{Late Eclipse}
No getting around it, Dawn was bored out of her mind, though quite soon she would crave the mind numbing feeling once more in favour of what it was to be replaced with. The young woman sat at the kitchen table of the high-rise apartment that she shared with her sister and her sister’s boyfriend, alone. There was nothing unusual about this situation, even on the other girl’s day off from work. Usually Dawn would sit and listen to the radio or an audio book, which she found endlessly entertaining – she loved to read. However, it seemed that Olivia must have been using the portable stereo last night, or she may have taken it along on the picnic with her; either way, it wasn’t in the place it usually was, nor any of the surfaces that Dawn felt safe searching without being in danger of smashing one of her elder sister’s trinkets.
Thus, seen as the television had nothing of note on it – it was reality TV season and the only thing more boring than watching people sleep was listening to them sleep. She was half considering going to bed herself, though the clock had only just struck ten pm and she was usually a night owl. However, just as she was about to pick herself up and take herself into her bedroom an odd scraping and stifled laughter caught her quick ears. She frowned, freezing her movements so that she could figure out what it was. She knew that her sister and her boyfriend were planning on a midnight picnic, so it wasn’t them, but was she hearing noise from next door? A quick bang, the door slamming into the wall with force as it was opened, startled her and she jumped up from the chair, her large green eyes wide, her complexion pale.
Nothing like this had ever happened to her, not even when she could see, nor had it happened to anyone in their family. The drunken sounding laughter got louder and approached her location while she stood like an idiot rabbit caught in headlights. She didn’t know where to go, she felt paralysed.
“What’ve we got here, boys?” the sneering voice sounded, which Dawn somehow registered, with some surprise, had a Cockney accent. There were at least three responding jeers and by the sound of it they were moving around the small kitchen. She swallowed loudly, still unmoving, though she made efforts to set her jaw and look at her would-be attacker in a fierce manner. She pulled her mobile phone out of her pocket, brushing her thumb over its surface so that she could figure out the keypad’s relative location.
“Just get out of here now,” she said, her voice stronger than she thought she could manage. She poised her thumb over the 9. “There doesn’t need to be any trouble, you could just go…” As an amused laughter sounded in front of her, she pressed down on the digit a small moment before a rough hand knocked it from her grip.
“Look at me, bitch,” he spat, sounding as though he was gritting his teeth. She felt the same rough hand fasten around the lengths of her dark brown hair and she just about managed to stifle a whimper. “I said look at me!”
Dawn tried her best to meet the English man’s gaze, though her fear was making her usual attention to detail sloppy. She barely registered a drawling American accent directly behind her speaking unsurely about his leader’s current actions – they had thought the apartment was empty. However, before the American could finish, a high laugh sprayed alcoholic spit into Dawn’s face and he shoved her back.
“We, my friends,” he said, his voice twisted in human cruelty. “Have hit the jackpot. She’s blind as a coot, won’t see a thing, perfect crime. And… we can have a little fun.”
Dawn gulped, her eyes somehow still widening at the prospect. Her brave façade had more or less crumbled completely. She could feel a hot prickle behind her eyes, but she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of crying in front of them. She should have left the phone in her pocket, she thought to herself furiously, feeling more vulnerable than ever before. She jumped suddenly, her arms flailing out and knocking the chair she had been sat on over as loud smashes occurred simultaneously in front of her and behind her.
“Have a nice trip, you dumb, blind cow,” he said gruffly, reaching for her shoulder and pulling her off balance so that she fell to her hands and knees. Immediately pain shot through the tender skin of her palms, though most of the glass was thick rather than small slithers. She winced and pushed herself so that she was crouched on the floor, pulling out a couple of shards of glass from her palms. Happily her knees fared better from the thick denim that they were clad in, but now she was really trapped. She had no idea how far the glass spread in any direction.
Only a minute or so later one of the group of men shouted about them getting themselves the hell out of there and suddenly Dawn was alone again. She didn’t dare to move for a full five minutes after she heard the front door of the apartment bang shut in case someone remained, or in case they came back. However, as it seemed that she was truly alone now, she began to feel the pressure and shock of the situation build in her chest. She grabbed at the table leg that lay near to her sat position with her sore hands and pulled at it until it lay over her like some kind of fort. She put her hand out, trying to assess how much glass lay where the small table had been, her delicate fingers travelling until they reached something hard and plastic.
“Oh!” she gulped in air, hope causing a separate pressure to build in her breast. She traced the buttons with her sensitive, torn thumb for the second time that night and immediately traced a number she now knew better than any other without thinking. She lifted the handset up to her ear and pulled her knees up to her chest, the strong prickle behind her eyes now impossible to resist. It would be over soon, so soon and there was only one voice that would comfort her. However, as the other line rang out, she found her voice swallowed up by a surge of much delayed fear and shock.
“C-connor?” she stuttered, the held back sobs making her voice high and thick. “I-I-I’m scared.”

