Bella grinned towards Jessica and Angela, who were fast retreating down the street. She sucked in a long breath, feeling slightly relieved to be left to her own devices - the talk of Tyler's intentions for the end of the year had left her feeling a little sour, which had kind of spoilt the girlie day. She had an hour before she was due to meet the two girls in Bella Italia, and she couldn't think of a better way to escape than to surround herself with books and forget about reality. A small smile appeared on her face as she imagined the pokey little bookshop she would find with stacks of all her old favourites and new ones waiting to be explored.
It didn't take her long to find the shop that Jessica had directed her to, though she came to a stop before entering, assessing it from its facade before she entered.
"Oh no..." she groaned to herself, seeing the dreamcatchers hanging in the windows and hearing the mellow, new age music being played for the benefit of its customers. This wasn't her kind of place at all. Her mouth turned down a little, though her optimism for finding a normal bookshop wasn't entirely squashed.
"There must be a regular shop around here somewhere."
She thought briefly about asking the man in the shop, but didn't want to offend him that she wasn't going to spend her money there. She glanced up at the bright blue sky and shrugged inwardly. It was still warm and sunny, even without her coat and in the thin blue blouse she wore - she would be able to wander around for a while to see what she could find. And so she started walking, picking a random direction and choosing to think of ways she could dissuade Tyler from his guilty pursuit of her.
It was twenty minutes later that she finally took stock of where she was, prompted by a cold chill to the darkening atmosphere. She folded her arms across her chest and cursed herself for not paying attention. She was in an industrial area of Port Angeles full of warehouses and dark shadows - definitely not the home of a cosy little bookshop. It was too early to go back now, though, and probably if she walked through another street or so she would come out into some pedestrian populated area - Port Angeles was not that big. And so she continued on. Her breath caught in her chest soon after, however, as she approached a group of four young men who had been disguised by the lengthening shadows.
"Hey there!" one of them shouted and Bella, jerked her head to look at the source of the voice. It was a purely instinctive reaction - the same as if you heard your name called across a busy room. A shiver ran down her spine as she registered the expression on his intoxicated, yet calculating, face. This wasn't good. She gripped at her small purse, which was securely fastened around her body, ready to surrender it should they prove demanding. She kept her eyes in the middle distance, walking straight past them whilst trying to keep as much space between herself and the little group.
It's going to be fine, it's going to be fine, they're just drunk, you'll be fine, just keep going.
Her thoughts ran at the same excelerated rate as her heart, though she managed to keep her breathing more or less under control. She calmed, however, as she saw their long shadows drop out of sight and their footsteps grow dimmer. She took the respite as an opportunity to take a few deep, comforting breaths and she shivered convulsively - it was getting cold now that the night was drawing closer and her coat was in Jess' car. In fact, it was getting quite late.
So much for the bookshop, she mused. Maybe I should start heading back.
She wheeled around and gasped as she saw two of the quartet that had hassled her before. They were quite a way back, but she really didn't want to pass them again, especially with the growing darkness and the lack of any people whatsoever. It would be okay, she would just keep going down this street - it must lead out somewhere, or at the very least there would be a side street that would lead back out towards the bay. And so she kept going, listening carefully to the footsteps behind her.
She travelled for what seemed like hours and twisted her wrist anxiously to view the time. She should be at the restaurant in ten minutes, she hoped that Angela and Jessica wouldn't be too annoyed at her lateness. Another gasp escaped her lips as she looked up from her list and she tripped to a halt.
"Careful, sugar," a smarmy voice sounded from the next junction, coming closer.
It was the thug that she thought she had lost earlier. Again her heartrate rose exponentially and she held her breath in a vain hope not to display her vulnerability to these predators.
"Stay away from me," she whispered hoarsely. She had intended to sound assertive and no-nonsense, but her throat was too dry. Still, she had a fairly hefty scream she could pull out of the bag... not that there was anyone around to hear it. She could see a street with matchsticks, which she assumed were pedestrians, in the distance, but they would be too far away to hear her. Or she could run... though if she was going to suffer at these men's hands, she would prefer to do so with what little dignity she had left, not tripping over her own alien feet.
A dry, crackling laugh sounded from behind her and she saw the other two men, the realisation striking her that she had been herded.
Okay, so not running, she thought to herself, her heartrate reaching fever pitch. Self-defence - palm to the nose, elbow to the ribs, knee to the groin... Now if I had any hand-eye coordination... Still, if I can injure at least one before...
She swallowed nervously as an other bout of laughter erupted from the monsters around her. She stared at the lead criminal intensely, visualising her unlikely victory over him and trying not to think of anything that came after that.

