Mara leaned her head on the steering wheel of her car, and listened to the rain softly pelt her windshield, the sound was some what soothing to her tattered nerves. She was not ready to leave the warm confines of her car—and it had nothing to do with the fact that it was raining—she wasn’t ready to brave Forks High school. She knew what awaited her behind those prison walls, she’d gotten a taste of what it was going to be like yesterday when her and her mum had gone to the local grocery store and they had been stared at like an attraction at a local zoo. She grimaced and it only seemed to get worse when here and her mother talked to people in the store—and there Scottish accent flowed into each word—much worse because not only did they stare but they gushed over there accents.
She rolled her eyes, she had no doubt that it would be the same way here, she knew that she would be treated like the new shiny toy—and she didn’t want that at all. For some reason Americans were fascinated with accents that came out of the British Isle, she’d experienced this fascination several times while in America. It thankfully hadn’t been that way in New York, that place was so densely populated with so many different cultures, that having accent was like carrying a Prada Purse—an accessory. She’d tried several times this morning to convince her mother that home school was the best route to go, that she didn’t need teenage interaction to be happy. Her mother had just tsked and said “Och I’ve never known you to be scarred of anything.” Mara chuckled her mother knew exactly what to stay to goad her into going to school, she never backed down from a challenge—and this was definitely a challenge. She sighed, she couldn’t just sit here in her car people would think she was some nutter. Mara cut the engine, grabbed her back pack, and pulled the hood of her coat over her head before she stepped out into the rain. She watched several girls run by her grumbling about the rain, she lifted her face towards the sky, she loved the rain, it always reminder her of home. Mara smiled she was already in love with her new home, the area that surrounded Forks was beautiful; lush and green—just the way she liked it. It was as close to home as she was going to get, she didn’t know how many times she’d thanked her father for moving here—it was a lot though. Mara sighed she could stay out in the rain all day if it was her choice—but it wasn’t. She hit the alarm button on her key pad—out of habit, and went in search of the office.

Alex pulled into the parking lot as the rain hit the windshield of his truck. Another rainy day in Forks, but that was what his life had become. He had come to school a little earlier than usual to see if he could change classes from World History to an elective since he had already taken it freshman year. Alex got out of his truck and flipped the hood of his sweatshirt on to protect himself from the rain. He grabbed his backpack out of the passenger's seat and shut the door before walking towards the entrance of Forks High School.
When he got to the office and explained to the secretary why he had come she went to a back room to pull out his schedule and help him try and figure out a new class for him. Alex sighed and went to sit in one of the chairs in the office. It would probably be a few minutes before she came back. Alex started thinking about the tests he had that day and how life had been really boring lately.
He was naturally smart so school wasn't ever too challenging, but he didn't have much excitement going on. Alex's thoughts were interrupted by a girl walking into the office. He had never seen her around before so he knew she had to be new to the school. Alex also noticed how beautiful she was and the fact that he would be the first one to see her at school.

Mara opened the door that was labeled front office, and was blasted in the face with warm air. It had took her forever to find this stupid building, this school was so unorganized in it’s set up—or maybe she was just used to the fact that in New York she hadn’t had to go outside to go to another class. She pulled her hood back and shook her hair out, the rain really had only one down side in her opinion—in that her hair and it didn’t get along very well. If she got it wet she looked like Dianna Ross or a poodle having a bad hair day. She hated her curly hair, and the crud she had to do to get it straight. She sighed when she noticed that there was no one standing behind the counter, at least she thought it was a counter—it was so cluttered; with papers, flyers, books, and baskets that it all could have been sitting on top of an elephant and you never would have known. Mara tugged on a strand of her hair if she didn’t hurry she was going to run the risk of being late to class—and that didn’t even sound appealing. She didn’t want another reason for people to stare at her. She muttered under her breath what she would like to tell everyone when they stared in Gàidhlig, they were of course words that if her mother heard her saying she’d threaten to wash her mouth out with soap. It wasn't often that Mara spoke Gaelic strictly for the reasons that she didn’t know a whole lot, she knew the basics—enough to get her by if she ever need it—which she doubted she ever would again. She looked around the room, praying that who ever was in charge of this war zone would hurry up. Most of the walls were covered in an array of different colored posters and flyers—most of them were advertising different events happening in the school. Her eyes widened when they connected with a pair of green eyes, she finally noticed that she wasn’t the only one in the office. Her cheeks grew hot, well at least she hadn’t said what she wanted to tell people in English. That would've only made this ten times worse, She smiled at the boy—hoping he wouldn’t notice that she was blushing. Her smile usually had that affect on people, her mother and her father both called her their little witch—because every time she unleashed her smile people seemed to become almost entranced. She noted that the boy was handsome, he had a face that if he were famous girls would stick to there bedroom walls and moon over. Well she better say something and stop staring, before he though she was doing just that—mooning over him. Mara's smile widened and she pointed to the desk area. “Hello, I dinna suppose ya ken how long he or she’s going to be gone I dinna want to be late for class” Mara smiled at the boy, and prepared her self for the shocked look she was about to get—she usually did when she asked people a question

