[Post Breaking Dawn - Claire age 16, after Like hell, we are anxiously waiting] Claire had arrived home, having been dropped off by Emily. She thanked her dutifully, but could not hide the resentment from her face. She'd gone straight to her room and practically wore a path into the carpeting of her room, pacing back and forth. She ran the conversation she'd had with Emily on the way back, trying to deduce anything else from it that she already didn't know. Maybe it was because she was frantic and confused, but she learned nothing tonight. Well maybe nothing. She learned that whatever this was, it was big. Much bigger than she had originally thought. Actually, she at first thought she was crazy; she was imagining things. But Emily had been loyal enough to at least confirm that her suspicion was real. It had been a real blow. She never would have imagined that Quil would hide something from her. Fresh, hot tears streamed her face as she felt the stab of betrayal.
Now that her suspicion was confirmed, she had new fears to entertain. If Emily wouldn't tell her, Quil alone had the answer. What was so important that Emily had withheld it from her? Old fears snuck up again. She had worried that something might be wrong with him, and she felt it again in a stronger degree, stirring fear and panic. She didn't want to think anything like that. And it didn't even make sense. Quil was incredibly healthy and active, even for his 30 years. But the thought brought up one of the observations she'd made that had lead her to approach Emily. Quil didn't look 30. It seemed as if Claire had shot up in the last few years, and her family was growing older while Quil only seemed to watch. He still had the boyish smile that she loved; the one she remembered since she was little. She pushed her memory as far as she could, and was again struck by the fact that he hadn't changed.
Her thoughts about Quil, wolves, vampires, her conversation with Emily were jumbled all in her thoughts, fighting for her attention and struggling to make sense. It was about 20 minutes before she had had enough and rezipped her hoodie shut and walked out of her house. She felt her chest tighten as she fiercely fought the sobs that were threatening to come. Her breath was labored and short as she quickly chose a direction and walked in the light drizzle. She soon realized the direction she'd subconsciously chosen, and walked more determinately towards her destination. Her vision was blurred with tears, but she knew her way by heart.
In less than a few minutes she was at Quil's little house, where she stopped outside and pounded on the door. "Quil!" she called out, frantically. She had been here several times before, but never in this state and usually with notice. Tonight, she was impatient and she pounded on the door again. "Quil! It's Claire, open up!"[tag: YOU HEARD ME]

Quil had been asleep when Claire arrived. He was up early that day patrolling and had only gotten back home an hour or so ago. He came home ate and went to bed, not even bothering to change out of his shorts before deciding to get a few hours in. As he heared the pounding on the door he rolled over and fell out of bed onto the floor, groaning as he woke up. It took him a few moments to get out of his state of sleep in order to realize what was happening. He then quickly recognized Claire's voice and heard the urgency to it.
He ran to the door not bothering to grab a shirt, more worried about getting to Claire before she got anymore upset than she currently was. His emotions were all heightened, worried that something may have happened to her and ready to do whatever he needed to make sure she was okay. If someone had hurt her, he'd probably rip their throat out. He quickly opened the door, seeing the tears brimming in her eyes.
"Claire, what's wrong?" He asked immediately concerned. "Come in" He said ushering her inside, where hopefully she'd be away from whatever had caused her distress tonight. It tore at his heart to see her this way and not know what he could do to fix it.

Had it had been a different 16 year old pounding on the door of a different 30 year old, this would have looked very odd indeed. But this was Quil, the person she'd considered her very best friend for her entire life. She knew what they had was unique, all her friends from school though adults were boring and overbearing, and had best friends within their age range. But Quil had been the safe harbor for every secret Claire had. This was also the very person who had neglected to tell her something, and this something tied up all the weird things she'd taken note of. It had to make sense, somehow. But it would hurt to know that he hadn't told her after all this time, after she had told him everything.
The rain caught her face a little when she looked up as Quil opened the door, concern evident in his eyes. It added to the moisture on her cheeks, but the evidence of her tears were still apparent in her red-rimmed eyes. A part of her felt the familiar rush of warmth and calm that was associated with his presence. It usually took over her and made her day better, no matter how bad it was. But tonight was different and the sight of his face was now also accompanied by resentment. She let him invite her in, but walked into his house without touching him, denying him the hug she usually gave him when they saw each other. She stomped into the little living room, her hood falling down and she spun around to glare at him. She breathed heavily, trying to keep herself from crying, and tried to wipe her face dry.
She was suddenly tongue-tied like she had been when she had tried to talk to Emily at first. It had taken her several minutes before she'd gotten to the point. But now she didn't speak right away because she didn't know whether to yell or accuse or cry. She was suspicious when she'd talked to Emily, but now pure panic was evident in her eyes. "Tell me the truth, Quil," she blurted out, a bit louder than intended, though only a result of holding back the impending sob. "Right now. Did you tell me everything about the legends?" She already knew he hadn't, and it made her heart ache. But she wanted to hear it from him.

