{Post-BD}
For around the four hundredth time that morning, Matt picked up the handset of the telephone in the house that she had been sharing with Laurie since their marriage, and for the four hundredth time that day she put the receiver back down. It had only been six hours since she had found out the wonderful news, since the test had come back positive, but Laurie had been on the graveyard shift and wasn’t due back for another hour or so. She was trying so hard to be a good girl, to not interrupt him at work without it being an emergency and also not to pick up the phone so she could squeal down it to her brother until Laurie got home – she knew that the father should hear the news first.
“Fifty-five-ish minutes, come on, time,” she glared up at the clock almost bouncing with excitement, which was really not one of her usual characteristics. She then abruptly picked herself up and moved over to the dining room table, away from the telecommunicative temptation. Her dark eyes immediately found the clock again, and even though she knew perfectly well that it would make time move slower, she remained in that spot, her eyes watching the hand turn around the dial for the next fifty minutes. She sort of forget that she was supposed to be preparing lunch in that time, seen as she’d skipped breakfast and the baby growing in her stomach wasn’t yet developed enough to put extra demands on her system in order to remind her.
Finally, as the clock shifted its hands closer to two o’clock, Matt’s impatience won out and although she knew that she was now too late to catch him at work, she could wait by the door for him to arrive home. So she shifted herself from the dining room to the front door, opening it a few inches so that she could peer outside and not be soaked by the driving rain that the wind was blowing towards their door. There she leaned, her eyes desperately scanning the dim horizon for the familiar and much loved approach of his car.

Laurie bent his head over to the side as he drove home trying to stretch out a crick that had formed in his neck. It had been a long shift. Long and tiring. He was looking forward to getting home to his wife and having a relaxing evening before bed. His shift had been more tiring than usual, there was a lot of extra paperwork and a couple patient’s without insurance who Laurie had to try to push through the system and pull some strings for. It had worked out but was exhausting. He didn’t know how Matt was able to put up with it sometime. His long hours and then when he did come home how tired he usually was. She was the perfect wife though. She understood his work.
As he sat at one of the traffic signal’s a few block’s away from the house they had bought after getting married, Laurie looked over seeing a few of the teenagers in the area going into one of the local diners. They seemed so care free. Laurie wondered if Matt’s high school years had ever been that enjoyable. Laurence clicked on his windshield wipers to a higher speed as the rain seemed to pour down even harder.
A few minutes later Laurie pulled into his driveway. As he looked towards the door he saw it open a crack with Matt peering out from behind it. He frowned slightly as he got out of his car, hoping that everything was alright. Should he have left work early? Was their a problem that had occurred while he was gone. His mind immediately went to the worst case scenarios as he headed towards the front door.

At long last! Matt’s smile grew ten fold, as she watched her Laurie pull into the drive way and she curled her fingers around the door handle to hold herself back from accidentally throwing herself in front of the car in her state of overexcitement. However, as he parked up and began to emerge from the car, she threw caution to the wind and jogged out into the driving rain. It was only a few steps before she could throw herself on the poor man, who she realised would probably be bewildered by her uncharacteristic behaviour, but she couldn’t stop herself. It had been hours of keeping the news to herself and she felt like she just about going to burst. She threw her arms wide around him and pulled him close, despite the chilly rain that was fast saturating the both of them.
“Laurie!” she exclaimed, still unable to shift the Cheshire Cat styled grin. “I missed you today,” she began, honestly, still itching to blurt out the news – despite their four years together, he still retained the ability to make her babble. Instead, she gave him another squeeze and then released him, grabbing his hand to lead him back into the house. It was very strange behaviour for her.
“I have news!” she exclaimed before they had even reached the door, unable to contain it any longer. She span on her heel, directly her sparkling deep brown eyes up into Laurie’s own. “Laurie, I’m pregnant!” She held her breath now, standing perfectly still – even the wind didn’t have enough energy to move the sodden strands of her hair. They had discussed having kids a few months ago, and since that point it had become Matt’s chiefest aim; she only hoped that her husband was as eager as she.

