{Baya Age 15}
Nawat had graduated from high school just over a month ago and yet he hadn’t seen any of his family since that day. It may seem uncaring of him to take off straight after the rather momentous occasion that brought the family together (they already knew that they weren’t going to see him graduate from any college), but he had told his little sister that he was going to go off as soon as he got the chance. School had always been something that had stood in the way of his itchy, wandering feet, and now that he was done he had no desire to confine himself any longer.
That was all over a month ago, though, and beyond an odd short call to his sister to assure her that he was alright, and to make sure that she was also doing well, he had no contact with them. He hitched his rucksack, which was surprisingly small considering how long he had been away, up his shoulder and lifted a hand to signal thanks to the man that he had hitch hiked with to the periphery of La Push itself. Now that was a lucky break if ever there was one, but he still had a good half hour hike to get back to the house and no doubt face parental disappointment.
A full half hour later with a light sheen of rain water glossing his skin and messy black hair, Nat approached his front door, keen dark eyes noticing the lack of parental vehicles in the doorway. Excellent. He pushed at the front door, turning the handle and nodded as it opened immediately. There was a good chance that his baby sister was home that way, always a pleasure.
“Baya!” he called, pushing the door carelessly closed behind him and plopping his muddy backpack on to the ground. He kicked his equally muddy boots off and stalked further into the house, trying to figure out where his little sister was hiding. A grin played on his features as he positioned himself at the bottom of the stairs. “You’d better not have a boy up there, young lady,” he called up, putting on a high voice to emulate their mother. “Or I’ll kick his ass,” he added, in his normal, lazy tone.

Things had been lonely for Baya around the house ever since her older brother Nawat left after graduation. It just seemed empty without him there even though she still had her parents and their younger brother their. She loved his phone calls to her and it made her special that he would call to talk to her just to make sure she was okay and wouldnt be worrying about him. She always felt close to him. But even with the calls it didnt stop her worrying completely or make her miss him any less. She wondered if he'd ever move back home.
That afternoon her parents were at work and her younger brother was off at his friends house so she had her house to herself. She was enjoying the day, school had let out for the summer so she didn't have to study and was instead reading a teen magazine while Dexter slept on the end of her bed.
She heard the door downstairs open and assumed it was her little brother home early, she didnt pay any attention assuming he'd be running upstairs any minute but instead she heard her name being called. She'd recognize it anywhere and jumped off the bed. She laughed as he mimicked their mother then went back to his own voice threatening to kick the ass of any boy she was upstairs with.
"Eeeeeee!!" She squealed with enthusiasm as she ran downstairs, hardly able to believe he was actually back home. "Nat you're home!" She exclaimed as soon as she saw him, giving him a big hug. "Dont worry about the boy, I told him to crawl out the window when I heard you coming" She joked with him.

A low chuckle erupted from Nawat’s throat as he heard the excited sound emanate from his little sister’s room and continue non-stop as she raced down the stairs to meet with him. From anyone else he would find the inordinate level of enthusiasm annoying, but this was Baya and he loved hi little sister unconditionally. He held out an arm as she launched herself at him for a hug. Despite how tired he was after his long trek/hitch hike back to La Push, he still managed to catch Baya’s weight easily, barely even rocking to absorb the shock of impact.
“Ah, that’s alright then, the traps and snares I lay out before I left will get him, then,” he laughed as she quipped about getting boys out of her room. “And yes, I certainly… am home. The soles of my boots wore out, and one of the handles of the rucksack, so it looks like I’ll be homeward bound for a while now. Unless you think the parents would pay for new ones?”
A wry smile pulled at one corner of his mouth as he considered his own question. He had left graduation after only warning little sis that he was bailing on the Rez for a few weeks – he didn’t even have definite plans for return this time. He had been scheduled to go to some special dinner with the parents and a couple of extended family members once the ceremony was done, but Nat really couldn’t be doing with that. He had been expressly forbidden from leaving town for months before his final SATs and it had left him feeling more than a little stir crazy. He grimaced a little and stared his sister straight in the eye.
“They’re going to lock me up, aren’t they?” he asked, his brow furrowed a little after the initial excitement of seeing his sister again. He had been in more than a few scrapes due to his stray-like tendencies, but he was eighteen now, a graduate of high school (just), surely that meant he could do as he liked? Well, in theory.