As Claire walked in stomping past him without so much as a hug Quil felt a wave of chill run through him. This wasn't normal behavior and he ached to have her in her arms. When she was upset in the past, a hug from him was usually one of the first things that she'd want. It gave them both comfort. But now it was obvious that he had done something wrong. He was the reason why she was so upset right now and it made his heart ache, wishing he could take it back, whatever he had done or said that was wrong. He tried to think back to the last time he had seen her, he didnt remember her seeming upset then. Did they have plans tonight that he had slept through?
Quil closed the door behind Claire as she entered and turned to look at her with a completely apologetic look on his face, knowing if he had done anything wrong he'd work to make it up to her. Then his expression changed slightly to confusion as she made her accusations. Quil didnt think he was even capable of lying to Claire. There were things he hadnt told her yet, but only because Sam, Emily and Rayen hadn't thought he should tell her yet because of her age, but he knew he'd tell her anything she wanted to know. Was she ready to learn about imprinting? "Claire, I'll tell you anything you want to know, you know that."

Claire had stood her ground, watching Quil's face for any hesitation. For a second she felt a surge of anger towards him; something she had never felt before. Of course, they argued once in a while, but they always made up easily and she had never felt anything stronger than irritation. "You didn't answer the question," she retorted, picking his answer apart. At the moment, the notion of him hiding something from her and the hidden thing were almost equal in significance. She wanted all the answers if she wanted to get rid of the feeling of anxiety that had been building.
Again, she reviewed the suspicions in her mind, and found them cloudy and ridiculous as ever. They all seemed to point to her just being paranoid. But how could you not be, in a world where werewolves and vampires existed? What else was going on that had not reached her ears and imagination? She resumed the pacing she had begun in her room after her conversation with Emily. Feeling stupid again for having to confront someone with the dumbest suspicions of her mind, she couldn't figure out how to start, frustrated as much as she had been at the beginning of the car ride. The confusion only made her more exasperated as she tried to express the jumbled thoughts of her head.
"I just don't get it," she said bluntly, still pacing. "Don't ask me how I know, but I know. I just... don't know." Her head shook as her features twisted in irritation. "Why are you even my friend?" she said, finally stopping, looking at Quil. "When everyone else's friend isn't twice their age. And why," she continued, finding momentum, "does no one think that's weird, or creepy? And WHY," she shouted, but inable to think of what else she had in mind. She looked away from him and her eyes landed on a small sidetable that supported a small framed picture. Finding her voice again, she plucked it from it's place and turned the image to him. It was Quil and herself, more than 10 years ago. "Why do you still look like this?"
For a second, she almost saw herself from outside her own body. Drenched from the rain, wearing a muddy path in Quil's floor and glaring at Quil like a lunatic with an old picture. How many 16 year olds yelled at adults like this? Claire couldn't think of any. Her sudden outburst, foreign to her usual calm but playful disposition, made her cheeks flare in color. She was suddenly embarrassed, and put the frame back, picture side down. "I'm crazy. This is crazy. right?" She tried to warm herself, suddenly shivering, by crossing her arms, new tears blotting her vision. "Please tell me I'm just crazy," she pleaded. It would make things so much easier if she were just imagining things. Quil and her family wouldn't be liars, her imagination was just unhinged and everything could just go back to normal... other than her being crazy.
The only problem with this new, comforting theory was that it negated the conversation with Emily she'd had, which pretty much confirmed that there was something not quite right.