Edward had followed Bella to Port Angeles that day. He felt so protective of her that he felt he should be nearby, just to keep an eye on her. He knew he couldnt get too close as he'd have no legitimate excuse to give of why he was going to a dress shop, so he kept his distance but had searched the area for Jessica and Angela's voices, checking in on Bella. After a few minutes of watching them talk about dresses and boys, Edward decided it seemed safe enough and gave them some privacy.
Edward sat in his volvo and started thinking about Bella. He smiled as he thought about how disinterested in Tyler she had seemed. Edward had decided to sit with her tomorrow at lunch so they could talk further, he could ask her about her trip to Port Angeles, hear things from her perspective instead of just the other girls. Then he'd see her again for Biology.
After some time had passed Edward decided to check back in with Jessica and Angela. He heard them discussing jewelry and shoes for a moment and then Angela said something that alerted him to the fact that Bella was no longer with them. If she's not with them where did she go?! He thought, suddenly feeling panicked. It had been careless of him not to check more frequently to be sure she stayed, but neither girl had thought anything previously about Bella taking off. They had only discussed dinner plans.
Edward revved up his engine and started driving through the streets, luckily Port Angeles was not a huge city but he had no idea where Bella might be headed. He tried to scan through as many minds as he could, looking for anyone who was talking to Bella, or had spotted her on the streets but he was having little luck. He was starting to panic. Why did she have to go off on her own?
Edward drove in the direction of the restaurant he had heard them discussing. Bella would need to be in walking distance of the restaurant if she was going to meet up with them there later. Didn't she realize how dangerous it was to be out on her own like this? He began getting frustrated by all of the thoughts he heard about everything but Bella. Why had no one seen her? Had she found an abandoned area of the city to hide where there weren't people.
Then suddenly he saw her face. Someone had spotted her! His initial thought was relief until he heard the thoughts surrounding her. There were four men who had managed to get her cornered in a very desolate area of town. No one's going to hear her scream. One of the men had thought. Edward saw the images of what they were planning to do to her flash through his head. He became enraged and sped off. These men deserved the death Edward now wanted to give them. It was a familiar feeling to him, he had spend years hunting men just like these. Killing other types of monsters.
Look at her shaking Edward could hear the voice as he neared. The thought of Bella being scared to the point of shaking made him want to rip their heads off. Surely Bella could forgive his outburst of violent behavior if it meant getting her away from these men? He tried to reason with himself, trying to think of the most painful way that he could kill these men, wanting them to suffer for what they intended to do to Bella.
He turned the corner, seeing Bella and them off in the distance. He sped up his car and pulled it to a halt a few feet from Bella. Edward practically jumped out of the car, moving around front toward the men. His posture was hunched forward, in a predatory manner. "Get in the car!" He yelled over at Bella, staring the men down, daring them to make a move on him, to give him one more reason to tear them to shreds.

