{7 months after Best Laid Plans}
Matt sucked in a deep breath, making it hiss quietly between her teeth as she lay in bed next to her husband. She tried to be as quiet as she could, knowing that Laurie had been working a lot recently and that he needed his rest when he could get it, especially as he wasn’t even on call that night. She turned her head to the side, her dark eyes catching on to the slight shine of his blonde hair from the little light that came through the bedroom window. Past him she caught sight of the alarm clock and noticed the time, three thirty in the morning. She attempted to pass her hands through her sweat matted hair and frowned as she felt her abdomen cramp up again.
She had been pregnant for six months, three weeks and six days, if she didn’t count the next day as having start yet, then it was technically seven months. The first few months had been great, there had been a bit of sickness, bloating, cravings, mood swings, the usual, but she hadn’t suffered any of them badly. Plus, the sheer joy that she had experienced from just being pregnant, knowing that she was going to bear Laurie a set of twins, like herself and Leo, had diminished anything unpleasant she had experienced in her mind. However, the past week or so things had begun to change. She had felt quite uncomfortable, unable to sleep, but nothing like tonight. She didn’t like to complain to her husband, though she knew that he wouldn’t be annoyed if she complained over nothing, she just didn’t want to add to his workload.
She sat up, trying to be as gentle as she could, but with a stomach like hers at the moment, it was pretty difficult. She cringed a little as the bed creaked with her shift of weight, but the guilt over disturbing her husband’s sleep was soon forgotten as another contraction wracked her abdomen. She gasped, still trying to be considerate and quiet as she reached down and gripped the covers as hard as she could to alleviate some of the tension from the pain. A minute or so later she withdrew her fingernails from the sheets and raked her hair once more, wishing her back would let up along with the stomach pain so that she could process some of the fear that was catching in her chest.
“Laurie…” she said after a few more minutes of perching uncomfortably at the edge of the bed. She crossed one of her arms over her stomach, protectively, knowing there was still two months to go. She turned her sweat strained face over her shoulder to see if she had managed to stir her beloved husband. “Laurie, I don’t feel too good…” She blinked away frightened tears, hoping that this was a nightmare and that she would wake up in a few minutes, happily pregnant and on her way to delivering her babies full term.