Quil frowned hearing Claire dissect his answer saying he didnt answer her question. He hadn't but he didn't want to see her so upset like this. He wondered what he should have done differently in the past to keep it from coming to this point. He had always planed to tell her everything, he wanted to, but without scaring her off. "Claire, there are a lot of legends...I have never kept anything from you that you've asked about, but of course there are going to be ones that we havent talked about yet"
"I have never once lied to you Claire, not about anything, please believe that" Quil said, hoping that Claire would know in her heard that it was true and trust him to get her through his. He cringed as she asked why he was her friend, feeling as though she had pierced through his heart, wondering if Claire was wishing she had more friends her own age. Was his friendship hurting her? Had his involvement in her life only hurt her to the point where this was the breaking point?
Quil watched Claire yelling and picking up the picture, hoping he'd be able to calm her down. He watched as her emotions changed and she got emotional asking if she was crazy for having these thoughts, preferring that to be the case instead of what she was really suspecting.
"You're not crazy Claire, and I'll tell you everything you want to know. Why don't we sit down and talk about this..." He said motioning to the couch, hoping it would help relax her. "Its not easy to explain, but I'll do my best, and you can always ask if I'm not doing a good job...the picture...I havent aged since then. Its part of the wolf thing...once I started phasing into a wolf, I stopped aging...and so long as I continue to do it, I wont get older. When I give up being a wolf, and stop changing...which will probably be in the next couple of years...I'll age normally again"
Quil paused for a moment to let what he had just told her sink in. That was the easy answer. He also needed this time to try to think of how to explain why they were friends. "Do you not want us to be friends anymore?" He asked her, almost afraid of the answer but knowing that if it wasn't what Claire wanted anymore, he'd have to leave if it was what would make her happy, as much as the thought was hurting him now. "Do you think its weird and creepy...have I made you feel that way?"

Her instincts had been right. When things didn't quite add up anymore, she had attributed all the weirdness to the thing that didn't have any equations. The Legends. She had over a year to try to force the piece of the puzzle into spaces that were much too small. This had been the best idea she had, but it had opened up a blank page of incomplete ideas, fragments. By the time she approached Emily, she was almost positive the Legends had more to tell, but her limited knowledge of them kept her from guessing. The panic in her eyes finally left, but now she looked at Quil sadly. He said he hadn't lied, but hadn't told her everything. Wasn't that the same thing? How many times had she been told that omission wasn't any better than a blatant lie? He wasn't supposed to do this to her.
The smallest piece of her that wasn't mourning in disappointment and betrayal was relieved when he reassured her that she wasn't crazy. These things had an explanation, though she wasn't sure she would survive them completely. Not when it meant that her entire family had kept them from her. She shook her head softly, declining he invitation to sit. She didn't want to sit down and be reasonable. She wanted to stop being the kid they were treating her like and for someone to finally tell her what was going on. And whose idea it was to keep her in the dark. And yell. And cry and possibly break something. Claire had grown up without too many serious tragedies in her life; the death of a goldfish had been the worst she had endured. This was gripping her from her diaphragm, making it hard to breathe, threatening to rip it out through her mouth and ridicule her for her ignorance. What brought her out of her reverie was the explanation for the aging. Her eyes shot up again, looking at Quil's handsome face that did not reflect that of a 30 year old. Early 20s at the most. He had always looked like that, but now at the brink of learning this, she saw something supernatural in his features. Before, he had always just been Quil. Now he was a Quileute werewolf, protector of the Olympic Peninsula and a big fat liar. "A few years?" she asked meekly, keeping her voice low to keep her voice from cracking. "What happens in a few years?" Did the vampires run on an undead schedule and were leaving on the area for a sunny vacation? Why would it stop then and not now? Or 10 years ago?
The next words he said were a smack in the face, and it made her step back, her face in shock, until her leg bumped into the couch. She sat down, feeling lightheaded and felt new tears well up. "How can you say that?" Her voice had finally given in, thick with emotion as it labored against the sobs she was holding back. "That's not what I meant," she said, shaking her head. "You're my best friend, we can't not be..." she said her tears falling from her eyes. The very thought of not having Quil nearby tore at her chest and made her shrink back into her hoodie, forgetting the anger she'd been feeling the last few hours. "What else don't I know? Why didn't you tell me?"