Bella could hear nothing other than the hot blood thudding around her body, her heart beating so hard that it threatened to break her ribs. She didn't hear the approach of Edward's car while crazed thoughts of self-defense skittered around her head, so when the shiny Volvo skidded to a halt by her side, she nearly jumped out of her skin. One of the men towards her back laughed out loud, clearly too drunk to realise the consequences of his actions. For a moment, one perilously long moment, Bella stood frozen, her brown eyes wide like a rabbit caught in headlights.
Get in the car! her sensible head repeated Edward's sentiment and her limbs suddenly unfroze. She lurched, unsteadily, towards the car, her fingers feeling numb as she fumbled with the door handle and slammed the door shut. She felt safer, not quite comfortable yet with Edward still out there.
You've just abandoned him! she reprimanded herself internally, her racing heart not showing any signs of calming down.
She wasn't entirely sure how much of her theory was correct, but she was fairly confident that if he could stop a speeding van in its tracks and dent two hefty vehicles in the process, then she was fairly sure that he could take on four fragile humans. Still... there were four of them. And how would he feel if he hurt those guys, despicable as they were? She turned her eyes out on to the streetside confrontation, her brown eyes round and wide.
Out on the street, the two towards the back of the little pack of criminals began to slink away, certain that they wouldn't be seen in the dark shadows, while the other two faced down Edward's defensive crouch. The leader glared at the vampire, but his senses were still present enough to know that he shouldn't mess with this guy. It was completely inexplicable to him, he could, and had, taken down many a boy Edward's size, but there was something unnerving about the otherworldly, feral stance. However, the bulkier man to his side staggered forward a little, too out of it to know what he was really doing and began to utter a long string of expletives towards the vampire and his car.
Inside the car, Bella's stomach muscles tightened with nerves, her fingers clasped at the door, tips resting up against the cold window as she watched.
"Edward," she called softly, her tone more concerned than scared. She didn't think her classmate and sort-of-friend-against-his-own-will-with-the-best-intentions would be able to hear the low utterence. "Come back to me."

Edward heard the slamming of his car door and knew that Bella was safe inside. Now all that was left was to dispose of the vermin on the streets. For awhile he just stared at them, as he decided if it would be better to drag them off into some corner, so that Bella wouldn't have to be witness too it. He doubted she would listen to him if he just told her to close her eyes. But maybe he could move quick enough that she wouldn't really know what he had done, just see the bodies fall to the ground.
Two of the men had started backing out of sight. As if that would stop him? As if these humans could really out run him if he decided to chase after them. Let them have their head start. He thought, knowing it was pointless. One of the men who stayed behind must have sensed how dangerous Edward was, as he didn't make a move on him, but the other one had started staggering towards him. Edward's teeth were showing and his throat gave out a low growl that almost mimiced the sound of his engine. One more step and the man would be taking his last breath.
As he was ready to make his move, he heard her soft call to him and turned. He saw the look in Bella's eyes and knew that no matter what his urges were, he needed to get her away from here. He needed to put space between her and the cause of her fear. He turned back toward the men, giving them a warning look before at a quickened pace (for a human, not quite vampire speed) he got into his car.
Once behind the wheel he sped off as quickly as he had arrived. His eyes were staring foward on the road and his hands were clenched around the steering wheel. His emotions kept telling him that he should have killed them. Was he a coward for not eliminating the threat against Bella? "Are you ok?" He asked, his tone angrier than he wanted it to be when directed towards Bella, but being on the verge of murder did that.

Bella's heart was almost fluttering as she waited for Edward to get into the car, she wouldn't be able to bear it if she made him murder. She couldn't bare it if she got him into trouble. She didn't have too long to wait, though it felt like forever and the instant he started up the car she began to relax. The immediate calming effect that he had on her surprised even herself. Her breathing returned to its regular pace and her heart began to return to its resting rate, in fact, after a few minutes in the car, she felt thoroughly normal.
Elated, in fact, that she was here, actually in the silver Volvo of Edward Cullen. Her eyes shifted sideways, followed by her whole head, to gaze at Edward while he drove. She noticed how tense he was, it was coming off him in almost tangible waves. She took in his tightly clenched fists over the steering wheel, always white, but she imagined that his knuckles had turned whiter still. His face looked stiff, rigid, almost like a statue. In fact, exactly like a statue - a perfect marble sculpture of fury. It almost shocked her when he spoke. She swallowed, the motion scratching her dry throat. She extended a delicate looking smile to him.
"I am now we're both away from them," she told him, a genuine gratefulness invested in her tone.
"How did you-" she cut off her own question. It didn't matter how he knew she was there, if he even did and it wasn't some huge coincidence. It just mattered that he was, and that single thought warmed her heart to the core.
"Are you okay?" she peered at him closely, the pained concern as clear as the nose on her face. Edward Cullen was definitely beginning to become her life.

