"Are you sure?" Edward pressed as Bella denied wanting to seek any medical care. It was easier when they were back home. If she was sick or hurt, he could take her to his father. Here they'd have to leave the island to get her medical attention. Maybe that was poor planning on Edward's part considering how often she needed to go to the hospital. She was practically a regular. But sickness wasn't usually her reason for going. That was what made him nervous. This wasn't the result of her being clumsy and tripping.
"Was it the eggs? You didn't have to eat them if they didn't taste right...you wouldn't have offended me" Edward said, sure that he was responsible. It then occured to him that maybe it wasn't her food that did this to her. Maybe the bruising during their first night together had been more than superficial. He knew that it had looked bad. But what if he had done serious injury to her? He couldn't even get the words out right now to suggest it to her, knowing that she would deny it even if she knew it was true.
He just nodded as Bella left the room to look for the bag Alice had packed. If Alice had seen Bella sick, then she would have packed any medicine she would need. Edward tried to take comfort in that. She would have even asked Carlisle if it was something serious. There was even the possibility that she was now reacting badly to the fact that they were married. She had been against it from the start, and Edward thought that now that it was over she would be happy, but maybe the realization had finally hit her that she had agreed to the one thing she had told him over and over again that she didn't want. Had it been wrong of him to push the marriage issue with her? Had her nerves gotten her physically ill?
Edward's attention immediately turned as he heard Bella's cry. He was afraid, more than any superhumanly strong and immortal vampire should be. He started going to find Bella, to comfort her in any way he could, and if she needed, get her help. When he finally saw her, he saw the tear going down her face. Was she in pain? "Bella what's wrong? Are you going to be sick again?" he asked, willing to help her to the bathroom.

Bella shook her head, glad that she hadn't had to move far out of the bedroom to find her husband, her limbs were still frozen and she doubted she could have made it all the way back to the kitchen. She stumbled to a halt in front of Edward, her chin upturned so that she had a full view of his face. She needed to gauge every facet of what she expected to be a simultaneously shocked and delighted expression. For a full minute she didn't say anything, but where the one tear started it, more followed, streaming seamlessly down her cheeks with so much a sob or a whimper. She didn't even look hurt or scared.
"Edward," her voice sounded disjointed and far away, she hadn't even closed the gap between the two of them. "How long have we been here?"
Just in case she was wrong. She knew she wasn't though, she could feel it, under the tears and the craziness she was almost glowing. She slowly wrapped an arm loosely around her middle, her brown-eyed gaze not straying from his glorious face for a single fraction of a moment. Not even when the little nudger pushed at her forearm, not with enough force to move it, just enough to let her know he was there. There was another nudge, a tiny bit harder, and a light growl of hunger emanated from her stomach.

The look on Bella's face had Edward beyond worried. He was frustrated at having to keep asking her what was wrong instead of just knowing her mind's thoughts. He couldn't figure out from her expression what was happening and she sounded so...off. It wasn't like her at all, and it scared him. She didn't look like she was in pain, but her tears kept coming. He wished he knew the cause so he could find a way to comfort her.
"Bella..." He said softly, afraid that even a loud tone from him now might upset her further, not knowing what fragile human condition she was currently finding herself in. "Our wedding was 17 days ago" He said not even having to think of the number. "We didn't arrive until late into the next day with all of the travel"
"Bella please...tell me what's wrong, tell me what I can do for you?" He begged her, feeling helpless at the moment.

Infuriatingly, Bella didn't verbally respond to Edward's plea. In fact, her reactions were almost snail's pace, as her brow slowly drew inwards in a concentrated frown. She lifted her hands between them and ticked off the days once more. She had actually underestimated the amount of days they had been there, the time had been flying. Slowly, she raised her head once more to Edward, the tears had ceased, though their track marks remained, and the dazed expression stayed the same. She could feel a warmth spreading through her abdomen, though, and as that feeling swelled, so her expression became more sure of itself, solidifying into a happy, if surprised, one. She drew in deep breath, now looking straight into Edward's glorious amber eyes.
"I think I might be... pregnent," she told him, her voice sounding awed.
A hesitant smile shifted itself on to her face as she said the words and, as if he had heard himself being spoken about, her little nudger punched outwards, visibly moving his mother's skin for all to see. Bella glanced down and again pressed her hands over her stomach, knowing that it was impossible for her pregnency to be so advanced, but what other explanation was there? None that she could think of. In fact, all she could really think at that moment was that she was carrying a perfect child, if it was the one she saw in her dreams. A beautiful baby boy portraying the fine looks of the human Edward, his vivid green eyes, his perfect features. She only hoped that she hadn't diluted Edward's magnificence with her own inferior blood.

Edward's patience was definitely being tested as he waited for Bella to tell him what was going on. It seemed like forever that she stood there in silence. At first she seemed to be counting something. Did she not believe him of the date of their wedding? He was sure that 100 years from now he'd be able to still tell her how many days it had been since their wedding. When she looked back up at him, she was no longer crying. He tried to take that as a good sign, but was too filled with worry to get much consolation from her look.
Edward saw the tentative smile on her face but all he could do was stare as he heard her say the words. She's Pregnant. How could I be so stupid! So careless! Is it really true? Is there any other explanation that could be possible? She can't be pregnant. While Edward's thoughts were racing, his face was still. Only his eyes shifted slightly down to her stomach as he saw the skin move. There was no doubt about it, there was something inside. Something that he had done to her. Edward stared at her stomach in complete shock, trying to figure out what to do.

