{New Moon...ish?}
Matilda sat uneasily at the small, home worked, dining room table in the Stone residence of the Makah Reservation. She twisted her fork into the woven wicker of her placemat and pondered over why she felt so strange. Her mother had just sent her twin brother, Leo, out to find their littlest sister, and it wasn’t as if that was a rare occurrence! Still, the strange squirm was impossible to ignorable – maybe she was getting sick or something.
“Matty, what’s wroooong?” the other sister called in an irritating singsong voice she had picked up recently. Matt ignored her, though, and continued to ruin her placemat.
By the time dinner was ruined, her two sisters had been sent to bed in tears and her parents had sat her down in their father’s study (a room that he shared with the washing machine), with stern expressions, reality had begun to sink in. Leo had never come back home, the youngest Stone hadn’t even seen him and the parents assumed that she was in on something. She didn’t know how they could suspect them of such disobedience. Okay, so they had performed their share of tricks and pranks in their time, but they had more or less grown out of such things now, and they had never done anything to hurt the family or their friends. A fact that she spat at her parents, her tone filled with indignation and heat which shocked even her – she wasn’t usually quick to anger.
The next day, after a night of no sleep, Matt occupied herself with taking care of Wolf, the boisterous eleven month old puppy that belonged to herself and her brother. Still he didn’t return and the uncomfortable squirm had become a permanent fixture. The twins tended to tell each other everything, a result of their strong relationship and Matt couldn’t understand why Leo would keep something this big from her – thus she had to assume the worst. She swallowed hard as she sat down in front of the Reservation authorities that night, who asked similar questions that her parents had the night before, only with less personal overtones. She didn’t get angry with them; she knew they were trying to help. After they left she excused herself to her room, taking the puppy with her. It wasn’t like they spent every minute together usually, but she suddenly felt very lonely.
The rest of the week continued in much the same vein. She withdrew, didn’t attend school and noticed when it officially became more likely that a missing minor was dead rather than missing. Her brain refused to register it though, this was Leo they were talking about, for goodness sake; he couldn’t be dead! That made it easier to carry on the charade that her parents had set up with her sisters – they thought Leo had gone staying with their grandfather in La Push. She now took Wolf up to her room every night, even though the dog was not allowed upstairs, and she dared her parents to say something about it – they never did though.
By the time the seventh day came along, Matt was feeling fairly desolate. The tension in the house was fairly palpable and she had spent the day in her room, peering out of the window over at the forest, as if her brother was going to appear there are if from nowhere. She had to return to school tomorrow and she was not looking forward to it – it meant that they were moving on, when it was obvious to her that he needed more time to return. It was two o’clock in the morning that she stepped out of her room with the dog for the first time that day, and padded along the corridor to Leo’s, which hadn’t been touched since his disappearance. Through the entire week Matt had insisted on being the strong one, she hadn’t shed a tear, but now that they were approaching the edge of the precipice, she let herself go. She threw herself down on to the unmade bed and put a hand on Wolf’s head as he whined in confusion.
“Sorry, Wolf,” she choked, closing her eyes in the room that the twins had shared as children. Was this really happening?