Alex couldn't help looking at her. She was gorgeous. Not just a little pretty. This girl was amazing and he thought he could control himself from blushing until she smiled. Alex couldn't help the slight flush that rose to his cheeks and noticed that she was blushing too. He was a little surprised when she spoke and a thick accent accompanied it. It was enough to make him blink and cough before he answered.
Alex had no idea what she had just said so he laughed a little and said, "Um, I have no idea what you just said." Alex got up from his seat and held out a hand. "I'm Alex Morrison, it's nice to meet you. If you need me to show you around once you're finished in here I'll be glad to." Just then the secretary came back out and after Alex shook the girls hand he walked back to the desk.
They had decided to give him a free period instead so now he had extra time during the day to do what he wanted to. Alex said to her, "I'm gonna show her around school after this. She's new." Alex stood back a little to let the new girl talk to the secretary and waited for her to finish.

Mara smiled as she watched a blush spread across his cheeks, apparently she wasn’t the only one a little embarrassed. He was really good looking—she had to admit, she liked the way his eyes almost danced in the light. She was a sucker for guys who had interesting eyes. She stifled a groan when the boy told her that he couldn’t understand her, she hopped that this wasn’t going to be the routine for the whole day, ‘I’m sorry but I cant understand you’ or ‘huh…what did you just say’ She grimaced she had a feeling that was exactly how it was going to be. He held his hand out and introduced him self as Alex Morrison, and said that he’d be happy to show her around. This was a good thing because she was probably likely to get lost again. His warm hand had trying to not blush even further, a feat she wasn’t accomplishing very well—she could feel her cheek blazing even hotter. She opened her mouth to introduce her self but was cut off by the appearance of the by an elderly lady who she assumed was the secretary. She moved a few papers this way and that way, unearthing a name placard. Alex pulled his hand away and moved so she could talk if the name read right on her placard Mrs. Cope, she smiled at her. “My name is Mara McBain I’m new here and I need a schedule of all ma classes” Mara felt like she had just had her teeth pulled, it was hard trying to make it so people could actually understand what she was saying. Mrs. Cope smiled at her and shuffled through the stack of her papers, Mara was surprised when she pulled out a white piece of paper and handed it to her. “Welcome to Forks High school Miss McBain, we’ve been expecting you for sometime now. Now here’s a list of your classes and as Mr. Morrison has offered to show you where you’re to go I wont bother finding somebody for you” Mara smiled at her and turned away from her desk, she glanced down at her schedule and saw that she had gym first. She looked back up at Alex and smiled. “well looks like your gonna be ma guide for the day, I hope you dinna mind…Ma first class is Gym” She pulled her hood back up and stepped back out the door with Alex close behind her. Out of habit she raised her face to the sky again. If this is what the weather was like in forks then she was going to like it very much indeed.

