Gabby placed the large silver bowl of popcorn on the wooden coffee table and felt between the cushions for the movie she’d rented for them. She knew she had put it around here somewhere, the question was where. As she checked under the couch and in between throw pillows she stuck her tongue out the smallest bit, abad habit she had when she was concentrating.
With a sigh she sat on the couch and balanced her head in hands, it was then she noticed the dvd menu was on the screen. She’d already put the movie in. Gabs laughed at herself before allowing her mind to wander. She couldn’t get her mind around what was going on. Kim wasn’t a sad person, but she wasn’t the type to seam like she was going to bust at the seams either.
She took a handful of popcorn and tried to stuff it into her mouth. A few pieces fell to the carpet and she picked them up, placing them on a paper towel. She always made a mess with popcorn, that was one reason she hoped no one ever asked her to the movies. Stuffing her face was a part of who she was, at least thats what Gabby believed.

Kim couldn't get over to Gabby's house fast enough that evening. She had felt like she was in a dream ever since class earlier that day. She adjusted the strap of her bag over her shoulder before continuing on. Kim reached down into her pocket, for what seemed like the millionth time that day, and stopped walking for a moment and took out the piece of paper that was carefully folded and opened it to look at his handwriting. The name and number that had meant everything to her. If she didn't have this as proof she would have been sure she imagined it. Carefully she put it back in her pocket, knowing she'd do anything not to lose it.
As Kim picked up her pace to continue the short distance to her friend's house she wondered what Gabby would say. Would she think she was overreacting to something so simple? Would she even believe her? Gabby was the only person she really had wanted to tell about what happened, and it was incredibly difficult not to do so at all during the school day, but with so many people around, she didnt want to be the reason for gossip spreading.
Kim got to the front door of the Foxe's house and smoothed her windblown hair back with her hands before knocking on the door lightly. She was grateful her parents and Gabby's allowed the girls to have a sleepover that night.

Gabby heard the knock on the door and rushed to answer it, but not before tripping over a throw pillow that she must have thrown to the floor when looking for the dvd. She got up, rubbing her knee with one hand as she continued to walk, hunched over toward the door. Gabby always seemed to get clumsy when she was excited, and being that her best, and only friend was sleeping over. She was super excited. The girl flung the door open and pulled Kim into a hug.
“I rented so french movie, so we’re not going to understand much but theirs subtitles,” she said with a grin as she closed the door behind Kim and took her back pack. She walked away to put it in her room rambling about the popcorn already being ready before re-appearing moments later. The house, like all the others were rather tiny, luckily they had a second floor. Gabby’s room was on the second floor, first door on the right, across from it was a bathroom.
She plopped down on the couch and gave Kim a look before saying, “Okay spill it. What’s up? You were really odd in lunch today.”

Kim thought she heard a slight thumping noise coming from inside the house before Gabby opened up the door and gave herself a hug. Kim hugged her back tightly, excited to see her friend, and knowing she'd finally get a chance to share her news and talk boys with her. "Hey!"
"Cool! If we get too lost we can always just make up our own story for what we think is going on with the characters" Kim joked as Gabby told her that they might not understand much of the movie she had rented because it was in French. "Thanks" She then said as her friend took her back pack and put it in her room.
Kim sat down on the couch next to her friend with a grin as she heard Gabby ask what was up with her, knowing her friend had picked up on something. She was sure it had probably been obvious, just hopefully not to Jared. "OK, so you're not going to believe this, because I don't even believe it, but I have evidence, so it had to have happened!" Kim said, rambling a bit before getting to her point. She never felt as nervous talking to Gabby as she did other people and felt more free to talk, even if she didnt always make sense.
"So...you see, in English class, we got new seats today" Kim said, already feeling the excitement at just the memory of it. "The teacher put me and Jared next to each other....but there's more" She said taking the piece of paper with Jared's number out of her pocket and unfolding it to show it to her friend. "Look!"

