{Early Eclipse}
Elan Rivers stopped to take a look at his reflection in the nearby pool of water; or rather, the wolf that was formerly known as Elan Rivers, took another look at what he had become. Exactly the same as the last fifty times he had done so, he cowered back from the reflective pool, a pained whimper emanating from this throat. He didn’t understand, he could barely comprehend what he happened to him; if it wasn’t for the very real paws he saw himself stood on, he would have thought there was something wrong with the water.
He had been like this for a full day now, utterly alone, though he hadn’t strayed too far from the reservation. Despite the tough act he liked to put on when hanging around with the kids at the beach, Elan had been firmly brought up with the idea of supporting the family. He had taken more than his fair share of time at his brother’s side, both when things seemed better and when it didn’t seem like things would ever be better again. Though he rebelled against his parents and teachers, as was a teenage prerogative, he was always there when it counted. He was the kind of kid that would happily go out and illegally get a tattoo, but would never tell his family that he didn’t love them. But where was that support now? A feeling of rolling sickness went through his rather scrawny, sandy coloured stomach – he’d always known something would get him one day. His poor parents… had they finally got Cole back after so long only to lose their youngest son?
He picked himself up, closing his eyes and really concentrated on who, and what, he used to be. The overwhelming panic, however, made it very difficult to concentrate properly, and his form refused to pop back into its previous incarnation. A growl of frustration escaped his throat, becoming more and more fierce with every failed attempt. His muscles were as tightly wound as pistons as he tried, but despite this strength, he was helpless.

Cole was worried. His brother had been gone a full day now, and the family had only realized it within the last couple hours. At first they assumed he was just out with friends, Elan being the much more sociable of the brothers, it was never out of the ordinary for him to be out mingling. But he didn't come back, he didn't call, and there was the increased temperature they had all picked up on the last couple weeks. Cole wished he had been more observant, hoping that the change hadn't happened too long ago, and that if his suspicions about what had happened were correct, that his brother was doing alright, that he could talk him down.
As soon as Cole entered the woods he stripped himself of his clothes and with a leap his body began erupting with a very light blondish, or sandy colored fur. The bone structure changed, his muscle mass tripled in size and he landed back on the ground on four paws, fully phased into the wolf he was. He took off in a sprint, not sure which direction to look for his brother first, but desperately needing to find him and make sure he was alright. He took a quick sweep around the reservation before heading out a little further beyond the perimeter.
Elan!! Cole called out repeatedly with his mind, listening intently for the thoughts of his brother. Elan its me, I can help you! Don't be afraid....Elan!

What?! Elan banked around steeply, trying to figure out where his brother’s voice had come from so that he could run from it. Of course he knew that Cole would never be able to recognise him in this form, but he was a wolf, for goodness sake; what was he supposed to do, eat him? Attack him, maul him to the ground? None of those prospects pleased Elan one little bit, so the only option left to him was to run. If he ran now, though, did that mean that he would always have to run? That prospect also did not please him, but it beat becoming something he didn’t want to be in front of those that he cared most about.
There was one problem, however. As Elan listened carefully for his brother’s voice, careering around in a loose circle, unconsciously trying to find his scent, he already knew it was useless. The voice that entered his head wasn’t coming from anywhere outside, he wasn’t hearing it, it was like the voice was being placed inside his mind. A worrying concept. He banked around again, narrowing escaping a young spruce that he felled with his haunches, but then he ground to a halt. His large circle had managed to take him around a mile away from his start point, though he couldn’t even fathom that he had moved so far. Help me how? he asked, dismally, shaking his furry head in confusion. Cole? What’s happening?

Cole heard the voice of his brother respond to his calls and immediately turned int he direction he could most strongly feel his brother's presence. He felt relieved to have found him, to hear that he was alright, but he hated seeing how upset he was, and knowing how afraid he must be right now to be experiencing this alone. He wanted to help him. He just hoped that he could get to Elan before he kept running from him. He could hear the fear in Elan's thoughts, worried that he'd hurt his brother. He hadn't figured out yet that Cole was the same as him.
Cole ran faster hoping to catch up with his brother. Elan stop runnng, I know what happened, I can help you Cole repeated his thoughts to his brother. Try to stay calm...i know this is alot, but you're not alone. It happened to me too, you'll be okay. Cole said finally slowing down as he caught sight of the other wolf that he knew had to be his brother.
Don't be afraid, but I'm right here, I can help you if you'll let me. Cole said letting out a soft whine, afraid that a bark or a howl would scare off his brother, but wanting to alert him to how close he was and show him that it was really happening.

