled and kissed his head before speaking, “You ok bean?” she asked gently using the same name her mum would use for her when she was hurt. Dal didn’t want to break the spell they had there together sat on the dusty wet ground, she didn’t want to move and break the comfort she felt and hoped he felt too. The only other time she felt so right was in Nash’s arms, now she felt the same contentment and completeness holding Travis. She gripped him a little tighter and rubbed his back. “We should go get that nasty cut cleaned up. Shall we go see daddy?” she asked gently knowing Nash should know about the fall sooner rather then later. “We can come to the beach later.” she said kissing his head again and leaving it up to him if he wanted to go yet or not.

Travis frowned as Lyndal included herself in the us that would live in his sand castle. He did like the idea of having his Uncle Day nearby. "Uncle Day can live next door with Kele" He told her. "The other houses can be smaller, we should have the big one" He said, intending his we to mean his father and Uncle Day's house, not hers but not mentioning her at all. If he had his way she'd go back to Australia, wherever that was.
"The water here is too cold for mermaids" Travis said still not sure he believed her that she could see them but thinking they wouldnt come to LaPush if they did.
Once he had fallen, his entire focus was on the pain in his leg and the urgent need he had to see his father to make it all better. He was sobbing and in more emotional distress than physical at this point. But his cries softened as she put her arms around him and began reciting the rhyme. It calmed him and he clung to her, just needing someone right now to make it better, despite how he had felt about her moments earlier. He liked the rhyme and it had taken his mind off of his pain.
He sniffled as she called him bean asking him if he was ok. He nodded, though his lower lip still quivered a little. He leaned against her as she held him and gave a big nod as she asked if they should go see his daddy.

The frown said it all, Lyndal knew he didn’t want her living in their real house et alone his make believe sand home where he could have anything. For a moment she wondered if he’d want his real mother back whether he knew her or not. It hurt her to know she wasn’t wanted, she wanted him and wanted to be wanted by him. She knew the ‘we’ he used didn’t include her. “Yea Day and Kele need to be close by.” She said not including herself anymore for fear of further rejection.
“They just wear their winter fins.” she smiled. He was right the water here was cold, infact everything was cold. The temperature was something she was really finding hard to adjust too form the heat of home.
Gathering him into her arms felt so right and he felt so much smaller then he looked. She rocked him feeling as if it was the most natural thing in the world. The rhyme that came to mind was something she hadn’t heard since she was a child, but whispering it in his hair as she held him made sense, she just hoped it was working. Shifting into a kneeling position Dal didn’t ask if Travis needed to be carried, she went with her gut and scooped him up to her hip as she stood. Bending slightly once more she shifted the bags onto her shoulder and headed off towards the garage. “We’ll go see daddy and he’ll make it better.” Lyndal said reaching up to rub his head trying to get him to rest it on her shoulder for more comfort. “It’s going to be ok Trav.” She said kissing his head again and hugging him tigher.
