{Mid-Breaking Dawn} Elizabeth Harvey glanced into the rear view mirror of her moderate hatchback car to check on her angelically blonde haired son. He looked happy as ever with his fingers hooked over the door and messing up the window with his inexplicably sticky four-year-old fingers. His vividly blue eyes scanned the passing landscape as they sped out of Forks towards the La Push reservation. It had been a difficult decision for Elizabeth to make, to take her son out of the day care in Forks and agree for him to be cared for in La Push.
She had been sick of picking Francis up from day care with no toys left or having him tell her how he had given his candy away. Oh, he had never cried about it, barely even complained, but Elizabeth couldn’t just let the other kids take advantage of him. She knew that he would most likely be the odd one out at the day care in La Push, but it was only another few months before he began in kindergarten and it was lovely of the day care to take a non-local at such short notice.
“Mommy,” Francis said suddenly, a questioning whine in his voice. “Why’m I going to the beach today?”
“It’s not the beach, honey,” Elizabeth replied. “You’re going to a new day care like the one in Forks.”
Francis nodded his head, which Elizabeth just about caught in the rear view mirror and the car lapsed into silence for the rest of the ride.
******
A few minutes later, Elizabeth pulled up outside the day care centre, quite early, and shepherded her son out of the car. Taking his hand, she held the door open for the little pale blonde boy and led him to the rather large, imposing looking man setting up. No wonder the kids here were reputed to be so well behaved, she didn’t think even she would date to put a toe out of line with him here. Undeterred, she approached him with her head held high and little Francis gazed up at him with wide blue eyes, full of wonder.
“Woooow, mommy… he’s a giant!”
“Francis, remember your manners, young man,” Elizabeth reprimanded before addressing Connor and holding her free hand out to him. “You must be Mr. Wikitawa. I’m Elizabeth Harvey – we spoke on the phone a few days ago. Is everything still okay for Francis starting here today?”

Connor stood over by the main desk in the daycare center and ran his fingers through his hair as he looked over the schedule for today trying to make sure there was a good balance between playtime and constructive activities that the kids might learn something from. He looked up when he saw the door open and a woman came in with a new boy who he didn't know yet. He had spoken to the woman a few days ago on the phone so he knew that this was the newest member of the daycare. It was unusual for someone from Forks to come down to the reservation but she had explained the situation of the kids taking advantage of him and Connor did what he could to get her son into the daycare here.
Connor grinned as the little boy looked up at him and called him a giant. He was taller than most, due mostly to his wolf genes (something he was sure that the woman wouldn't want to know about when dropping off her son in his care). Connor tried to look a little less intimidating as he smiled down at the boy. He knew most adults got a bad first impression of him, but he tried to make sure at least the kids didn't. They usually didnt judge as quickly. "Not quite a giant but I am pretty tall, it's cause I ate all my vegetables" He said figuring he could at least set a good example for the boy.
"Yes I am, Mrs Harvey, its nice to meet you" Connor said shaking her hand as she introduced herself. "Yep, we're all ready for Francis to start. Does he have any allergies we should be watching out for? Or medications he needs to take during the day?" He asked, making sure he had the basic information from the mother before she took off. He then looked back down to the little boy addressing him. "We're really excited to have you here Francis. We're gonna have a great time"

Francis continued to look up at this new giant man that he had found, or his mommy had found for him, wondering just what it would like to be all the way up there. He wondered if the man could see the North Pole and whether he could tell what the elves were making for Christmas that year. A small quiver of excitement shot through his system as Connor insinuated that it was possible to get to be a giant too. He wiggled his toes in delight, grinning a beaming smile up at him, though his face soon fell when he mentioned vegetables.
“Oh,” he said, his lips reshaping into a slight pout. “Vegetwubles… Not chocolate cake? Hmm… but I could get a giant friend!”
Elizabeth shook her head a little at her boy’s point blank refusal to eat vegetables of his own volition, but appreciated the man’s attempt at a good example. Perhaps he wasn’t so bad as his appearance made him seem to be. She extended a little shrug to excuse her son’s behaviour and nodded with a small smile.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Mr. Wikatawa – so good of you to fit him in at such short notice. Thank you,” she said, genuinely pleased to have found somewhere else for Francis to go get his day care from. She reached into her purse as Connor asked his question about allergies and medicines and pulled out an inhaler and a tub of tablets. Francis looked up and scrunched up his nose, clearly not happy at the exchange going on above his head.
“He shouldn’t really need these, but just in case… He’s asthmatic, so if you’re planning anything where he’ll exert himself and he has a mild nut allergy. I prepared some lunch for him too, just in case…” She looked down into her purse once more to pull out a hastily made sandwich, made when Elizabeth had remembered that the new day care didn’t know about Francis’ allergies. “The antihistamine tablets should be enough if he accidentally ingests a nut, but he’s fine environmentally.”
Francis craned his neck all the way back, exaggerating the movement so that he could continue to convince himself of the awesome tallness of the man before him and he grinned back up, also excited to be in a new place. “Do we gets to go to the beach?”