(OOC: Not as short as I had thought!)
As he ran from the danger of hurting his brother, Elan’s thoughts swayed crazily from one subject to the next. Firstly, an the most dominant in his mind, was the fear of hurting his brother – he had thought he could remain secretly near his family, though now his panicked thoughts had realised that he could be dangerous, he was beginning to second guess his assumption. Then there was the fact that Cole’s voice was in his head, for he was convinced that it was him – either that or he was going crazy… and seen as he appeared to be a giant wolf, maybe that wasn’t so far off the mark. He stopped suddenly. Maybe that was it, maybe he wasn’t a giant wolf at all, maybe he was just imagining it.
I’ve stopped now, he thought, cautiously, in response to Cole’s plea. Just a s he was beginning to wonder whether he would see everyone as giant wolves now, the rest of Cole’s thoughts filtered through. Wait, what? You… You’re…
Elan couldn’t help the sense of relief that surged through his muscles and his mind. If there was someone he could choose to share this with it would be his brother, but didn’t that mean..? What are we? he asked, miserably, allowing a soft whimper to sound from him. He cringed at the sound. Maybe they would both have to leave… that would be tough, but what other choice did they have? He couldn’t understand or even begin to imagine that they could switch and change forms when they pleased – he hadn’t even applied the term ‘werewolf’ to them yet – it was too fantastical and there was no full moon.
Elan swung around suddenly, a scent catching his nose, though he couldn’t properly understand it. It was vaguely familiar, no, very familiar, and yet he could be certain that he had never smelt something so intricate before in his life. That was when he first caught sight of his brother in wolf form. Immediately the hackles on the back of his neck rose and an unintentional growl sounded from his chest. He wasn’t trying to scare or threaten the other wolf, he was just frustrated that he could see the blond wolf as being the same as the big brother that he had always looked up to. Cole had just gotten better, this wasn’t fair on him and Elan couldn’t possibly understand why the elder boy wasn’t freaking out more than him.
Cole? he asked, unsurely, now almost certain that the other wolf was him, but similarly fearful of what they had become, of what this meant for them. Slowly, as he considered this, Elan’s growl transformed into a slow crying whine. How can you possibly help? Is this what we are now, forever? How did this happen? Why?

Cole let out a sigh of relief as Elan stopped moving. It was a start. A very needed start since he knew he couldn’t hold the necessary conversation with a moving target. Or at least knew it would be difficult. I am Elan…I’m like you He focused his thoughts in his brothers direction wanting to be sure that he knew he wasn’t alone. Cole hadn’t always been well enough to be the type of older brother Elan deserved. The kind that could look out for him and protect him, but now he felt like he could. He could help him through this, and he didn’t want to fail his brother now.
Cole heard his brother’s question of what they were, but waited until he saw him before saying anything. He knew Elan had picked up his scent, his heightened senses already working. But as Elan caught sight of him he saw the reaction the site of Cole had produced. It was an aggressive stance Elan had taken, hackles up and a growl. As much as he knew that was a normal reaction to seeing another wolf right now, it still bothered Cole that he couldn’t have made it easier on Elan so he wouldn’t have felt that emotion.
It’s alright Elan, its me, I’ll explain everything to you he repeated his thoughts, slowly taking a few steps forward. He didn’t want to make it harder for Elan but wanted to show him the support his younger brother needed. He took a deep breath knowing he had a lot to explain. He hadn’t been a wolf very long himself, and hoped he had enough answers to ease his brother’s mind. If he knew it was coming, he would have gone to Sam or one of the others, and asked them for help in explaining things. The elders had been there for him, now he had to help his brother.
We’re shapeshifters, werewolves. Cole started, knowing telling him this would be the hardest. All of the legends about our ancestors becoming wolves, they were true….Elan I promise I’ll do anything I can to help you, you’ll be okay. Cole insisted.
He hesitated at his last question of if he’d be like this forever. It would always be in his blood but he wouldn’t have to, or at least from what he had learned. You wont always be in this form, you can change back…when I first got healthy, that’s when I started changing. he said hoping it offered his brother some consolation. I think you’ll always be able to turn back, but in the legends, they had the choice not to after awhile. We’re like this so that we can protect the reservation.