As Laurie opened up his car door to get out, worried that their was something wrong that was the reason Matt was waiting for him at the door, he saw her face turn into a smile. She wouldn’t be smiling if something bad had happened so he smiled back, thinking it was a nice surprise having her waiting for him, and the way to come home. As he closed his door behind him he saw that she was jogging out into the rain to meet him. She either really was happy to see him or did need to tell him something. Maybe she had bought a scratch off lottery ticket and won some money.
Matt threw her arms around him and pulled him into a hug which he gladly reciprocated. “You’re going to get soaked!” He said with a light laugh. “But it’s a great welcome home” he told her, hugging her tightly. He was still as in love with her as the day they got married. She was everything to him. “I missed you too” Laurie told her leaning down and greeting her with a kiss.
Matt had then taken Laurie’s hand and was leading him into the house. It wasn’t his birthday so he wondered what all of this was about but he wasn’t complaining. Laurie gladly followed Matt back inside. Laurie stopped walking as she told him she had news. As she looked up into his eyes and told him that she was pregnant, Laurie’s eyes widened. He wasn’t expecting it, even though they had been hoping to get pregnant.
“You’re…Matt!” Laurie exclaimed his face with a huge smile on it as he went forward and took her into his arms lifting her off the ground in his excited hug. “This is amazing! I can’t believe it! We’re going to have a baby!”

Matt grinned into Laurie’s shoulder, holding him tight in the hug as he got out of his car. She knew that she shouldn’t keep him outside, or waiting in the dark, but she was overcome by happiness. He was probably tired after his long shift and she knew that he worked so hard that he probably wanted nothing more than to get inside the warm, dry house, not stand out here in the rain with his insane wife. She turned her head up to him and met him halfway to receive her kiss, enjoying the sensation of butterflies that assaulted her stomach. She had never lost it, that buzz of love when she was close to him, or when he showed her affection. She was just so happy, she could barely contain herself when she actually consciously thought about how lucky she was. And now she was actually pregnant!
“Sorry, you should get inside…” she said, her voice just louder than the roar of the rain. Her excited expression softened a little as she concerned herself with caring for him. She figured that he spent his whole day caring for strangers, which meant that it was the least she could do to make sure that he was always cared for at home. It wasn’t like she had to consciously remind herself to be caring towards him, though, it came naturally to her. Unable to resist, she bobbed up for one more kiss before leading him back to the house.
As Matt told her husband her big news – the biggest news of her life – she held her breath, suddenly insecure. She hoped that he was as happy as she was about the news, but she suddenly wondered if the full time caring he had to do at work would dampen the prospect of having a baby to care for at home as well. Oh, she knew that her fears were stupid, they had discussed it, but still, her dark eyes swam over his features in an anxious fashion. She didn’t have long to wait though and her face split into a smile that had only been as wide on their wedding day.
“We’re going to have a baby!” she exclaimed, repeating his words and laughing ecstatically as he lifted her from the floor. The butterflies had now spread out from her stomach and she felt as though she was flying. She threw her arms around him again, barely aware that they were still standing just outside their own open front door. “I think I’m going to… to… I don’t know – explode, or fly away, or or… something!”

Laurie gave a light laugh as he watched his wife as she seemed to just realize that they were getting soaked in the rain after she got a kiss from him and a hug. "Its okay, I dont mind standing in the rain for this" He told her. "But you should get in before you get a chill" He said, always protective of her best interests. He knew from the look in her eyes that something was up, it was just a matter of waiting to find out what it was. He gave her one more quick kiss before the two of them headed back inside.
Once she finally told him the news, Laurie was in complete shock and excitement at the same time. He had always wanted a family and to be a father and having that with Matt was truly a dream come true. His smile showed through the pure joy that he felt at the news, already picturing Matt with both a baby bump and then holding onto that little bundle of joy in the hospital.
"A baby" He repeated again grinning as he lifted her off the floor with his hug. He let out a laugh of excitement and then put her down as she said how she was going to explode or fly away. "Lets set you down then before you fly off on me. This is...just so wonderful, I can't believe it. " He then looked at her a moment, he could see the smile but still just had the smallest doubt that she may only have said she wanted this to make him happy. "You're happy about this too right? You want this?"

Matt smiled up at her husband, unable to hold at bay the excited grin. She had been waiting for hours to give him the news, yet it still flattered her that he was prepared to stand outside in the rain with her for just a hug and a kiss – things that could easily be done inside the dry, warm house. Still, his first concern was for her health, even though he could probably tell that she was bursting at the seams to deliver her news.
“Or before you get a chill,” she told him, nevertheless beginning to wander back towards their little house. She sometimes worried that he worked too hard and that it would make him ill, but she also knew that he was sensible and that he would tell her if anything was wrong. Still, that was another good reason for making sure that she took care of her husband once he got home.
She was so overjoyed that Laurie had taken the news so well that she could barely contain herself. His excitement fed hers and there was no mistaking the pure joy in his smile as he came to terms with the situation. She began to nod as he meandered around the prospect of having a baby, but was cut off in the movement as she was lifted off her feet. She laughed delightedly, clinging on to her husband and sliding her arms down his form to hug him as he put her down again.
Once more, Matt was reduced to happy smiles and an inability to focus her thoughts enough to put them into words at the prospect of starting a family. However, she caught the slightly more serious look at he gave her after a few more moments of abject joy and she concentrated more on making sense rather than babbling incomprehensively. She grinned at his question, unable to display any other emotion, and punched his arm lightly as punishment for even thinking that she might not want to child.
“Of course I do!” she declared and continued in a sincere tone. “More than I’ve ever wanted anything…” she trailed off, sliding her dark eyes up to his own blue ones. “Well, maybe the same amount as I wanted you.” She laughed a little and took his hand. “And you, you’re sure this is what you want, right?” She wouldn’t give it up, not even if he hated the idea of having a baby, but she wanted to know if that was the case, if that was why he was asking her.