Bella’s tentative smile dropped into a straight line as she waited for her husband to react to the news. To the good news, right? She was pregnant, with his child, wasn’t that perfect? So unexpected and so precious. She couldn’t imagine taking this news badly, sure, it was a shock, but not a bad one. She tilted her head a little, her features paling as she continued to wait for him to respond.
“Edward?” she asked, her tone tentative, expectant.
Maybe it was just the shock, he would get over it in a few seconds, after all, he had lived his life without ever expecting any offspring. For her, the thought hadn’t yet occurred, it was something that had a likelihood of happening eventually, given the average person’s life, but then her life was not exactly average. She had never actively yearned to have children, but now that there was one growing inside of her she wanted it more than anything else. She knew that carrying a vampire-human hybrid child was probably not easy, but they had been through bad times together before, they would get through this. She couldn’t stop the small smile from returning to her lips as she thought about how loving a family they would be. Loving and timeless.

Edward couldn't manage a reply. He could hear her voice but it seemed so distant right now. He couldn't move. He couldn't make eye contact. He surely couldn't take the inhalation of air that would be necessary in order to produce sound. He just kept replaying their last 17 days over and over in his head. Why hadn't Alice called him to warn him that this was coming? Couldn't she see what a stupid mistake he was about to make? Wouldn't she have known that this would have happened?
The last time that Edward had entertained the idea of fatherhood had been when he was a human. He hadn't even considered it since being turned. Having a child was not something a monster did. He couldn't even imagine being around a baby like that. He had wanted it when he was human, but that desire had long ago been supressed, even if the desire for marriage had remained with him. Unlike his sister and mother, he never yearned for children as he got older.

Bella’s brow furrowed with Edward’s lack of response, her ‘it’s only shock’ theory crumbling where she stood. She tiptoed forward, hoping her movement would distract him from whatever he was thinking. Suddenly past times that Edward had failed to deal with shock were steamrolling into her head - her arrival at Forks High School in the beginning, her stubborn observance of his ‘superpowers’ when he saved her from Tyler’s van, the paper cut at the Cullen household. Each time he had run away, avoided her, tore a hole into her chest. But those days were over now, weren’t they? They were married, for goodness sake, they had promised themselves to each other for the whole of eternity, there was no going back for them, not now. Her heart rate sped up as the unbidden thoughts bandied themselves around her skull, evading sense.
“Edward?” she said again, her voice less sure, the smile gone. The little nudger in her abdomen called for attention again, bashing painfully against the base of her ribs, making her wince. Why wasn’t he happy?
“Tell me what you’re thinking? Please?” she put a hand out on to his granite-like arm. “You’re scaring me.”

Edward hadn't noticed that Bella had started moving closer to him. His mind was far away from this room. He was imagining the kind of creature he'd be able to create. The only thing he could picture was like the legends of the child vampires. Created too young to restrain them from running wild. The Volturi hunting them down and killing them. The child would surely kill Bella. Edward was the reason yet again that her life was in danger. He couldn't believe he had let himself be so selfish, to give in to desire, even if it was what she asked for. He should have known better.
Edward jumped slightly, surprised by her touch, having not realized how close she had gotten. He looked down at her, feeling her warm hand on his arm. He had scared her. Of course he had scared her, he had impregnated her with his demon seed. How could she not be scared of that. Edward slowly moved towards her, putting his arms around her.
"I'm sorry...you don't have to be scared anymore...Everything's going to be okay" He told her, knowing that Carlisle would know how to deal with this. He could terminate the pregnancy, hopefully before any more damage was done. They would have to go home soon.

Bella collapsed gratefully into Edward’s arms, her eyes closing as she pressed her face into the comforting coolness of his chest. The shock had gone, though she hadn’t seen his expression melt into its natural one. She might have missed that, though, given that once she was tucked under his chin there were very few of his features that she could make out properly. She slid her arms out and around him, crushing their bodies together as if to share comfort by full-body osmosis. She inhaled deeply and opened her eyes. No, of course she wasn’t scared now. How could she possibly be scared with those arms around her, keeping his family safe? Edward would make such a good father, so protective and intelligent. The smile grew once more on Bella’s face.
“I know,” she said, eventually, surprising herself with her choked up voice. She could imagine their little family together, Edward and Bella with their little boy. She couldn’t quite imagine what it would be like to bear an hybrid, difficult, probably, but she needed him now - and Edward would help them through it.
She sighed, contentedly and pushed back, wanting to get a full view of the new perspective dawning on her husband’s face, though not before the little nudger could give his daddy a firm kick through the film of Bella’s stomach. Bella smiled and looked down at the little bump, her hands naturally coming to rest over it in a protective manner.
“He’s quite the mover,” she murmured, casting her glance back up to her husband.