That week was the week from hell for Leo. It had started off simply enough when he was sent out to look for their sister. When he had heard that gunshot on the reservation. Leo had feared for the worse. His sister was so small and would be easy for a hunter not to see. He was scared, and furious. There was a no hunting in this area for that reason, there were lots of kids on the Makah reservation! If his sister was hurt, he'd find find that hunter and tear him apart. Leo started running off in the direction of the shot when the change began.
Leo doubled over as if in a reaction of pain to the strange sensation flowing through him, his whole body begining to tremble. He could feel something boiling up below the surface of his skin. He started to lose his breath, the change knocking the wind out of him. Leo looked down as he heard the tearing of fabric as his clothes shreaded away and he saw his muscles quickly expanding with size as fur broke through and his entire body changed its form. Within seconds he was no longer standing there on two feet but was on four furry paws. He looked down at his legs which had changed shape. and he could see the fur protruding from his prominent chest as well. He tried to let out a scream but all that came out was a howl which frightened him even more. Leo had no idea what had just happened to him. He would have sworn it was a dream had his senses not felt more heightened than ever before.
Leo took off towards the river, needing to both get away from where his sister may be and needing to see for himself what had just happened. The speed at which his new form moved was astonishing. He had covered so much distance in the blink of an eye. Before he knew it the river was in his view. He stopped mid run, screeching to a halt and pushing up some dirt between his padded toes as he stopped. He slowly walked over, afraid of what he already knew he'd see. Looking down at the river, seeing his reflection, he knew the truth.
Leo stared down into the water, forearms shaking against the dirt as he looked at the face staring back at him. He looked into the eyes of a giant brownish black colored wolf. The face of the creature in front of him had some white markings around the nose and below the eyes but the rest of his body was darker in color. The ears stood up straight. If he hadn't felt the burning below his skin he would have been sure that he was looking at some relative of his Malamute dog. How was this possible? What kind of horrible monster was he? Leo furious bit at the water to break up the reflection, not able to stand looking at that horrible image one moment longer. He started to run again, every thought in his brain on full panic mode. This couldnt be happening to him. He wanted to die.
Leo hadn't realized where he had been running too until he caught scent of what he realized was his sister. He stayed back, not wanting to hurt her, or to allow her to see him looking like this. He felt relief wash over him knowing she was safe as he watched her head back to their house. At least now that he knew she was safe, he could go run away forever. He let out a whimper of pain at the thought that he could never see his family again, that his life as he knew it had ended so quickly and unexpectedly. Why did this have to happen to him? What had he done to deserve this? He ran back, deep into the forest.
It was almost dawn the next morning before Leo managed to find a way to change back into his human form, a now naked form. He hadn't known exactly how he had done it, but was terrified of turning back into the wolf. He curled up into a ball on the ground and started sobbing with despair, eventually crying himself to sleep.
The rest of the week was torturous for Leo. He had changed into the wolf again, this time, discovering that if he focused on it he could change back and forth. He hated the feeling but needed to know if this was a one time fluke or if he was going to be putting anyone around him at risk. He also hoped that by figuring out how to change back, he could possibly control himself better. He spent a lot of time thinking about where he could go. He knew he couldnt live in the woods forever, but he wasn't sure he could go back to his home, put his family in danger like that, continue going to school and living his life as though he wasn't a freak of nature. He was sure that as soon as anyone saw him now that was all they'd see. He had to look different to them, even if his reflection had returned to normal.
It had taken Leo 7 days to decide to come back, give living with his family one last chance. He missed them like crazy. It hurt being away from them, especially Matilda. He only hoped he didnt end up destroying their family. If at any point he thought he could no longer control himself, or was a danger to any of them, he knew he'd run again and never look back. Their safety was his primary concern.
Before heading back there was one thing that Leo still needed to fix. His clothes had been shredded on that first day, and he couldn't exactly walk in his front door naked. That would not go over well with his parents. The sun had just come up and he knew that there was bound to be someone who had some laundry hanging, now he just had to find something he could take without anyone seeing him. Leo hid behind some trees as he scoped out the houses, waiting for the perfect one. He saw one house that only had a couple sheets hanging and a woman's nightgown, something that he definitely couldnt pull off. The next house luckily had a pair of jeans which he quickly stole. Unfortunately they were a little on the tight side but they'd have to do.
Leo slowed his pace as he walked back to his house. For a moment he wondered if this was a bad idea. Perhaps it was better to just leave now. He had already been gone a week. This way he wouldn't have to risk anyone finding out. But the aching feeling in his heart was pulling at him to come back. He never even had the chance to say goodbye and he wanted to see them, to see if he could still be a part of the family. Right now he didnt even know if he could still be human. He tried to shake away his nerves before slowly walking inside, knowing he'd have a lot of explaining to do.
Leo's parents were already awake and downstairs when he arrived. Although initially there was only pure joy in the reunion, seeing their son was alive and well. It quickly turned to tension as they yelled at him about his disappearance and not telling anyone where he was going. Of course he was grounded, that was a given. He was pretty sure they didnt buy his concert excuse either but there was no way he'd tell them where he'd really been, or what he'd been. When they had finished yelling at him, they sent him up to his room to change and get cleaned up for breakfast.
Leo sulked up the stairs feeling guilty for having lied to his parents, but also annoyed at getting grounded. Was that really why he came back? For punishment? Wasn't being a demonic creature punishment enough? As he neared his bedroom he heard the soft 'woo woo' sound of his dog, Wolf, obviously having heard Leo's voice when he had come home. It surprised Leo however when he heard the sound coming from behind his own bedroom door. He opened up the door, immediately getting jumped on by his energetic puppy, and saw his twin waking up on his bed. "Matt?" He said, surprised to see her in here.

