Angela could hear the pain in Bella's voice even though she could see that she was trying to hide it. There was only one thing that Angela could think of that could upset her this much. Edward. Elaine must have mentioned him to Bella. Angela had done her best over the past few months to try to steer away from mentioning Edward or any of the other Cullen's names to Bella. She had let her know early on that if she ever wanted to talk about it, Angela would be there, but if not, she wasn't going to make her feel worse by trying to force her to.
Angela looked over to Elaine wondering what had set her off today to make her so angry. She listened as Elaine started talking about not having friends here and only pretending to be friends with people. Her words hurt Angela. Did she really just pretend to be friends with her? They had spent time together, gone shopping, gone to church together...Elaine had even had Angela's family over for dinner. Was all of that faked? "Elaine..." Angela said softly, trying to believe their friendship was real. "Its not true that no one here likes you because I like you...and I thought we were friends"

Elaine looked at her. She knew what she said had hurt her. She looked back at her feet. "Yes I know your my friend that not what I meant. It just I have been going trough a hard time and I was mad. Bella had so many friends before this whole thing happened and now she was abandon them all because of Edward. I did not want her to do that." She sat on the floor with her hands at her head.
"Ya what to know Angela I did not tell you the whole story. I did not move here on my own. I was kicked out. My mom could not handle me so she sent me here to live with my dad. I did not think I could tell you because I don't even want to admit that it was my fault. I am useless my own mom can't stand me."

"I know its been hard for you" Angela told Elaine sympathetically. She was friends with both of the girls and hated that despite their similar situations that they couldn't get along. "Bella's been going through a hard time of her own" She said trying to help Elaine understand.
Angela moved closer to Elaine as she saw her sit on the floor. She listened to how Elaine had been kicked out of her old home and sent to live here. Angela bent down beside Elaine, gently rubbing her back. "You are not useless, and you don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to" She said not wanting to pry further. If Elaine wanted to open up she would do so on her own.

Elaine looked up at Angela. Her eyes were the worst they had been every it was really as if someone had taken her soul out and hid it away. She was letting the same person out the one that her mother kicked her out for. "It is fine. She might have the same problem but she is starting to become like me and I can not let that. I will make her hate me before I let her do that." Elaine's voice was cold and monotone. She did not even seem to move. Her eyes darted to Bella as if trying to tell her to stop it. To beg her to understand that this was what she was going to become if she stayed this way.
"No I won't tell you anything else. I mean I don't want you feeling sorry for me. My dad said I could live with him because he did not want them to put me in a crazy house. That was where I was to be sent not here. My dad the only one that loves me he begged and pleaded with the people where I work to give me a job. He said that it would help me out. Look at me has it helped me out." Elaine looked at her. She looked as if she was dead.

Bella stood detached from reality a few feet away from the reflection of her own personal pain. She watched with a morbid fascination as Elaine broke down, her defences caving as she told Angela more about her situation. Bella couldn’t help but think back to her argument with Charlie, how close she was to being sent to Jacksonville. Ugh, who would want to be sent to Florida? She didn’t think she would be able to fake her happiness as well to Renée as she could to Charlie, and it didn’t seem to be working very well on him anyway.
She watched as Angela crouched by her friend, rubbing her back in a reassuring manner and she remembered the comfort she had gained from Jacob’s presence the other day. And Jacob would be the one that would bring Edward back to her, even if it was just a velvet voice in her head. She had nothing for her here at Forks High School, but she didn’t want news of her withdrawn nature to reach Charlie - that would only had fat to the fire. A deep breath scorched down her throat and got lost in the black hole as she realised that this was another aspect of life that she seemed to be failing at. It wasn’t that she intended to drive her human friends away, which she gathered she had by the general direction of Elaine’s tirade, it had just sort of happened like that. It took all her energy to keep herself functioning at this emergency reserve level, it took more than everything she had, moving on hadn’t even presented itself as an option and she doubted it ever would.
She blinked, still frozen to the spot, a haggard statue looking over the other two girls little talk. She felt like she could just stand there and decay, not an endless, perfect marble statue, but a rotting mass poisoning all it touched. She hadn’t meant to upset anyone else, that had been the direct opposite point of her façade, and now that her dull brain was registering Elaine’s sadness a white hot lasso of guilt was beginning to wrap around that black hole. It was not a good combination.
She wants me to hate her? she questioned in her head, confused, the words filtering through at a snail’s pace and not making much sense. I don’t have enough room left to hate.
No, she wasn’t going to risk a strong emotion like that again, on anyone. Wasn’t hate supposed to be as strong as love? Wasn’t love supposed to be the happy one? No, she wasn’t going to risk hate, not now she had seen what damage love could do. She still couldn’t move, but she raised her voice from where she was.
“I won’t hate you, Elaine,” Bella told her, allowing her eyes to wander over to the empty bit of wall where a clock used to lie. She hadn’t noticed it had been moved. “I should get to class.”

