Some things were instinct, where as some were learned and taught. The instinct to hunt and feed was one every being, human or animal, was born with. What, how, when and where, were the things that were taught.
Kate could remember the urge to feed always been with her, true sometimes it was less then others but the burning was always there. Before she had learned how to resist humans the slightest scent or sight would light the fire under the burning and she would stalk, hunt and kill her prey. Learning other ways and other food sources helped curb the carnal instinct, and eventually sedate the need for Human blood.
Now, Kate hoped to pass on the same tools for learning to another, if he took could curb his desire for human blood then maybe there was a hope for them. If wasn’t that Kate couldn’t be with someone whose diet was still that of the majority of their kind, it would just make things more difficult for a relationship. A relationship; Kate could barely fathom the concept of a relationship with Garrett after meeting only a few days before. Yet should couldn’t deny the strong desire she had to be near him, and the strong connect she felt building.
As night drew in ever closer Kate waited on the very edge of the forest for Garrett as arranged earlier that day. It didn’t surprise her at all that the nomad had taken an interest in her family’s diet; a lot of their kind was curious but wary of going again their nature. Kate would often beg to differ that diet was nurture over nature; why should they be condemned to stereotype when other option were available? From the first time they had spoken privately, when Kate had sort him out, he had expressed an interest in her diet and its effect on her eyes. Kate could still picture Garrett’s eyes, deep red eyes that she found both fascinating and compelling while still a little weary.
The evening they had spent talking played over in Kate’s head as she waited for him to meet her to hunt. Kate had mentioned that she would need to hunt soon and had openly invited him to accompany her. It surprised her a little that he accepted, but Kate had a feeling he could often surprise her if they spent time together which Kate would like. So, not with a feeling akin to nervousness Kate waited in anticipation of spending time alone with him, again. The night had taken over the day and the sky was moonless, if they kept down wind and moved stealthily as their kind did then hunting tonight should be easy and enjoyable. Kate only hoped that Garrett wouldn’t find is vulgar and disgusting, she knew that she had thought it so when the concept was first shown to her; an open mind was a must for this hunt.
Staring out into the dense forest Kate concentrated on the noises around her coming accustomed to them to aid in hearing her pray later. With her back to the house were the other witnesses to this gathering were Kate fought to control the ever present burning in her throat that was greater now with her need to hunt, just as her eyes were dark and dull; soon they would be golden to match her families once more.

Garrett could feel a sense of adventure as he headed towards the edge of the forest to meet Kate. He had asked her to show him how to hunt in the vegetarian way. It was something that had completely piqued his interest and he was more than curious to see what it would actually be like to experience it. He wasn’t sure he was ready to make any lifestyle decisions yet, but he was interested enough just to see what it was like. It was something that had worked extremely well for two covens, as he had witnessed upon arriving in Forks. Both the Cullens and Denali’s were surviving very nicely this way. He wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
Trying out the vegetarian diet was also about challenging himself. Maybe he’d attempt to stay vegetarian as they called it for the rest of his trip here. He laughed at the idea. He didn’t even know how long they’d be here, and the thought of not drinking that which had sustained him for years seemed a difficult task at hand. But it was the difficulty of such a challenge that made him more interested in it. Besides the draw of a challenge there was the even stronger draw of the women who was introducing this lifestyle to him. Kate Denali. She had made a great impression on him, and he was quite taken by her. He had never sought out a mate, or desired anything more than the occasional fling as he traveled from place to place. But the way he was feeling about her was something deeper. He didn’t want to stop seeing her once this was done, if they even walked away from the encounter with the Volturi.
Garrett picked up Kate’s scent and as he looked ahead spotted her standing eyes closed amongst the trees. He sped up his pace and reached her in moments. “Nice to see you again Kate...Ready to show me what all this is fuss is about?” he asked her with a smile.

Knowing the sounds of the forest Kate instantly picked out the foot steps closing in on her by the tree line. Opening her eyes they instantly sought out the noise and focused, effortlessly, on Garrett even before he spoke he had her whole attention and she smiled at the sight of him. He was barefoot, a sight Kate was used to by now. His jeans we low slung, worn and well fitting over his prominent hip bones. His torso was barely covered by his open shirt that moved in the breeze and opened with his fast movements that bough him to her side.
“Hello Garrett.” Kate smiled and stepped towards him. “Fuss? I’d think finding a human would be more fuss then hunting like we do.” She said honestly. When she still fed on humans it was easier to sneak away a meal from a crowd, now with everything watched, it was harder she presumed.
An open mind, Kate remember, was key to the transition. Even if Garrett wasn’t going to completely change to this way of life he would still need an open mind to experience it. “Are you ready to have an open mind about this whole thing?” Kate asked cocking her head to one side and trying to look him in the eye but her eyes kept wandering to his chest. Garrett wasn’t the first male she’d seen in this sates if undress, but he was the to catch and hold her attention the way he did when ever he was near her. “When I first tried this kind of hunting, it wasn’t the most appealing. It more a matter of seeing the bigger picture and the rewards. And its something you do get used too.”