It had taken Matt a long time to fall asleep that night, hours and hours, she had seen the day break and had never been fully aware of actually being rested enough to fall asleep. Thus, as all the commotion began downstairs, it was in a state of confusion that it sank into her sleeping consciousness. Her brow had caved in as she lay curled on top of the rumpled bedclothes of Leo’s bed and she shifted a little. However, despite her tiredness, the distinctive woos of Wolf were impossible for her to ignore and she sat up with a bang, embarrassed in case it was one of the parents, and scared in case it was one of the sisters.
“Leo…” she swallowed, hearing her own name being uttered in his unmistakable voice. She blinked at him, her eyes still blurry, though they were fast adjusting to the light. She wasn’t at her best though, her eyes red rimmed, her hair on the right side of her face matted and stuck to the side of her face, where she had fallen asleep on her tears. She didn’t care about that though, she just cared that this was her brother standing in front of her. She bolted up from her sitting position and catapulted into him, her arms wrapping around his neck in a strangle hold.
“Leo!” she repeated, now a joyous, rather than confused tone, glad that she wasn’t a happy crier. She held him close to her for a moment before pushing back to look at him properly again. As she took in his real life, if a little grubby, appearance, a surge of stress-induced anger went through her. She threw an arm at his chest and frowned at him. “Where the hell have you been?!”
Then her mood changed once more and she laughed, pulling him back into a bear hug. “I’m so glad you’re back, big brother!” So happy was she to see him again, she didn’t even notice the scorching heat emanating from him, yet.

Leo hadn't prepared himself fully for seeing the one person who knew him best in the world, his twin Matilda. But seeing her now in his room, staring at him with her big brown eyes. He was terrified as she looked at him, knowing that if anyone saw something different about him it would be here. She'd know something was wrong. She'd feel it. Matt and Leo were that close. He wondered briefly if she had felt any psychic twin thing when it had happened. Did she already know before he came home? All his worries though were temporarily pushed aside as he was just overcome with happiness at seeing her again, after fearing that he'd never be able to come back home. He hugged her as she approached, holding her close but knew he had to play it off as his cover story. He wouldn't have missed her so much if he had just been at a concert, that was how he had to act even if his heart was glad to be back home.
"Hey Matt" He said with a smile into her hair, trying to keep his voice strong and confident in his words. He laughed as she questioned where he had been then pulled him back into a hug. "Glad you missed me sis" He told her, pulling away so he could look at her as he gave his lamest of excuses. "I'm sorry I worried you. I went to a concert with some of the guys, I knew mom and dad would never let me go, so I just left before they could say no....stupid I know, they've already given me the third degree on that one"

Matt smiled into his shoulder as he pulled her into a hug which she could have sworn was as deeply needful of comfort as hers. That’s why she was confused as he pushed her back again and gave her a look that she didn’t see too often, a sort of bloated confidence of trying to persuade someone of something. It was a good one, and she would be swayed, if she didn’t know every expression that crossed his face as if it was her own. What was he up to? She didn’t know whether to be intrigued or hurt that she wasn’t in on it. Her expression twisted into one that was clearly confused and she tilted her head a little to the side. She had no need to act around Leo and she gave him no need to act around her, so she thought. He could trust her, right? The slightest of unsure smiles showed at the corner of her mouth as she considered him.
“What?” she allowed a slight laugh to permeate the word. He was joking right? A concert with some guys was pretty much a lame excuse – one their parents would probably buy, but her? She grinned a little still assuming that he was going to come out with the real story. “Come on, Leo – what’s going on? A concert? Really?”
A frown broke her brow and she lifted her hands to detangle some of her length locks. She even knew that none of the guys from school had gone anywhere, what was he playing at? Surely he would tell her; he always did.

