Hours earlier Mike had originally asked Bella Swan to go to dinner with him. But upon her suggestion he had asked Jessica Stanley. Initially Mike was slightly disappointed that Bella had turned him down, but now he was excited to be here with Jessica Stanley. She was in fact the girl he was going to the girl's choice dance with, and she was really pretty.
At the time of asking Bella he didn't really think of how that might have affected Jessica. But now that she was sitting in front of him he realized that would have probably upset her, and he felt bad for even considering taking Bella.
Both of them were sitting in the slightly crowded restaurant. Mike sitting across from her at the small two person table. The waitress had just asked them for their drink order and Mike had kindly asked for a Coke.
He turned back to Jessica. "How are you doing?" he asked politely. It was then that he realized he didn't really know a lot about Jessica. Sure, he knew the basics. He had in fact grown up with her, but he did not really know, know her. She certainly was the school's gossip girl, but he was sure there had to be more to her than that.

Jessica smiled happily as she sat across from Mike at dinner. It was really sweet that he had invited her to go out, but she didn't expect anything less from Mike, he was a sweet guy. Her heart was beating a little too fast than normal, but that had started to happen alot when she was around Mike. At least he was somewhat backing off of Bella.
"I'm good," she said smiling. "School is driving me insane. I can't wait until it's over, can't you? I love summer time, though like, it rains all summer here which kinda sucks," she said. "Sorry I'm totally rambling. How about you?"

Mike let out a single laugh as Jess mentioned her rambling. It was odd, he found it kind of cute. "Definitely can't wait until school is over," he told her, returning her bubbly smile with a smile of his own.
"You can always go down to Seattle during the Summer. It isn't rainy all the time there like it is here," he suggested, "We should make a trip down there with others from school." Sure Summer was a few months away, but he was sure the two of them would still be friends then.
Just then a waitress came to take their order. "Ladies first," he directed the waitress, holding a hand out, gesturing toward Jessica. Mike really hadn't made a decision on what he wanted yet and used the time that the waitress was asking Jess for her order to make his final decision.

Jessica nodded. "Yeah we definately should take a trip up there. And we definately need to hang out alot this summer. Even if just in boring old Forks," she said. The thought of hanging out with Mike either along or even just with her friends made her excited.
With that the waitress came to take her order and Mike let her go first. What a gentlemen he was. "I'll have a salad," she said pointing to the specific one she wanted. "You're turn!" she said to Mike, noting that he was scrambling to look at the menu. Jessica didn't raelly bother to look at the menu either but she figured a salad was a safe thing to order with a guy. She didn't want to look like a pig or anything.

Mike laughed at the mention of Forks being boring. "I'm sure we could find something to do," he told her. Though he doubted it would be anything they haven't done. In at town that small it was inevitable that you would find yourself continuously repeating activities.
Mike groaned internally as Jessica ordered a simple salad. Really, why couldn't she order a real meal? Like something...with meat. Probably trying to keep it looking like she didn't eat a lot, he concluded in his mind. He wouldn't have cared what she ordered. He would have probably been impressed if she ordered something like a steak and potatoes. The thought of seeing Jessica with a large meal like that on her plate made a quiet laugh escape Mike's lips. He tried to pass it off as nothing as he ordered.
"I'll have..." he hesitated, "Just a burger in fries." The waitress quickly jotted down their order and left the two of them to talk.

Jessica raised an eyebrow as she heard Mike laugh a little under his breath and she smiled. She wondered what he was thinking about. "Don't think I didn't hear you say that," she said smiling and playfully. She then looked up at the waitress awkwardly who was waiting for Mike to give his order.
Once he gave his order she sat for a moment trying to think of something to talk about. "Soo..." she said and decided to take a drink of her water to fill the fact that SHE, Jessica Stanley, actually couldn't think of something to talk about.

"Say what?" Mike asked with a grin. He didn't recall saying anything about what he had thought about in his head, and he wasn't about to say anything to her about it.
"Soo," Mike said, setting his hands on the table, "How's the family?" Jessica was an only child. But Mike knew her parents. In fact, his mom and her mom talked a lot. Mike's mom got a lot of the gossip from Jessica's. Looked like that gene ran in the family.

How sweet he was to actually care about her family! Most guys wouldn't even bother to care but he actually knew her parents well and vice versa. Her mom was always telling her that Mike Newton was a good kid for her, but it wasn't until now that she really saw it. It was like this year some sort of light switched on between them.
"Well they're both doing well...Just working like, you know, parents do..I think your mom and my mom are trying to get together soon. Kinda funny how they are close. They're friends and so are we," she said giving a smile. Maybe he would say something more about the last sentence, at least she hoped so.

"Yeah," he said, "I don't pay attention to what my mom does outside the home. But I do hear a lot of stuff from her about your mom." He didn't really pay attention to what his mom told him about Jessica's mom, but it seemed like they were friends from what Mike understood. He understood very little about friendships between the female gender.
Friends. Hm. Mike considered if maybe they were something more than that now. But he wasn't sure how Jessica would feel about that. He decided that if she agreed to go out to dinner on a date with him, enthusiastically really, that she must not mind. "Friends?" he questioned.

Jessica's face lit up when Mike questioned when she said they were just friends. She could tell by his voice that it wasn't that he was questiong the fact that they were friends, he was questioning the fact that they were ONLY friends for sure. Her stomach did a happy flip.
"Well officially that's all we are, Mike. I mean.." she started. She needed to just say it and get it over with. "I think it's pretty obvious that I wanted this to be a date with you. But I mean if you want it to just be a friend sort of thing that's totally fine too." She rushed the last sentence out so fast it was probably uncomprehensible. She did have a habit of talking fast, just in general and when she was nervous it didn't really make it any better.

Mike opened his mouth to say something to Jessica, but was interrupted when he saw the waitress approaching with their food. She quickly set the food in front of them and left, giving Mike another opportunity to talk to Jess.
"No," he said, "Didn't want this to be just a friend sort of thing." Mike smiled at her before picking up a fry and sticking it in his mouth. He was glad that Jessica didn't just think of this as a friend type of deal. Bella Swan, his initial date choice, crossed his mind, but it was a reminder to thank her for suggesting this.

Jessica breathed a small sigh of relief. Well at least she knew he felt the same way about all of this that she did. For a second she wondered why on earth Mike had been following Bella around practically this whole year, maybe it really was just to make her feel more welcomed after all.
"Well that's great then that we're on the same level," she said happily. "So are we officially..like..dating?" she asked.

Mike took a bite of his burger before answering Jessica. "I guess that we are," he shrugged. He didn't understand what the big deal was. Maybe it was a girl thing? Sure, he was happy that he was dating Jessica Stanley, officially now, but Jess seemed to be glowing and overall just really ecstatic.
He took another bite, and a drink of his soda before speaking again. "So, I was thinking that when the weather is nicer we should have another bonfire," he muttered.

Jessica smiled wide. She could NOT wait to tell Bella and Angela and her other friends about her and Mike being "official". She'd have to call them AS SOON as she got home.
She took a bite of her salad and swallowed it fully. "Yeah a bonfire would be really fun. I always love going to those. The beach is so nice, or at least for what we've got," she said.

"Yeah, the beach is really nice," he told her with a smile. The beach was really nice, on sunny days at least. Though, even when the weather is nasty, and the waves are crashing against the rocky cliffs of First Beach, it's actually kind of nice. Kind of eerie though.
"You know," Mike started, "The other day when Tyler and I went down to First Beach we saw some of the La Push kids jumping off the cliffs into the water. It looked kind of fun, we have to try it."