Quil could see the hurt all over Claire’s face and he felt horrible for being responsible for it. He hated Sam right now. And Rayen, and Tai, and everyone else who told him he had to keep this from Claire until she was older, saying she wouldn’t understand. They didn’t have to be here now seeing her face as she realized he had kept something from her. He felt more undeserving of her now than he ever felt before. He had never upset her this badly, and until now he didn’t think he was even capable of upsetting her like this. Why hadn’t some secret wolf imprinting mechanism kicked in before now to tell him that he was doing something that would later upset his imprintee? Wasn’t there something in him that was supposed to keep him from acting stupid like this? To spare Claire at all costs? If there was it was defective in him.
Quil looked even more defeated as she shook her head not wanting to sit as he offered it to her. He wondered if that was because she wasn’t planning on staying that long, that she had just come to tell him she had enough with his omissions and was now leaving. The thought of that happening had him terrified. He watched her surprise as he explained about the aging. It was actually a part of the wolf thing that he never meant to keep from her at all, he assumed she would just have noticed he didn’t age and assumed it was a wolf trait. Now it seemed like such a bigger deal, because he knew the conversation it was connected to. He should have made sure things were clearer sooner. He expected her question too, and knew it might be helpful even to lead in to what he needed to tell her. “The reason why a few years is important is kind of connected to the part of the legends that you don’t know about yet”
Quil waited for the answer to his question before going on. If he made her uncomfortable and this was no longer what she wanted, that would drastically change how things went right now. She now sat down after stumbling, and he felt relieved as she seemed insistent that he was her best friend. “I know, we are best friends…I just wanted to make sure that didn’t bother you, I never want to make you feel bad in any way” He told her from his heart, moving so that he was kneeling in front of her and the couch. He was too afraid of rejection to sit next to her, but desperately needed to be near her. The ground seemed like a good place, as he was both physically and emotionally begging for her forgiveness.
He shook his head hating that the tears she was shedding were caused by him and not knowing if what he was going to say was just going to tear her away from him. “Claire, I never wanted to keep anything from you….I just…you needed to make up your own mind about me, and if you wanted me in your life…and…” He swallowed realizing this was a lot harder than he ever imagined it would be. “I can stop phasing into a wolf whenever I choose…just not do it anymore” He said going back to her earlier question. “It’ll make me start aging again…and the reason why I’d probably give it up in a couple years would be so that I could age with you…”

For someone who had never really had tough conversations before, this was overwhelming. Rayen and Tai had given Claire the sex talk a few years earlier, and it had gone considerably well. She had had a difficult conversation with a friend at school about a boy who liked Claire and not her, but their friendship had survived. The legend conversations had started when she was small and open to new things without prior knowledge, and she had taken them well. Sitting here with one of the most important people in her life, if not the most, and learning that he hadn't been honest and that he had held back when she had offered all... it simply made her hands tremble. She had always felt bad for the people in movies who had been betrayed and deceived. Her sympathy had been superficial due to her simple and mostly sheltered life. But today she empathized, and it ached. She chided herself for being so naive.
She felt the warmth radiating from Quil's skin as he knelt before her. She wanted to reach out and seek the comfort she needed, but years of experience told her that the second she touched him, she would forget what was bothering her. Normally it was a relief to feel the consolation of his arms to help her forget whatever was bothering her. But this was far more important than her childhood worries and the consolation would only last as long as his embrace. She had been given comfort, and she had selfishly accepted it. As punishment to herself, she rejected it and endured the distance between them until she knew the truth.
She sighed softly in relief against her own will when he told her they would remain friends. It was the one thing she might not survive at all. But he started talking in circles and riddles again, and the exasperated look on her face returned. What was she supposed to decide? "Why would I not want you in my life?" she asked incredulously at the insinuation. He had answered part of the aging question but now he was knotting it back into more confusing patterns. "Age with me? Why me?" she demanded with a whine, unable to keep her childish frustration at bay. "You're confusing me again, Quil. Just STOP. And tell me what it is." Her breath was labored again, feeling like a 3 year old about to throw a tantrum. The anger that had been shocked away was slowly creeping back. "I just spent an hour trying to get Emily to tell me. And she wouldn't. Apparently everyone knows except for me. She said you had to tell me." Her voice cracked again, but she was determined. She stared at his face, demanding and accusing. "Whatever it is, I need to know now. I'm tired of being treated like a kid.