Once inside the car, Edward tried to focus on the sound of her breathing and her heartbeat. He hoped that the steady rhythm would distract him from the men behind him. Instead it just kept reminding him of what would have happened to her if he had been too late. He didn't have to wonder if they were just trying to scare her and would have then left on their way. He knew every detail of their intentions towards her, and it filled him with rage.
Edward began considering going back. He could easily turn the car around and get to them. Or he could stop here, and run the rest of the way, kill them, and be back to her before she could miss him. Or he could locate her friends, drop her off there, and then go back, and kill them. He didn't just want to kill them, he wanted to cause them pain. Maybe he would let his venom start to scorch their bodies, and then before the transformation would occur, he could either drain them completely or snap their necks. That was certainly a possibility. There seemed to be endless ways he could dispose of these vermin.
He breathed a sigh of relief as she told him that she was alright. Not being able to read her thoughts meant he couldnt know for sure that she hadn't been hurt before he arrived, or that there wasn't someone else that needed to be added to his new hitlist. But she said she was alright, and her voice sounded surprisingly calm for everything she had just been through. Did she just ask me, If I was ok? He thought to himself shocked.
"What?" he said turning his eyes away from the road to look over at her. "You were just almost..." He shook his head looking back towards the road, barely able to believe that she had more concern for him than shock over what had just happened to her. She was so good, down to her very core.
He gripped the steering wheel harder. It was hard to have such murderous thoughts when you were sitting next to someone who was as good of a person as Bella was. He didn't want her to have to live with the thought of what he had done, knowing he did it because of her. If he went back, it would be after he had left her...if he could control his urge to turn around. It would be quick...
He closed his eyes tightly for a second and then opened them as he nodded, finally answering her question. "Yeah...I just...I need you to distract me...so I dont turn around and go after them" He admitted to her, not liking being so weak in his discipline that he needed distractions from being a killer. Carlisle would be disappointed in him.

“I would have been fine. It would have turned out alright,” she told him, trying to keep her voice low and soothing in an attempt to comfort the upset vampire. She couldn’t know that she was absolutely wrong on that count, she was no mind reader, but really, what were the chances of something so bad happening in such a tiny place? She fought an urge in her wrist to touch his arm. She desperately wanted him to not feel bad about this, it seemed that he had been ordained to be her saviour, twice in just a few days, and she remembered how he reacted the last time. That had hurt, for some reason, and she didn’t want him to regret saving her this time, but he already seemed to be reacting badly. She bit her lip as he spoke, musing over how good he was, there in her time of need again.
Her eyes flicked to the road as he closed his own, though any feat was instantly abated by his presence. She felt so safe with him, she was invincible. Without even thinking about it she said the first thing that came to her mind to distract him.
“I’m going to total Tyler’s car tomorrow,” she stated without explanation and devoid of any emotion that would tell Edward whether she was joking or being serious, or just plain crazy. Maybe it was shock - nothing about her tone gave it away.

"Fine?" Edward asked her, thinking she must be either very naive or very trusting in people to believe that a group of men who had cornered her in a dark abandoned alley would have let her go unharmed if he hadn't arrived. "No you wouldn't have been. You didn't know what those scumbags were thinking, what they were planning to do to you!" Edward said, wanting to get a little bit of fear into her so that she wouldnt let herself get in situations like that. She had to understand how serious that was. Although she didn't know that she was now in the car with someone who could do much worse to her. He could still picture clearly in their minds the men fantasizing about what they'd do to her, the sick pleasure they were getting from anticipating her screams, the fear they'd see in her eyes. He very nearly turned the car around that second. "I should go back and rip there heads off for that"
He then heard her attempt to distract him. It confused him enough that oddly it worked. "What? Why? " He asked, looking over at her trying to guage from her expression whether she was serious or not, then then let out a laugh shaking his head as he watched the road again. "Do you want some help?"

Bella very almost responded to Edward's cyncism about her wellbeing, though she decided to leave it as he threatened to go back and 'rup their heads off'. A faint shiver ran down her spine - he looked so intense, his pale gold eyes flashing in the minimal light of the car. No, she would leave it there, his temper was aroused and she had the impression that it would not be a very good idea to inflame it.
Her eyes tore themselves away from the vampire as she wondered whether her theories needed amending or not. It sounded so much like he was implying that she didn't know what those men were thinking, but that he did. It sounded ridiculous, but then so were all her vampire theories running around her head. To be honest, if she was already assuming that he was a supernatural creature that drank blood to survive, adding the ability to read minds wasn't a big step.
So consumed was she in these thoughts that the laughter emerging from Edward almost made her jump. It was a delightful sound, and the first time she had heard it. She couldn't help but add her own little giggle to the sound, it sounding tinny and insignificant in comparison. She cast him a curious glance, her lips drawing up into a smile as she pushed those men and their intentions to the very back of her mind. She shook her head a little,
"Oh, I think my truck will make minced meat of his puny vehicle!" she smirked a little, again ravishing in Charlie's good fortune in finding such a sturdy and characterful truck for her to drive. "What do you have against him, anyway? He's not trying to take you to prom as well is he?"