Connor let out a deep laugh as Francis pointed out that he'd prefer chocolate cake to vegetables but then added that he could get a giant friend. "You and I can definitely be friends" He said with a smile. "And there's no reason a giant can't eat both vegetables and chocolate cake, I like my cake with ice cream, what about you?" He asked the kid, glad to see the child was outgoing and friendly and not clinging shyly behind his mother, likely to be one of the criers they often got.
"You can call me Connor, you both can" Connor told Mrs. Harvey as she said it was nice to meet him. The woman had manners a lot of the adults lacked when they met him. At least she was trying. Connor then nodded accepting the medicine she handed over "We'll keep them both close by in case he needs them, and we'll watch out to make sure he's not trading food with someone who's bringing in nuts." Connor said making a note in the file in front of him so that Simone would see it later as well.
Connor looked back down at Francis with a smile as he asked about going to the beach. "We're not going today but on warm days we sometimes take a walk down there"

Francis giggled along with Connor’s deep laugh, though he wasn’t entirely sure of what he was laughing at. Vegetables were gross, they tasted of plants and if he wasn’t supposed to eat worms or grass then he definitely wasn’t supposed to eat plants. They were dirty! Chocolate cake was baked by grandmas and that meant it must be good, he simply didn’t understand his mother’s reluctance to give it to him when he wanted it.
“Do they make vegetwubles out of anything else than gween?” he asked with misgiving. His mouth twisted into a thoughtful expression and he frowned as he gave the predicament some good thinking. “I miiiight try,” he conceded eventually. “How long does it take to be a giant?”
Distracted once more by the thought of his favourite dessert, the boisterous and bright smile returned to his features, brightening his electric blue eyes. “I love nice cweam!” he almost yelled in his excitement. He turned his gaze up to his mother. “But Mommy doesn’t let me have both at the same time. Seeee, Mommy! Mister Connor still has teef! And he likes chocolate cake and nice cweam!”
Elizabeth more or less ignored her son, for it was impossible to fight against his incredible sweet tooth, and instead to her mind to more serious matters. Francis soon became bored with the grown up conversation with long words that he didn’t know and he began to make up look around the room with interest. He wondered if this day care would have the same toys as the last one. He hoped that there’d be some new ones too. And somebody fun to play with.
“Thank you, Connor,” Elizabeth replied to Connor’s polite remark. He could certainly show off good manners, whether they came naturally to him or not. She quickly and efficiently handed Francis’ medicines over to the tall man and watched as he wrote the notes down on her son’s file. She trusted that whatever authority it was had passed the rather questionable looking man in his suitability for the job, but being able to see that he was making notes for his colleagues was also reassuring. She had already begun to teach her son not to make assumptions on people before he had gotten to know them, but sometimes stereotypes were too ingrained to ignore.
“Awwww,” Francis responded to Connor’s diplomatic answer. “But it’s never warm here…” The moaning stopped abruptly, though, as he realised what the day care giver had said, that they sometimes go. His mouth fell open a little and his eyes widened in awe. They never got to do anything so awesome as that in his old day care. He laughed a little to himself in delight, so excited.
Elizabeth glanced at her watch and frowned a little, realising that she was actually running a little later than she had thought. She looked down at her son, hoping that he would be alright in a couple of hours time when the excitement had died down – he was going to be shattered, but he was an excitable boy, there wasn’t much anyone could do about that. She bent down next to the small boy.
“Honey, I’ve got to go to work now. I’ll pick you up later, okay?” she asked, her equally blue eyes looking into the blonde boy’s face to make sure that there would be no tears. She should be so lucky. Francis turned to her and nodded with a smile.
“Bye bye, Mommy,” he almost squealed, throwing his short arms around her neck for about two seconds before letting go and wandering off to something else that had caught his eye.
Elizabeth straightened up, shaking her head slightly at her son’s behaviour, though the corners of her mouth turned up good-naturedly. She looked up at the tall man again. “Unless there is anything else, Connor, thanks again,” she held out her hand once more and took her leave from the day care to hurry away to another day at the office.