Despite the overwhelming panic filling Elan’s mind, the one poignant thought that came from Cole ‘I’m like you’ began the calming process, at least partially. Even though they were both most likely outcasts now, at least they weren’t alone. In a brief moment between one surge of panic and the next, the rather scrawny wolf wondered just why he couldn’t sense the same level of abject horror in his brother’s thoughts as his own had, but then maybe this thing only worked like speech, no emotion. How did Cole know how scared he was then? Had he thought so? It was so difficult to keep track of, thoughts came and thoughts went without note and who said that he ‘sent’ everything he thought?
He stood, his muscles quivering, even though he was already in wolf form, though rather than anger or aggressive tendencies fuelling them, it was more the anticipation of it. He expected at any moment to fly forward and maul the sandy wolf and the thought frightened him to death. He had lived more or less his entire memorable life under the threat of losing his elder brother, it was odd and immensely sad, but it was a part of his life – all he knew. But how would he react to being the cause? Even the thought made his stomach turn. He stood poised, the growl dying in his throat, stuck between wanting to run to his brother for comfort or as far away from him as he could get to put him out of danger. Finally it was the fact that he could see his brother as a wolf; a wolf that wasn’t shaking and growling, that seemed perfectly comfortable with what he was.
I won’t hurt you? he asked in his mind, watching as Cole stepped toward him. He didn’t feel the urge to pounce on the other wolf, but that didn’t mean it wouldn’t happen. He froze as Cole began his explanation of what they had become, even the shaking shocked into submission. Shapeshifters, werewolves? What… But they were just legends!
Despite the obvious proof that such things existed, Elan’s mind was just not getting around those stories he heard as a child being true. If those stories were true then what stopped other things being true as well? Demons, sphinxes, vampires? They were all as deeply ridiculous as werewolves; did he know the world at all? He looked at Cole, remaining motionless. Everything was true?
He really wished that he had paid more attention to the content of the tales now, rather than just the general theme. His ears perked up as his brother went on to recall the part about changing back and Elan began to remember a little of the legend surrounding wolves becoming human for various reasons. Immediately his thoughts and muscles relaxed as he realised that he wouldn’t be stuck like this forever more. Thanks bro, he thought at him, bowing his head slightly. But how do you do it? How do you not be a wolf?

No you won’t Cole responded to his brother’s concern for hurting him with his own thoughts. And if from instinct, or fear you try…I can handle myself, I’ll be okay. Cole said, not wanting his brother to worry if he wasn’t able to stop himself from attacking. While Cole hoped he wouldn’t have to fight his own brother, he knew he was scared right now.
Cole nodded the blond furred wolf head in a swift motion. They were legends, but they were based on truths He said, closing his eyes for a moment and trying to show Elan his own memories of when he turned to a wolf. Maybe seeing it happen to him would make him feel less alone.
He knew his brother was still confused. Cole had felt the same way when he first changed. He thought he was dying at the time which had confused him even more, but eventually the elders had straightened him out. He nodded once more. All of it, as far as I know…I don’t remember all the legends, but from what I’ve heard its all true…the reason we’re like this is to protect the reservation, just like the legend says.
Its kinda hard to explain until you’ve experienced it the first time, but I’ll talk you through it the best I can. Cole responded as his brother questioned how to change back so that he wasn’t a wolf. What can be even harder is not changing the next time you get upset, you need to stay calm…try to stay calm now too, it’ll be easier when you try to phase.
Cole started walking again, knowing he needed to be at his brother’s side right now, not speaking across a distance. I’m coming to you…don’t be afraid. He told his brother, keeping his posture low and as nonthreatening as possible.