Connor was annoyed as he came home that night. He had attempted to go to the local store for a few groceries and had gotten there admittedly right before closing. The shop keeper took one look at him walking over and quickly locked the door turning him away. This alone wouldn't have bothered Connor so much, knowing it was almost closing, but as he was walking away a middle aged female came over who he unlocked the door for. Connor hadn't bothered to try to go back but turned his head enough to hear mutterings of how "that kid was probably just gonna buy beer like his dad, or try to rob me, out this late". The way that people saw him still bothered him. He wasn't going to act like someone he wasn't but he wasn't as bad as people made him out to be. They just didnt give him a chance. At least the kids he worked with during the day weren't as judgmental as their parents.
Getting back home, Connor had just about gotten his coat off (a coat that he really didnt need these days but wore out of habit) when his phone started ringing. He looked down at the number and saw it was Dawn, picking up quickly and feeling his heart skip a beat in anticipation of the woman's voice, who he now knew was his imprintee.
"Dawn, Hi--" He started before hearing her voice. He could hear the fear behind her words before she even admitted she was scared. His hands began to shake as he felt like he could change at any moment at the thought that anyone was making her scared but he knew he'd be no help to her like that now.
"Dawn...what happened" He asked already moving out of his house and locking the door behind her. He got into his van ready to come find her. "Are you at home? Tell me were you are, I'll come help you" He said his voice near panic with worry. He didnt know what was wrong with her, if she was hurt, or sick, or something had happened to her. He just knew he wanted to fix it.

As Dawn heard Connor’s voice on the other end of the line an instant wave of calmness subdued the panic that was assaulting the system. Every time she heard him – apparently even when she was scared witless – she was surprised by how rich his voice was, like it held a wealth of information and depth that made anyone else’s seem weak and tinny in comparison. She allowed the vicelike grip she had on her knees to relax a fraction, comforted by the fact that he had answered and that she could now count on him.
“I-I don’t really… know,” she mumbled, feeling ashamed of herself, even if her voice sounded slightly stronger for the couple of words that had travelled down the line to her. She closed her eyes, bringing her free hand up to brush away gathering tears. The whole thing was now a huge blur, she had even lost track of time, which she never did as a general rule (she had never learnt how to tell the time when she was with sight and so her internal clock was well-developed). “Some people broke in…” she frowned as she tried to make sense of what she heard and felt. “Four men, I think, from the sounds of it, and I think they’ve gone now, but…”
Trailing off, she took in a shaky breath and shook her head. Anyone else would have been able to say exactly how many, they would know these things from a glance and they wouldn’t be flummoxed by a ring of glass around them. It had been a long time since Dawn had felt disabled by her inability to see, it was quite often an annoyance, especially living with her sister, but now she realised why they called her an invalid. She leaned her head against the table leg.
“I’m at home,” she frowned as she realised that Connor was miles away and it wasn’t fair of her to drag him out like this. It would take him ages to get here and he probably had work the next day. In fact, she realised now that it would have made the most sense to call maybe her sister who was just a few blocks away (though she doubted that the other girl would answer her mobile) or the authorities (though that would have been humiliating).
She jumped as another bang sounded from the hallway, registering as a low thud over the phone line and she froze for a long few moments. She perked up her ears, listening intently, though her hammering heartbeat wasn’t helping her in any way to discern footsteps. She couldn’t hear anything else, though and she knew that the internal breeze of the building tended to play games with the front door if it wasn’t closed properly. She swallowed, finding it difficult through her dry throat. “Thank you,” she said, her voice lower now, just in case. “And Connor, I-I’m sorry… I didn’t know who else to…”