Connor continued to chuckle as the little boy asked if vegetables could be anything else but green. It was one of the reasons he liked kids, they were adorable and so innocent in their questions. "There are some non-green vegetables...like carrots, or tomatos" Connor told him. "It took me 19 years to get this big, but you wont have that many more to get this big, you're already on your way"
Connor smirked as the little boy called it nice cream instead of ice cream. He didn't interject anything as the boy pointed out to his mother that Connor ate cake and ice cream and still had teeth. He didnt want to get in any trouble with the mother for agreeing with her son. From the looks of her she was already ignoring the boy anyway.
"You're welcome" He replied to her thanks, taking the medicine from her and making his notes. He looked back down as the boy complained about how it was never warm there. "We take advantage of the sunny days we do get, we go by warm for the reservation standards"
Connor watched as the mother looked at her watch, obviously ready to go. "We're all set, don't worry, he'll have a great time here" He assured her as she left. He then bent down to Francis' level. "We're gonna have some fun and I'm sure you'll make some friends, but if you have any problems, you can always come to me, okay? " He let the boy know, wanting him to know he had a friend here already.

Francis paused, his blue eyes turning up as he thought about the vegetables that Connor had mentioned. He’d forgotten about those ones! And he did really really like carrots before they’d been cooked – but once they were on his dinner plate they were all gross and mushy. The corners of his mouth turned down perilously as the tall man told him that it had taken him nineteen years to get so giant. That was foreveeer! He couldn’t wait that long, it was aaages. However, as soon as he was told that he was on his way the ominous expression changed and he beamed up at him.
“Really, really?” he asked, bouncing excitedly. He was going to be a giant soon! He decided there and then to get his mom to measure him every single day so that he could tell when he would be able to see all the way across the town when he stood up.
Francis’ thoughts were now rooted firmly on chocolate cake and ice cream. The thought of the sticky icing and the soft middle and the cold, smooth ice cream made his mouth water all the time, even straight after dinner. He hoped that maybe Connor would help to persuade his mother that it was okay for him to eat the two desserts together too, but he was disappointed as the tall man didn’t say anything else and his mother barely even acknowledged him. For a few moments his lower lip stuck out in a childish pout, but that was before a bright board full of paintings caught his eye and distracted him.
Elizabeth nodded once more as Connor again displayed his manners, though she did wish that she could exchange her son’s tastes for someone favouring a more moderate sugar intake. The little guy only took to being ignored on a subject for so long, but she would take the time. Hopefully something here would distract the bulk of his attention.
“Wesnerbation standards,” Francis repeated, not really understanding and unable to pronounce the word through his childish lisp. He looked blank for a minute, his jaw dropping a little as he thought. Then he turned his vivid blue eyes back up to Connor. “S’that good?”
Caring little that his mother had left him in the care of a giant (what could be cooler?), Francis lifted his sticky hand and patted the top of Connor’s head, amazed that he could make himself seem so small. Maybe he just had to bounce high to grow up so big. That would be something else he would try before he got his mother to measure him.
“Okay,” he said vaguely, answering Connor’s question. It sounded like one of those grown up ones that you’re supposed to make sure you answer. So he did. A sudden thought came into his head though and a more timid expression crossed his chubby juvenile face. “Umm… is ebryone else gonna be giants too?” He thought that Connor being a giant was pretty awesome, but what if everyone was and he was the odd one out? He had no qualms in meeting new people, but he didn’t want someone to stand on him by accident.

