Personality and Stats
Basic Personality: Carlisle is a kind and compassionate man, and has been since his human birth back in the seventeenth century. It has been considered by Carlisle himself and others around him that his compassion motivates his self-control when it comes to his diet, which explains why he has never slipped up in his long life and just how he can stand to work in a hospital. Carlisle is also a very family orientated man, caring deeply for his wife, Esme, and his adoptive children, to the point where he will leave his job and the small town of Forks at the drop of a hat in order to protect their identity - such as he offered when Edward first met Bella. He also has an admirable bedside manner, instilling quiet confidence in his patients and those around him.
Species: (Human, Vampire, Werewolf) Vampire (vegetarian).
Abilities: Although he has no quantifiable talent, Carlisle considers his compassion to be the overriding aspect of his human personality that has carried over from the transformation.
Occupation: Doctor.
Car: Mercedes S55 AMG.
History:
Birthplace: London, England.
Family: The Cullens and the Hales.
Friends: The rest of the Cullen family, the Denali tribe, a tenunous relationship with the Volturi and a smattering of vampires over the world that he has had contact with in his long life.
History: Carlisle was born to an Anglican pastor in the 1640s in London, England. The country, at this time, was in a state of religious upheaval, when the churchmen, such as Carlisle's father, actively sought out supernatural creatures - witches, werewolves and vampires - and executed them for their crimes. Of course, this was not an exact science and often ordinary humans were mistakenly put to death. Once Carlisle's father grew older and Carlisle himself was considered to be strong enough, he was put in charge of the hunts for the supernatural creatures. Although he was not at ease with the butchery he had seen his father commit, he was intelligent enough to track down a real coven of vampires in the London sewers. However, even a large group of humans are no match for vampires, and Carlisle soon found himself bitten and left in the street to change into a monster. Knowing that he would not now be welcome at home, he hid himself in a potato cellar to wait out the painful transformation.
When he emerged from the potato cellar three days later, Carlisle discovered what he had become and was truly appalled by himself. He considered himself to be an irredeemable monster and so tried to kill himself in a multitude of ways, only to discover that vampires were more durable than he had given them credit for. Eventually, the thirst for blood became too much for Carlisle to bear and he swooped down upon a passing herd of deer and fed for the first time, discovering that he could live this way.
His hope refreshed by his discovery, Carlisle threw himself into studying, using his skills in the daytime and learning all he could at night. Over the following two centuries he became a proficient doctor and perfected his resistence to bloodlust. It was while he was studying in Italy that Carlisle stumbled across a small coven of vampires known as the Volturi - a refined yet murderous triad of vampires, who attempted to persuade Carlisle over to their way of life, but failed.
After leaving the Volturi in Italy, Carlisle then moved to America, where he continued his work in the medical profession. Whilst he was working in a hospital in Chicago during the Spanish Influenza epidemic, Carlisle treated a women called Elizabeth Masen who astounded him with her sentience in the last stages of the disease. She wanted him to save her son, Edward. As Edward was certain to die of the 'flu and was definitely alone in the world, Carlisle took the opportunity to turn his first vampire out of loneliness and Edward became his first family member.
Not long after, in 1921, Carlisle came across a suicide victim - a woman who had jumped off a cliff due to the sorrow of losing her only child. He felt compelled to change the beautiful woman and the two of them fell in love and subsequently married, adding to the family that Carlisle was creating. Later, he came to treat a young woman named Roselie Hale, who had been raped and left for dead by her drunk husband and his friends, and eventually Roselie brought him Emmett, who he changed for her.
Afterwards, Alice and Jasper joined the family of their own accord and the Cullen family was complete. They changed their names to Cullen and Hale to account for relationships portrayed and moved to Forks, Washington, a place they had already been before Jasper and Alice had joined them, as the Cullens and the Quilettes had worked out a treaty that appeased both werewolf and vampire.
Currently, the Cullens live in Forks, Washington, where Carlisle works in the hospital, where it seems that he frequently treats Edward's clumsy human girlfriend.