Gabby bounced on the couch and pulled herself in to sit indian style and turned herself toward her best friend. “Yeah like that time with the spanish movie, when all we understood was ‘hola’ and ‘te amo’”, Gabby said with a giggle. She listened to Kim gab on for a little bit, definitely not sure what her friend was getting at, but sure it had to be something really good. She bounced in her seat now, smiling and feeling excited even though she wasn’t sure what she was being excited about just yet.
Jared, the guy Kim had a crush on for about, forever was now her sitting next to her. She imagined it was about the same way she’d feel if she was moved to sit next to Eminem at the MTV awards. At least thats as close as Gabby could match it to herself. Her mouth dropped when Kim said there was more. She watched as Kim’s hand searched in the pocket of her jeans for something and wondered if Jared had dropped his eraser or something.
The name on the paper wasn’t in Kim’s handwriting and Gabby squealed in excitement. Only to bounce higher on the couch. “Holy Mother of Buddah!” she exclaimed. “Start from the begining, this calls for cupcakes!” she said pointing her finger into the air.

Kim laughed as Gabby brought up the Spanish movie they had watched and understood none of the actual plot. "Hey! We knew what 'si' meant too! And I still think it seemed like they were trying to protect the crate of oranges from the poolboy's sweat" She said laughing remembering their attempts to figure out the plot of the movie. She knew this one would be fun too even if they didnt actually understand any of it. "Well for French I know 'bonjour' and 'merci' think that'll help?" She giggled again before getting into the juicy events of her day.
Kim could see that Gabby was happy for her just learning about the seat reassignments, knowing that this alone would have been enough good news for her too. She was just still in awe of everything that had happened after that.
"I know!" Kim squealed with Gabby as she looked at the paper and realized what it was. "I couldn't believe it, I'm not sure how it really happened. We sat next to each other and he starts up this conversation, like he actually wanted to talk to me and get to know me, introducing himself...as if I didnt know who he was" She said with a light laugh. " And then he offered me his phone number, said we might need it for assignments or something...so I gave him mine too" She said stopping there for now, giving her friend some time to adjust before letting her know it was even bigger and better than that. Kim still felt like she should be pinching herself right about now.

Gabby laughed at the memory of them giddily making up the script to the movie. She was sure they misinterpreted the hole thing, but it was fun. “Probably not,” she laughed. She was almost positive that when the movie went on, all the words would sound like pretty mush. After all, the language sounded beautiful, they just didn’t understand a lick of it.
The girl giggled in glee and scooped up a throw pillow as she listened to the chain of events. She wasn’t sure she could be any happier for her best friend than she was right now. “So wait, he just starts talking, like out of nowhere? He didn’t have to, wasn’t like an assignment for the class?” She didn’t want to burst bubbles, just needed to make sure she was getting this right.
Gabby wished she was that lucky, but the last crush she had on a person that wasn’t Eminem was on a boy she no longer knew that well. Besides Embry had friends of his own, and she accepted that, just as she’d had her friends back at the Makah Rez. Now that she was in LaPush she wished she’d kept in ouch with him. Or maybe even have the courage to show up at his door step like old times when she'd show up with her mom.

Gabby was exactly what Kim needed right now. The person she could confide in about her exciting day, but would also help her analyze every detail of the conversation to make sure that she wasn't reading too much into it. Kim didn't want to get her hopes up about nothing, and had in fact spent the first part of the class trying to do just that, justifying any other reason Jared could have for talking to her. But she couldn't quite figure it out, at least not on her own.
Kim shook her head answering her friend's question. "Nope, he didn't have to. I mean at least not in that class. We didn't have any assignments to work on together, no projects to make arrangments for, nothing but changed seats that put us right next to each other "
"But there's still more..." Kim said practically bursting from the seams. As she told Gabby all about it, she wondered briefly if she hadn't just dreamed all of this. It seemed way too perfect, but looking down at the paper with his phone number, there was evidence it happened. "I don't even know how this happened...but he offered to teach me yoga on the beach..and we even made plans for it, he's going to pick me up and walk me there" Kim shook her head barely believing herself. "Gabby, how is this even possible? If he wasn't such a nice guy I would be sure he was just playing a joke on me or something...am I missing something? " She said hoping she wasn't just being a naive idiot about the situation.