Despite how scared Dawn sounded, just hearing her voice was reassuring to him. He knew that no matter what horrible scenarios ran through his mind before she got a chance to explain things to him, he at least knew she was well enough to talk. He tried to keep from giving her too many questions hearing how scared and flustered she was. He wanted to help her but didnt want to make it harder on her first in just explaining things so tried to wait to allow her to explain it.
"Broke in?" He said, immediately feeling a surge of range that threatened his phasing but he concentrated on the feeling he got from talking to his imprintee, that comfort that he needed to stay in control. He got minor relief when she said that they were gone now, or so she thought. "Dawn...did they hurt you?" He asked her, terrified of what a group of 4 men could do to a beautiful young woman who couldnt see to fight them off.
Connor stepped on the gas as soon as he heard that she was at home. It wasn't a short drive but he didnt care how many speed limits he broke along the way or tickets they tried to give him. He was going to get to Dawn as soon as possible. "I'm on my way Dawn, Hang in there" He told her. He assumed from the way she was talking that she was home alone, but even if her sister was there, Connor knew he wanted to be there for her. That he'd be able to protect her better.
"You're welcome and don't apologize, I'm glad you called me" He told her honestly. "I want to be there for you. You can always call me, for anything "

Dawn nodded dumbly, even if she was on the phone, as Connor repeated her statement that the flat had been broken into. She frowned and closed her eyes tight, causing little wrinkles to appear all around them as she tried to dislodge some of her nervous tension. Even though she loved the amount of comfort and calm she was getting from the other end of the line, she hoped that she hadn’t worried him too much, or perhaps annoyed him? She doubted that, though, they had a connection – a completely inexplicable connection that had made them incredibly close from the very moment that they had met not so long ago.
“Yeah,” she confirmed, her voice small, almost a squeak compared to her usual broad accent. Her stomach and chest heaved in and out as she breathed deeply, trying to centre herself again so that she could stop trembling quite so much and get some control of the situation. At this very moment she could hardly figure out which direction she was sat in, even though there was a breeze coming from the door that should have told her without a conscious thought to work it out.
“Not… really…” she said, slowly, dragging out the words as her boyfriend asked whether they hurt her. She longed to lie so that he wouldn’t panic, but she wasn’t a big liar and had never done so to Connor. Plus, he would get to her then and see whatever cuts that were obvious on her skin, so there was really no point. “Not badly,” she amended, quickly, not wanting him to worry. “And not much, just some minor pushing around… and well, I just cut myself a bit… on something…, but not badly. I’m fine, really.” She paused, lifting a spare hand to the crown of her head and pressing on the tender area a little. “They just… frightened me…”
She sucked in air, relief flooding her system as he concerned that he was on his way, but it was quickly followed by a surge of guilt. “Thank you,” she repeated, her quietened voice full of gratitude. “You’re the only one I could think of… There’s no one I’d rather be here,” she added, honestly, though she was still whispering. “I’m okay, be careful driving.”

Not really. It wasn't a very reassuring answer for Connor to hear that his soul mate was alright. When she changed it to not badly he wanted to rip the heads off of the guys who had hurt her, even if it wasn't badly they had hurt and scared her and that was enough reason to cause Connor to feel enraged at the thought of them. "When I get there I'll get you bandanged up...if you feel worse call an ambulance" He told her, wondering if she was downplaying her injuries and not wanting to show up only to find her having passed out on the floor, from blood loss or any other injury she may have sustained that she wasn't talking about now.
"You're welcome" Connor said again, feeling guilty that he felt happy hearing she wouldn't rather have anyone else there only him. He wanted to be there, and he wanted to be the first one she came to with any problem. And it warmed him with comfort when she responded that he was that person to her, even without knowing the imprinting reason. He hoped even without a mythical force between them that she would still have wanted to turn to him. "There's no where else I'd have wanted to be"
" I'll be fine" He reassured her as she told him to be careful driving. He heard the beeping of the low battery from his cellphone and knew it wouldnt last for the entire drive to Seattle. "My phone's dying but I'll leave it on, call me back if you need someone, but I'll be there just as soon as possible"