Leo watched Matt's expression intently as he told his lie as rehearsed as it had sounded downstairs to their parents. The big difference was her reaction. His parents had been so happy he was back that they didnt really care much what the reason was he gave as long as he was safe and they could ground him for some sort of misbehavior. But Matt was different. He couldnt remember ever lying to her before, especially not about something this big. They always shared everything so it was no surprise to him when he saw that she completely didn't believe his story.
Though he had expected that reaction from her, it still pained him. He hated lying to her but knew it was necessary, how could he ask her to accept what he was when he hadn't even done that. She would see what he really was, be terrified and run. Their relationship would be ruined by the truth. The only way he saw to keep them together was to get her to believe the lie.
As Matt laughed as he excuse and tried to get him to tell her what was really going on, he turned away, going to pet Wolf a few feet away, not able to look at her as he continued lying to her like this, and afraid that his face would only show his guilt that much more. "I know, not worth a month's grounding right? I wasn't thinking...I really didnt think anyone would be worried about me, I just thought I'd be in trouble when I came back...I'm really sorry I scared you"

Matt’s arms fell uselessly to her sides as Leo turned away from her without any further explanation. Her brows pulled together, though rather than an angry expression, her face remained confused. She just didn’t get why he felt the need to keep something from her, even if he was in trouble he should be able to confide in her. This was really the only direction her mind took her in for the longest time as she watched her brother pet Wolf, who was, of course, delighted to see his master. She bit her lip.
“So that’s it then?” she asked, her tone more careful now, feeling a light colour temper her tanned cheeks. She swallowed, trying to expel the feeling of betrayal, trying to convince herself that he was telling the truth and she was looking too deeply into this. She couldn’t convince herself, though. Her jaw clenched and the lines of her frown deepened.
“Why?” this time her tone was sharp, displaying anger uncharacteristic of her usual mellow nature. She shifted to fold her arms across her chest. “What, you couldn’t even spare half a minute to drop me a text? What’re you hiding? Why won’t-”
She paused, mid-sentence, still too happy to have her big brother back to be too pushy or annoyed at him. Her head bobbed a little, her eyes now on Wolf and she willed her temper to quiet so that she could actually appreciate his reappearance. She couldn’t quite let it go, though; she still didn’t understand how he could think she wouldn’t be worried. Not just her, but their parents as well – it’s not like they had experienced Leo going off the rails before, it was just completely out of the blue. However, this time, when her lips parted to speak, it was in a low, strained voice. “And you did. You really scared me.”

As Leo bent down slightly to pet his overly excited dog Leo was glad that his sister couldn’t see his face right now as it contorted slightly in the pain that he felt as he thought about that week he had been away. He wanted someone to confide in, to tell him he wasn’t crazy, or a horrible freak of nature. But he was too ashamed to even attempt to let anyone in right now. It wasn’t just something you could come home and tell your family. It would have been easier to tell them he was gay. If only things had been that simple.
Leo closed his eyes tightly trying to block out the urge to break down right now. He was in pain, he had missed his family and was terrified of having to leave again, yet he had to act like all of this was nothing. He had take the brunt of the yelling and disappointed looks when what he really needed was comfort. The only one who didn’t look at him with expectations of some sort right now was his dog, who was purely there to show how happy he was to see Leo. But as Leo found himself staring down at the malamute he couldn’t help but notice the similarities of the face before him to the one that had stared at him from the reflection in the water.
Leo’s eyes widened a little, retracting his hand as he looked at Wolf, now seeming like quite the ironic name, given what it appeared Leo had turned into. Was his dog really someone like himself, who used to be human, and had found himself trapped in this form? Was Leo going to eventually get stuck that way as well? Would the dog understand him now if he tried talking to him? There were so many theories racing through Leo’s brain but he knew he’d have to sort them out when Matt wasn’t around.
He turned around again as he heard her voice. He wished he could tell her how much he had missed that voice. How much he loved her, and that if something happened to him, that she should know he always loved her, no matter how he acted, where he was, or who he became. “I…I didn’t think of texting, or calling….I just knew I’d be in trouble, so I thought I might as well enjoy it…I really thought everyone would just be mad” He tried to make it sound more convincing this time but still thought he was failing.
When he heard the strained sound of her voice telling him how scared he was, he couldn’t help himself from going forward and hugging her again. He knew this wouldn’t be the response if he had been off misbehaving, he should be telling her lighten up or something like that, but he was just as scared as her. He didn’t even know what he was anymore. He hugged her tightly. “I’m so sorry Matt…I promise I’ll tell you where I am next time”