"Finding a human isn't that difficult, in case you've been in seclusion too long the world is overpopulated with them, in fact its harder to avoid them then find them, and they're always acting reckless enough to be caught" Garrett said, not in a mocking tone but just attempting a bit of good natured teasing.
As he looked at her now that he had come to a stop beside her, he marvelled again at both the beauty and the alluring color of her eyes. It was now a darker almost black color as she was hungry but he could see the hint of gold to it and knew they were different than his own. He wondered if after one hunt if he'd gain the new color or if it took years of a switch in diet. That was something he wasnt sure he wanted and hadn't really considered yet, just trying it out today. Fascinated by the alternative he'd never before considered.
Garrett nodded as she asked if he'd have an open mind. "I'll be open to whatever you want to show me, to experience what you do" He told her knowing if the Denali's and Cullens could both exist like this, it must be doable. Certainly not a challenge he'd pass up. He nodded as she said how it wasnt that appealing when she first tried it. "So be honest, how bad is it going to taste? Is faster better on this one?"

His humor made her smile and Kate laughed lightly. “Perhaps if you spent a little time in Alaska you’d understand. We can go for days, weeks even, without seeing a single person. Though the wildlife is plentiful all year round.” she told him still smiling not trying to belittle or talk down to him. “Another positive reason for change; better food supply.” she laughed again realizing both food options would be plentiful in different places.
Kate looked to him as they rested side by side. His eyes blazed in the fading light. The color was frightening and alluring, since first meeting him Kate found it difficult not to look into his eyes when ever they occupied the same place. She knew her eyes had dulled to a darker less shining golden hue and she wondered if he could see it. After a single hunt Kate doubted his would change, though it had been so long since hers had shone red she knew if human blood crossed her lips the change would be slight but noticeable. A thought she detested.
An open mind was key, not been open to it would make it harder. Kate hoped Garrett would keep to his word, but she had faith he had just by him joining her to hunt. Hunting was something she did with her sisters, but tonight she was glad to be alone with him; glad of any time alone with Garrett. “I’ll try to go easy on you. Animals aren’t as easy to lure as Humans, it takes more then good looks and a good smile.” She teased giving him a taste of his own humor.
The taste was something she didn’t notice as bad now, of course it lacked the elixir and fire that came with Human blood, but it was not bad. Her first taste had been unpleasant, but Kate was sure if she hadn’t been so hungry perhaps her first taste of human blood would have tasted bad too. “Its not bad, merely different. Each animal has a unique taste, it a matter of finding your preference.” She nodded knowing ah home she would prefer Elk freshest in the summer, here Deer or a Mountain lion would suffice. “Speed depends on your hunger and thirst. When did you last feed?” Kate asked turning to face him and unsure if she really wanted to hear the answer.

Garrett enjoyed seeing Kate smile and hearing her laugh. He would put forth any effort needed to get those two things repeated throughout the evening. He loved being the cause of her happiness, even for just a moment. Perhaps he had been on his own so long that it was just the mere ability to be able to affect another of his kind emotionally that appealed to him, but he was really thinking that there was more to it than that. "Try getting out of your winter wonderland sometime and you'll see the world is filled with humans passing through, exploring even what was once secluded areas of pure nature and wildnerness left to animals and other creatures...now they have no boundaries. " He then raised his eyebrow with a smirk "Perhaps I will need to spend some time in Alaska to see your point there"
Garrett laughed openly at her comment on animals needing more than a smile and good looks to lure them in. "Perhaps I should have stopped at an animal food store , leave them a trail of crumbs" He joked, pretty sure that wasn't actually how it was done. "With animals I would guess it comes down to more of the chase? They have better natural instincts than humans on what predators to avoid" He guessed but deferred to her for confirmation.
The taste was something he was a little concerned about. Human blood, was so completely satisfying that he couldn't imagine how anything else could compare. He hoped he wouldn't just embarrass himself by not being able to choke down the foreign liquid. But if her family survived on it, it must be manageable. Garrett bit his tongue to keep from asking her which animal tasted the closest to human. He knew she had a distaste for it and hoped his nature didn't just turn her off completely. He could see her hesitation in asking when he fed last, but wanted to be honest with her. "Its been awhile, since before I was contacted by the Cullens...maybe anything will taste good now..what do you recommend?"