Laurie smiled as his wife showed her concern for him getting a chill as they stood out in the rain. He may be the doctor in the family, but at home, Matt looked after him as much as he did her. He didnt mind standing in the cold or the rain for her, but did think she'd be better off inside where it was dry, even before he had heard the news.
Laurie felt as though Matt had just given him the best gift possible. She was giving him a child. He loved their family as it was now, but had wanted to let it grow and raise a family with her. Now it was actually coming true and he was overwhelmed with complete joy. The only thing he could think of to do was lift her in the air in an excited hug, but putting her down before she got uncomfortable. He loved her so much, and knew already he loved the child he had just learned of. Seeing her laughing and smiling, she seemed to already be glowing and he was surprised he hadn't been able to see it before she said something. "You're absolutely radiant" He told her, voicing aloud his thoughts though they may have seemed oddly timed.
He did hold a bit of apprehension that this was just for him. That maybe he had pushed her too hard with his aspirations for children that ready for them herself or not, she went ahead with it, just to make him happy. He knew Matt was a selfless enough of a person that it could be possible, so he had to ask, just to be sure. He saw her grin and punch his arm lightly, causing him to laugh lightly as she told him that of course she wanted this.
"Just making sure!" He explained, glad that they were both on board completely for this. He smiled back at her as she told him that she wanted the baby as much as she wanted him, happy that she still did want him too, that marriage hadn't lessened their desire for each other. He smiled as she asked him the same question, whether he was sure it was what he wanted. "Of course!" he repeated her sentiment. "This is exactly what I wanted. Having a child with you is something I want as much as I want you too...which is a heck of a lot"

Even though her excitement at being with child overwhelmed just about anything else that she could possibly feel, a small mask of shyness did assert itself over Matt's features as her husband told her that she was radiant. She knew she couldn't deny it, she felt like she was glowing, especially now that she had the chance to tell Laurie what was going on, that they were going to have a family and start a new path in their lives.
"It's been hard waiting to tell you," she confided in him with a small smile, knowing that her enjoyment had only intensified in the last few minutes. She knew that everything would change now as they became mother and father rather than just wife and husband, but sharing it with him would be just amazing, she knew it instinctively.
"Well there's really no need to worry, whatsoever, at all," she commented, trying to look at him severely after punching him on the arm as he doubted her desire to have children. She failed to look anything less than pleased, though, and she laughed at his defensive exclamation after getting her own reassurance out. Even as she turned his own question back at him just to satisfy the tiniest doubt, she knew in her heart that this was the life that was meant for them. There was no way that either of them could be unhappy at this news - she couldn't imagine anyone begrudging being pregnant or their pregnant wife when they were as happy and in love as the Chambers' were.
"You sure you're still going to want me when I'm all fat and gross?" she asked, a small smile playing on her lips to show that she wasn't being too serious as she freed her hand from his and twined her arms around his back, always wanting to be closer to the man that she loved.

They were having a child. It was the news that Laurie had dreamed of hearing since he first started imagining their future together. Now it was finally here and they were both happy and could enjoy the moment. Their family was growing. While he was happy with just the two of them, both of them were the parental types, it made sense that they'd have children. He hoped this wouldn't be the only one.
"I'm sorry that you did have to wait" Laurie said, wishing for a moment that he could have been with her the moment she found out for herself, so that they could have learned the news together and she wouldn't have had to keep this information bottled up until he got home. "If I had known this was waiting for me at home I would have left early" He said with a light laugh.
Laurie smiled again as she reassured him that he had no need to worry that this was something she wanted as much as him. She really was the perfect woman for him. He then shook his head as she asked if he would want her when she was fat and gross. "You my angel will never be gross, and it is my intention to fatten you up to sustain the two of you! You will look beautiful no matter what...you're carrying my baby" He said smiling again and feeling the tears of joy creeping up again.