Edward hated that he was allowing her to see him so angry. After everything she had just been through, he knew he should be the one comforting her, not her trying to keep him calm. Part of him thought it would be good for her to be scared. It seemed the girl had no fear in her whatsoever, of him or anyone else it seemed. But the part of him that had been growing since he started watching her sleep was thinking that he never wanted her to feel she needed to be afraid of him.
He was still fighting back the urge to go back. He didnt know how he could let those men go on walking the street when he knew their intentions. They were a danger not only to Bella but to all of society. Maybe Carlisle would be more understanding of his lapse in judgement knowing he had actually prevented more harm from being done. But Edward had used that justification before, when he had tried feeding on humans. There was a part of him that knew no matter how bad the men were he chose as victims, that the acts he had done still made him a monster.
Edward smiled as he heard her giggling beside him. It was so sweet and innocent sounding, just like her. It was like music to him. He then heard her mention the prom. Ah, that must be the reason. Edward thought, knowing since he couldn't hear her reasonings, he'd have to make assumptions. "No, he's not. And I have nothing against him, but I figured if he must deserve it if you were planning such destruction" He told her, feeling a bit more relaxed, allowing his grip to loosen, and slowing down to a more human speed in his volvo.

Bella's eyes carefully took in the minutest change of Edward's posture at the wheel, inwardly sighing in relief as his knuckles loosened slightly. Eager to continue his relaxation, her mind quickly worked on continuing the somewhat nonsensical conversation. She shrugged a little where she sat, shifting a little as goosebumps rose up and down her bare arms.
"Well, with my truck I figure that it's either total destruction or none at all, it doesn't do things by halves," she inclined her head towards him with a smile on her lips, though she couldn't stop her teeth from chattering ever so slightly. There seemed to be no heating on in the car despite the chilly night air that had now closed upon them and so she made do with wrapping her arms around herself to preserve any internal heat that she had.
"Plus, I figure if I 'crash' into his car he will have to accept that I forgive him for the accident a few weeks ago and then he won't feel he has to take me to the prom, which'll mean I won't have to feel guilty when I turn him down," she trailed off a little at the end, having not meant to quite end on that note. Oh well! She had turned down the three boys that had ended up asking her to the girls' choice dance, even if she didn't have Seattle as an excuse at prom, there were still other cities.
"I don't even know what put the idea into his head," she added in a mumbling voice of discontent, brushing her hands up and down her arms, subconsciously trying to conduct some more heat.

"With the way your luck seems to be, maybe you should use a baseball bat instead of your truck, otherwise you'll probably be the one with a destroyed vehicle" Edward told her, trying to keep himself from thinking of how hurt she could get if she tried to run into his van with her truck.
"Guilt isn't the only reason Tyler wants to go to prom with you, it's only a convenient excuse" Edward commented, knowing telling her this wouldn't give too much away because he could always claim that he heard guys talking about it in class. He wouldn't need to have read Tyler's mind then. "Are you planning on totaling Mike Newton and Eric Yorkie's cars as well? Just to ensure none of them wants to go with you anymore?" he said turning to her with a smile, remembering with pleasure how she had turned them down for the previous dance.
"Can't blame them for wanting to take you" He said honestly, even though he hated the thought that so many of the boys at school were after her. Edward knew that he should be hoping she'd get involved with one of them, encourage himself to stay away from her.
He looked over and saw how cold she was getting. Edward never used the heat in his car, and knew that his presence in such a closed area was probably also making it colder for her. "Your'e cold.." He commented, verbalizing his realization as he reached over to turn on the heat.