Despite the confidence in the tone of Cole’s thoughts when he assured his younger brother that he wouldn’t hurt him, Elan still remained on tender hooks, ready at any moment to catapult himself backwards should he make a move towards the blond wolf. He looked towards his brother, his mind transparently remembering all those times he had seen Cole at his weakest through eyes of different ages and his scrawny legs took a step or two back – he just couldn’t imagine it ever be alright or safe to attack him. It took him a minute or so to realise that whatever he had been thinking about then had probably beamed directly into Cole’s head, maybe.
Sorry, he apologised, whimpering a little in regret for where his thoughts had taken him. The set of his eyes changed a little as his wolfish brow twitched in what would have been a frown if he had been human. I suppose you did see… or hear… how does this work, the mind reading thing?
Elan trod the ground where he stood, his large paws soon completely trampled the undergrowth into a soft, slightly damp bed. He no longer felt in danger of attacking his brother, now feeling more in control of his own mind, but that only waylaid a slight fraction of his agitation. He wasn’t the kind of person that reacted well to change, and this kind of upheaval sent his nerves on edge. Still, as Cole spoke… thought… whatever… about the legends being true, Elan’s imagination and interest was captured and he slowly came to a stand still, looking directly back at his brother in silence. He watched as somehow the vision of Cole’s memories appeared in his head, a weird sensation of an alien memory accompanied it, but it was much more than that. Slowly, the trembling in his limbs subsided and he began to get more curious.
So we protect the Reservation? Elan asked, his head now up and alert as he tried to think through all these new things that he had learnt (or old things that had turned out to be true, as the case may be). His wolfish brows were still drawn in to the equivalent of a frown, though he was more confused now, all the time becoming less frightened. Just the two of us? And who do we protect it from… it’s not like there’re any Cold Ones around here… unless… The Cullens? No freaking way.
He continued to stand his ground as Cole began to explain that phasing back to human wasn’t the most difficult thing to do, but perhaps stopping himself from phasing back to a wolf might be an issue. Elan didn’t really like the sound of that – he couldn’t see the group that he hung around with at the beach being accepting of a werewolf and he did have a bit of a tendency to get frustrated with people at the drop of a hat. So you can’t just… turn it off?
Standing stock still once more, Elan assented to Cole’s approach in his mind, but sheer nerves at being a danger to his brother resurfaced and Elan stopped breathing in case any motion would trigger some kind of feral attack. Why, though, Cole… why are we… what we are? Is dad?

Cole could hear the doubts in Elan's mind as he pictured how Cole had been during their childhood, thinking that Elan would never be able to attack the week boy he once was. Cole knew he had done a lot of changing since that point. He was stronger now and could handle himself. Though it was still nice of his little brother to try to look out for him.
Cole heard Elan apologize for his thoughts .Its okay, I've gotten a lot stronger since thenHe let him know. I dont know if its mind reading, or what you'd call it, but we can hear each others thoughts, the thoughts of any wolf who's phased at the time. So if you have a secret, try not to think about it if you don't want other guys from the rez hearing
Cole nodded his large blond wolf head as Elan began understanding about the legend and asked about pretecting the reservation. We do, but its not just the two of us, there's a group...a pack of us. And more are changing every day....yeah the Cullens..weird huh?
Cole could hear the anxiety in Elan's thoughts as they discussed changing back and forth. Once you get the hang of changing, you can go back and forth when you want...its just that if you get really upset and you dont stay calm, it can kinda just happen before you realize it
Cole wasn't nervous as he approached his brother. He loved him and kept his thoughts calm and peaceful as much as possible to keep Elan calm as he walked over to him. He could see Elan holding his breath as if waiting. You won't hurt me He reminded him as he walked over and stopped just a couple feet away. See?
Why them was a harder question for Cole to answer. He didnt know why some of the Quileutes changed and others didnt. Only our tribe changes, something about our blood and our history with the legends...Dad isn't, but he knew the legends...I think he might've if he was younger when the Cullens came back, or any other vampire was around...but Sam says their arrival is what reactivated the gene or whatever in us to change.
