Carlisle chuckled a little at Jayden’s assessment of her own car, being reminded of Bella’s truck, which struck terror into Rosalie’s heart every time she heard its inefficient roar, and into Edward’s whenever he had to suffer its intolerably slow speeds. It suited her, though, and no doubt Jayden would suit her choice of car too, but if she was to become close to the mechanic of the family, he was sure it would be tuned up before she could blink. Again a curiously contented smile spread on Carlisle’s face as each member of his family paraded across his mind.
“There are seven of us, as you’d see it,” he told her, thinking of them in time. “Esme and myself; our sons, Edward, Emmett and Jasper; our daughters, Rosalie and Alice.” He paused, hoping that his next sentence would not cause any more unnecessary tension. He wouldn’t leave Bella out of the family, not now she was so close to them, and Jayden knew about her. He softened his tone a little, though it remained unflinching. “And we consider Bella as a daughter in addition.”
His toffee eyes smoothly ran from Jayden to his wife, including her in his words and then travelled to Edward, hoping that he had not overstepped the boundary in including his girlfriend in the line up. “They have all attended the high school, though Emmett, Jasper and Rosalie have all now graduated.”

Seven. Jayden had never heard of such a large coven, let alone a large coven of vampire abstaining from human blood. She wasn’t sure how to take such news. When she had finally decided to come find Carlisle she had expect a mate perhaps, but nothing more. Yet now she was face with a whole family; as they called it. The idea of family struck a still raw nerve deep inside and quickly her father’s face flashed through her mind. Quickly she pushed away the thought as Carlisle once again mentioned the human.
Flicking her eyes to Edward she nodded to him, hoping to convey that she wouldn’t pursue their previous argument any further now. Both had agreed a truce of sorts while they each tried to pursue the other to their way of thinking. Edward would be an interesting person to converse with on all subjects, he was strong willed and stubborn; her father would say that of her. In truth Jayden looked forward to further conversation with Edward as much as she did with Carlisle.
High school? Jayden was amazed and a little shocked at how deeply this family interacted with humans. The idea of risking exposure by attending high school was enough to worry her into staying away in the past and she didn’t even have to contend with the thirst for those around. She wondered how they did it everyday.
“Is that not dangerous? Exposure and temptation must be daily visitors to your minds as you do this.” Jayden asked the others in the room. She was genuinely interested and intrigued by all this. “How long have you stayed here?” She asked knowing that the lack of aging would cause them to move; part of Jayden wondered if their time was almost up here.

Carlisle’s calm smile pervaded his features as he saw the stunned expression cross Jayden’s face at the mention of high school. It had been that long now since the family had decided to strive for a human existence, they had gone through the rigmarole of the schooling system so often that he had almost forgotten that this particularly must seem quite surprising for someone not totally in the loop about their situation. He remained entirely unfazed by the young hybrid’s concerns, confident that she just needed to see how they lived a little more to get used to the idea.
“We made a conscious decision to try to live among humans, or as close to humans as we can, to try to become something other than the monsters from their fables,” he paused, thinking of his long standing job in the hospitals of America. “It can be quite dangerous at times, but in a way being around humans so much also helps us – when we’re immersed in the scent it becomes somewhat easier… after a period of time. We’ve been through various school systems that many times that it’s no longer a novelty. That’s not to say that tolerance is not a challenge on occasion, though.”
He knew that they all felt the burn of thirst in the back of their throats from time to time, some more than others, and never for him anymore, not even with severe cases of bleeding out. The worst he got now was an awareness of his nature, no temptation, but he wouldn’t distinguish himself like that now, or ever. He was a firm part of this family unit, any hiccup was equally taken upon all of them.
“Edward began school in his freshman year at high school, so we’ve been here for three or four years now. We’re okay for now, but when the age starts to push its boundaries a little more, then we shall relocate, as we have done countless times before. We tend to try to stay in Forks as long as we can – it’s a favourite place of all of ours.”

Listening to Carlisle speak of his children and their achievements, especially them attending high school, she could see the pride in his face and hear it in his voice. Jayden remembered her own father causing a wave of anger and sadness to wash over, she missed him but he lost out on all the chances to be this proud of her; the anger was almost stronger then the sadness.
Carlisle had mentioned been the monster from the humans fables. Jayden wasn’t one of those monsters, she was something different and wasn’t even in the humans stories; the idea no doubt too unbelievable and maybe repulsive. Yet the idea of been repulsive wasn’t what was setting her thoughts off, no, Jayden was actually considering the chance of school. Been unknown to humans could work in her favor and with the help of the Cullen family she might be able to accomplish this. “Am I too old to start school?” Jayden asked, doubtful she’d be able to manage to be a freshman, and hoping she’d at least be in the same year as Edward for the support.
“I think I would like to try school, eventually.” Jayden nodded as another wave of thoughts rushed in to her head and for a moment she daydreamed about the prospect. “Edward, do you not grow tired of learning what you already know?” She directed to the vampire she had fought with moments ago needing to know if he was tired of school as she imagined she would be after a time.