Quil wished that he thought Claire was ready to accept his touch. As he knelt before her in a subservient manner, he desperately yearned for her touch. A reassurance that she was still alright and that this fight wouldn’t be the end of them. They could survive anything because in one way or another, they did love each other. When she asked him why she wouldn’t want him in her life he wasn’t sure how to explain it. “I couldn’t be sure when you were a kid that you would want me as a friend, and that as you got older you’d still want me around and not just want friends your own age…I never wanted you to feel anything was forced on you, or predetermine. But you have been my best friend since the day I met you, “
Quil watched her confusion and felt even more inadequate, knowing he was failing at explaining things properly to her. “I’m sorry Claire, I’m not trying to confuse you, I am trying to explain…its just complicated” He told her. “It’s because you’re my best friend that you’re the one I want to age with…I don’t want to outlive you…I don’t want to live without you, I couldn’t” He shook his head, not even able to think about continuing his life knowing she wouldn’t be a part of it. “And I didn’t want to continue getting old before you, and miss out on so many years of your life”
“Claire, I’ve always loved you…in whatever way you needed, protecting you like a brother, or being the best friend you could turn to. I will always be that for you, I promise you. Whatever you need, nothing more nothing less” Quil told her terrified of how to explain the imprinting to her. “The reason for that, is because of how strongly I felt when I first saw you. Even though you were just a kid…I loved you and knew I’d do anything for you…its something to do with the legends…its called Imprinting, and it happens the first time a Wolf meets the person he’s meant to feel this way about, like a soul mate. For me that was you. It happened with your Aunt Emily and Sam too, but because they were older their love started out differently. It means that for the rest of my life, I’ll always want to make you happy, and be whoever you want me to be…if you want me there.”

Claire finally looked into Quil's face, watching intently, though not without guilt. She had never suspected Quil had hid anything from her, and now she dared him to speak something untruthful to catch his face falter. It hurt her that she'd have to use such a method on him, like she used it on someone she didn't entirely trust. Until now, she had never had a reason to ever place doubt in Quil, and her heart ached to know that he had taken advantage of that. They all had.
To her relief, she saw in his worried eyes that he spoke the truth, though the words themselves only offered some comfort. He reaffirmed that he loved her, he was her brother and her best friend. But this imprinting thing... it apparently left options open that she had never even considered. A soulmate? "But Sam and Emily... they're married," she said flatly, though her face was suspicious. "and have kids. Are you and me supposed to..." Her voice had failed her, but her mind was already steaming down the path he had insinuated. What the hell was going on? "But... how..." She started shaking her head, feeling overwhelmed. She felt blindsided by what he was telling her, and what it was supposed to mean.

The look on Claire’s face was heartwrenching. Quil wondered if he’d ever be able to gain her trust back, or to convince her that he wasn’t trying to keep anything from her, that he just didn’t know when the right time was to tell her, and none of her family had thought she was old enough and ready for it yet. They had always seen her as just a child, someone who needed protecting, and for the first few years they were sure it was Quil that she might need protecting from. But even when she was a child, that was never how Quil saw her. She was his friend, even before her sentences were fully formed. And she was someone he loved.
Quil saw the confusion on Claire’s face as he mentioned that what they were was like Sam and Emily. He was worried it would upset her but didn’t want to leave out anymore facts. She deserved to have all the answers he could provide. He shook his head when she asked if that meant that they were supposed to be like Sam and Emily. “Sam and Emily were different, they were the same age when they met, and when they saw each other, it was the love of two people who wanted to get married…You were young when we met, so things were bound to start differently for us…” He said then addressing her question of thinking they were supposed to end up that way “We’re not supposed to be anything, nothing has been predetermined or anything like that. Something could happen, but you don’t need to feel the pressure to, its why everyone was scared of telling you. But nothing has to happen, I can be your soul mate as your best friend if that’s what you prefer…and if someday you want more, like Sam and Emily…I can become that for you, but it doesn’t have to happen….I don’t want you to think that because of the imprinting that you owe me something, or have to follow a certain path if its not what you want…all it means is that I’d do anything to keep you happy and protected”