Matt’s eyebrows continued to mash together, her anger quickly turning to concern as she heard him stutter his excuses. Was it possible that he was had a reason to be hiding something? And if that was true, did that mean that she should pry or leave him be? She tried to imagine what it would be like if she had a secret; would she want Leo to know? She couldn’t, though, she was genuinely a very open person and though her parents and little sisters didn’t know every single thing about her, Leo did – and even the others could piece everything together if they tried hard enough. She guessed that she just wasn’t really a very exciting or adventurous person – she’d never been off the Makah Reservation other than for visits to their grandparents in the neighbouring tribe, nor did she have any inclination to start doing anything that required sneaking around. She supposed that made her a good teenager, but right now it made her feel boring.
“Oh,” she said, lamely as he told her that he simply didn’t think of checking in. She looked down, away from him, trying to imagine that everything he told her was the truth, even if it did seem suspect. She ‘hmmed’ a little, in a very non-committal manner, chewing on her bottom lip trying to figure it all out, but it was like trying to do so with only half of the relevant information. She wanted to help her brother, not nag him to death, but she didn’t quite get how to do that at the moment.
Before she quite knew it, she felt Leo’s arms encompass her and she rested her forehead on his shoulder, still able to absorb comfort from him despite everything. After only a few moments, however, she pushed herself back, scorched from the heat emanating from him. “Jeez, Leo, you’re burning,” her brow kinked in a concerned manner as he promised to tell her where he was next time. She chewed on her lip – her greatest bad habit – and eyed him uncertainly. “Are – are you alright? You’d tell me if something was wrong?”
She lifted a hand to his face, trying to gauge his temperature like their mother would when they were sick.

Leo knew that Matt wasn’t believing him, and that every lie he said was just hurting her further, but he honestly didn’t know how to fix it. The truth seemed too hard to tell her. He knew he couldn’t just come out at tell her he was wolf, that he changed into an animal, and not just in the moonlight like in the movies, no he was a freak of nature day and night. Telling her it wasn’t any of her business or that it was something that he couldn’t talk to her about seemed almost worse than lying to her. He wanted to talk to her, to have someone that he could confide in and who would hopefully still love him knowing the horrible truth, but he felt too ashamed and scared to admit everything. He was afraid of losing her love, and having her look at him with fear in her eyes, afraid of the monster for a brother that stood before her. He couldn’t live with that. So pain seemed the only thing left to do.
Her hmmm only confirmed that he was a horrible liar when it came to his sister. He wondered if she was able to see how much it was hurting him to lie to her like this, or if she thought that was just part of the lie, the guilt of keeping something a secret.
Despite any anger she was feeling for his deception, she let him hug her, something that he needed. He felt so alone and she was the one person who could make him feel normal, or so he hoped was still the case. But then she pulled back bringing up his temperature, something he didn’t even know about but could only assume was part of the wolf thing. He had remembered that he didn’t feel cold during the nights when he was out, but he hadn’t known that it was something others could feel as well. What was he supposed to say about that. He briefly considered telling his sister he was on drugs, but that seemed like too big of a lie to try to pull off. It would hurt her too much if he ran off to do something like that, and if the temperature never went away, he couldn’t pull off always acting like he was taking something. He wouldn’t even know what drug would cause an increase in temperature.
“I…I think I might be getting the flu or something…I’m kinda tired, I’m sure its nothing…I’ll take some Tylenol”

Concern slowly began to creep over the feelings of betrayal as Matt watched her brother hesitate over what was wrong with him. Whilst she wasn’t entirely convinced that he was being completely straight with her, or at all, she was certain that he mustn’t be feeling himself with a temperature like that. Maybe she as being too hard on him, after all, it wasn’t like they could tell each other everything forever, no matter how disappointed she felt that the time had come so soon. And what was it that really mattered? That he was back, obviously. She knew that a lot of teenagers ran off that their age, admittedly not around there, but still…
“I’m sorry,” she said after a few moments of allowing her feelings of mistrust to fade from her features. “I guess you should get some rest – week long concerts must really take it out of you, huh?”
A light sarcasm tempered the tone of her voice – she really couldn’t help it – but she wasn’t going to push it. She turned around to look at the bed behind her, the screwed up sheets and the tearstained pillow. She guessed she hadn’t slept well. She quickly got to work with tossing the pillows over and straightening the duvet to air out her presence there. If he was really tired and not feeling well, then he would want his bed and an unmattified one at that. With a half-grin that bordered on looking natural, she turned over the corner of the quilt and turned to him once more.
“I kinda grossed out your bed,” she admitted, standing back. She bit her lip a little. “You should get some rest. I’ll fetch you some Tylenol…” She moved toward the bedroom door, turning just as she reached it. “You know I didn’t mean to get all crazy-suspicious, right? I just… I guess I’m not used to being out of the loop. You can just tell me… whatever there is to tell… if there’s anything to tell… when you’re ready, right?”

