Amber shut off the engine of her delapidated pickup and leaned over the wheel, resting her forehead on it as she forced her heart rate to slow down to a more acceptable level. She'd gone through this 7 times before, this time probably wouldn'tbe any different.
Somehow, though, she always felt nervous on her first day at a new school, despite being a seasoned veteran. It wasn't that she was afraid of being 'the new kid', more that she was afraid of being the local football, as always seemed to happen. Every school she'd been to so far had been a nightmare. As soon as the other students found out she was a foster child, they almost invariably turned on her, a situation that usually ended up with her being sent back to Social Services and shipped off to a new home.
Who knows, maybe they won't find out she thought to herself, almost laughing at the prospect. Forks wasn't exactly huge, they'd be bound to find out sooner or later. And then where? she continued to herself, At least this place looks nice. A little wet, but that's fine by me. Who am I kidding? I just want to stay in one place for a change. She sighed and pulled the class timetable out of her pocket and studied it for what seemed like the hundredth time. She had picked it up yesterday, so her foster parents would know what her classes were, and now she had it almost memorized. Maybe if she got to class without making eye contact, noone would notice the black eye. As usual, she had given up on the concealer after the fifth attempt to cover it and had just worn her hair down instead. It was handy having long hair, it made hiding so much easier.
Grabbing her jacket and bag, she slung the latter over her shoulder before picking up the black folder on the passenger seat and climbed out of the truck, fighting with the door as the latch caught slightly, making it stick. Stepping out onto the pavement, she slammed the door shut and turned away only to feel a thud on her back as it swung open again. Growling slightly to herself, a habit she was growing increasingly aware of since her last social worker had called her the 'little cat with a big attitude', she turned and grabbed the handle again, this time slamming it with all her strength and smiling grimly as it caught.
Well, if they didn't notice that, they can't be very observant. It's not everyday someone flunks Car Door Closing 101. Crossing her arms over her chest, holding the folder tight to her, she made her way onto the yard beside the school, eyeing the crowd out of the corner of her eye, praying they wouldn't notice her.

Jessica walked into school happily from her car and noticed a girl that she had never seen before. She must be new. She seemed like an alright girl, but something was definately wrong with her. Jess kept playing the idea back and forth in her head whether she should go talk to her or not.
She walked briskly passed her and said happily, "Hello! Are you new here?"

Amber felt someone walk past her and cringed slightly as she heard a voice talking to her. Well, so much for not being noticed she thought, putting on her best friendly smile and raising her head slightly, making sure her hair fell over her eye, hoping it looked stylishly intentional instead of messy.
"Hi! Yeah, I'm new here. Is it that obvious?" she said quietly, not sure whether she'd sounded as abrupt as she thought or whether it was obvious she was nervous. It'd be just her luck to end up seeming stuck-up on the very first day. She hugged her book slightly tighter. Well, what's said is said, no way to un-say it now she thought.

Jessica noted that the girl looked rather nervous to talk to her. The typical new girl most likely. She took a step closer to seem more friendly, hoping the girl wouldn't be afraid or something.
"I don't know, you just seem sort of..out of it or something," she said but tried to cover up her somewhat insult quickly with her next sentence. "Anyway I'm Jessica. I've been around here a while so I know everything about everyone. So you know, if anyone you want to get to know I can dish you anything you want to know," she said shrugging.

"Oh!" Amber replied, somewhat shocked that Jessica was being friendly. Well this is new she thought, relaxing a lightly and raising her head a bit to look at her. She seemed genuine enough. Maybe she really was being nice.
"Sorry, I guess I was. Out of it, I mean. New town, new school, new people. Lotta new, I guess. I'm Amber." She smiled again, not so nervous this time. "Thanks for the offer, I have feeling I'll be needing it! I'm guessing people here know each other pretty well, huh? What with it being a small town and all."

Jess noticed the girl had somewhat relaxed a bit. "Oh yeah, you do something and practicaly the whole town knows about it the next day. Pretty much means you shouldn't do anything or associate yourself with people that'll make people talk about you," she said. She realized she was probably scaring the girl to death.
"Sorry I don't mean to scare you or anything. It's not really THAT bad..but just, like, heads up I guess?" she said.