As Quil struggled for words to explain everything, she could almost imagine the deep waves of love emanating between her aunt and uncle whenever they were in the same room. As he described them, she couldn't deny that there was something infinitely special there. She was young, but Claire had seen many odd things; beautiful, frightening and dangerous. Their world of ancient laws and secrets had made all her uncles grow up very fast with the responsibility set on their shoulders. She couldn't imagine ever being in their position, and doubted she would have been very good at it, but she had never regretted being Quil's friend, or for being part of that family.
Though she wanted to believe everything he said, the words themselves conflicted. How can you be someone's soulmate, but then not... end up with them. She couldn't even give it its proper term in her thoughts. She felt the familiar warmth and affection towards her best friend every time he mentioned that he loved her. There had always been something so comforting and pleasant about those words. She felt them even when he didn't say them. But now she felt nervous about everything before today, and wasn't sure which way was up. She knew it was still true, of course, but this new knowledge unsettled her in a way she wasn't familiar with. The concept of a soulmate was so defined, and yet nothing had been predetermined? She again thought of Emily and Sam, remembering as far back as she could, and knowing that not much had changed and that somehow their love had grown impossibly stronger with the years. In the same memories, she saw other faces, other wolves, and her suspicion was roused again. "Sam and Emily," she mumbled, neglecting to mention Quil and herself because he concept was so alien and new to her, "they're not the only ones. Aren't they?" She already knew the answer, if the legend applied to them, why would it not apply to others when there were so many wolves between the two packs?

Quil carefully watched Claire’s every reaction as he spoke, trying to judge whether he was explaining things well and helping her understand and become okay with what had happened to her, or if he was just making it worse with every word that he said. All he could see was that this was a lot for her to take in. It would have been a lot for any girl to take in, but he suddenly wondered if it was easier if the girl was almost a stranger, rather than someone you had known almost their whole life. She still seemed confused and he wondered if his explaination wasn’t sufficient or if it was just the information itself that was confusing. He remembered how confusing it was for him when it first happened, wondering if there was something wrong with him, but always having that nagging knowledge that it had to be okay because he felt wonderful around Claire. Did she still have that feeling too? Or maybe it wasn’t the same for her…maybe she didn’t know that it would be okay and that it had to be normal because it felt so right. What if it didn’t feel right to her at all?
Quil then listened to her question, she was very perceptive in picking up that Sam and Emily weren’t the only others. “No they’re not…there are several of us who have gotten lucky enough, but it doesn’t happen to all wolves” He told her, feeling truly lucky that he had found her and felt as strongly as he did to her. “But Sam and Emily were the first, then Jared and Kim, then I met you….there were others after us too, but I was the only one who found someone who wasn’t close to my age, at least until Jacob and even with him, she grew so fast….but my feelings for you have never been inappropriate, just because that’s how the others felt right away….Claire I know this is a lot…it was hard for me to understand everything at first too, but I knew what was in my heart”

She had anticipated the answer, but hearing it spoken made her muscles tense a bit. In all the other cases, the term soulmate had not been contradicted. Sam and Emily, Kim and Jared, and now she could already pick out the other wolves had imprinted, simply because they now all fit into the image now that she had seen its finer details. They were married, or about to be married, and were now so much more alike to Sam and Emily than she had noticed before. When Quil mentioned Jacob, her eyes widened. "Nessie?" she said, shock creeping up again. Claire had managed to get most of the stories out of Quil, most of them taking place when she was too young, and she'd known about the phenomenon that was Reneesme Cullen. She imagined the family of vampires learning that a supposed sworn enemy was their daughter's soulmate. "Oh my god... Jake. He could have been killed. She was still a baby." Of all things she had been told, the thing that had always been stressed to her was the inevitable danger vampires held, especially when provoked.
The newly wed vampire couple suddenly changed to Rayen and Tai, and her eyes flickered back to Quil. "Wait... what did my mom and dad say?" She felt nervous for him, as if he were just about to break the news to them, and she was expecting an unpleasant response. Knowing her mother and father, she couldn't imagine them being entirely excited that their toddler had found her soulmate before she was even potty trained.