Baya laughed as Nawat spoke of leaving traps outside for any guys that might be crawling out her window. Her smile widened as he said that he was definitely home. "I'll hide your boots and your rucksack if that's all it takes to keep you home for awhile" She told him giving him one more hug before pulling back so they could talk easier.
She looked him over from top to bottom, making sure that he looked okay. He was thin, but then he always had been, and his hair had grown out a little bit otherwise he still looked like he had done okay. "At least you don't look too much worse for wear, how are you?" She said with honest concern, even if he was her older brother she still worried for him too. It was why he'd call her while he was away.
"They might lock you up once they get over the shock of you being back" She said honestly, knowing that her parents weren't too happy about the way that Nat just headed off without giving them much warning, and after that had forbid him from doing so. "But really how long can they keep you locked up?"
She heard the floorboards from upstairs creak from the direction of her room. She knew that her puppy had woken from his nap and was probably looking around her room for her. "Actually Nat...there is a guy up in my room" She said more seriously giving him an innocent smile. "He was asleep on my bed, but I think he woke up...you've gotta meet him, I'm already in love"

Nawat wrinkled his nose at his little sister’s threat to hide his boots and his backpack to stop him from leaving again. He didn’t like the sound of that; he hated feeling trapped anywhere. He also felt a twinge of guilt at abandoning her for so long a stretch with only a little warning. His expression softened a little and he gave her a light apologetic look, which he would never lower himself to give to anyone else he knew, Baya being the only one to penetrate his stubbornness.
“Sorry, Little Bit,” he said, hugging her one final time with feeling. He gave her a small smile. “Maybe one day, when you’re all growed up and stuff you’ll be able to come with me one time… unless you think you couldn’t handle it… Though I’m not sure how the ‘rents would react if we both disappeared…”
An amused smile twitched at the corner of his mouth as he noticed her scanning him from top to bottom with caring brown eyes, so reminded of his mother in that act. Or of the way that he would look at any scrapes and grazes Baya got when they were little, him being a very grown up three years older. He shrugged a little to her question, looking nonchalant. “Same old, same old,” he said, though his eyes took on a faraway look of memory. “There were good times had… It can be so beautiful out there alone and I got so far this time before I had to turn back.” His mouth twisted, eyes darkening slightly. “There was a storm though and… well, a lot of my equipment got wrecked in it.”
He chuckled a little at Baya’s response to the likelihood of their parents locking him up. He knew he ought to feel bad for putting his parents through so much upheaval when he upped and left, but he couldn’t figure out a way in which they would actually allow him to go, so he just did without telling them. “Oh I don’t know, maybe if I have someone on the inside working for me I’ll just about get out for Christmas.”
Nat’s eyes looked upwards as a creaking from directly above – Baya’s room – interrupted their conversation. His suspicion was immediately aroused, knowing that she was confident and popular and pretty and that the guys in her year would be getting to the stage where they would be wanting to take advantage of such assets. He gave her a poignant look, his protectiveness confused by her teasing tone.
“If it’s really a guy,” he said, his protective tone evident through his tone. “I am going to kick his ass. Just what have you been up to while I’ve been away, Lil Sis?” He half smiled at her, though he was a little cautious in case she really was falling for someone so young. He started up the stairs at an energetic jog.

Baya saw his apologetic look and knew it was the best she was getting from him, and was lucky to get that much. "I just missed you, but I'm glad you're okay, and got to do your own thing" She told him. Even if it was hard on her she knew she'd feel too guilty if he stayed behind and was miserable just because of her desire to have her brother close.
She smiled as he suggested that one day she could maybe go with him. "Really? You'd let me go with you?" She said a bit surprised at the idea that he'd let anyone go with him when he seemed to be running from them and their family. "I could definitely handle it, and as long as we give them warning we're leaving, they can handle it"
Baya got worried as she listened to him talk about the storm. If his equipment got damaged, he could have easily been hurt in it. "Maybe its not so safe out there for you either..." She said, trying not to sound too much like their parents. She was worried that the next time he went off he might stop calling her if she was too much of a nag.
"Well if they lock you in your room I'll make sure to slide you some of the good food under the door...halloween candy, christmas cookies, thanksgiving turkey....you'll be there awhile if they have their way" She joked with him.
Baya watched her brothers eyes look up as he heard the floorboards creak. She had to fight to keep a straight face as she led him to believe it was a boy in her room. She wasn't lying, it was male, just not the type he was thinking of. " Nat, Don't scare him or hurt him...he's just so cute...and loveable" She said following him up the stairs at a quick pace, wanting to see his face as he opened the door.