Even as she heard herself saying that she wasn’t really hurt, as if from some other body that wasn’t her own, Dawn could tell that she should have said something more comforting to her boyfriend as he listened too many miles away to be immediately reassured. However, with her brain not necessarily in the highest gear it had ever been in, it was the best she could do, but she knew that even her amendment wouldn’t do to ease his mind. She bit her lip as she listened to Connor’s response to her stumbling explanation of injury.
“Really, Connor,” she said, making her voice sound much firmer than it naturally was. She took a deep breath before continuing. “It’s really not that bad. It’s just a few cuts on my hands and knees and… a headache, I suppose. I don’t even think I’m bleeding anymore, so please don’t worry about that. I’m fine.”
Despite the situation that she was in, Dawn couldn’t stop the warm feeling from spreading through her chest when she heard him confirm that there was nowhere else that he would rather have been. She still felt a little guilty for making him drive all this distance, for being such an inconvenience. She may not have asked him to come over for her, but there was really nothing else he could do for her, what else did she expect?
“If you’re sure…” she said, trailing off, not wanting to stop him from coming over. Really, there would be nothing else that would give her the same level of comfort and the same feeling of safety than being with Connor. It was an effect that he had had on her from their very first meeting. Completely inexplicable, but she accepted it all the same. She loved it, and by extension, him.
She nodded, dumbly, as Connor reassured her that he would be fine driving and told her that his battery was dying. A wave of nauseas fear ran over her, causing another shudder of her shoulders as she realised how long it would be before he got there, but she was determined not to call him back and distract him from his driving, or worry him if his battery died altogether.
“Okay,” she said, her voice smaller than it had been through their conversation. She reached out with one of her hands and gripped at the table leg, which she was still cowering under. She swallowed, some degree of uncertainty encouraging the next words out of her mouth before she hung up. “Goodbye, I-I love you.” She pressed the hang up button, and brought the phone down to her side and curling into the tight ball where she was to wait out the hours until he arrived.

Though Dawn tried to downplay what had happened, Connor feared for the worst. His overprotectiveness for her going into hyperdrive, wanting to rip the heads off of each of the men who had broken into her home, tormented her and caused her pain. With the rage he felt he didnt think any of them deserved to live. He had to focus on the sound of Dawn's voice, having observed with Paul too many times how a little bit of anger can quickly make a wolf phase.
"I'm sure" Connor said, knowing that now he had to see for himself that she was okay, even if she didn't want him to stay, just so that he knew she was safe and not lying there hurt. He couldnt just leave her for them to come back either.
He felt horribly guilty as he knew he couldnt maintain the conversation until he got there. The phone hadn't been charged and he didnt own a car charger. He wanted to be able to talk her through it and hear her voice until he could see she was okay. Her voice sounded quieter as she told him okay and he felt as if he had let her down. "I'm sorry" He told her wishing he had been smart enough to always keep it charged, for anytime she needed him. Her next words touched his heart . "I love you too, I'll be there soon" He told her hanging up.
Connor stepped on the gas and shot down the streets. He didn't care if he got a ticket, or if someone tried to pull him over. They'd have to catch him for that and Connor doubted they'd even be able to catch his lisence plate number before he was out of sight. Somehow, despite breaking every speed limit along the way, he managed to get to Seattle without being stopped once. His hands were shaking as he got closer, worried that she wasn't going to be okay when he walked in.
Her door was still unlocked when he got there and he walked in without waiting to see if anyone else had come home or for her to find her way to him, he couldnt wait for anything. "Dawn! I'm here!" He called out as he worked his way through the house towards the kitchen.

“It’s okay,” Dawn responded immediately after Connor apologised for having to hang up. She couldn’t lie to herself and convince herself that she wouldn’t have preferred to have her boyfriend on the other end of the line for the three or four hours that it took to make the trip from La Push to Seattle, but she certainly didn’t blame him for not being able to do so. She cleared her throat a little in an attempt to make her soft voice sound a little stronger over the phone line. “It’s probably safer that way anyway.”
As she heard her boyfriend declare his own affection for her, a small smile penetrated the stressed expression on her face. It was probably a pretty odd time to be dwelling on those kinds of sentiments, but when it came down to it, the feelings she had for her boyfriend overwhelmed everything and anything else she could feel. However, as soon as the line went dead the comfort that she had gleaned from his voice evaporated and was soon replaced by a cold dread. She allowed her hand that held the phone to drop down to her side and then wrapped her arms around her knees to wait.
During the time that it took Connor to make the journey from La Push, Dawn had been stricken with unfounded panic at least five times as the breeze of the corridor threw the door back and forth against its frame. She did try to venture forward, first sliding her hand across the linoleum floor to feel her way forward, though that only resulted in feeling the wrath of the tiny shards of glass. Then she tried lean over and tentatively touch the ground to see if she could find a path between the remains of whatever had been smashed there. To no avail, though, she figured out that she was surrounded and having nicked herself a few more times in the scouting process, she knew that whatever had smashed had shattered itself. She hoped it wasn’t her sister’s vase.
As time passed, Dawn went back to her crouched position under the shifted table and closed her eyes. She wondered if her sister would come home that night. She said she would, but that hadn’t always happened in recent months when she went out with her boyfriend. She couldn’t blame her, really. However, around an hour sooner than she expected it, Connor’s voice penetrated the air, approaching her position.
“Connor!” she called back, shifting so that she was stood within the ring of the shattered expensive vase and a few drinking glasses that had been resting on the draining board. She turned so that she was facing the kitchen door, though in her disorientated state of mind, she was a little off. “Careful of the glass!”