Alex followed Mara out of the office and walked outside where he flipped his hood up to protect himself from the rain. He led Mara to the gym where all P.E. classes were held and held open the door for her. Before she went in Alex asked, "Do you always stare at strangers like that?"
He blushed at having asked that, but she had definitely been staring at him in the office. Was it possible that she liked him? Alex wasn't sure but she was extremely pretty and as far as he knew single. He was over last year's drama with Elaine and they were still friends, but he hadn't even looked at anyone like that until now. Alex was still leaning against the door waiting for her answer. He also couldn't wait until lunch when he would be able to sit with her and talk more.

Mara stifled a groan, she hadn’t been as discreet in her observation of him as she thought she’d been. She felt like a kid who’d been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Well she couldn’t help staring at him, he’d done the same thing to her—and it been a while since any one had looked at her that way—three years to be exact. He was just so cute, and he had that boyish quirky charm that she loved. She smiled at Alex he was blushing again and rain was running down his face, the combination of the two was making him look even cuter—and even harder to concentrate. “I dinna think I was starin at ya butt if I was I am sorry fer that” She hoped that at least he was understanding her a little better, it always took people awhile to get used to her thick brogue—and some people never got used to it. She looked inside the gym door, she wasn’t looking forward to this at all. She wished that Alex had Gym with her, so she would have some one to talk to—but it didn’t look like he did at all. This was the part she hated about starting a new school, not knowing any one, and feeling out of place was really hard. She pulled out her schedule from her pocket and looked back at Alex a small smile playing across her lips. “I dinna suppose ya have any classes with me” she crossed her fingers behind her back, she really hoped that they did she really liked talking to him.

Alex was disappointed that he had to tell Mara he was only in one of her classes right after lunch. He could see from her expression she was hoping the same thing he was and he blushed a deeper shade of pink when she smiled. Her smile was beautiful just like everything else about her. Alex was already thinking about the next time he'd be able to see her. Leaving her so soon after they just met and started getting along sucked. He smiled at her though and said, "I only have one class with you right after lunch. It's Literature though and the teacher really likes me. Actually all the teachers kind of like me, but that's irrelevant. Maybe you could sit by me in class and at lunch later Mara?"
Alex didn't wait for her answer because he didn't think she'd say no and grabbed her hand before leading her inside the gym. He took her to where the girls locker room entrance and said, "I guess this is it then...I'll see you at lunch?" He smiled at her again and looked into her eyes hopefully for the answer to be yes. Alex really liked Mara and even though they'd just met he knew they'd be close. Maybe not a relationship, but really good friends at least. That was really up to her though. Alex hoped for the prior, but he never knew what women were thinking.

Mara watched Alex’s cheek flush; maybe he was hoping that he had more classes with her too. She shifted a bit, he was staring at her again, and she could feel her cheeks heating up—again. It didn’t help that he was smiling at her either, that mans smile could melt steal. She felt her happiness dip, when Alex told her they only had one class and lunch. She sighed, well at least she had one class with him—and of course she’d be able to talk to him a lot during lunch. She felt her cheeks flame, when Alex grabbed her hand and led her towards where she assumed the girl’s locker room was. He came to a halt still clutching her hand, his hand felt wonderful in his, her hand was a bit smaller then his, but it was just the right size. She didn’t want to let go of his hand, so she didn’t point out that they were still holding hands. She was really confused, they had just me each other, and here she stood holding his hand, and not wanting to let go of it—maybe the clean air was making her mental—to many years of New York air, her brain wasn’t used to this clean stuff. He shot her that same, bone melting smile, she felt her hear stop and start again. That thing was a deadly weapon. He wanted to know if she’d sit by him at lunch and in class—was the pope catholic. A smile slowly spread across her face, and a blush. “Och I’d lov’ ta sit next ta ya in Class and at lunch” before she could ask her brain if it was crazy her mouth blurted out “ya not gonna get rid of me tha’ easily” She couldn’t believe she just said that, well she’d stepped out there a bit more now Alex had to come out and join her out on the ledge, and if he didn’t then they would just be friends. Her cheeks flushed, she just realized that she’d been rubbing her finger over the back of Alex’s knuckle; ok this was a little embarrassing.