The truth was that Leo didnt know how to explain his increased temperature, even if he was telling her the full truth. He could only assume it was tied into the rest of his changes that had occurred lately but he had no proof of that. If it hadnt lasted for so long and he had seen and felt the physical proof of it, the fact that she felt him warmer, he would have thought this whole thing had just been a hallucination from a fever. If only it were that easy. He knew he'd much rather have a dangerously high fever that made him a little out of it than be going through what he really was right now. What if his body couldnt handle it though? What if he had come back only to collapse? He tried to erase the fears from his mind before he worried his sister any further, something he seemed to be getting good at.
"Matt you dont have anything to be sorry for. I'm the one who's sorry, for worrying you and running off without letting you know I was ok" Leo said, truly regretful that he had caused her and his parents concern. He nodded as she said how week long concerts must take a lot out of him, even if it was sarcastic. "Yeah I am tired...but you dont have to go, I probably wont sleep anyway, I'm hungry, probably gonna grab some breakfast...at least once they seem to have left the kitchen" He said referring to his parents who he did not want another run in with right now.
Leo looked behind her at the messed up bed as she admitted to grossing it out. "Thanks a lot Mattie" He said with an eye roll, trying to keep things a little lighter.
She then told him she'd go get him the tylenol and he sat on the edge of his bed, watching as she stopped and turned to him. As she said how he could talk to her when he was ready he was on the verge of spilling it all there. "Yeah, I know I can talk to you...and I promise you're not out of the loop, you're still the closest person I've got"

Matt continued to level her eyes at her brother as he assured her that she didn’t need to apologise. She couldn’t but agree that he should be apologising too, but still felt a little guilty for initially being so hard on him without noticing that he was sick. He even looked worried, which wasn’t like him when he was ill, though she knew that he was probably just worried about his parents’ and her reaction to his disappearing act. Hopefully, anyway, she would hate it if anything really bad was wrong with him.
“Okay,” she replied, carefully checking to make sure that he wasn’t just being polite – not an affliction that was usually present between two people as close as the twins. “If you’re sure. I can probably get you something… not exactly a fry-up, but I could definitely help you stave off hunger until they go to work. You’re going to have to face them eventually, though.”
She laughed a little as Leo rolled his eyes at her, similarly trying to lighten the mood, even though, as far as she was concerned, nothing had been resolved – she still didn’t know what he had spent his week doing, and she was fairly certain that he knew that she didn’t believe his cover story.
She nodded, once, reinforcing the idea that he could talk to her as she hovered underneath the doorframe. Turning on her heel, she padded downstairs, accompanied by Wolf, who sensed breakfast in the making. True to her word, she picked up a few bits of junk food (not very appropriate for breakfast time), a small sample pack of a new cereal that had been posted through the door, a bottle of cold water and a token grapefruit. She didn’t manage to do it without questioning, though, but she managed to fob the parents off by telling them she was going out for the day – the good thing about being a generally truthful person was that the odd lie slipped by unnoticed. Just before she headed back up the stairs, she fed Wolf a few biscuits, knowing that he hadn’t necessarily been getting all the best attention over the last few days.
On her way back to Leo’s room, she dropped by the main bathroom to pull the Tylenol from the top shelf of the medicine cabinet. It wasn’t easily balancing all the loot in her arms, but she just about made it through the bedroom door before the grapefruit dislodged itself and rolled across the floor to the bed.
“Don’t worry, there’s good stuff too,” she assured her brother as she tipped her bounty on to his bedcovers. She passed the Tylenol and the bottle of water over to him personally, figuring they would be the most urgent things if he wasn’t feeling well.