"Yes really! You look like you're off to a great start!" Connor said encouragingly. He knew the boy would get taller, maybe not as tall as him, especially since he wouldnt have a chance of a wolf gene being in there like some of the other kids here, to help him grow taller, but he'd still get taller. It was a slight fib that the boy would become a giant, but he didnt think that once the boy was at his full height that he'd be angry at Connor for something like that.
Connor smirked as the little boy attempted to repeat what hehad said, realizing it had sounded confusing to the young boy. " Reservation Standards, and yup thats good. The reservation, or 'rez' as some of the other kids might call it is where you're at now, and since its cold most of the time, anytime it gets not quite as cold, we call it warm enough for the beach"
As Francis patted the top of his head, Connor was sure something sticky would be left behind, but didnt mind too much, its what you got for working at a day care. He saw the boy look a little more shy as he asked if everyone else would be giants. "Nope, they're mostly your size, some a little smaller, the younger ones" He explained. "And there's another girl that works here with me, but she's closer to your mom's size than mine"

Francis smiled happily up at Connor, his mind filled with all sorts of awesome things he could do once he was finally a giant. He would be able to get into the cookie jar whenever he wanted; he would be able to reach all the tasty things at the supermarket and put them into his mum’s trolley while she wasn’t looking; he would be unstoppable! He giggled at his plans, thinking about everything he could do once he had grown up to be as big as Connor – he only hoped it wouldn’t take too long.
He looked up at the large man that would be taking care of him now while he was at daycare, his mouth hanging open a little as he explained what he meant by reservation standards. Francis’ face gradually reformed into a smile when he was told that there was a greater chance of going to the beach than in other places. “That would be super-neat,” he told the adult seriously, trying, in his own childish way to cajole him into doing a day trip soon, not realising how odd it sounded. “I’m not cold.”
Giggling delightedly, Francis sat down abruptly, the carpeted area cushioning his fall and then continued to laugh at Connor’s words. “Silly! Girls can’t be giants!” he announced as if it was the most basic fact of life. He wasn’t generally misogynistic, nor did he have any such influences at home, but he just couldn’t imagine such a large woman – the mostly took on the size of his mother in his imagination. Still, he was relieved that not everyone would be so big, at least not until he was that big too. “When do they come?” He reached his inexplicably sticky hand that had just patted Conner’s head to his own shock of bright blonde hair and began to pull on it absent-mindedly.

Travis wished that he didn't have to go to day care today. He wanted to stay home and had tried to convince his Daddy that they should both stay home today and play instead of coming here. He saw the look knowing that his father was considering it but also could see that it wasn't happening. He said he had to work, which meant that his Aunt would be dropping him off here. At least day care wasn't all that bad. They let him play games and had lots of fun toys. They weren't as cool as being with Daddy but it wasn't bad for a second option.
Travis' Aunt walked him to the door and opened it for him, waving goodbye and Travis ran inside as his Aunt left. He waved to her before looked up at Connor who was talking to another boy who wasn't usually at his 'school'. "Hi Connow" He said still having a little trouble with his R's. He knew it was rude to interupt and felt a little shy with the new boy here, wishing again that his dad was with him to tell him what to say. Travis kept walking and headed over to the toys, looking for one of the trucks.

Connor grinned as the boy said that he wasn't cold. He was sure that there would be days when it was too chilly for him to go outside, especially into the water, but admired his courage in trying to act as if he wasn't. Connor himself barely felt the cold, but he knew enough to watch the temperatures and how the kids dressed to see when it would be okay for them to go to the beach. He hoped he'd be able to take the boy soon. "Good, hopefully we'll get there soon"
He laughed as the boy told him that girls couldnt be giants. "Girls can do anything we can" He said trying to teach him something he knew girls later in his life would be thankful for. "But generally we are taller" He agreed. Before he had a chance to answer about when the rest of the kids would be there, Travis Winters, one of the little boys who had been coming since shortly after he was born came through the doors, greeting him. "Hi Trav!" He said with a smile, seeing him go off to find a toy.
"Looks like they're already coming now" He told Francis. He knew that Travis would actually probably be a good one for Francis to meet, he was one of the nicer boys, a little shy at times, but he knew he wouldn't bully him like the kids at his old day care had done. "Do you want to meet him?"