Bella made an impatient sound as Edward told her that Tyler wanted to take her to the prom for genuine, insinuating that he was talking rubbish. Maybe he couldn't read minds after all - she scratched the layer from her ludicrous theory.
"Please," she said, flushing. "It's just because I'm new."
Her tone seemed very definite, she couldn't imagine herself as someone attractive enough to warrent so much attention from the boys of her year. It wasn't even a possibility in her mind.
"By the time prom comes around they'll have found someone they really like - no totalling required."
She sat back, content with that thought, though a moment later she considered that the unattractive sound had probably seemed quite rude to her rescuer. By that time, however, he had already moved on. Bella turned, slightly slack-jawed, at the unexpected compliment.
Did I hear that right? she asked herself as her heart gave a little stutter and sped up. Her cheeks flushed redder as she tried to calm herself with thoughts that Edward had meant that taking anyone to the dance would be better than no one, or that getting the new girl to go with you was a popularlity boost, but that didn't stop her cardiovascular reaction. She was so consumed in trying to think of ways to stop her head becoming the same colour as tomato, that she almost missed Edward's concern for her temperature. She nodded a little,
"Yeah, sorry. I left my jacket in Jess' car. It was a nice day," she commented, enjoying the sudden blast of warm air from the Volvo. Her brown eyes shifted up to him, gauging his mood once more and catching the pale colour of his irises. "You don't feel the cold though?"
That was unusual, the paleness. Not that she had been watching him like a hawk for the last few weeks, but she had noted that when Edward's eyes were at the lightest tended to be when he was in the best mood. She vaguely wondered what would have happened to those guys if they had been that black hue they were in that first biology lesson - she had never seen them that dark since.
"Hmm..." she uttered, softly, in conjunction with her pondering over his eyes, trying to figure out the puzzle internally and to fit it in with her gathering mass of a theory.

Edward gave a crooked smile and shook his head as she commented how it was only because she was new. She really was very oblivious to the appeal that she carried. She was right that their attention had initially been because she was new, but she had to know there was more about her that kept their attention and made them continually follow after her.
"I wouldn't count on that" Edward told her as she voiced her belief that by prom they’d have found someone that they really liked. He couldn’t imagine how any other girl in school, or even one that could possibly arrive could be any more interesting that Bella Swan. At least in Edward’s eyes that was true. "You might want to start coming up with another city you can visit"
Edward heard her heartbeat speed up. He wondered if that was a fear reaction or of she was nervous, or something else. He looked over at her and saw her start to blush. His eyes softened as if they were smiling, enjoying the sight.
“Don’t be sorry” He told her, not wanting her to feel the need to apologize. “When we get out you can wear mine” He told her. His brow furrowed slightly as he heard her next question about him not feeling the cold. He wondered how cold it seemed to her. “I’m used to it, you’re still adjusting from the warm weather” He covered himself. “Let me know if you get too warm and want it turned down”
He then heard her ‘Hmm’ and looked over again to see that she was obviously concentrating hard on something. It was extremely frustrating for him not knowing what it was. “Hmm, what?” He aked her. “What are you thinking?”

Bella’s heart skipped another beat as the crooked smile appeared on Edward’s face, highlighting his perfection all the more. It wasn’t even really directed at her with its full intensity, thanks to the fact that he was driving, but even still she found herself dazzled, without breath for the last few moments.
“There’s always Phoenix,” she uttered, though it was at a volume only barely above a breath as she fought for control over herself once more. What was it about this boy that she found herself so consumed with him? Well, she only had to glance to her left to be reminded. She smiled gratefully at him as he offered her his jacket when they left the car, a pathetic little yearning for the contact that he seemed very eager to avoid.
She blushed deeply as she discovered that her ‘hmm’ had been detected. She didn’t say anything for a few moments, her theories, which she had already concluded were ludicrous, seeming all the more ridiculous now that the person they concerned was asking her about them. She chewed on the inside of her lip, brown eyes looking out from her flushed face to his light coloured eyes.
“Oh nothing really, it’s silly,” she began, reluctantly, squirming a little in her seat. “It’s just a bit of a theory… I just… I was just thinking that you were normally much calmer when your eyes are so light.”
If it was even possible, her face grew steadily pinker.
