{Eclipse}
Sally looked down at herself in the full length mirror in the bathroom, biting her bottom lip nervously as she contemplated what the night would hold. It had taken a lot of persuasion from her only full brother, David, to get her to agree to accompany him out to the one underage club – well, café that transformed itself into a ‘club’ at night by dimming the lights and turning off the coffee machines. He really rated the band that was playing that night, even if they were a bunch of high schoolers and he had decided to make it a ‘make Sally sociable’ night. Another thing that had maybe swayed her decision was the fact that she knew Leif was in the band.
She smoothed down her long, patched blue and brown skirt – not exactly fashionable, but could just about get away with being called ‘indie’ – and then pushed her wavy blonde hair behind her ears, though the large fringe hid a lot of her face like usual. Taking a deep breath, she walked down the stairs where her brother was waiting and slowly pulled on her coat.
“Come on,” he insisted, impatiently, jangling his car keys in his hand as if that would speed her up somehow. She did, nevertheless, hurry up, knowing that it was nice of her brother to want to ‘fix’ her. She followed him out to the car and spoke with him about the band on the journey, though she carefully missed out any attraction she felt to the lead guitarist.
When they finally got to the café-cum-club, she hopped out of the car and followed closely behind her brother’s back, almost hiding herself from view. She sat down at his table, happy to be on the fringe whilst he caught up with a couple of college friends that had dropped by to watch the band play. She fixed her dark eyes on the stage and a smile grew on her face as she enjoyed the music and barely realised presence of the crowd that would usually drive her from such a crammed place.

As one of their songs finished, Leif moved over by the amp, turning it down a moment while he tuned his guitar. One of the strings hadn't sounded right during that last song. He didn't need an electronic tuner to tell him when it was off pitch, years of playing allowed his ear to find the sharpness in the note and adjust it quickly, hopefully before it was made noticeable to the audience. From the applause he heard from behind him, it seemed like they were unaware to the mishap.
While one of the other band members spoke to the crowd, getting them riled up, Leif, the more silent member took a drink from his water bottle on stage, keeping his throat clear for the backing vocals on the next song. He turned the amp back up and idly strummed a few notes, waiting for the drums to start and giving a nod to the others as they all indicated they were ready for the next song.
Leif made his way towards the front of the stage and moved in time with the music as he played, giving the occasional backing vocals for the chorus or creating harmony. It was in the zone, perfectly calm and relaxed, more at peace on stage with his music than in interacting with people in normal life. He was free and had an outlet to his artistic expression, giving off another riff as the bridge started.

Sally watched silently as the band continued to play, beginning a song she hadn’t heard before. She really was in awe of how they could make their music sound, each song distinctive from the other and yet each perfect in their own way. She tried to put out of her mind the attraction she felt towards the band’s lead guitarist, the only reason that her brother had succeeded in getting her out of the house that night. She glanced over her shoulder towards the small huddle of college students that included her brother. It seemed that he considered his job done in just getting her to the club, but she didn’t mind saving the table and watching their stuff while the others did more exhibitionist things like dancing.
She sipped at her water as her chocolate brown eyes trained themselves on the band again, not realising that they went straight to the secret object of her affections until she accidentally caught his eye. Even though he had probably caught the eye of more than one member of his audience randomly whilst working the stage, Sally couldn’t stop her natural paling reaction and she dropped her head so that her wavy hair fell in front of her face, playing with the water bottle in her fingers. She knew that any of her brothers or sisters, from Patrick down to little Aubrey would probably tell her that it wouldn’t be that difficult to speak to him, but given the hard vice that was fastened around her chest from just a look, she doubted that would ever happen.
She turned the cap of her bottle slowly, taking a sip of her own water in an attempt to re-centre herself. It was only then that she risked another look up towards the lead guitarist, just as their song was ending.