Walking through the open door to Dawn's house, Connor felt a chill go through him. His heart had sunk to the pit of his stomach with fear, not knowing what he was going to walk in on. He didnt know what shape she was really in, wondering the whole way over if she had just been downplaying it because she didnt want him to be too worried. He needed to see her and the desperate urge moved him through the house. He felt the panic as he began searching the house and didnt immediately see her. He worried about the possibility that the intruders could have come back. He mentally berated himself for having hung up earlier and not have been able to stay on the line with her to both keep her calm and also know that she was still safe.
Relief surged over him as he heard her voice and knew that his imprintee was nearby. He immediately moved towards the sound of her voice heading to the kitchen. He went through the kitchen door and stopped as she mentioned to be careful of the class. He looked around for a moment taking the room in, seeing the broken glass and dishes and the disarray that they had made. His eyes quickly made it to Dawn who was standing in the center of a ring of glass. She had a few cuts from the glass, but, she was well enough to stand.
Connor rushed over to her, not even thinking to take it slow in case she didnt sense his approach. He put his arms around her and pulled her into a hug, kissing the top of her head protectively. "Dawn, I'm so sorry this happened" He told her, feeling like he should have been here to both protect her from it and to get here quicker than the time it had taken him.

Although the speed at which Connor approached her surprised her a little, and the quietness with which he approached, Dawn immediately felt comforted and safe as he took her into his arms. There was only a fraction of a split second where she feared that it wasn’t her boyfriend that had found her there, then she gave herself in to his comfort. She returned his hug with all her strength, knowing that it wouldn’t make him uncomfortable.
“It’s okay,” she said, her voice a little shaky, not pulling away from his broad chest, where she felt so safe in its warmth. She twisted her fingers into the back of his t-shirt, anchoring herself there. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have phoned you so late, I know you were probably busy or resting up for tomorrow … and Libby might be back soon …” She knew she had explained this before on the phone, but now that he was here in person she felt so much more appreciative for him and a little guiltier for more or less forcing him to make the long journey to Seattle.
“Thank you, though,” she continued, now directing her face up to Connor’s head and allowing her tight grasp of him to loosen slightly to allow her the movement. As she imagined what she could be seeing, what he boyfriend’s face could look like and what expression he might be displaying, the shock of the night began to creep back on her. Her face scrunched up a little and she seemed to shrink as her large murky green eyes filled with tears. “Oh Connor, I was so scared… I-I didn’t know what was happening and-“ She trailed off and clamped her eyes shut as hot tears began to fall down her cheeks.

Connor continued to Dawn as she returned his hug. He wanted to hold her tighter but knew he had to watch his strength, especially now when his emotions and anger were heightened after seeing what they had done to her. He couldnt believe that humans could actually be this cruel, to treat someone else this way. A woman, and one in a vulnerable position.
"Don't even apologize, I dont want you ever feeling bad for calling me, not ever and especially not for something like this" Connor told her seriously. "I dont care what time it is, or what I'm doing, you're more important than any of that, I'll always be here" He was glad that she couldnt see his face contort up in anger as she mentioned how her sister might be back soon. "She shouldnt have left you alone...and not for this long" he said firmly.
"You're welcome" He responded softer as he looked down and into her eyes. He saw her face scrunch up then her eyes filled with tears. "I should have been here to protect you...I'm so sorry" He said holding her close again as she closed her eyes and her voice trailed off.

“Alright,” Dawn responded, the sentiment making her feel better for calling Connor when sense dictated that she should have chosen someone closer to phone – not that she really knew anyone that close other than her sister. She sighed lightly, reflecting over how far away they were in general. She would love it if he could be there every day, every minute if she got her way, though she knew that even if they did live close, he would still have important things to do for the Reservation and he would still have to earn a living. She couldn’t believe how lucky she had been in the woods when he had found her. “I’m so glad we stumbled upon each other that day …”
“She needs to have her own life too,” she said gently, tempering his firm tone about her sister. The annoyance over her sister’s lack of responsibility always came in waves; she knew that she was in a vulnerable situation with her disability, which meant that her elder sister should perhaps at least check in with her once in a while, but Dawn would never make the other girl give up any part of her life. “I’m home alone quite often; I suppose I was owed a bad night sooner or later.” Her face immediately betrayed how little even she thought of that sentiment, not having a particular belief in any karmic forces. “Or something like that … I guess it could have happened to anyone.”
As the shock of the evening overwhelmed her once more, now that she felt safe and secure enough to let go, Dawn allowed her head to rest against her boyfriend’s chest again. She was instantly mentally comforted by the strong arms that tightened around her, though her body had a few sobs and trembles to get through before it could leave the awful situation behind. However, it happened after a little while and she eventually lifted her head, pulling an arm out from around Connor’s back to rub at her eyes.
“Don’t be sorry,” she told him, kissing the rather wet patch on his shirt that her head had just been rested against. “You came when I called, which is more than I could expect to happen when we’re so far apart.” Another sigh like the one earlier drifted through her chest, though this was a little heavier. “I wish we could be closer. It’d be much better if the space between Seattle and La Push could just … disappear or something.”