Elaine looked at both of them and then stood up. She was not going to class. "Ya right like I believe you. I mean you don't even know me. So how can you not hate me." She held her bag tightly to her body. She was not sure that she would be able to handle school. *So now what I want to do. I am skipping class oh once dad finds out I might be in trouble but doubt it.*
Elaine then started to walk toward the exit. She was going to do something that was not suppose to be done but she was not sure what. All she knew was that Bella did not want be her friend and it did not matter to her. "Well Angela I will see you later. I don't feel like being here so skipping sounds good. If you want to go with me either of you." She then looked at then started to walk away. She wanted someone to talk to that she could tell the whole story to she still had pictures and knew something was up.

As Mike walked down the hallway of Forks High to his next class he stopped to say a few words to a couple of people. Mike Newton was quite popular at this school and had gained quite a few friends.
As his blue eyes roved the hallway looking for someone else to talk to he noticed a group of his girl friends by the lockers. He noticed all of them; Bella Swan, Angela Weber, and Elaine Rhodes. He hadn't formed much of a friendship with Elaine, yet, but he had been friends with Bella and Angela for a while now. By the looks of things, and the way Elaine was stalking off away from them, it looked like something had gone wrong.
Curious, he let his feet carry him toward them, despite the fact that class would be starting soon. As he passed Elaine he noticed she was crying. He looked at her with concerned eyes, but let her walk past him. He was sure she didn't want to talk to him about any of her problems. Mike continued his walk to Angela and Bella. His face full of concern.
"What happened?" he asked the girls, his eyes focused mostly on Angela. As he turned his stare to Bella he stopped his intake of breath for a short moment. He could see she was really upset.
She had started to look so much better the last week or so, and now she looked bad. Real bad. The simple fact that Bella was upset infuriated Mike. He shot an angered glare at Elaine's back, making an assumption that she had caused Bella pain.
As he turned back to the girls he reached his right hand out to touch Bella's arm. "Hey, are you alright? What'd she do?" he asked, his eyes turning back toward Elaine.

Despite her best intentions, Bella had failed to move towards her next class, half admiring Elaine’s audacity to miss class - there was only one other person she had known that had done that at regular intervals. At the heart of it, though, Bella was still too cowardly to actively skip any class, plus the news would no doubt reach Charlie. She considered that maybe hearing that his zombie daughter had skipped class would please him, after all he had told her that she was trying too hard. Then again, it would be much harder to skip class than not… Her brow pulled together into a little frown, her eyes still on the invisible clock on the wall, trying to figure it out. She didn’t even notice Mike’s approach and so was startled slightly as his blue eyes suddenly turned to her.
“Just a disagreement,” she told him in a dull voice, the same reason she had given Angela a few minutes ago. Internally she was cursing Mike’s appearance. It wasn’t fair of her really, but she couldn’t bear to be seen to be on the brink of destruction in front of so many, and if Mike told Jess… Angela Bella knew she could be trusted to be discreet and understanding. If it got back to Jessica how much of a mess Elaine had made of Bella, well that would be around the school like wildfire, given Jess’ current coolness with her. She could just imagine the route the gossip would take: Jess would notice something in Mike’s expression and would prod him about it until he told her the gossip, the news would go around the lunch table and once it reached Lauren it would all be over.
She sighed, her arm tensing under Mike’s unexpected touch - it had been a long time since someone had done that, as far as she could remember. No, she couldn’t allow this to get out of control, it was just a matter of putting the mask back up, even if it wasn’t a very good one. Just think of Jacob, she told herself, remembering his sunny disposition, the way he made her feel for those few hours the other day. Eventually, a little too late to be completely natural, she looked up at Mike with a set smile on her face, straining the corners of her mouth.
“I’m alright, Mike, really,” she took a deep breath, realising that she would have to give them something to appease their concern. She attempted a bashful look. “She just took me by surprise, that’s all."

