Laurie could see the fire in Matt's eyes spring up immediately as he told her how he wanted things to stay as they'd been. Obviously this was the wrong thing to say to her. It only lit the fire to upset her more, something he had wished he could have avoided. She was the one person that he didnt want to upset or hurt in anyway, but seeing her like this he knew he had done both.
"But nothing has changed! Or at least it doesnt have to if we dont want it to" Laurie said again confused as she talked about finding out and not being able to go back. "Matt, believe me if you knew how I felt, you'd know I want to be with you forever. " He said wondering if he had taken things too slowly with her. It had been hard for him to be ready to make that commitment again after the pain it caused him the last time. But now he wasn't even engaged and the thought of losing her hurt so much worse than anything in New York had.
Once he realized the miscommunication that had occured and the wrong way in which she had interpreted the visit from his sister, all of his focus turned solely to trying to convince her that he was still someone she could trust. That he hadn't hurt her like she thought and that she shouldnt give up on him ,or their relationship. His eyes pleaded for her understanding as he explained and only hoped that their desperation didnt look like a guilty lie to her.
Her response was soft, and he wasn't sure if she had believed him or not. He didnt know if she had decided if she had yet. He gave her a few moments to digest the information "I would never do that to you" He said softly after a few moments, wishing she'd believe him. She then covered her face and his heart dropped, feeling as though she couldnt even look at him anymore. Her next words surprised him as she apologized and looked guilty before stepping towards him.
Laurie's heart began to race, hoping this meant that she had accepted his explaination. He stepped forward and tentatively put his hands on her arms, though wanting to take her into a full embrace, but worried she was still upset. "You have nothing to be sorry for...does this mean you believe me? I swear to you I'd never cheat on you"

Matt’s brow fell further at Laurie’s attempt to fix what had stoked her anger in the first place. He just didn’t seem to get it! And she had always pinned him down as such a compassionate, caring and empathic man. Maybe it was because he simply didn’t care for her that much anymore, despite his emotional words to her since he had arrived at her home. She bowed her head at what sounded to her like a half-assed attempt to appease her sensibilities and live the best of both worlds. Why couldn’t he see that seeing another woman was a change as far as she was concerned and that no matter how much she tried to kid herself that she could live with sharing her boyfriend with another woman, it would just never work – she wasn’t that kind of person.
“I don’t understand,” she said, enunciating with her hands as he told her that he wanted to be with her forever. “I thought I did know how you feel, but if you wanted to be with me then why do this to me? Why lie? You could at least be honest about it!” Wires were well and truly crossed, but Matt couldn’t see that. She saw the confusion in her boyfriend’s face, but she couldn’t work out why he would be confused and with emotion running so high she didn’t have the capacity at that time to figure it out.
Once the situation had become untangled to a degree, Matt could barely look at him out of guilt and fresh tears flooded her eyes as she regretted her hasty untrusting thoughts. She didn’t know how he could forgive her for thinking so ill of him. This meant that he did feel strongly for her, that she could trust him and that she had nothing to worry about. But wasn’t accusing someone of cheating almost as bad as doing it? She tipped her head up to meet his gaze, her cheeks flooded with colour as he told her that he would never cheat on her and she shook her head a little. “That’s what I thought…”
Feeling Laurie’s hands on her arms instantly comforted her, as contact with him always did, but then she began doubting. She wondered if he was avoiding holding her too close from anger or disappointment at her behaviour – she wouldn’t be surprised if he was angry at her; as far as she was concerned she deserved it. However, he then reassured her with his words and she almost leapt at him, wrapping her arms around his neck and holding him close. “I know you wouldn’t, I knew it…” she paused. “That’s partly why it hurt so much… It took the bottom out of my world. I am so, so sorry. I just saw you give her that ring and my imagination did the rest. Oh Laurie, I am really sorry.”

Laurie watched her bow her head and couldnt figure out quite yet why she had been so upset. Why did things have to change in their relationship, why couldnt things stay the same? At least until he had a chance to propose, then hoped things would change for the better, but from the way this conversation was going he wondered if they'd even still be dating at the end of the day. He knew he'd feel destroyed if she left him now.
"Lie? I am being honest, I dont know what you think I'm lying to you about" Laurie said utterly confused as she told him she didnt understand. He tried to wrack his brain with anything he may have said to her in the last few days that was anything but the truth. He couldnt think of anything more than maybe telling her he wasn't tired after being overworked at the hospital.
Once the situation and the confusion made sense to him, he knew he had to try to get her to understand it as well. The idea that she could think he had met with another woman, on a romantic level was one that he couldnt let her keep for an instant longer. He knew both of them had close first hand experience with that pain and would never want to be the one to cause her to feel it again. He explained the identity of the mystery woman but couldnt be sure she believed him. He didnt know if he'd believe her if the situation were reversed. It was hard to trust when you'd been hurt in the past. He knew he'd never see a woman on the side, but could she really believe that? The way she could barely look at him made him think she couldnt.
He heard her admit that she had thought he'd never cheat. "Its the truth...and if you give me a chance I'll prove to you that you can trust me...somehow" He said not sure exactly how one proved that they weren't sneaking around. Even a cheater could say nothing was going on and could get believed if they were a good enough liar. Thinking of this did nothing to comfort Laurie that he'd be able to earn her trust.
Being able to touch her again felt comforting, though the fear of losing her had not yet passed. A misunderstanding could very easily lead to a breakup, though he hoped it wouldnt. He still couldnt believe she was apologizing and knew that would never do, trying immediately to convince her not to. She reacted by putting her arms around his neck and he responded, holding her closer.
"I didnt and I wouldnt...I love you too much to hurt you like that...and I would never even want to be with another woman" He told her freezing a little as she mentioned having seen the ring. He tensed up as he pulled away slightly, though keeping contact with her. If she saw the ring it was no wonder she thought there was more going on. But how could he explain that and tell her the truth without giving away the surprise. "Oh you saw that...I....it all looked bad I'm sure...you have nothing to be sorry for. I'm really sorry you had to see that and feel that" He said his voice full of guilt.