Edward's expression remained hardened like stone as he bore the weight of this responsibility upon him. He knew he needed to get her help before it got any worse. He wouldn't let this thing hurt her, or worse, kill her. He had done this to her, he'd make it right...or at least know who to turn to for help. He could hear her voice on the verge of tears. It tore him apart knowing how terrifying this had to be for her, imagining the souless creature growing inside of her. He was surprised she was even able to find comfort in his arms, that she didn't hate him for doing this.
As she pulled herself away he saw a smile on her face. It seemed odd, but he could only assume it was from relief of knowing this would all be over soon, now that they knew what had made her sick. He watched her place her hands over the bump that was forming. "Moving already?" He said surprised. "It's growing too fast...we need to get back right away so that Carlisle can take care of this" he told her as he started moving to begin packing up her bags. "It'll all be over soon"

Bella’s face fell a little at the news that they were leaving. She couldn’t have been pregnant for more than a few days, what was the rush to get back to Forks? She glanced down at herself, now heating up outside of the icy ring of Edward’s arms. Was it possible she looked bigger than just an hour ago? That was impossible, she knew, for human pregnancies, but she knew nothing of hybrid ones. She supposed that there would be some kind of accelerated growth rate if their venom could rewrite an adult’s DNA in a matter of three days. She looked back up at Edward in realisation, he was just worried about her. Yes, if this had been a human pregnancy she should have already had her first scan, dozens of check ups, breathing and parenthood classes. They were missing such a lot! Of course Edward wanted her to see Carlisle straight away, he would want him to check that everything was alright.
She extended a small, loving smile to him as he began tearing around, packing up her things. It didn’t last long, though, as her husband finished off his thought.
What? she thought, alarmed, her arms wrapping protectively over her bump. She watched his motion and replayed in her head that short exchange. Blood roared in her ears as she heard the tone in his voice for the first time. She had so wanted him to be happy that she had placed that feeling into his voice without it being there. How selfish of her! A motion beneath the skin of her abdomen made Bella’s hand stroke it a little.
It’s okay, she crooned in her head. I’ll take care of you. Daddy loves you really, he’s just scared.
She swiftly neutralised her expression and sat down, formulating a plan. She knew that she needed one now, she couldn’t wait until they got back to Forks, if she did she would find herself too swept along in things to get anywhere. No, she needed help now, and the only person she could possibly think to turn to was the one that she had the worst relationship with. How to contact her, though…

Edward could see a small smile on her face as he expressed their need to get home quickly and he began packing. It must have been such a relief to her to know that they would be able to go to someone who could help them. Edward knew that she trusted Carlisle, so of course she would find comfort in that. If Carlisle didn’t know now what to do, he’d be able to figure something out, he always was able to find a solution to their problems.
Edward didn’t even notice when her smile disappeared and her arms began to wrap protectively around her midsection. He was too busy making sure he had everything she’d need. It was a long flight and if she got sick again from this monster, he wanted to make sure there was at least some medicine that might offer her a little bit of relief.
Edward had just about finished packing but knew that he should be warning the others of what had happened first so that they could be prepared for their arrival. With any luck as soon as Bella got there, they’d know a way to terminate this already. He came back into the room Bella was in and found her sitting, glad she was resting, knowing she’d probably need all of her strength to fight off this monstrosity.
“Bella, love, I’m going to call Carlisle, let him know what’s happened so that he’s prepared on our return. You don’t need to worry” He said trying to sound as reassuring as possible.

Bella smiled weakly at her husband as he came back in, not attempting to get up from the floor. She didn’t have to work to look slightly scared and upset, knowing that Edward would assume that it was about the baby, whilst it was really about the possibility of not having him. She couldn’t, however, break the protective ring her arms formed around her stomach as she sat there. She knew she needed help from the one vampire that had held her in the most contempt, she needed to phone Rosalie, perhaps at the same time Edward was calling Carlisle. Would that work? Or would he still be able to hear her? She knew that he could usually hear from a great distance, but could she take the chance that being on the phone to Carlisle would distract him enough to have her own conversation with Rosalie at the same time? Probably not. She tilted her head up to Edward.
“Have you already taken the stuff to the car?” she asked, making her voice sound slightly meeker than usual. If she could get him to go on the trek outside, where he couldn’t use his vampiric speed, she would have at least five minutes to speak to Rosalie. She shuffled uncomfortably and pulled herself up to her feet.
“I kind of need a human moment before we go…”
He could speak to Carlisle, that would tip Rosalie off that something was wrong if they were together, and that way when Bella called her, it may take less explanation and plea for help across.

Edward thought that Bella looked so frail on the floor, her arms around herself, as if she were trying to protect herself from the demon that had been implanted inside her body. He couldn't blame her for looking so scared and nervous. He wouldnt have blamed her for hating him right now either. He nodded as she told him she needed a 'human moment' before they left. He would give her privacy.
"Of course, I'll take our things to the car and call from outside to give you some time, if you need me just call, I'll hear you" He told her, going over to her, and gently giving her a kiss, "I will take care of you" He promised before gathering up their things and heading outside. His cellphone was already opened as he dialed his father.