Just a disagreement? he thought to himself. Mike didn't prod further, he could see that Bella was already crumbling before them. Any more questions would probably make her breakdown right here in the hallway. He let his hand fall from her arm as she smiled up at him. It wasn't much of a smile though.
He half smiled back at her before turning to glance around the hall. Surely he was late to his next class. "Alright, Bella," he told her, not convinced she was alright. But this was Bella and she would do anything to keep the spotlight off her.
"We should probably get to class," he said to the both of the girls as he turned in the direction of his next class. He took a few steps before turning back to Bella and Ang. "See you at lunch," he muttered before continuing to class.

Jessica walked quickly into school, late. She had overslept from being on the phone too late the night before. As she walked into school she noticed Bella, Angela and Elaine standing but what she noticed more was that Mike Newton was walking away from them towards class.
She caught up to him and gave him a smile and saying, "Hey Mike."

Bella frowned a little, internally, as she watched Mike walk off. She knew that she was fooling no one, but now she was frozen, she couldn’t remove the fixed smile from her face, she couldn’t call him back and apologise. She nodded a little at his assessment that they should get to class, but it was too late, he had already turned his back to them. Worst of all, it was only a moment later that Jessica tottered past them to approach Mike and it caused Bella’s expression to fall.
Oh well, she conceded to herself, realising that her brink of breakdown would probably be around the school before the day was out. At least I’m not in the limelight anymore, it’ll blow over soon. So long as Charlie doesn’t hear about it…
She bit her lip, resolving to work on getting better again, or at least on persuading everyone that she was ’getting better’. She turned to Angela and shook her head a little. “I’m sorry, Angela,” she told her, meaning it. “Could you tell the others too?”

Angela watched as Elaine headed in one direction and soon after Mike and Jessica were in another. She knew it was probably the best thing for Bella that Mike and Jessica had gone off to talk to each other. Although she knew Mike had good intentions, she also knew that if she were in Bella's place, she wouldn't want anyone else to be involved in this than already was. She wouldn't want to be unloading her troubles on Mike.
"It's okay Bella, you have nothing to be sorry for" Angela told her, hoping the other girl would believe her. "Do you want to talk?" She offered, hoping her friend would reach out to her. She knew that Elaine's comments had to hurt, and stir up feelings that she'd rather not think about, but Angela was worried about what would happen to Bella if she kept pushing down those thoughts. "You know I'm still here for you, right?" She asked, hoping that Bella knew she hadn't given up on her, even if Bella had been withdrawn lately. She would never give up on her.

Mike walked at a fast pace to his class, though it was a lost cause; he was already late. But before he could make it to his class, another student greeted him. Jessica Stanley, his ex-girlfriend. And the biggest gossip of Forks High. He turned to face her, still walking, with a shocked expression. Last he heard they weren't really on talking terms.
"Uh, hey Jess," he muttered. "What do you need?" he asked. He was sure that was the only reason she had stopped to talk to him. He turned his head back toward Bella and Angela; he was sure Jessica was trying to get information on what had just happened. But Mike didn't truly know himself.

Jessica stopped and smiled. "Who says I need anything?" she said trying to be sweet. She had held a grudge against Mike for too long it seemed even if it really wasn't. The least she could do is be nice to him and say hello. Plus he always helped her with math so she had to keep him around at least as a somewhat friend.
"I just wanted to say hello that's all. It's a shame we don't talk much anymore! After what happened.." she said but rushed over the sentence and didn't finish it. "Just wanted to see how you were doing?"

Mike shrugged his shoulders and fought the urge to retort back to her with a smart comment of his own. He thought better of it though. No need in risking his well being. He didn't necessarily not like Jessica, he just found that usually all she really wanted to know was the new gossip. And since he hadn't talked to her in a while, besides with help in her classes, it's what he figured she wanted.
"Hi," he muttered simply to her, "Too bad." Mike wasn't even sure what had happened really. He wasn't even sure she knew what had happened. Just a falling out it seemed. "I'm doing alright, just running late. Yourself?"