Edward shook his head as he listened to Jayden wonder if she was too old to start school. He was about to suggest that she could probably pass for a sophomore without too much trouble when he heard her thoughts indicate a desire to be in the same year as he was to have some support. If he could help ease the transition for her in any way, he would, even if they had their disagreement earlier. “You’re not too old, you could pass for most any age I could I would think” He told her, giving her the option that starting in his year was possible, but if she later changed her mind she could try a different year.
Edward paused a moment as he tried to decide how to answer the question she addressed him with. “The classes themselves don’t pose much of a challenge for us, its material we’ve all learned repeatedly…but it’s nice to pass for one of them, and to pick up on more of their behavior traits…any educational things we actually have an interest in learning we usually study at night, although once we graduate to college level there’s usually a couple new things we can pick up on with all the different majors”

Jayden smiled at Edward as he reassured her she wasn’t too old for High School, “Funny how even been as ageless as our kind is that comment is still a compliment to women.” She said lightly smiling at Esme, hoping she shared the sentiment, “I stopped again when I was about 10 years old, though I’m older.” Jayden nodded sharing a little of her own history with them as they had shared information with her. It was a fascination of her’s to be frozen at the age you were turned in to a vampire, yet she had aged and eventually hit a plateau.
The idea of school was in intriguing one and discussing the possibilities were exciting, But Jayden curbed her enthusiasm; she still wasn’t sure how long she would stay or if this would work. Listening as Edward spoke in answer to her question she tried to take in his words. Pick up traits, pass as a human, attend college; Jayden’s head swam with everything he said. Doubt set in as to her ability to do all this. Jayden started to question why she had come here, what was she hoping for? Did she really thing she could live in the world the Cullen’s had, away from this own kind and so close to human’s yet still separate. “It all sounds fascinating.” Jayden covered brushing her hair behind her ears. Maybe I should leave, do all this more slowly? Jayden questioned herself as she thought over all she could agree to just by saying yes to school. “Perhaps I’ll think about it.” She said non committal as she rested her hands gently by her sides.

A light smile graced Carlisle’s lips as he listened to his son elaborate on how high school was for him, interested himself to hear his most recent opinion. He could see how it would seem dull to an outsider to repeat learning the same information over again, but the curriculum changed sometimes and it was always a boon to be around humans. Sometimes it did become a little repetitive, but there were always ways to mix it up a bit, such as when Edward enrolled in college, or when he taught classes instead of working at the hospital – it was just as important to teach the up coming generation medicine as to practice medicine itself.
“There is no harm in consideration,” he said lightly as Jayden said she would think about it. He didn’t want to overwhelm the hybrid by pushing her towards the option of high school and interaction with humans any further, neither did he want her to close her mind to the options open to her, though. Extending his arm further around his wife’s waist, his fingers played idly over her hip bone in a motion that he did not need to be actively conscious of to perform. He extended a warm, golden eyed smile to the newcomer. “It’s good to know what options are open to you, even if you choose your own path in the end.”

Carlisle seemed to brighten as he listened to Edward talk, Jayden could tell it was fatherly affection for the boy; it was something she missed since her father had died. While he had been alive Jayden was always aware of the love and respect her father had for her, it had been something she’d questioned after his death and something she still was still unsure of now. Jayden listened to Edward, turning her attention back to him, shying away from the pain Carlisle feelings towards his son sparked in her.
As Edward finished Carlisle spoke again and Jayden had to turn her attention back to him and face the emotions he caused in her. Jayden concentrated on the idea of school and been around humans to avoid thinking of other things, maybe it was something she could do. Jayden let her mind wander over the option of school, it was something new. The very thought of it scared her, but something she wanted to experience. In her life Jayden had only spent time around other Vampires, and very few at that, perhaps it was time to live the other half of herself. “Maybe I should try to interact with humans. I’ve never been around them.” She said voicing her thoughts out loud. “My father kept my very isolated even from our own kind.” She said looking into Carlisle’s warm eyes, but quickly looking away and dropping her eyes to the ground.

“It’s understandable - I’m sure your father was just trying to protect you,” Carlisle said, gently in response to Jayden revealing that she had been kept somewhat in isolation through her youth (for he would still consider her to be in her youth despite being middle aged in human years). He could completely understand why Hayden would keep such a special daughter hidden from both humans and vampires. Vampires tended to be old and did not quickly adapt to new ideas, especially concerning what constituted their own race and to be kept close to humans at such a young age would be a risk. Yes, if he had been faced with a similar situation he would have been tempted to do the same.
“But I can assure you that my family and I accept you as you are, in all that you are,” his golden gaze shifted from the newcomer to sweep across the family that were gathered at that moment and then returned to their guest. “So you have us as the vampire contingent, but you are half human – and no doubt that half is just as strong and important as your vampiric half. You might find you have more in common with them than you have previously thought. I’m not trying to push you into anything you don’t want to do,” he qualified as he realised that his love of human society may be misconstrued as preaching. “I’m just encouraging you to experience new things that we may be able to help you with.”

Growing up Jayden had never been sure what he father had been trying to do when she’d been growing up. She had been raised so secluded she rarely met or saw anyone, those she did meet were a few trusted friends of her father sworn to secrecy. Growing up Jayden had often fought with her father for more freedom, something she regretted now she could understand his point. “He was.” Jayden said with a sad smile as she looked up at Carlisle. “I see that now, just a few decades too late to tell him.”
The patriarch of the Cullen family spoke wisely and Jayden found herself agreeing and understanding his point. She was half of each species and she knew she should experience both. With the Cullen’s as the Vampiric influence Jayden realized perhaps it was time to experience her other side. Jayden nodded. “New experiences seem to be the flavor of my life at the moment.” She smiled lightly. “It is definitely something I’ll consider seriously so long as I pose no addition threat to your family.” She said once again making it clear she meant to harm in her visit, she looked at each Cullen in turn waiting for any protest or objection.
