"Oh.." she said trying to think of more to say but she knew he sounded like he didn't really want to talk. Not like she cared, there were plenty of other guys that she could have. She did not care about Mike Newton anymore one bit. Well..maybe a little.
"Oh yeah I just came in late to school so I'm running late too. I noticed Bella Angela and Elaine talking like something was up," she said. "Any idea? I would try to ask myself but you know me and Bella don't really hang out as much anymore.." she said.

Bella bit her lips, silently looking at Angela for a few moments as she considered how to let the other girl down. If only she could persuade them all that she was okay, then things could get on as normal. The only thing was that the more she tried to persuade them that everything was fine, the less they seemed to believe it. Who would have known that these people that she had called friends would know her beyond the flimsy surface? Then again, it wasn’t as if she was doing a very good impression of the old ‘Bella Swan’ for them to be fooled by. It had been better these last few days, and she had actually been feeling better, but clearly it was a temporary fix. Her eyes transferred from Angela’s face to Jessica’s retreating back. She felt a little guilty about acting so strange in Port Angeles, but that’s what she needed. That’s what she needed to do to act and seem normal. Crazy. She shook herself a little and gave Angela an apologetic look, placing a tiny smile on her face.
“I know,” she replied, her voice sounding quite husky. “I know you are, and that is great…” she paused to take a deep breath. “And if I do want to talk… I will think of you.” Her brow furrowed as she spoke, betraying real emotion behind the dull façade, an expression that pleaded with Angela to be patient, but she had no idea how long it would be before she would be a proper friend again. She had practiced pushing these bad experiences down into the core of her being for so long, why wasn’t it working now?

Mike paused in front of his classroom to finish his quick conversation with Jessica.
"Oh yeah," he muttered in response to her being late comment. At least she had a logical excuse to being late. Mike was just late because he was too social. Not something that would settle well with his teacher. He would have to come up with a quick lie before entering the class. He pondered his options as he listened to Jessica.
"I have no idea," he told her. "Seriously," he added, "Well I better get to class. Talk to you later." He stood there waiting to see if she had anymore to say before he walked into class late, he didn't want to be rude and just leave her in the hall.

Jessica was sort of hurt that Mike had so abruptly told her he had to leave. Apparantly he wasn't over whatever it was that seperated them in the first place.
"Oh.." she said and they stood awkwardly for a second. "Before you go, do you think you could give me some help with my math homework sometime? I mean doesn't matter when, I'm just sorta falling behind you know," she said and smiled the signature Jessica smile, hoping he wouldn't object. The truth was she wasn't really that behind in math, but she just wanted to have an excuse to talk to him in a place where they wouldn't be ruled by the few minutes inbetween classes.

"Uhm, yeah sure," he mumbled. He shouldn't have been surprised by Jessica's sudden actions of talking to him. She'd always been like that; not talking to you one minute and then talking non-stop to you the next.
He shrugged his shoulders and gave a slight smile in return to hers. "I guess we can talk more about it at lunch," he said putting his hand on the door handle. He opened the door and took a step in, but before letting the door close he turned to say goodbye. "See ya around," he smiled and let the door shut.

Jessica smiled and was happy that Mike had at least said yes, though he didn't seem too enthusiastic. She really didn't know why. "Okay cool we'll talk later!" she said happily but he walked into his classroom.
She stood for a second and realized she was probably really late now. Not like it really mattered anyway. She trotted off to class by herself, it was odd that she was by herself. She wasn't really used to it.

Angela saw Bella pause a moment and wondered if she was finally ready to let someone in to help her, or if Angela had just pushed her too far this time and had made things worse. After what she had just heard from Elaine, Angela was definitely hoping it wasn't the latter. But then just moments before Bella even opened her mouth to speak, Angela could see from the look on her face that she didn't want to talk. She wasn't ready for that. But Angela was okay with that.
Angela gave Bella a small smile, letting her know she understood. "That's okay, you don't have to say anything" She told her reassuringly. "If you ever want to, great, if not, that's fine too, its none of my business really...I just want you to be okay"

Bella’s expression softened to the furthest extent it could these days as she attempted to convey to Angela that she was truly grateful for her unquestioning loyalty. Her eyes, which had been dull and lifeless for the longest time, shifted. A mist unveiled a chaotic turmoil of emotion, impossible to control despite her best efforts to channel it into something encouraging and productive for her friend. It was back over in a split second though, all those scary emotions bottled themselves back up and dug themselves into the back of Bella’s psyche once more.
“Thank you, Angela,” she said, crushing the file beneath her fingers. She glanced around and noticed that the corridors had emptied since the confrontation, which could only mean that they were late for class. “I’d better be getting to english,” she commented, her lips twisting in regret. She didn’t like being called out for tardiness. “Sorry I made us late.”

Angela gave Bella a compassionate smile. Even though Angela was the type of student to never get in trouble, and surely never skip class she didn't mind at all being late when she knew that her friend needed her. Bella had been through so much lately, even though Angela knew there was more to what happened than she knew, she knew enough to know that Bella was having a hard time dealing with everything, and Angela would be there to help whenever she could.
"Don't worry about it, the teacher will probably be so convinced that Angela Weber could never be late to class that he'll insist the clocks are off" She said with a joking smile, though she knew having the good reputation she did had its perks from time to time.

Bella found a laugh managed to somehow escape her chest, against the odds. She had always liked Angela, and, to be honest, she knew that she had neglected her rather badly both in this dismal phase of her life and in the happiest time she knew. Back then she only had eyes for one single being in the whole of creation. It was an insular world, but it was a perfect one.
“Mind if I sneak in with you then?” she asked, for some reason sounding quite timid with the realisation of her neglect. She felt helpless towards it, though. It wasn’t that she wanted to actively keep them out, she just lacked energy and the connectivity.

Angela gave a smile as she saw Bella laughing. She couldn't remember the last time that she had heard that laugh, and it felt nice that she was able to give her even that moment of relief from whatever darkness she was normally dealing with. Angela felt like she was making progress as a friend. She wished that the others hadn't been so quick to give up on Bella and write her off as a lost cause.
"Of course not! I don't mind at all! Besides, having two of us coming in late will just give more evidence that we can't really be late at all" Angela told her. "Or if that doesn't work, I'll distract the teacher, you run in behind me before he notices."

Bella’s lips curled into a smile, slightly watery, but almost genuine, as Angela’s suggestion. She could tell that the girl was really trying with her and it surprised her that she hadn’t joined the others in their apathy towards her since Edward’s disappearance. She felt bad about how much she had taken the gentle girl for granted these past weeks, months, however long it had been - time didn’t matter to Bella anymore - she knew that Angela deserved a better friend.
“Wow, is it me or is this turning into the Great Escape, or something?” she quipped, poorly, her fingers gripping at her top as the wrapped around her chest. In reality, she doubted that anyone would really care, teachers included. She wasn’t being difficult, she was being a model student, emphasis on the model - she was like a manikin - teachers wouldn’t know what to do with her in detention.