Connor was glad that Dawn seemed to accept his statement that he didn't mind at all that she called him. He wanted her to always come to him when she needed someone, but he hoped it would never be for something like this again. He didnt want her to have to go through this fear and pain just to have a reason for him to come running. "That day in the woods...it was the best day of my life" He told her honestly. The feeling of imprinting had been better than anything else he could have ever experienced. He knew he was lucky to find her.
"But she also needs to make sure you're safe" Connor said, not accepting that her sister was just living her life. She had to be more responsible than that with Dawn here. Dawn wasn't an invalid or anything, but she did need a little extra care and attention. Her sister was the blind one to not see that much. "No...this shouldnt have ever happened" He said refusing to believe it was just time something like this happened. "Maybe Seattle's not safe enough..." He said already wanting her with him to protect her. He knew even if she was home alone, if she were on LaPush with him, it was safer there. He and the pack kept it safe, and they didnt have the human crime problem of the big cities either. Many people on the rez didnt even lock their doors.
Connor rubbed her back and held her as she let out a few sobs. He wanted to do more for her than just come to her after a crisis. He wanted to stop it from happening. He wanted to always be there, not a couple hour drive away. He loosened his hold on her as she slipped out an arm and rubbed the tears from her eyes. He leaned down and kissed her forehead lightly.
"You can always expect me to come, no matter where I am. I should have been able to stop this though...its not right" He told her listening to her voice how she wished the distance between Seattle and LaPush could just disappear. "I'm not sure I know how to make that happen...but there is another way we could be closer...you'd be safer and I would only be minutes away at any time, if not right there with you...I know we havent been dating all that long, but I would love for you to move in with me. I promise I would look out for you better than your sister has"

A natural, if slightly watery, smile appeared on Dawn’s face as she heard Connor tell her that meeting her was the best day of his life, immensely flattered, but also happy that the feelings he voiced matched what she felt herself. They hadn’t been together all that long, but already she felt that she could trust him with everything she had and knew that he would do anything and everything he could to protect and care for her. She wasn’t exactly sure how she could know these things, it was just an innate feeling where he was concerned.
As the conversation turned to her sister’s shoddy care of her, Dawn pulled her lower lip between her teeth, directing her face up in a vague angle towards her boyfriend’s. She couldn’t deny his logic, but she didn’t like to feel that she was unappreciative to the person that had brought her over here. She just bowed her head a little, shrugging a little as he told her that this shouldn’t have happened.
“I’m sure I’ll be okay now,” she tried to reassure him after he began wondering whether the city was safe enough place for her to be. She wasn’t particularly attached to the place – she barely knew it – but she couldn’t see a way that she would be leaving any time soon. She reached out for his large, warm hand, running her soft, unworked fingers over it, finding all the little nooks and crannies that most people would miss. She already knew these hands better than she knew anyone else’s. “They won’t come back.” She hoped, though as she thought about it, so the events of the night returned to her, making her swallow awkwardly as emotion surged over her.
Sobbing into Connor’s chest, Dawn couldn’t be more grateful for his presence. The comfort that he always offered her was immense – she just needed to sense that he was around, whether by hearing his footsteps or tracing his face with her fingertips, and she was soothed. Her watery eyes directed themselves blindly up to Connor’s face, her fingers clutching around his form once more as he asked her to move in with him. Her mind whirled, a smile pulling at her face. She hadn’t even thought that was a possibility at this point – she knew that Connor felt strongly for her, as she did him, but it was a lot to ask to allow her to live with him.
“Really?” she asked, a little breathlessly. She pulled him closer, wondering if she was actually dreaming – how else could such a bad night turn into the suggestion of something so good? “You really mean it?”