Amber chuckled slightly. Like she was actually planning on people noticing her, yeah right.
"No worries, the whole in-crowd, out-crowd thing, right? I'll make sure to keep my head down" she said, tucking a few strands of hair behind her right ear, making sure the other side stayed well loose. "I'm not likely to do too much beyond falling flat on my face, that kinda thing. So, anything or anyone I should be careful of?" She said it lightly, as if it was a simple comment, but made sure to take note of what Jessica said. It could make the difference between spending the year here and being out of town next week.

Jessica thought for a moment. She knew exactly what she should warn this girl of. The Cullen's were such an odd family that she didn't want this girl going on with the wrong sort, not like she really cared all TOO much. The Cullen's were just weird. Ever since her attempt to get Edward and his obvious disinterest in her, she decided she didn't like them really at all.
"No," she lied through her teeth. "Well I mean there's this one family that sort of sticks out and blends in the backround at the same time if that makes sense. But it's not that big of a deal. Not like they'd be mean or anything..they just don't..like many people," she finished.

"How come? Are they weird or something?" she asked, casting a brief glance around the yard, wondering if she'd recognise them if she saw them. "I mean, if they don't like people, there's probably not much chance I'll need to worry, but you never know."
"Come to think of it, would I even know them if I saw them?" she laughed, briefly imagining an FBI-like maneuver around school, hiding around corners, ducking out of site whenever one of the apparently infamous family came into sight.

Jessica thought for a moment. She didn't want to tell this girl too much. There were some things better for people to find out about on their owns.
"Well I don't know. I know this sounds weird but they're really beautiful. If that even makes sense. But if you see a bunch of really beautiful people together it's probably them," she said shrugging. "But like I said, nothing to worry about if you don't come in contact with them it won't matter."

Amber thought about what Jessica had said. She'd heard other being being warned about the weird kids in school before, usually because they were nerdy, or 'emo', or even because they were just plain bullies. She'd never heard a warning about beauty before. But, fair enough, if that was the best way to recognise them, that was what she'd watch for.
"I think I know what you mean, or at least I'll probably recognise them if I see them. Thanks for the warning. Guess it's gonna take some getting used to, who's ok and who's not." She looked around her again, wondering if she could see them anywhere.
"What are their names?" she asked, wondering if she was pushing her luck but thinking it might at least be handy to be able to keep an eye out if she heard their names mentioned.

Mike pulled into the school parking lot, he quickly parked his car in the first spot he found. He grabbed his jacket, which sat on the passenger's seat, before getting out. He pulled his arms through his jacket as he made his way toward the school. He didn't carry any books or binders with him, leaving most of them in his locker the day before.
As he walked across the parking lot he noticed out of the corner of his eye Jessica Stanley and another girl. A girl he didn't recognize, she must be new. That was rare for Forks, the last new students they got had to have been the Cullens. Figuring he should introduce himself to the new girl he directed himself toward the two girls.
Just has he approached them he overheard the last words the new girl had said. "Who's Jessica gossiping about now?" he teased with a smile. He held his hand out to the new girl. "Mike Newton," he said waiting for her to shake his hand.

Jessica was about to speak when she whirled around as she heard none other than Mike Newton behind her. Her heart started beating a little faster but she kept her composure.
"Hey Mike!" she said happily. "I am NOT gossiping always gosh..Just alottt I guess." She laughed a little. "I was just warning her about you know..The Cullens."

Amber looked around as a boy approached and introduced himself, taking his hand carefully and shaking it, smiling cheerfully at him as Jessica turned to look at him, seeming a little flustered. This was turning out better than she thought, she'd already met two people and so far they hadn't found out about her past and didn't seem remotely interested. That could only be good news.
"I'm Amber Jefferson. Nice to meet you" she said, somewhat shyly. It was rare enough to make friends, but meeting guys was very new. "Jessica was just telling me about the hierarchy here, giving me a few pointers. It's a little bewildering, but I think I'll get the hang of it eventually."

Mike laughed as Jessica mentioned she didn't gossip all the time. "Okay," he told her sarcastically. Jessica Stanley and her mother were probably the queens of gossip, but that didn't prevent Mike from telling Jessica things or not listening to things she said. He was an accomplice to her gossip.
"Ah, the Cullens," he muttered. He just left it at that, Jessica had probably already done the honors of telling the new girl about them. And if she hadn't, she would be shortly.
"Nice to meet you too," he replied back, releasing the girl's hand from the handshake. "Eh, Forks isn't all that bad. Really isn't much of a hierarchy. We all mostly blend together. A lot of us have grown up together," he told her.