Leif looked out into his band's audience as he strummed the chords for the verse on his guitar. There was a decent sized group here tonight, some of them dancing in a group not far from the stage. He often felt torn when seeing this, wondering whether he should feel that they were doing a good enough job to get them entertained and feeling the music to move, or whether the group would dance to anything that was played and maybe they needed to find something that would keep their attention longer, and keep them paying attention.
After harmonizing the chorus that came up he stepped back from the mic while he played and looked over at the tables, catching the eye of a girl sitting there that he recognized from school. He didnt think much of it, since being on stage tended to get a lot of people looking in your direction, but still smiled at her, thinking it was sweet she had come, and that she looked pretty tonight, but didnt know if she even saw it as she turned away.
Leif saw her look down and turned his attentions elsewhere as he continued to play but was surprised by the fact that his mind kept returning to her. As the song ended, he looked back over on the last note, seeing her look up again. He smiled again hoping this time she saw it before turning to his lead singer, hearing the guy announce they'd be taking a break before finishing their set. Leif lifted his guitar up, getting the strap off his shoulder and set it against the back wall of the stage. He wasn't usually the type to go up to girls between sets, but something made him decide to say hi this time. Maybe it was seeing her alone at that table, or even just seeing someone he recognized, or the way she actually seemed to be listening with interest.
He walked through the crowd, getting a few pats on the back from guys as he walked by and headed to her table. "Hi" He said when he reached the table, realizing when he got there, that his normally quiet nature didn't make it easy for him to think of what he was supposed to say next.

As Sally looked up at the stage again having waited out the song until the last chorus before doing so, a strange sort of pleasant warmness filled her stomach and chest as she realised that the guitarist, Leif, was looking at her again. She wondered if he knew what he was doing or whether this eyes had a set path that they took around the room when he played - she knew he must be a bit nervous going up to play in front of so many people and so it wouldn't surprise her if he didn't notice anything about his audience - especially someone so insignificant as her.
However, that smile ... it looked like it was beaming straight at her. It was subtle, yes, the same that she had seen him use at school occasionally, one that she had grown to appreciate even when it wasn't directed at her. She smiled shyly back up at him, her own a little unsure, still doubting that he even meant it for her, though she couldn't see anyone else around.
When the song had finished Sally noticed that the band members put down their instruments whilst the lead singer went over to talk to someone backstage. It was with a little disappointment that she realised that they were having a break, not wanting to lose her point of interest, especially now that she noticed that her brother was lost to his friends. He meant well bringing her out, but he knew that she would be more comfortable in her own company rather than with a bunch of strangers. She shifted her dark eyes over the room and only then did she notice Leif make his way through the tables to where she was sitting. she turned her head over her shoulder quickly to make sure that there was no one behind, but she was in the corner and no one was even lingering behind her.
"Hi," she responded, her eyes wide and bright with shock that he was actually talking to her. Not even in passing, not even because she was in his path and he had to because they went to the same school; this was all out of choice. The vice around Sally's chest closed tight and her voicebox shrivelled. "Umm, great - it was a really great set ... so far." She managed to squeeze out, and though her voice was tight, it was genuine too.

When Leif had made the decision to come over and chat with the girl at the table, the smart thing would have been to prepare something to say, so that he wouldn't end up just standing their in silence. Leif however hadn't done that. It wasn't in his nature to hit on girls or use cheesey lines. He had dated before but never used any of the lines the other guys in the band had. He knew his lead singer would probably already have his arm around her, be offering to buy her a drink and playing up the fact that he was the frontman. But Leif didnt want her attention that way, he was just interested in her as a person and wanted to get to know her a little better.
He thought that she looked a little surprised when he came over, but realized he probably would be too. It wasn't as though they really knew each other before and he was coming over to chat with a long time friend. But at least she didnt roll her eyes and ignore him. He smiled as he heard her compliment how his band had sounded so far.
"Thanks, I hope you like the rest of it too" He told her sincerely, hoping that she was having a good time. "You here by yourself?" He asked her, hoping it didnt sound like a pickup line, but just surprised to see a cute girl sitting alone at a table here. "Umm, I'm Leif by the way...I've seen you at school right?"