Nawat’s apologetic look quickly shifted itself into an easy smile as Baya admitted that she missed him and that she was glad that he got to do his own thing. He honestly didn’t know what he would do if he was for some reason tied down too much to the same boring place, he had such restless feet and never really felt comfortable in one place for long. “It means a lot to me,” he told her as an explanation for his constant travelling.
He nodded as his sister questioned his invitation to go travelling with him. True, it wasn’t an invitation he’d extend to anyone else, but he knew someone that shared his blood could handle the survivalist treks he went on and what she didn’t know already would probably be good for her to learn. He knew that Baya was popular and presented herself well to her friends in a way that he never bothered to do, but she had mettle and would never let him down. Plus he would only take her away for a little while and wouldn’t make her do anything she didn’t want to, even if the earth pulled him in that direction.
“Of course I would!” he exclaimed, punching her lightly on her shoulder as if she had said the most preposterous thing. He wasn’t entirely sure that their parents would be okay with him taking her off though, unless they made firm plans about where they were going, stayed on recognised trails and checked in every day. And that sort of defied the whole point – something that they just didn’t understand. “Maybe we could leave them a note or something…”
He knew he would regret telling his little sister about the storm, or at least that it was severe enough to break some of his equipment, and a slight stubborn frown creased his brow partially. He tutted, “Tch … no storm could fell me – the equipment broke like it was supposed to – it was doing its job. Safe as houses out there.” He smiled at her reassuringly.
Baya talking about all the food that she would post under his door while he was imprisoned reminded Nat of a very important fact: he was starving. He placed a hand on his well-toned stomach. “Ooph, thanks Baya,” he said, his mouth almost watering. He laughed a little. “If it goes too far you might need to bake a file into a cake for me to escape with!”
Once the floorboards started creaking upstairs, directly where Baya’s room was, Nat’s attention was quickly switched from his empty stomach to what was going on upstairs. He surveyed his sister’s expression, but it was strangely blank. His eyes narrowed in suspicion as he jogged upstairs and he swung open the bedroom door. Eyes scanning the scene, looking for a human perpetrator, they came up empty, until he noticed a puppy which came swiftly out of the room to tackle his mistress. He whirled around, “Oh you!” he said, his voice amused and slightly relieved. He grabbed his sister into a mock headlock, which probably wasn’t that pleasant seen as he hadn’t showered yet, and began to mess up her hair like he did when they were kids.

Baya nodded as Nat told him that his traveling meant a lot to him. She tried to understand it, even amid her own missing him each time he left. She wanted him to be happy, but she knew part of her would never fully understand why he couldn't be happy and be on the reservation where she was. It shocked her as he extended an invitation for her to join him and she really couldnt be sure he actually meant it or just said it in passing.
Her face lit up as he confirmed that he did mean it and would take her. "We'd have a blast!" She told him laughing as he suggested they leave their parents a note of where they were going. She knew they'd flip if she pulled something like that, but something in that idea of just doing something spontaneous and a bit rebellious really sounded all the more fun to her at the moment. "They'd be so mad....but I'm sure they'd get over it...it would be so exciting to be out their on our own!" She said suddenly understanding a bit more of what he must feel.
"I don't think the equipment was meant to break...but just make sure you dont break on me okay?" She said still worried about him. As they talked about food the mood lightened a bit as he suggested her baking a cake with a file in it, she let out a laugh. "I would but I'm afraid you might not stop eating it to find it!"
It was all Baya could do to contain herself and keep a straight face as she heard the floorboards creaking and led her brother to believe it was a boy in her room. She liked seeing that he was still her protective big brother, even when she didnt think he needed to be. It let her know he still loved her. Baya quickly followed Nat up the stairs to make sure he didnt barge in too harshly and scare the poor puppy. As soon as the door opened, Baya started giggling seeing Dexter with his tail wagging, running out towards her as Nawat put her in a headlock. She kept laughing. "Ewww, it stinks under here! You're gonna mess up my hair!" She said twisting her way out of it while the boxer puppy kept jumping up on her for attention. She scooped him up, as he was still young enough to be picked up, so that Nat could see. "This is the boy that's gotten my heart while you've been away. This is Dexter, Mom and Dad let me get him while you were gone"
